RESUMO

Major advances have been made in utilizing human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) for regenerative medicine. Nevertheless, the delivery and integration of hiPSCs into target tissues remain significant challenges, particularly in the context of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) restoration. In this study, we introduce a promising avenue for providing directional guidance to regenerated cells in the retina. First, we developed a technique for construction of gradient interfaces based on functionalized conductive polymers, which could be applied with various functionalized ehthylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomers. Using a tree-shaped channel encapsulated with a thin PDMS and a specially designed electrochemical chamber, gradient flow generation could be converted into a functionalized-PEDOT gradient film by cyclic voltammetry. The characteristics of the successfully fabricated gradient flow and surface were analyzed using fluorescent labels, time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Remarkably, hiPSC-RGCs seeded on PEDOT exhibited improvements in neurite outgrowth, axon guidance and neuronal electrophysiology measurements. These results suggest that our novel gradient PEDOT may be used with hiPSC-based technologies as a potential biomedical engineering scaffold for functional restoration of RGCs in retinal degenerative diseases and optic neuropathies.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological cancer. As the primary treatment, chemotherapy has a response rate of only 60-70% in advanced stages, and even lower as a second-line treatment. Despite guideline recommendations, which drugs will be most effective remains unclear. Thus, a strategy to prioritize chemotherapy options is urgently needed. Cancer organoids have recently emerged as a method for in vitro drug testing. However, limited clinical correlations have been assessed with test results from cancer organoids, particularly in gynecological cancers. We therefore aimed to generate patient-derived organoids (PDOs) of ovarian cancer, to assess their drug sensitivities and correlations with patient clinical outcomes. METHODS: PDOs were generated from fresh tumors obtained during surgical resection, which was then cultured under matrix gel and appropriate growth factors. Morphological and molecular characterization of PDOs were assessed by phase contrast microscopy and paraffin-embedded histopathology. Expressions of PAX8, TP53, WT1, CK7, and CK20 were tested by immunohistochemical staining and compared with parental tumor tissues and the human protein atlas database. PDOs were subjected to in vitro drug testing to determine drug sensitivity using Titer-Glo® 3D Cell Viability Assay. PDO viability was measured, and area under the curve calculated, to compare responses to various compounds. Correlations were calculated between selected patients' clinical outcomes and in vitro drug testing results. RESULTS: We established 31 PDOs. Among them, 28 PDOs can be expanded, including 15, 11, and 2 from ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers, respectively. The PDOs preserved the histopathological profiles of their originating tumors. In vitro drug testing of 10 ovarian cancer PDOs revealed individual differential responses to recommended drugs, and interpersonal heterogeneity in drug sensitivity, even with the same histology type. Among four patients who were platinum sensitive, resistant, or refractory, PDO drug responses correlated well with their clinical courses. CONCLUSION: In vitro drug testing using ovarian cancer organoids is feasible and correlates well with patient clinical responses. These results may facilitate development of precision chemotherapy and personalized screening for repurposed or new drugs.

Intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) in proteins can undergo liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) for functional assembly, but this increases the chance of forming disease-associated amyloid fibrils. Not all amyloid fibrils form through LLPS however, and the importance of LLPS relative to other pathways in fibril formation remains unclear. We investigated this question in TDP-43, a motor neuron disease and dementia-causing protein that undergoes LLPS, using thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence, NMR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments. Using a fluorescence probe modified from ThT strategically designed for targeting protein assembly rather than ß-sheets and supported by TEM images, we propose that the biphasic ThT signals observed under LLPS-favoring conditions are due to the presence of amorphous aggregates. These aggregates represent an intermediate state that diverges from the direct pathway to ß-sheet-dominant fibrils. Under non-LLPS conditions in contrast (at low pH or at physiological conditions in a construct with key LLPS residues removed), the protein forms a hydrogel. Real-time WAXS data, ThT signals, and TEM images collectively demonstrate that the gelation process circumvents LLPS and yet still results in the formation of fibril-like structural networks. We suggest that the IDR of TDP-43 forms disease-causing amyloid fibrils regardless of the formation pathway. Our findings shed light on why both LLPS-promoting and LLPS-inhibiting mutants are found in TDP-43-related diseases.

