RESUMO

Graphene nano-optics at terahertz (THz) frequencies (ν) is theoretically anticipated to feature extraordinary effects. However, interrogating such phenomena is nontrivial, since the atomically thin graphene dimensionally mismatches the THz radiation wavelength reaching hundreds of micrometers. Greater challenges happen in the THz gap (0.1-10 THz) wherein light sources are scarce. To surpass these barriers, we use a nanoscope illuminated by a highly brilliant and tunable free-electron laser to image the graphene nano-optical response from 1.5 to 6.0 THz. For ν < 2 THz, we observe a metal-like behavior of graphene, which screens optical fields akin to noble metals, since this excitation range approaches its charge relaxation frequency. At 3.8 THz, plasmonic resonances cause a field-enhancement effect (FEE) that improves the graphene imaging power. Moreover, we show that the metallic behavior and the FEE are tunable upon electrical doping, thus providing further control of these graphene nano-optical properties in the THz gap.

RESUMO

Lippia alba is popularly known as lemon balm, with its essential oil (EO) cited for displaying antimicrobial, sedative, and vasorelaxant effects. Yet, its action on isolated human vessels has not been described in the literature. Thus, we evaluated the vasorelaxant effect of essential oil of L. alba (EOLa) on human umbilical arteries (HUA) isolated in organ baths. HUA rings were isolated, subjected to contractions induced by potassium chloride (KCl), serotonin (5-HT), or histamine (HIST) to record the isometric tension, and then treated with EOLa (30-1000 µg/mL). The EOLa showed a more prominent inhibitory effect on the pharmacomechanical coupling contraction via HIST with an EC50 value of 277.1 ± 8.5 µg/mL and maximum relaxant effect at 600 µg/mL. The addition of tetraethylammonium (TEA) or 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) in HUA preparations did not inhibit EOLa total relaxant effect at 1000 µg/mL. In the presence of gliblenclamide (GLI), the oil relaxed the HUA rings by 90.8% at maximum concentration. The EOLa was also investigated for its effects on voltage-operated calcium channels (VOCCs), where the HUA preincubation with this oil at 1000 µg/mL inhibited BaCl2 (0.1-30 mM)-induced contractions. This study demonstrates for the first time that EOla has a vasorelaxant effect on HUA and its particular blockade of VOCCs.

RESUMO

The increase in bacterial resistance to available antibiotics has driven several researchers to search for new agents with therapeutic properties. Diosgenin is a naturally occurring steroidal saponin that has demonstrated several pharmacological properties. In the present study, we report the antimicrobial activity of diosgenin against the standard and multidrug-resistant bacteria of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, in addition to the efflux pump inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus strains carrying NorA and MepA pumps. For this purpose, the broth microdilution method was used, from which the value of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was obtained, and this was associated with subinhibitory concentration (MIC/8) with antibiotic of clinical use and ethidium bromide for strains carrier by efflux pump. Diosgenin showed antimicrobial activity for standard S. aureus bacteria and potentiating activity in association with gentamicin and ampicillin for P. aeruginosa multidrug-resistant bacteria, it also showed potentiation in association with norfloxacin against the E. coli strain and gentamicin against the S. aureus strain. Antimicrobial activity against efflux pump-bearing strains revealed that saponin did not interfere with the efflux pump mechanism or intervened antagonistically. Thus, saponin has shown to be very promising against bacterial resistance in association with aminoglycoside, fluoroquinolones and beta-lactam, however additional studies should be carried out to better elucidate the mechanism of action of diosgenin.

RESUMO

This study's aim was to determine the presence, as well as to evaluate the health and environmental impacts, of chemical elements from firearm shots during shooter practice at outdoor shooting ranges, both in the environment and on the shooters' hands. Two high-precision devices were used for measuring suspended particles that are released during discharge of Taurus PT 100 .40 caliber pistols. The analysis of collected data allowed the identification of specific distribution patterns of samples that were adsorbed. Moreover, samples were collected from the opisthenar area of the hand to investigate both the occurrence and deposition of particles and chemical elements through scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results indicate that copper, lead, and zinc concentration profiles will be able to delimit and reveal more precise details regarding shots made with nontoxic ammunition (NTA). In particular, the residual graphic analysis indicated that the majority of metal deposited in the shooter's hand is zinc. Further, the metals barium and lead also were detected. Due to the exposure to these elements, it could be concluded that engineering controls and administrative management should be sought in order to avoid human overexposure and environmental release of these airborne toxic metals.

