RESUMO

Sea urchins play a key role in the marine environment, contributing to maintain a balance in benthic ecosystems. Toxopneustes roseus acts as a regulator of rhodolith beds and is a key species as a bioturbation promoter, while Rhyncholampas pacificus moderates the detritus content of sediment through various mechanisms and contributes to accelerating the circulation of organic matter. However, nothing is known about their early development, so the objective of this research is to characterize the embryonic and larval development of specimens of the two species from the southern Mexican Pacific and identify the causes that produce their differences. The embryonic development of T. roseus lasted approximately 20 â€‹h; the echinopluteus larva appeared at 23 â€‹h and culminated in around 12 days with an eight-armed larva. Metamorphosis was reached at 18 days. The embryonic development of R. pacificus lasted about 15 â€‹h; the larva emerged at 20 â€‹h and culminated in about two days with an eight-armed larva. The metamorphosis was completed in 9 days. The reproductive output of both species determines their development time and the structure of their larvae; therefore, the energy of R. pacificus is invested in reaching metamorphosis earlier to ensure that its larvae, which are not very abundant, settle and recruit to the population. Regarding T. roseus, the longest permanence in the plankton is efficiently maintained by its numerous larvae through the presence of mobile arms and the shift of the swimming function to the epauletes. This is the first work that characterizes the early development of a species of the genus Toxopneustes and of the only living species of the genus Ryncholampas. The information generated in this work is essential to gaining knowledge about these groups of echinoids, especially the effect of the environment on their early development.

Background: aphthous stomatitis is a chronic disease characterized by the non-keratinized oral mucosa ulceration, which presents acutely and painfully. Objective: to evaluate the efficacy of borax in the aphthous stomatitis treatment. Methods: an analytical, longitudinal prospective study was carried out in the North Polyclinic Stomatology Department, Ángel del Castillo Agramonte, in the Florida municipality, from December 2019 to April 2021. 139 patients were studied and the sample was made up of 70 patients selected by a simple random method. It was divided into two groups: a study group and a control group to which a homeopathic treatment with borax and a conventional treatment were applied, respectively. Results: the most affected age range was 21-30 years old, and the female sex was the most represented; the lips were the most affected site and aphthous stomatitis prevailed in its minor form. At each control visit, a better evolution of pain, burning, and healing of the lesions was observed with the homeopathic treatment than with the conventional one; an effectiveness of 100% was observed in the patients treated with borax and the majority of the patients were satisfied with the homeopathic treatment received. Conclusions: borax is effective for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis.

RESUMO

Trioecy is a sexual system that consists of the co-occurrence of females, males and hermaphrodites in a population and is common in plants; however, in animals it is uncommon and poorly understood. In echinoderms, trioecy had never been recorded until now. Frequencies of females, males, and hermaphrodites were evaluated and gametogenic development was histologically characterized in a population of Toxopneustes roseus inhabiting the Mexican Pacific. Trioecy in this population is functional and temporally stable, since the three sexes coexisted in each sampling month. The hermaphrodites presented similar gametogenic development as the females and males and participated during the spawning season, contributing to the population's reproductive process. Trioecy is considered an evolutionarily transitory state, and it is extremely difficult to explain its presence in a species. We hypothesize that continuous ocean warming represents a threat to the survival of this population of T. roseus, since its early developmental stages, which represent a population bottleneck, are more vulnerable to high temperatures than other sea urchins inhabiting the area, while its population density is significantly lower. These conditions generate a strongly stressed environment, which is the determining factor that maintains the stability of trioecy in the species in which it has been studied.