Background and aim: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant adverse effect on the mental health of healthcare professionals. This study aims to assess the effects of the prolonged pandemic on burnout and mood disorders and to evaluate the influence of positive vaccination beliefs on these factors at a medical center during the extended COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the results of an online questionnaire survey including burnout status and mood disorders from 2020 to 2022. The factors related to mood moderate/severe disorders and the impact of the positive vaccine belief were also explored. Results: The initial analysis revealed that healthcare professionals continued to experience significant levels of personal and work-related burnout, along with mood disorders. However, the scores and the percentage of moderate to severe burnout gradually decreased. Notably, the percentage of individuals with moderate to severe mood disorders also gradually declined (2020: 13.4%, 2021: 12.3%, 2022: 11.1%). The number of participants who need professional interventions decreased from 56.2% in 2020 to 45.9% in 2021, and 46% in 2022. Multivariate analysis revealed a positive vaccine belief was associated with a lower risk of moderate/severe mood disorders, with odd ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of 0.38 (0.28 - 0.52) and 0.41 (0.30 - 0.52) in the 2021 and 2022 cohorts, respectively. Further investigation revealed that age over 50 was linked to a positive vaccine belief in 2021 and 2022. Within the 2022 cohort, working as nurses was identified as the independent factor associated with a less positive belief, with the OR and 95% CI of 0.49 (0.27 - 0.90). Conclusion: The findings of the present study suggest burnout and mood disorders are still significant during the pandemic. A positive vaccine belief may mitigate pandemic-related mental distress. Further interventions to enhance the belief combined with other supporting measures are important in a long fight against the pandemic.

Background and Objectives: Actin-related protein 2/3 complex subunit 1B (ARPC1B) is an essential subunit of the actin-related protein 2/3 (Arp2/3) complex. While there have been numerous research reports on Arp2/3 in relation to tumors, there needs to be more research on ARPC1B and its role in tumors, particularly at the pan-cancer level. Methods: Utilizing data from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) and genotype-tissue expression (GTEx) databases, we analyzed ARPC1B expression differences in normal, tumor, and adjacent tissues, investigating its correlation with prognosis and clinical stages in various cancers. We conducted gene enrichment analysis and explored ARPC1B's connection to the tumor immune microenvironment and its impact on anti-tumor drug resistance. In addition, in vivo and in vitro experiments have also been carried out to find the mechanism of ARPC1B on ovarian cancer (OV) proliferation and invasion. Results: ARPC1B was highly expressed in 33 tumor types, suggesting its role as a tumor-promoting factor. Its expression correlated with poor prognosis and served as a clinical staging marker in over 10 tumor types. ARPC1B is implicated in various biological processes and signaling pathways, uniquely associated with tumor immunity, indicating immunosuppressive conditions in high-expression cases. High ARPC1B expression was linked to resistance to six anti-tumor drugs. Further experiments showed that ARPC1B can affect the proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion of OV cells through the AKT/PI3K/mTOR pathway. Conclusion: ARPC1B is a biomarker for immune suppression, prognosis, clinical staging, and drug resistance, providing new insights for cancer therapeutics.

Controlling the growth of halide perovskite films under high relative humidity (RH) ambient conditions is significant for practical applications. Here, we control the antisolvent-assisted growth reactions with a constant temperature and low RH. With the hot casting setup and antisolvent during growth reactions, the synthesis of high coverage and pinhole-free CsPb(Br,I)3 films is achieved in ambient air.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as bisphenol S (BPS) are xenobiotic compounds that can disrupt endocrine signaling due to steric similarities to endogenous hormones. EDCs have been shown to induce disruptions in normal epigenetic programming (epimutations) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that predispose disease states. Most interestingly, the prevalence of epimutations following exposure to many EDCs persists over multiple generations. Many studies have described direct and prolonged effects of EDC exposure in animal models, but many questions remain about molecular mechanisms by which EDC-induced epimutations are introduced or subsequently propagated, whether there are cell type-specific susceptibilities to the same EDC, and whether this correlates with differential expression of relevant hormone receptors. We exposed cultured pluripotent (iPS), somatic (Sertoli and granulosa), and primordial germ cell-like (PGCLC) cells to BPS and found that differential incidences of BPS-induced epimutations and DEGs correlated with differential expression of relevant hormone receptors inducing epimutations near relevant hormone response elements in somatic and pluripotent, but not germ cell types. Most interestingly, we found that when iPS cells were exposed to BPS and then induced to differentiate into PGCLCs, the prevalence of epimutations and DEGs was largely retained, however, >90% of the specific epimutations and DEGs were replaced by novel epimutations and DEGs. These results suggest a unique mechanism by which an EDC-induced epimutated state may be propagated transgenerationally.