RESUMO

Due to an increasing demand for sustainable agricultural practices, the adoption of microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as antagonists against phytopathogens has emerged as an eco-friendly alternative to the use of agrochemicals. Here, we identified three Pseudomonas strains that were able to inhibit, in vitro, up to 80% of mycelial growth of the phytopathogenic fungus Thielaviopsis ethacetica, the causal agent of pineapple sett rot disease in sugarcane. Using GC/MS, we found that these bacteria produced 62 different VOCs, and further functional validation revealed compounds with high antagonistic activity to T. ethacetica. Transcriptomic analysis of the fungal response to VOCs indicated that these metabolites downregulated genes related to fungal central metabolism, such as those involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Interestingly, genes related to the DNA damage response were upregulated, and micro-FTIR analysis corroborated our hypothesis that VOCs triggered DNA damage. Electron microscopy analysis showed critical morphological changes in mycelia treated with VOCs. Altogether, these results indicated that VOCs hampered fungal growth and could lead to cell death. This study represents the first demonstration of the molecular mechanisms involved in the antagonism of sugarcane phytopathogens by VOCs and reinforces that VOCs can be a sustainable alternative for use in phytopathogen biocontrol.

RESUMO

Introduction Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common vestibular disorder, resulting from detached otoliths that migrate to one of the semicircular canals - canalolithiasis - or one of the cupulas - cupulolithiasis. The present study is related to lateral canal BPPVs, which may be either geotropic or apogeotropic. The geotropic variant of lateral semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (LC-BPPV) is attributed to free floating particles in the posterior arm of the lateral semicircular canal. Objectives To verify the possibility of employing the Zuma repositioning maneuver, with a brief modification, as an alternative treatment for geotropic LC-BPPV. Methods Seven patients with geotropic LC-BPPV were enrolled and treated with the Zuma modified maneuver. Patients were reevaluated 1 hour after a single maneuver, to confirm the resolution of vertigo and positional nystagmus. Results All seven patients achieved immediate resolution of vertigo and positional nystagmus as measured 1 hour after the application of the maneuver. Conclusion The Zuma modified maneuver was effective for geotropic LC-BPPV after a single application. The use of the Zuma maneuver for both apogeotropic and geotropic LC-BPPV may simplify the treatment of these patients.

RESUMO

Hyperbolic phonon polaritons have recently attracted considerable attention in nanophotonics mostly due to their intrinsic strong electromagnetic field confinement, ultraslow polariton group velocities, and long lifetimes. Here we introduce tin oxide (SnO2) nanobelts as a photonic platform for the transport of surface and volume phonon polaritons in the mid- to far-infrared frequency range. This report brings a comprehensive description of the polaritonic properties of SnO2 as a nanometer-sized dielectric and also as an engineered material in the form of a waveguide. By combining accelerator-based IR-THz sources (synchrotron and free-electron laser) with s-SNOM, we employed nanoscale far-infrared hyper-spectral-imaging to uncover a Fabry-Perot cavity mechanism in SnO2 nanobelts via direct detection of phonon-polariton standing waves. Our experimental findings are accurately supported by notable convergence between theory and numerical simulations. Thus, the SnO2 is confirmed as a natural hyperbolic material with unique photonic properties essential for future applications involving subdiffractional light traffic and detection in the far-infrared range.

