INTRODUÇÃO: A cirurgia de revascularização miocárdica continua sendo realizada em grande número de pacientes. Apesar dos enxertos arteriais serem preferidos devido sua patência, enxertos de veia safena continuam sendo usados regularmente. Os aneurismas de enxertos venosos são uma rara complicação cirúrgica tardia, aprensentandose em média 10 anos após a revascularização. A maioria dos pacientes com aneurisma são assintomáticos e suas principais complicações são embolização distal, IAM e formação de fístula e rotura. RELATO DE CASO: Paciente feminina, 65 anos, com antecedente de RVM com ponte mamária para coronária descendente anterior (MIE-DA) e pontes safena para diagonal, primeiro e segundo marginal e coronária direita. Em cateterismo 2023, ponte MIE-DA estava pérvia, com oclusão das demais. Relatou dor torácica típica, com piora do padrão há 15 dias. Apresentou ECG com padrão de isquemia circunferencial e curva ascendente de troponina, sendo Internada por IAMSSST. No ecocardiograma visualizou-se aumento da porção distal de aorta ascendente com grande dilatação e formação de uma neocavidade medindo 63x57mm, adjacente a parede posterior da aorta ascendente próximo a junção sinotubular com fluxo, rechaçando a parede do átrio esquerdo e o anel valvar mitral e possível compressão do tronco da coronária esquerda e artéria pulmonar. À ressonância cardíaca evidenciou neocavidade junto à raiz da aorta e porção ascendente com sinais de compressão extrínseca importante das artérias pulmonares. Foi considerado como hipótese diagnóstica um aneurisma do enxerto Ao-MG2, com compressão extrínseca da circulação coronariana causando dor e isquemia. DISCUSSÃO: Aneurisma de enxertos venosos geralmente são assintomáticos, mesmo quando possuem diâmetros entre 5 e 10 cm. A compressão do leito coronariano nativo por efeito de massa pode levar a IAM, até mesmo com alteração de ECG, como observado no caso relatado. O tratamento mais comumente proposto é a correção cirúrgica, contudo, em pacientes com múltiplas toracotomias e alto risco cirúrgico, pode-se optar pela embolização percutânea. CONCLUSÃO: Apesar de complicação relativamente rara, os aneurismas de enxertos venosos devem ser considerados diante de episódio de dor torácica em pacientes previamente submetidos à revascularização miocárdica.

RESUMO

Gender relations are a set of socially determined norms and rules that assign values, characteristics, and expectations to individuals based on their biological sex. These aspects also influence the clinician-patient relationship, since it has been for a long time based on cisheteronormativity. However, this attitude alienated the LGBTQIA+ community from health services. Global and specific gynecologic care needs to be offered to the LGBTQIA+ population, which has demands for sexual and reproductive health care. In this narrative review, we bring conceptual aspects, gender identity and expression, sexual history, screening for cancer and other care to the community.

Objectives. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are recurrent in the footwear industry, resulting in absenteeism. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the influence of overtime work and physical recovery time on the occurrence of WMSD-related absenteeism using a system dynamics model. As ergonomic methods have limitations in quantitatively simulating the behavior of these relationships, the integration of computational modeling techniques has emerged as a methodological alternative to bridge this gap. Methods. An ergonomic work analysis (EWA) was developed in a production cell of a large company. A model of causal relationships (causal loop diagram) and a simulation model (flow and stock diagram) were then developed, where three scenarios for overtime and physical recovery time were analyzed. Results. Working an additional hour resulted in a 42% increase in physical overload, leading to 7.62 leave requests per year and 78.7 days of employee absenteeism. Increasing the physical recovery time by 15 min reduced the overload to 36.5%, resulting in 6.8 leave requests per year and 71.1 days of employee absenteeism. Conclusions. Properly managing excess workload and providing adequate physical recovery for professionals is necessary to mitigate the productivity impacts of absenteeism in the footwear industry.