AIMS: Previous proteomics studies in dysferlinopathy muscle have been limited in scope, often utilizing 2D-electrophoresis and yielding only a small number of differential expression calls. To address this gap, this study aimed to employ high-resolution proteomics to explore the proteomic landscapes of dysferlinopathy and analyze the correlation between muscle pathological changes and alterations in protein expression in muscle biopsies. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive approach to investigate the proteomic profile and disease-associated changes in the muscle tissue proteome from 15 patients with dysferlinopathy, exhibiting varying degrees of dystrophic pathology, alongside age-matched controls. Our methodology encompasses tandem mass tag (TMT)-labeled liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based proteomics, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis, weighted gene co-expression network analysis, and differential expression analysis. Subsequently, we examined the correlation between the expression of key proteins and the clinical characteristics of the patients to identify pathogenic targets associated with DYSF mutations in dysferlinopathy. RESULTS: A total of 1600 differentially expressed proteins were identified, with 1321 showing high expression levels and 279 expressed at lower levels. Our investigation yields a molecular profile delineating the altered protein networks in dysferlinopathy-afflicted skeletal muscle, uncovering dysregulation across numerous cellular pathways and molecular processes, including mRNA metabolic processes, regulated exocytosis, immune response, muscle system processes, energy metabolic processes, and calcium transmembrane transport. Moreover, we observe significant associations between the protein expression of ANXA1, ANXA2, ANXA4, ANXA5, LMNA, PYGM, and the extent of histopathologic changes in muscle biopsies from patients with dysferlinopathy, validated through immunoblotting and immunofluorescence assays. CONCLUSIONS: Through the aggregation of expression data from dysferlinopathy-impacted muscles exhibiting a range of pathological alterations, we identified multiple key proteins associated with the dystrophic pathology of patients with dysferlinopathy. These findings provide novel insights into the pathogenesis of dysferlinopathy and propose promising targets for future therapeutic endeavors.

BACKGROUND: The current mainstream treatment for frozen shoulder is a combination of physiotherapy and intraarticular corticosteroid injections (IACIs). Recently, the ultrasound-guided suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) has developed as a notable alternative option to the mainstream treatment. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare ultrasound-guided SSNBs' effectiveness to IACIs' as treatments for frozen shoulder. STUDY DESIGN: This study was conducted as a prospective single-blind, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital, a medical center in Taipei, Taiwan. METHODS: Patients with frozen shoulder (n = 76) were enrolled as participants and allocated to either an SSNB group (n = 38) or an IACI group (n = 38). Both groups received 2 injections of 20 mg of triamcinolone and 3 mL of 1% lidocaine at 2-week intervals and underwent the same physiotherapy protocol for 3 months. The primary outcome measure was the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI). The secondary outcome measures were the Shoulder Disability Questionnaire (SDQ), the active and passive range of motion (ROM) of each patient's affected shoulder, and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Evaluations were performed at baseline and at 4 and 12 weeks after starting treatment. RESULTS: Both groups achieved significant improvements in all outcome measures, except the general health subscale of the SF-36 at 4 and 12 weeks after starting treatment. For time and group interaction, the results for the SDQ (P = .047) and SF-36 (bodily pain, P = .025) indicated significant differences that favored IACIs. Additionally, the IACI group achieved more favorable outcomes than did the SSNB group on the SPADI (P = .094) and in ROM (i.e., abduction [P = .190] and external rotation [P = .081]) as well as on 2 subscales of the SF-36: bodily pain (P = .059) and role-emotional (P = .072). LIMITATIONS: Our study is limited by the lack of participant stratification based on the stages of frozen shoulder and the 12-week follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: A combination of ultrasound-guided IACIs and physiotherapy should be attempted first as a frozen shoulder treatment.