RESUMO

People with Down syndrome (DS) have several difficulties in language learning, and one of the areas most affected is language production. Theoretical frameworks argue that prediction depends on the production system. Yet, people with DS can predict upcoming nouns using semantically related verbs. Possibly, prediction skills in people with DS are driven by their associative mechanism rather than by the prediction mechanism based on the production system. This study explores prediction mechanisms in people with DS and their relationship with production skills. Three groups were evaluated in a preferential-looking task: young adults, children with DS, and a typically developing control group paired by sex and mental age. Participants saw two images, a target and a distractor. They also heard a sentence in one of the three conditions: with a verb that was closely related to the object (e.g., "The woman read the book"), with a verb that was moderately related to the object (e.g., "My uncle waited for the bus"), or with a verb that was unrelated to the object (e.g., "My sister threw a broom"). Their productive vocabulary was then measured. In the young adult and typically developing groups, the results showed prediction in sentences with highly and moderately related verbs. Participants with DS, however, showed prediction skills only in the highly related context. There was no influence of chronological age, mental age, or production on prediction skills. These results indicate that people with DS base prediction mainly on associative mechanisms and they have difficulty in generating top-down predictions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Describe Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) sponsor perspectives on barriers and facilitators to home-based provider CACFP eligibility, enrollment, and participation and ways to improve provider support. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 New Mexico CACFP sponsor staff representing 9 out of 13 agencies (69% response rate) from August to September, 2020. Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis with an essentialist/realist epistemological approach. RESULTS: Sponsor-perceived barriers to provider CACFP: eligibility (costs, background checks, fear/stigma, and delays in becoming state-approved providers); enrollment (lack of translated/low-literacy materials and cumulative systems requirements); and participation (challenges maintaining qualifying menus and documentation and accessing qualifying food, inadequate reimbursements, and unannounced visits). Sponsors suggested systems changes to improve provider support (eg, more assistance with becoming state-approved and for start-up costs and accessible, progressive nutrition training opportunities). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Sponsors noted CACFP barriers for home-based providers and identified corresponding systems changes that could be tested.

RESUMO

Background The perceptual similarity between two objects, specifically similarity in the shape of the referents, is a crucial element for relating words in earlier stages of development. The role of this perceptual similarity has not been systematically explored in children with Down syndrome (DS). Method: The aim was to explore the role of perceptual similarity in relationships between words in children with DS. Two groups, children with typical development (TD) and children with DS, matched by gender and mental age, participated in a priming task with a preferential looking paradigm. The task presented validated perceptually-related word pairs (prime-target) and perceptually unrelated pairs. In the priming task both groups were asked to look at a target image (e.g. ball) that was perceptually related (e.g. cookie) or unrelated (e.g. skirt) to the prime. Results: Participants from both groups looked more at targets without perceptual similarity than at those with similarity to the prime, suggesting an inhibition effect. Conclusions: This finding suggests the role of visual information, particularly the shape of the referents, in the construction of the lexical system.

RESUMO

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) affects approximately 10%-20% of adults and is associated with obesity, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Aim: To assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with OSAS in Chilean adults. Material and Methods: A standardized sleep questionnaire and respiratory polygraphy at home were conducted on adults aged 18 years or more, residing in the Metropolitan Region and enrolled in the 2016/17 National Health Survey. Results: Two-hundred and five people between 18 and 84 years old (46% men, mean age 50 years) underwent overnight respiratory polygraphy at home. The estimated obstructive sleep apnea prevalence was 49% (62% men, 31% women) considering an apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 5 respiratory events/hour, and 16% (21% men, 13% women) considering an apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 15 respiratory events/hour. The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea continuously increased along with age for men and women, with a later onset for women. Age, gender, body mass index, cervical and waist circumference, snoring, reporting of apnea by proxies, self-reported cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia, were significantly associated with OSAS. No association was found with insomnia and daytime sleepiness. Conclusions: The prevalence and risk factors associated to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were high among these adults.