The multiplex molecular diagnostic assays described for severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), influenza A (IAV) and B (IBV) viruses have been mainly based on real-time reaction, which limits their access to many laboratories or diagnostic institutions. To contribute to available strategies and expand access to differential diagnosis, we describe an end-point multiplex RT-PCR targeting SARS-CoV-2, IAV and IBV with simultaneous endogenous control amplification. Initially, we looked for well-established primers sets for SARS-CoV-2, IAV, IBV and RNAse P whose amplicons could be distinguished on agarose gel. The multiplex assay was then standardized by optimizing the reaction mix and cycle conditions. The limit of detection (LoD) was determined using titrated viruses (for SARS-CoV-2 and IAV) and by dilution from a pool of IBV-positive samples. The diagnostic performance of the multiplex was evaluated by testing samples with different RNAse P and viral loads, previously identified as positive or negative for the target viruses. The amplicons of IAV (146 bp), SARS-CoV-2 (113 bp), IBV (103 bp) and RNAse P (65 bp) were adequately distinguished in our multiplex. The LoD for SARS-CoV-2, IAV and IBV was 0.02 TCID50/ml, 0.07 TCID50/ml and 10-3 from a pool of positive samples, respectively. All samples positive for SARS-CoV-2 (n=70, Ct 17.2-36.9), IAV (n=53, Ct 14-34.9) and IBV (n=12, Ct 23.9-31.9) remained positive in our multiplex assay. RNAse P from negative samples (n=40, Ct 25.2-30.2) was also amplified in the multiplex. Overall, our assay is a timely and alternative tool for detecting SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses in laboratories with limited access to supplies/equipment.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) with laser on the inflammatory process in an experimental in vitro model of ACO. The groups were: (1) human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B); (2) BEAS-2B cells treated with dexamethasone; (3) BEAS-2B cells irradiated with laser; (4) BEAS-2B cells stimulated with cigarette smoke extract (CSE) + House Dust Mite (HDM); (5) BEAS-2B cells stimulated with CSE + HDM and treated with dexamethasone; (6) BEAS-2B cells incubated with CSE + HDM and irradiated with laser. After 24 h, cytokines were quantified. There was a reduction in TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-17, IL-21, IL-23, and an increase in IL-10 and IFN-γ in cells from the laser-irradiated ACO group compared to only ACO group. With these results, we can suggest that photobiomodulation acts in the modulation of inflammation observed in ACO, and may be a treatment option.

Mammalian and reptilian vascular tissues present basal release of 6-nitrodopamine, which is reduced when the tissues are pre-incubated with the NO synthase inhibitor L-NG-Nitro arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), or when the endothelium is mechanically removed. 6-Nitrodopamine induces vasorelaxation in pre-contracted vascular rings by antagonizing the dopaminergic D2-like receptor. Here it was investigated whether male swine vessels (including carotid, left descendent coronary, renal, and femoral arteries) release 6-nitrodopamine, dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline, as measured by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The in vitro vasorelaxant action of 6-nitrodopamine was evaluated in carotid, coronary, renal, and femoral arteries precontracted by U-46619 (3 nM), and compared to that induced by the dopamine D2-receptor antagonist L-741,626. Expression of tyrosine hydroxylase and the neuromaker calretinin was investigated by immunohistochemistry. All vascular tissues presented basal release of endothelium-derived catecholamines. The relaxation induced by 6-nitrodopamine was not affected by preincubation of the tissues with either L-NAME (100 µM, 30-min preincubation) or the heme-site inhibitor of soluble guanylyl cyclase ODQ (100 µM, 30-min preincubation). Electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced contractions were significantly potentiated by previous incubation with L-NAME, but unaffected by ODQ preincubation. The contractions induced by EFS were reduced by preincubation with either 6-nitrodopamine or L-741,626. Immunohistochemistry in all arteries revealed the presence of tyrosine hydroxylase in the endothelium, whereas immunoreactivity for calretinin was negative. Swine vessels present basal release of endothelium-derived catecholamines and expression of tyrosine hydroxylase in the endothelium. The vasodilation induced by 6-nitrodopamine is due to blockade of dopaminergic D2-like receptors.

PURPOSE: After radical prostatectomy (RP), it is rarely acknowledged that several sexual dysfunctions can arise. These include issues in the orgasmic domain (e.g., decreased orgasm intensity, dysorgasmia), problems with ejaculation (e.g., absence of ejaculation), the development of penile deformities, and low sexual desire. This article aims to report the occurrence of orgasmic and ejaculatory dysfunction when actively investigated, documenting those rates and characterizing specific features of these conditions following RP. METHODS: This study has analyzed retrospective data from men who underwent RP and were experiencing erectile dysfunction. During a structured visit, patients were systematically questioned about dysorgasmia, altered orgasmic sensation, climacturia, and arousal incontinence. Continuous variables were analyzed using the Student T or ANOVA tests, while categorical variables were analyzed using Chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests. The associations were described as odds ratios with precise confidence intervals. All tests were two sided; a p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Sixty patients were included, out of which 3 (5%) reported dysorgasmia, while 33.3% presented a decrease in orgasm intensity. Climacturia was reported as the most common orgasmic disorder in 40 (66.6%) patients. However, only 14 patients (35%) reported that it frequently occurs, i.e., more than half of the time. Among the patients who reported climacturia, 72.5% classified it as mild losses. Additionally, arousal incontinence (AI) was noted in the study by 19 (26.3%) patients. CONCLUSION: Our study highlights the importance of discussing orgasmic dysfunctions after RP, which can be frequent and bothersome but are often overlooked in preoperative counseling.