Recent advancements in tumor immunotherapy, particularly PD-1 targeted therapy, have shown significant promise, marking major progress in tumor treatment approaches. Despite this, the development of resistance to therapy and mechanisms of immune evasion by tumors pose considerable obstacles to the broad application of immunotherapy. This necessitates a deeper exploration of complex immune signaling pathways integral to tumor immunity. This review aims to critically analyze the role of liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) within tumor immunity, specifically its impact on immune signaling pathways and its potential to foster the development of novel cancer therapies. LLPS, a biophysical process newly recognized for its ability to spontaneously segregate and organize biomacromolecules into liquid-like condensates through weak multivalent interactions, offers a novel perspective on the formation of signaling clusters and the functionality of immune molecules. The review delves into the micromolecular mechanisms behind the creation of signaling condensates via LLPS and reviews recent progress in adjusting signaling pathways pertinent to tumor immunity, including the T cell receptor (TCR), B cell receptor (BCR), immune checkpoints, and innate immune pathways such as the cGAS-STING pathway, stress granules, and the ADP-heptose-ALPK1 signaling axis. Furthermore, it considers the prospects of utilizing LLPS to generate groundbreaking cancer therapies capable of navigating past current treatment barriers. Through an extensive examination of LLPS's impact on tumor immunity, the review seeks to highlight novel therapeutic strategies and address the challenges and future directions in this rapidly evolving field.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) raises a global environmental concern impacting the iron cycle. Although the formation of Fe(III) minerals in AMD-impacted waters has previously been reported to be regulated by biological processes, the role of abiotic processes remains largely unknown. This study first reported that a photochemical reaction coupled with O2 significantly accelerated the formation of Fe(III) flocculates (i.e., schwertmannite) in the AMD, as evidenced by the comparison of samples from contaminated sites across different natural conditions at latitudes 24-29° N. Combined with experimental and modeling results, it is further discovered that the intramolecular oxidation of photogenerated Fe(II) with a five-coordinative pyramidal configuration (i.e., [(H2O)5Fe]2+) by O2 was the key in enhancing the photooxidation of Fe(II) in the simulated AMD. The in situ attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy, solvent substitution, and quantum yield analyses indicated that, acting as a precursor for flocculation, [(H2O)5Fe]2+ likely originated from both the dissolved and colloidal forms of Fe(III) through homogeneous and surface ligand-to-metal charge transfers. Density functional theory calculations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy results further suggested that the specific oxidation pathways of Fe(II) produced the highly reactive iron species and triggered the hydrolysis and formation of transient dihydroxo dimers. The proposed new pathways of Fe cycle are crucial in controlling the mobility of heavy metal anions in acidic waters and enhance the understanding of complicated iron biochemistry that is related to the fate of contaminants and nutrients.

Aim: Comparing the safety, effectiveness, and mid-term survival rates of robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) and video-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (VAMIE). Methods: A total of 842 patients undergoing minimally invasive esophagectomy were analyzed, including 694 patients in VAMIE group and 148 in RAMIE group. PSM analysis was applied to generate matched pairs for further comparison. Operative outcomes, postoperative complications and Mid-term outcomes were compared between all patients in matched groups. Results: After 1:4 PSM, 148 patients in the RAMIE and 592 patients in the VAMIE. Compared to VAMIE, RAMIE exhibited earlier removal of chest and neck drainage tubes, shorter postoperative hospital stays, and a higher number of lymph node dissections. However, the surgical duration of RAMIE was longer than that of VAMIE. Postoperative complications were no statistically significant between the RAMIE and VAMIE groups. There was no statistically significant difference in the 3-year OS and DFS between the two groups. Conclusion: Compared to VAMIE, RAMIE emerges as a viable and safe surgical approach and suggests RAMIE as a potential alternative to minimally invasive esophagectomy.