RESUMO

Background The diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is based on nocturnal records: polysomnography or respiratory polygraphy. However, their high costs limit their use. Aim To examine the predictive value of three sleep questionnaires (STOP, STOP-Bang, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) in the screening of OSAS in Chilean adults. Material and Methods During the National Health Survey 2016/17, 205 adults aged 50.7 ± 15.0 years (46% males) living in the Metropolitan Region answered sleep questionnaires and underwent an ambulatory respiratory polygraphy. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values and receiver operating characteristic curves of sleep questionnaires were calculated. Results Fifty nine percent of participants had OSAS which was moderate to severe in 26%. The clinical variables associated with OSAS were age, male gender, hypertension, dyslipidemia, overweight, cervical and waist circumferences, history of regular snoring and witnessed apneas. Daytime somnolence, insomnia and unrefreshing sleep were not associated to OSAS risk. STOP, STOP-Bang and ESS questionnaires classified 64%, 71% and 12% of cases as high risk for OSAS, respectively. The STOP and STOP-Bang questionnaires had the highest sensitivity to predict OSAS (76% and 89%, respectively) while the ESS had the highest specificity (91%). Conclusions The sleep questionnaires allowed to identify the subjects at high risk for OSAS in this sample of adults from the Metropolitan Region.

RESUMO

Toxopneustes roseus performs a key role in the eastern tropical Pacific as a strategic herbivore and bioturbation promoter. We evaluated the effect of temperature on the fertilization success, embryonic development and larval survival of T. roseus under laboratory conditions, to understand how the increase in ocean temperature could affect it in a global warming. The highest percentage of fertilization occurred in gametes that were exposed to 30 °C, and a significant negative effect of 32 °C was evidenced by the lowest percentage. There was also a deleterious effect in embryos exposed to 32 °C, resulting in an abnormal development at all the time points. The highest percentage of larval survival occurred at 30 °C, while the lowest percentage occurred at 32 °C. The results suggest that T. roseus probably lives near its upper thermal limit, and future ocean warming could threaten the permanence of the species in the eastern tropical Pacific, or at least lead to contraction or fragmentation of its range limits. Therefore if sea temperature rises globally, it could cause the disappearance of these populations that are living at the edge of their thermal tolerance, but for other populations located in more temperate latitudes, it could propitiate favorable conditions for fertilization and survival of embryos and larvae.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Children and adults with neurotypical development employ linguistic information to predict and anticipate information. Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have weaknesses in language production and the domain of grammar but relative strengths in language comprehension and the domain of semantics. What is not clear is the extent to which they can use linguistic information, as it unfolds in real time, to anticipate upcoming information correctly. AIMS: To investigate whether children and young people with DS employ verb information to predict and anticipate upcoming linguistic information. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A preferential looking task was performed, using an eye-tracker, with children and teenagers with DS and a typically developing (TD) control group matched by sex and mental age (average = 5.48 years). In each of 10 trials, two images were presented, a target and a distractor, while participants heard a phrase that contained a semantically informative verb (e.g., 'eat') or an uninformative verb (e.g., 'see'). OUTCOMES & RESULTS: Both DS and TD control participants could anticipate the target upon hearing an informative verb, and prediction skills were positively correlated with mental age in those with DS. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: This work demonstrates for the first time that children and teenagers with DS can predict linguistic information based on semantic cues from verbs, and that sentence processing is driven by predictive relationships between verbs and arguments, as in children with typical development. Clinicians can take advantage of these prediction skills, using them in therapy to support weaker areas.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Primary mammary lymphomas represent less than 1% of all Non Hodgking Lymphomas (NHL). Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) represents 4% of lymphomas in the United States, and 7-9% in Europe and is diagnosed in patients with a median age of 60 years. Unilateral painless mammary mass in postmenopausal women use to be the clinical presentation. Secondary breast lymphoma is defined as the presence of systemic lymphoma with breast involvement, as the patient below. CLINICAL CASE: 57-year-old female patient with post-traumatic mammary tumor, with history of thrombocytopenia, first-time diagnosed of hematoma, with breast enlargement and later diagnosed as lymphoma of mantle cells with pathology test and classified as secondary to previous inguinal nodal lymphoma. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to keep in mind this diagnosis in view of the persistence or rapid growth of a mammary hematoma or other lesion with benign radiological appearance. The biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosis, since it allows the histological and immunohistochemical study, for molecular confirmation. The treatment is mainly based on chemo / radiotherapy, which improves survival and decreases recurrence.

