RESUMO

The production of coconut tree seedlings is an important step in the production process, as it substantially affects the productive performance of the adult plant, and the way of obtaining seedlings directly reflects the added costs. To minimize costs, the introduction of biostimulants can be considered a viable and sustainable technology. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of applying Bacillus cereus in promoting growth and reducing the costs of producing Brazilgreen dwarf coconut seedlings. The study has two stages, the first was an experiment carried out in a commercial nursery in the state of Pará-Brazil. The design was completely randomized, with two treatments: control with water (100% mineral fertilization) and B. cereus inoculation (50% mineral fertilization), with 10 replicates each. Biometric parameters and the quality of seedlings were evaluated. In the second stage, the production of stimulated seedlings was compared to that of commercial seedlings, and the effective operating cost (COE) and the total operating cost (TOC) were determined. Biostimulation with B. cereus promotes the growth of coconut tree seedlings, increases seedling quality, and reduces nursery time. In addition, the cost of production is reduced by 10%. Thus, microbial technology is a positive strategy for the production of Brazilian green dwarf coconut seedlings. Using B. cereus can guarantee obtaining seedlings with high performance and at a lower cost. These results may favor obtaining adult plants with high productivity. RESUMO

Alternative techniques for applying agricultural products, such as pressurized endotherapy, have shown promise in pest and disease control in coconut palms (Cocos nucifera Linn.). In this work, azadirachtin and abamectin were applied by pressurized endotherapy to control Brassolis sophorae. Twelve different treatments were carried out, and in all of them, at least one plant had the larvae completely dead four and five days after endotherapeutic applications, and all the others died within the next few hours. Leaf and fruit analyses were performed to determine the concentration over time. High concentrations of abamectin were observed after 15 and 30 days on leaves when applied in larger volumes. In fruits, no residue was found regardless of the applied concentration. Analytical methods were developed and validated for leaves and fruits to analyze insecticide residues using LC-MS/MS and modified QuEChERS acetate according to SANTE/11813/2017 guidelines. The insecticide translocation tests in the leaves and the high mortality of insects showed that pressurized endotherapy is a technique to be considered for future studies in controlling B. sophorae in coconut palm trees.

RESUMO

Coconut production in the Amazon requires the knowledge and development of sustainable technologies to alleviate the detrimental effects of inorganic chemical fertilizers and intensive farming practices. In this study, we investigated the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolated from coconut seedlings on nutrient use efficiency (NUE) and physiological mechanisms related to biomass accumulation of seedlings grown with reduced inorganic fertilizer levels. Of the 96 PGPR isolates tested on rice plants, the isolate Bacillus cereus (UFRABC40) was selected, as it resulted in the most significant gain in growth variables. In a commercial coconut tree nursery, we subjected seedlings to two treatments, both with seven replications: control 100% NPK chemical fertilizer (CF) and B. cereus + 50% NPK CF. The results indicated that the inoculation increased phytohormone levels [190% indole acetic acid (IAA), 31% gibberellic acid GA3, and 17% gibberellic acid GA4] and leaf gas exchange [48% by assimilation of CO2 (A), 35% stomatal conductance to water vapor (gs), 33% transpiration, and 57% instantaneous carboxylation efficiency] in leaves. Furthermore, growth parameters (shoot, root, and total dry weight, height, and diameter) and macro- and micronutrient levels (95% N, 44% P, 92% K, 103 Ca, 46% Fe, 84% B) were improved. Our results show the potential ability of strain Bacillus cereus UFRABC40 to promote the growth performance of coconut seedlings under decreased application of inorganic fertilizers. The application of microbial-based products in coconut seedling production systems improves plants' physiological performance and the efficiency of nutrient use.

RESUMO

In the Eastern Amazon is the largest continuous coconut crop area in the world. This region is known for its high precipitation levels and an ecosystem of extensive insect biodiversity. It is important to know the local entomofauna and to know whether there is a balance between the different insect groups. This study aimed to understand the influence of seasonality on the dynamics of edaphic insect families, comparing the environment as a whole and in different commercial coconut crop areas and riparian forests in the Eastern Amazon. Forty pitfall traps were installed in the ground at an average distance of 1 m from the coconut stipe. They were filled with 200 ml of an aqueous solution of liquid neutral soap and 70% alcohol. Traps were installed in eight areas: an area of riparian forest (A1) and seven in commercial coconut cropareas (A2 to A8), in the Amazon dry and rainy season. The similarity between the insects was measured using Euclidean distance. The abundance of families in each collection area used qualitative similarity. For family dominance, quantitative similarity was used. Diversity analyses were performed to justify the similarities of the clusters through the Shannon and Simpson Indices. In total, 252,313 individuals, 118 families, and 9 orders were collected. There were many Formicidae in both climatic periods because itis a social insect and has edaphic habits. The families with the most individuals in the collections were Drosophilidae, Staphylinidae, Bostrichidae, Phoridae, Nitidulidae, Scolytidae, Tenebrionidae, Scarabaeidae, Ceratopogomidae, and Platyogastridae. RESUMO

Coconut oil (CO) from fifteen different varieties of coconuts (Cocos nucifera L.) and one CO processed on an industrial scale were analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and the data processed using the chemometric tools principal component analysis and independent component analysis. ESI-MS fingerprinting of lipid compounds showed predominance of diacylglycerols and triacylglycerols, as confirmed by high-resolution MS measurements. Chemometric processing of the ESI-MS data differentiated the coconut oil samples, showing that different coconut varieties/cultivars produce oils with distinguishable abundances of lipidic compounds. Thus ESI-MS analysis followed by data treatment using chemometric tools offers a tool able to classify the industrial coconut oils in a fast, simple and effective way, as well as serving as a potential method to identify the coconut varieties by the CO origin, and the occurrence of any adulteration. The procedure may also be applied for quality control of the industrial processes.