Inspired by advancements in natural language processing, we utilize self-supervised learning and an equivariant graph neural network to develop a unified platform for training generative models capable of generating inorganic crystal structures, as well as efficiently adapting to downstream tasks in material property prediction. To mitigate the challenge of evaluating the reliability of generated structures during training, we employ a generative adversarial network (GAN) with its discriminator being a cost-effective reliability evaluator, significantly enhancing model performance. We demonstrate the utility of our model in optimizing crystal structures under predefined conditions. Without external properties acquired experimentally or numerically, our model further displays its capability to help understand inorganic crystal formation by grouping chemically similar elements. This paper extends an invitation to further explore the scientific understanding of material structures through generative models, offering a fresh perspective on the scope and efficacy of machine learning in material science.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The study is to analyze the clinical characteristics and identify prognostic factors as well as evaluate predictive models in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) from Southern Taiwan. METHODS: The cohort study was conducted using the Chang Gung Research Database. We included patients with ACLF based on the definition provided by the Asian-Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver ACLF Research Consortium (AARC). RESULTS: A total of 231 patients diagnosed with ACLF were included in this study, out of which 26 patients underwent liver transplantation (LT). The primary cause of ACLF was acute exacerbation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 68.4% of cases and followed by severe alcoholic hepatitis (20.8%). Among LT-free patients, the 28-day mortality rate was observed to be 31%. Older age, higher INR and ammonia levels, and the presence of severe hepatic encephalopathy on 3-6 days of treatment were independent predictors of 28-day mortality. The CLIF-C ACLF and COSSH-ACLF scores, evaluated on 3-6 days, demonstrated the highest predictive performance for 28-day mortality. The optimal cut-off values for the CLIF-C ACLF and COSSH-ACLF scores were determined to be 47 and 6.3, respectively. Patients with CLIF-C ACLF score >63 or COSSH-ACLF score >8.1 experienced 100% mortality by day 28. CONCLUSIONS: The CLIF-C ACLF and COSSH-ACLF scores, evaluated within one week after treatment, exhibit strong predictive capabilities for short-term mortality in ACLF patients. These models are valuable tools for guiding timely decision-making, including the consideration of liver transplantation or withdrawal from treatment.

Aging is a multifaceted process characterized by the gradual decline of physiological functions and can be modulated by various internal and external factors. While social interactions have been shown to affect behaviors and physiology in different species, the impact of social partners on aging-related phenotypes and lifespan in mice remains understudied. To address this question, we investigated various aging-related traits and lifespan in two mouse strains, C57BL/6J and BALB/c, under two different housing conditions: mixed-strain and same-strain housing. Analyses using a Generalized Linear Model revealed significant differences between the two strains in several phenotypes, including metabolic, anxiety-like, and electrocardiographic traits. However, surprisingly, housing conditions did not significantly affect most of the examined parameters, including overall lifespan. Only 3 out of 25 traits-body weight change in a metabolic cage, running wheel activity, and survival days of a quartiles of mice with middle lifespans-were influenced by housing conditions in a strain-dependent manner. Together, our study suggested a minimal influence of co-housing with social partners from different genetic backgrounds on aging-related phenotypes. This result demonstrates the feasibility of mixed housing for mouse husbandry and, more importantly, provides valuable insights for future research on the social influences on the aging process in mice.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type (ST) 45 was first reported in Taiwan in 2006. Since then, the prevalence of ST45 MRSA in clinical isolates has increased. This study was carried out to understand the changes in the proportions, evolutionary relationships, and infection advantages of ST45 and its related clones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: S. aureus including MRSA and MSSA (methicillin-sensitive S. aureus), and clonal complex (CC) 45 blood isolates were collected in 2000, 2005, and from January 2010 to August 2014. Molecular typing, multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based phylogenetic analysis were performed. Fitness and virulence analyses were used to understand the infection advantages of the isolates. RESULTS: Among the 67 CC45 isolates, only MSSA ST508 isolates were found in 2000 and 2005. Since 2010, the prevalence of MRSA has increased, t1081/ST45 has become dominant, and MRSA ST508 has been found. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that most of the ST45 isolates were located in a cluster distinct from those of ST508 and ST929. However, the t026 isolates clustered with the ST508 isolates rather than with the other ST45 isolates. Moreover, fitness and virulence analyses revealed that the t1081 isolates had higher hemolytic activity than the t026 and ST508 isolates did. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that the increased prevalence of ST45 MRSA isolates from blood cultures in Taiwan was due to the t1081 isolates, and their high hemolytic activity may provide an infection advantage.

