Se estudió un grupo de 38 pacientes asmáticos para correlacionar evolución clínica con resultados de IgE sérica, RAST y pruebas cutáneas. Los resultados revelan que casi 70 por ciento de los pacientes estudiados tuvieron positividad importante en pruebas cutáneas y/o RAST lo cual confirma que la mayoría de los asmáticos tiene un componente alérgico en su causa. La determinación de IgE sérica total demostró no ser un examen definitivo para confirmar el origen alérgico. Sólo 25 por ciento de los pacientes con asma de evolución más grave tuvieron pruebas cutánes o RAST fuertemente positivos

We studied a group of 38 asthmatic patients to correlate the clinical evolution with results of IgE in serum, RAST and skin tests. Results reveal that almost 70% of the studied patients present important positivity in skin tests or RAST which confirms that the majority of asthmatics have an allergic component in their etiology. The determination of IgE in serum showed not to be a definitive exam to confirm allergic etiology. Only 25% of asthmatic patients with severe evolution presented skin tests or RAST strongly positive.

We compared swab and scraping (Rhino-probe) technics in the nasal cytology obtention for eosinophils count in 36 patients with a range of 2-46 years old (mean age 18.6 years) with diagnosis of Allergic Rhinitis. The eosinophil count with swab technic was between 0-79 cells with average of 6.5 cells and in the scraping (Rhino-probe) was in a rate of 0-100 cells with a average of 13.4 cells. Of the 36 patients with Rhinitis seen at our clinic, 13 (36%) of positive with swab and 19 (53%) with scraping technics (Rhino-probe) with percent differential of 17%. The comparison between the eosinophils count with both technics was p less than 0.05 for scraping (Rhino-probe) technic.