Abstract Diadema mexicanum, a conspicuous inhabitant along the Mexican Pacific coast, is a key species for the dynamics of coral reefs; nevertheless, studies on population dynamics for this species are scarce. Monthly sampling was carried out between April 2008 and March 2009 at Isla Montosa and La Entrega, Oaxaca, Mexico using belt transects. Population density was estimated as well as abundance using Zippin's model. The relationship of density with sea-bottom temperature, salinity, pH, and pluvial precipitation was analyzed using a step by step multiple regression analysis. Spatial distribution was analyzed using Morisita's, Poisson and negative binomial models. Natural mortality rate was calculated using modified Berry's model. Mean density was 3.4 ± 0.66 ind·m-2 in La Entrega and 1.2 ± 0.4 ind·m-2 in Isla Montosa. Abundance of D. mexicanum in La Entrega was 12166 ± 25 individuals and 2675 ± 33 individuals in Isla Montosa. In Isla Montosa there was a positive relationship of density with salinity and negative with sea-bottom temperature, whereas in La Entrega there was not a significant relationship of density with any recorded environmental variable. Monthly mortality rate was 0.10 in La Entrega and 0.15 in Isla Montosa. Spatial distribution pattern was aggregated for both localities during the sampling period with oscillations in the intensity of aggregation. Higher density and abundance, and a low mortality rate, indicate better conditions for the population of D. mexicanum in La Entrega, contrasting with those of Isla Montosa where apparently there are more stressful conditions associated to stronger oceanographic conditions and a higher sedimentation rate resulting from the proximity of the Copalita River. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (Suppl. 2): 173-182. Epub 2015 June 01.

Prevention comes from the beginning of the 20th century, the preservation of the dental structures in the process of restoration has been taken under a highly consideration in the last decades, with the applications of adhesive techniques. This currently investigation, is about a new micro invasive technique to prevent and stabilize early injuries, which consists on the infiltration of tooth decays applying resin on different areas on the enamel. Incipient tooth decay injuries were created artificially on five youth dental pieces, these were extracted for orthodontic reasons, the implementation of the resin ICON on these samples were afterwards, following the protocol established by the manufacturer. Dental carborundum discs were used to make a vertical cut on the samples and these were subject to the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) afterwards for their respective observation and analyze all the differences on the ratio penetration over all the areas on the enamel. Five pictures per sample were taken on different scales and resolutions on this current step so the results could be seen and observed with more clarity. All the data and results was collected and stored on an observation guide, currently processed by the Statistic Program SPSS; the Kolmogorv-Smirnov Test was applied initially, followed by the ANOVA Test, all of this lead to state that there is no difference on the ICON Resin's penetration capacity when it is applied on different enamel areas, this concludes that the resin is equally effective applied on the occlusal third, middle and cervical. Enamel-Resin interfaces were also noticed on the samples, showing that the ICON Resin couldn't infiltrate on the injury with a 100% efficiency; however, is established and believed that the ICON Resin's effectiveness is the result of the injury's pores get clogged and with that stopping the diffusion of nutrients and the development of tooth decay.

RESUMO

The aim of this research is to present a Spanish Word Association Norms (WAN) database of concrete nouns. The database includes 234 stimulus words (SWs) and 67,622 response words (RWs) provided by 478 young Mexican adults. Eight different measures were calculated to quantitatively analyze word-word relationships: 1) Associative strength of the first associate, 2) Associative strength of the second associate, 3) Sum of associative strength of first two associates, 4) Difference in associative strength between first two associates, 5) Number of different associates, 6) Blank responses, 7) Idiosyncratic responses, and 8) Cue validity of the first associate. The resulting database is an important contribution given that there are no published word association norms for Mexican Spanish. The results of this study are an important resource for future research regarding lexical networks, priming effects, semantic memory, among others.