RESUMO

In clinical practice, the head impulse test paradigm (HIMP) and the suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) stimulate high-frequency head movements so that the visual system is temporarily suppressed. The two tests could also be useful tools for vestibular assessment at low frequencies: VVOR (visually enhanced vestibulo-ocular reflex) and VORS (vestibulo-ocular reflex suppression). The aim of this study is to analyze the eye movements typically found during VVOR and VORS testing in patients with unilateral and bilateral vestibular hypofunction. Twenty patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction, three patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction, and ten patients with normal vestibular function (control group) were analyzed through VVOR and VORS testing with an Otometrics ICS Impulse system. During the VVOR test, patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction exhibited corrective saccades to the same direction of the nystagmus fast phase toward the healthy side when the head rotates toward the affected side, while patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction exhibited corrective saccades to the opposite side of head movements to each side. During the VORS test, patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction seem to exhibit larger corrective saccades to the healthy side when the head was moved to this side, while patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction did not exhibit corrective saccades during head movements to either side. Our data suggest that the VVOR and VORS tests yield the same diagnostic information as the HIMP and SHIMP tests in unilateral and bilateral vestibular hypofunction, and can contribute to the diagnosis of a peripheral vestibular loss as well as the affected side.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of the protein-free galactomannan obtained from Delonix regia seeds (GM-DR) in an experimental osteoarthritis (OA) model. GM-DR was obtained from water-homogenized endosperms by collection of the supernatant and precipitation with ethanol. The remaining proteins in the galactomannan were removed by alkaline hydrolysis. Weight average molar mass (Mw) of the galactomannan was estimated in 5.8 × 105 g mol-1, presenting mannose:galactose ratio of 2.39:1. Rats received sodium monoiodoacetate (OA groups, 1 mg/25 µL) or saline (sham group) in the right tibio-tarsal joint. GM-DR (30-300 µg) was administered by intra-articular route at days 14 and 21 after OA induction. Hypernociception was evaluated daily by the measurement of the mechanical threshold required to cause joint flexion and paw withdrawal reflex. The 56-day animal groups were euthanized for joint histopahological analysis using the OARSI score system. Lower doses of GM-DR (30 and 100 µg) promoted antinociception from day 15 until the endpoint at day 56. Joint damage was reduced by GM-DR administration (100 µg) in OA-subjected animals, compared to the vehicle-treated OA group (5.9 ± 1.8 vs 19.0 ± 1.8, respectively, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Both antinociception and damage reduction suggest that Delonix regia galactomannan is a promising approach for osteoarthritis therapy.

RESUMO

The bedside examination associated with their clinical history remains the most critical means to accurately diagnose the cause for most of the signs and symptoms related to pathology of the cerebellum and vestibular system in patients presenting with dizziness and imbalance. This paper focuses on those critical bedside examinations, suggests when laboratory testing might be useful to confirm the clinical suspicion, and considers the shared neural circuitry within the visual and vestibular systems to offer an algorithmic approach in conducting the clinical bedside examination.

RESUMO

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of peripheral vestibular vertigo. It is caused by free-floating otoconia moving freely in one of the semicircular canals (canalolithiasis) or by otoliths adhered to the cupula (cupulolithiasis). The posterior canal is the most common canal affected, followed by the lateral canal. Diagnosis of the side affected is critical for successful treatment; therefore, suppressing visual fixation is essential to examination of these patients' eye movement. On the basis of our experience, we have adopted the Zuma maneuver and the modified Zuma maneuver for both apogeotropic and geotropic variants of lateral canal BPPV. Knowledge of the anatomy and pathophysiologic mechanisms of the semicircular canals is essential for correct management of these patients. Hence, using a single maneuver and its modification may facilitate daily neurotological practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to study the characteristics of women undergoing abdominal surgery with suspected abdominal wall endometriosis or abdominal wall tumor, and to assess the association with age, race and previous cesarean delivery. METHOD: retrospective and analytical study carried out from January 2000 to December 2019, at the General Surgery Service of Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro (HUAP) at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). Medical records of 100 patients with abdominal wall endometriosis and other types of abdominal wall tumors were analyzed. Age, color, previous history of cesarean section or abdominal surgery and histopathological data were verified. The patients were classified as young adults (aged between 18 and 28 years and 11 months) and adults. The SPSS program was used for data analysis, Fisher's test with a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: abdominal wall endometriosis with histopathological confirmation was found in 22%, the mean age was 52.28 ± 18.66 which was lower when compared to other diagnoses. There was an association between previous cesarean section and abdominal wall endometriosis (p <0.005). CONCLUSION: the women with a diagnosis of abdominal wall endometriosis had undergone previous cesareans (the majority) and were in an active reproductive age. Although the brown skin women were the most frequent, there was no statistical difference.

RESUMO

Abstract Introduction: Neurotology is a rapidly expanding field of knowledge. The study of the vestibular system has advanced so much that even basic definitions, such as the meaning of vestibular symptoms, have only recently been standardized. Objective: To present a review of the main subjects of neurotology, including concepts, diagnosis and treatment of Neurotology, defining current scientific evidence to facilitate decision-making and to point out the most evidence-lacking areas to stimulate further new research. Methods: This text is the result of the I Brazilian Forum of Neurotology, which brought together the foremost Brazilian researchers in this area for a literature review. In all, there will be three review papers to be published. This first review will address definitions and therapies, the second one will address diagnostic tools, and the third will define the main diseases diagnoses. Each author performed a bibliographic search in the LILACS, SciELO, PubMed and MEDLINE databases on a given subject. The text was then submitted to the other Forum participants for a period of 30 days for analysis. A special chapter, on the definition of vestibular symptoms, was translated by an official translation service, and equally submitted to the other stages of the process. There was then a in-person meeting in which all the texts were orally presented, and there was a discussion among the participants to define a consensual text for each chapter. The consensual texts were then submitted to a final review by four professors of neurotology disciplines from three Brazilian universities and finally concluded. Based on the full text, available on the website of the Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervical-Facial Surgery, this summary version was written as a review article. Result: The text presents the official translation into Portuguese of the definition of vestibular symptoms proposed by the Bárány Society and brings together the main scientific evidence for each of the main existing therapies for neurotological diseases. Conclusion: This text rationally grouped the main topics of knowledge regarding the definitions and therapies of Neurotology, allowing the reader a broad view of the approach of neurotological patients based on scientific evidence and national experience, which should assist them in clinical decision-making, and show the most evidence-lacking topics to stimulate further study.