Introduction and importance: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant primary hepatic tumor. However, extrahepatic metastatic sites of HCC with post-therapy dissemination of metastases mimicking primary soft tissue sarcomas with rib metastases are extremely rare. Case presentation: The authors report a unique case of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive HCC with bilateral lung involvement and widespread right-flank soft tissue and rib metastases. The pathological diagnosis after surgical resection confirmed extrahepatic HCC metastasis. Subsequently, adjuvant-targeted and immune-checkpoint inhibitor therapies were still initiated. Clinical discussion: Extrahepatic HCC metastasis, which initially presents at distant sites, is uncommon. HCC commonly metastasizes to the lungs, bones, lymph nodes, kidneys, adrenal glands, and peritoneum/omentum. HCC with aggressive post-scheduled adjuvant therapy to the lungs and hypochondriac soft tissue with rib metastasis is very rare and has a poor prognosis. Conclusion: Although most patients with HCC have disseminated extrahepatic metastases, primary HCC should still be treated. Thus, a review of the history and imaging, histopathology, and immunohistochemical findings is crucial for the definite and differential diagnosis of this tumor.

Supercapacitors have gained increased attention in recent years due to their significant role in energy storage devices; their impact largely depends on the electrode material. The diversity of energy storage mechanisms means that various electrode materials can provide unique benefits for specific applications, highlighting the growing trend towards nanocomposite electrodes. Typically, these nanocomposite electrodes combine pseudocapacitive materials with carbon-based materials to form heterogeneous structural composites, often requiring complex multi-step preparation processes. This study introduces a straightforward approach to fabricate a non-carbon-based Mo@MoO2 nanosheet composite electrode using a one-step thermal evaporating vapor deposition (TEVD) method. This novel electrode features Mo at the core and MoO2 as the shell and demonstrates exceptional electrochemical performance. Specifically, at a current density of 1 A g-1, it achieves a storage capacity of 205.1 F g-1, maintaining virtually unchanged capacity after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles at 2 A g-1. The outstanding long-cycle stability is ascribed to the vertical two-dimensional geometry, the superior conductivity, and pseudocapacitance of the Mo@MoO2 core-shell nanosheets. These attributes significantly improve the electrode's charge storage capacity, charge transfer speed, and structural integrity during the cycling process. The development of the one-step grown Mo@MoO2 nanosheets offers a promising way for the advancement of high-performance, non-carbon-based supercapacitor nanocomposite electrodes.

Lead ions (Pb2+) are heavy metal environmental pollutants that can significantly impact biological health. In this study, the synthesis of a ternary nanocomposite, ErVO4/P@g-C3N4/SnS2, was achieved using a combination of hydrothermal synthesis and mechanical grinding. The as-fabricated photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was found to be an ideal substrate for Pb2+ detection with high sensitivity and reliability. The ErVO4/P@g-C3N4/SnS2/FTO was selected as the substrate because of its remarkable and reliable photocurrent response. The Pb2+ sensor exhibited a low detection limit of 0.1 pM and a broad linear range of 0.002-0.2 nM. Moreover, the sensor exhibited outstanding stability, selectivity, and reproducibility. In real-time applications, it exhibited stable recovery and a low relative standard deviation, ensuring reliable and accurate measurements. The as-prepared PEC sensor was highly stable for the detection of Pb2+ in different water samples. This promising characteristic highlights its significant potential for use in the detection of environmental pollutants.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between prostatic urethral angle (PUA) and the development of surgical capsule calculi (SCC) within the prostate, and to examine the presence and impact of intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 90 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy, with preoperative assessments using both transrectal ultrasound of the prostate (TRUS) and magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were divided into groups with and without SCC and further categorized into type 1 and type 2 stones based on the location and severity of the calculi. Statistical analysis included chi-square and independent sample t-tests, with p<0.05 considered significant. RESULTS: Of the patients, 82.2% were diagnosed with SCC. No significant difference in PUA was found between patients with and without SCC. However, a notable disparity in IPP presence was observed, suggesting an inverse correlation with SCC development. Additionally, no significant differences were identified when comparing the two types of SCC based on PUA and IPP measurements. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of IPP exhibited an inverse relationship with SCC, suggesting diminished urine flow pressure over the prostatic urethra may reduce the likelihood of SCC formation. However, no direct association between PUA and the presence or severity of SCC was identified. These findings highlight the complexity of factors contributing to prostatic calculi development and the potential role of IPP in this context.
