RESUMO
Abstract Introduction: Functional endonasal endoscopic surgery is a frequent surgical procedure among otorhinolaryngologists. In 2014, the European Society of Rhinology published the "European Position Paper on the Anatomical Terminology of the Internal Nose and Paranasal Sinuses", aiming to unify the terms in the English language. We do not yet have a unified terminology in the Portuguese language. Objective: Transcultural adaptation of the anatomical terms of the nose and paranasal cavities of the "European Anatomical Terminology of the Internal Nose and Paranasal Sinuses" to Portuguese. Methods: A group of rhinologists from diverse parts of Brazil, all experienced in endoscopic endonasal surgery, was invited to participate in the creation of this position paper on the anatomical terms of the nose and paranasal sinuses in the Portuguese language according to the methodology adapted from that previously described by Rudmik and Smith. Results: The results of this document were generated based on the agreement of the majority of the participants according to the most popular suggestions among the rhinologists. A cross-cultural adaptation of the sinonasal anatomical terminology was consolidated. We suggest the terms "inferior turbinate", "nasal septum", "(bone/cartilaginous) part of the nasal septum", "(middle/inferior) nasal meatus", "frontal sinus drainage pathway", "frontal recess" and "uncinate process" be standardized. Conclusion: We have consolidated a Portuguese version of the European Anatomical Terminology of the Internal Nose and Paranasal Sinuses, which will help in the publication of technical announcements, scientific publications and the teaching of the internal anatomical terms of the nose and paranasal sinuses in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: Describe anatomical measurements of a selection of laryngeal structures, performing a comparison of such measurements between men and women and between different age groups. STUDY DESIGN: Populational morphometric study. PARTICIPANTS: Larynges from 50 male and 50 female fresh cadavers of older than 40 years were removed during autopsy. METHODS: The following measurements were made on the external angle laryngeal framework between the blades of the thyroid cartilage: width of the thyroid cartilage, distance from the thyroid notch to the anterior commissure (AC), distance from the AC to the inferior thyroid border, distance from the AC to the larynx proeminence, length of membranacea part of vocal fold (VF), length of cartilaginea part of VF, width and thickness of true VF. RESULTS: The differences between men and women were highly significant. All measured values of larynx obtained in the study were greater in men than in women, except for the thyroid angle, which was higher in women (P < 0.05). A significant difference in the comparison between the morphological measurements in the age groups for both men and women was not observed (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The comparison of larynx dimensions showed the presence of sexual dimorphism in the group of South Brazilian people studied. There was no morphometric difference between the larynx samples of the individuals of the same sex after 40 years of age.

AIM: This prospective study investigated the anatomic relations between the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN), the superior thyroid artery (STA) and the thyroid gland in human cadavers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two human cadavers aged over 18 years old, less than 24 hours after death. RESULTS: The mean distance between the EBSLN and the superior pole of the thyroid gland was 7.68 ±3.07 mm. A tangent to the inferior edge of the thyroid cartilage between the EBSLN and the STA measured 4.24 ±2.67 mm. A line from the intersection of the EBSLN - related to the STA - to the superior pole of the thyroid gland measured 9.53 ±4.65 mm. A line from the EBSLN to the midline of the most caudal point of the thyroid cartilage measured 19.70 ±2.82 mm. A line from the RENLS to the midline on the most cranial point of the cricoid cartilage was 18.35 ±3.66 mm. CONCLUSION: There is a variable proximity relation between the EBSLN and the superior pole of the thyroid gland; this distance ranges from 3.25 to 15.75 mm. There was no evidence of significant variation between the measures in the ethnic groups comprising the sample.

Introduction: The literature is not clear in the ultra-structural manifestations of the vocal wrinkles after neural wound. Objective: To verify the alterations that occur in a vocal fold mechanically denervated. Method: In this prospective study, it were utilized 15 hogs of commercial race (Sus scrofa domesticates), with age of 4 to 12 weeks. The animals were distributed in three groups, chosen at random. Everybody was submitted to the denervation of the right vocal fold, with surgical removal of a segment with three centimeters of the recurring right laryngeal nerve. After 45, 90 and 180 days of the operations, it was proceeded the biopsy of the vocal muscles, it was prosecuted the samples for transmission electron microscopy and, for the ultra-structural study, utilized the transmission electron microscopy Philips, model EM208S. Results: The biopsied groups with 45 and 90 days after operation of mechanical denervation, presented disorganization miofibrilar, only vestigial lines Z in many samples, as well like altered mithochondrions presenting limited sizes, and matrix mithocondrial rarefied with rare mithocondrial cristae present. The biopsied group with 180 days after operation of denervation, presented regular sarcomeres, mithocondrions with sizes and regular number with correct positioning between the sarcomerical units. Conclusion: The finds in the ultra-structure of the vocal muscles suggest to re enervation of the muscle being that the muscular mithochondrions were the most sensible structures to the denervated condition, successions by the cytoarchiteture of the miofibrilas; the finds in the ultra-structure of the vocal muscles suggests to reinervation of the muscle in the period of approximately six months.

Various authors have published results related to the ultrastructure of vocal folds in specific areas proceeding from human cadavers. Nevertheless, starting from the premise that a fundamental principle of sampling and the samples should be a true representative of the whole, the authors decided to examine vocal folds from human cadavers and compare them to normal vocal folds from the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus). The findings of these authors demonstrated clearly that the conclusion of Rhodin (1954) is correct, that a biological sample must be preserved immediately after blood circulation ceases, and that the intermediary time between biopsy and fixation cannot be more than 3 minutes. Cells fixed a few hours after death appeared disaggregated, and many of their endocellular components were profoundly altered. The results obtained by the authors suggests that ultrastructural studies with cadaverous material may lead to serious risks or doubts about the accuracy of the results and consequently result in dubious interpretations.