Despite being recognized as a therapeutic target in the processes of cancer cell proliferation and metastasis for over 50 years, the interaction of the urokinase plasminogen activator uPA with its receptor uPAR still needs an improved understanding. High resolution crystallographic data (PDB ) of the uPA-uPAR binding geometry was used to perform quantum biochemistry computations within the density functional theory (DFT) framework. A divide to conquer methodology considering a mixed homogeneous/inhomogeneous dielectric model and explicitly taking water molecules into account was employed to obtain a large set of uPA-uPAR residue-residue interaction energies. In order of importance, not only were Phe25 > Tyr24 > Trp30 > Ile28 shown to be the most relevant uPA residues binding it to uPAR, but the residues Lys98 > His87 > Gln40 > Asn22 > Lys23 > Val20 also had significant interaction energies, which helps to explain published experimental mutational data. Furthermore, the results obtained with the uPA-uPAR in/homogeneous dielectric function show that a high dielectric constant value ε = 40 is adequate to take into account the electrostatic environment at the interface between the proteins, while using a smaller value of ε (<10) leads to an overestimation of the uPA-uPAR binding energy. Hot spots of the uPA-uPAR binding domain were identified and a quantum biochemistry description of the uPAR blockers uPA21-30 and cyclo21,29uPA21-29[(S21C;H29C)] was performed, demonstrating that cyclization improves the stability of mimetic peptides without compromising their binding energies to uPAR.

Hemangioma is a benign neoplasm characterized by an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels, common in the head and neck region. It is relatively rare in the oral cavity, but if this region is affected, it occurs more commonly in the lips, tongue, and oral mucosa. The aim of this study was to describe a clinical case of hemangioma in the right jugal mucosa, which was treated through sclerotherapy with Ethanolamine Oleate (Ethamolin®), and the use of ultrasonography to guide the intralesional applications. Now, the patient has a 2-year follow-up, which allowed the observation of the involution of the lesion. The ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy with Ethamolin® is a safe procedure that can be performed in deeper lesions, minimizing the possibility of complications, and favoring the patient's recovery.

(AU)

Introduction: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) or benign mixed tumor is a more common salivary gland neoplasia. The parotid gland is usually the most affected with 80% of the cases and when they appear in smaller salivary glands, the palate is a region more affected. The objective of this study is to report a case of PA in the hard palate, treated conservatively. Case report: Patient 35 years old, male, presenting a palate volume increase with 6 months of evolution and submitted to surgical surgery performed under local anesthesia for enucleation of the process followed by periosteum cures and preservation of overlying mucosal tissue. Final considerations: At the moment, the patient is 1 year of follow-up and shows no signs of relapse... (AU)

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the anatomical distance of the maxillary artery, the most superior portion of the condyle and subcondyle in standardized coronal sections, acquired from 16 hemifaces in 8 cadavers. METHODS: Measurements were taken to evaluate the distance between the uppermost portion of the mandibular condyle and the height of the maxillary artery (AB) and between the lateral (CD) and medial (EF) sides of the condylar neck to the artery. RESULTS: The mean for AB was 21.1 mm hemiface right and 22.9 mm left on the anterior face, 22.5 mm and 20.7 mm, respectively, on the rear face. The CD measurement presented 6.7 mm right side in the anterior face and 6.3 mm left, and the posterior face was 6.3 mm right side and 5.4 mm left; EF presented a mean of 2.2 mm right and 1.5 mm left on the anterior face and 1.6 mm for both sides on the posterior face. CONCLUSIONS: There was no statistically significant difference between hemifaces. The proximity of the maxillary artery to the medial face of the neck of the mandibular condyle is millimetric and presents risks of severe hemorrhage for interventions in the infratemporal fossa.