The aims of this work were to optimize the production of Erwinia carotovoral-asparaginase II enzyme in Escherichia coli by different fed-batch cultivation strategies using a benchtop bioreactor and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of the recombinant enzyme against different acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell lines. The highest enzyme activities (∼98,000 U/L) were obtained in cultures using the DO-stat feeding strategy with induction in 18 h of culture. Under these experimental conditions, the maximum values for recombinant l-asparaginase II (rASNase) yield per substrate, rASNase yield per biomass, and productivity were approximately 1204 U/gglucose, 3660 U/gcells, and 3260 U/(L·h), respectively. This condition was efficient for achieving high yields of the recombinant enzyme, which was purified and used in in vitro antileukemic potential tests. Of all the leukemic cell lines tested, RS4;11 showed the highest sensitivity to rASNase, with an IC50 value of approximately 0.0006 U/mL and more than 70% apoptotic cells. The study demonstrated that the cultivation strategies used were efficient for obtaining high yield and productivity of rASNase with therapeutic potential inasmuch as cytotoxic activity and induction of apoptosis were demonstrated for this protein.

Abstract Objective: To estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and severe deficiency in children and adolescents, in a large Brazilian sample. Methodology: Results of 413,988 25(OH)D measurements in children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years collected between 01/2014 and 10/2018 were obtained from the database of a Clinical Laboratory. In this population, 25 hydroxyvitamin D concentrations below 20 ng/mL are considered deficient, and below 12 ng/mL as severe deficiency. All measurements were performed by immunoassay and the results were distributed by gender, age group, seasonality, and latitude. Results: The mean of 25(OH)D levels was 29.2 ng/mL with a standard deviation of 9.2 ng/mL. Of the total samples, 0.8% had a concentration < 12 ng/mL, and 12.5% of the samples had a concentration < 20 ng/mL, with a higher prevalence in females. Children under 2 years of age had the lowest prevalence. The effects of latitude and seasonality were quite evident. In samples of female adolescents from the southern region in winter, 36% of vitamin D deficiency and 5% of severe deficiency were found. Conclusion: In this large number of measurements of 25(OH)D in children and adolescents, 12.5% had a deficiency and 0.8% had severe deficiency. A greater deficiency was observed among adolescents, especially females, which raises questions about the need for supplementation during this period of life.

6-Cyanodopamine is a novel catecholamine released from rabbit isolated heart. However, it is not known whether this catecholamine presents any biological activity. Here, it was evaluated whether 6-cyanodopamine (6-CYD) is released from rat vas deferens and its effect on this tissue contractility. Basal release of 6-CYD, 6-nitrodopamine (6-ND), 6-bromodopamine, 6-nitrodopa, and 6-nitroadrenaline from vas deferens were quantified by LC-MS/MS. Electric-field stimulation (EFS) and concentration-response curves to noradrenaline, adrenaline, and dopamine of the rat isolated epididymal vas deferens (RIEVD) were performed in the absence and presence of 6-CYD and /or 6-ND. Expression of tyrosine hydroxylase was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The rat isolated vas deferens released significant amounts of both 6-CYD and 6-ND. The voltage-gated sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin had no effect on the release of 6-CYD, but it virtually abolished 6-ND release. 6-CYD alone exhibited a negligible RIEVD contractile activity; however, at 10 nM, 6-CYD significantly potentiated the noradrenaline- and EFS-induced RIEVD contractions, whereas at 10 and 100 nM, it also significantly potentiated the adrenaline- and dopamine-induced contractions. The potentiation of noradrenaline- and adrenaline-induced contractions by 6-CYD was unaffected by tetrodotoxin. Co-incubation of 6-CYD (100 pM) with 6-ND (10 pM) caused a significant leftward shift and increased the maximal contractile responses to noradrenaline, even in the presence of tetrodotoxin. Immunohistochemistry revealed the presence of tyrosine hydroxylase in both epithelial cell cytoplasm of the mucosae and nerve fibers of RIEVD. The identification of epithelium-derived 6-CYD and its remarkable synergism with catecholamines indicate that epithelial cells may regulate vas deferens smooth muscle contractility.

Biodosimetry can define risks in inhabitants of areas with potential contaminants, ensuring environmental protection and living conditions due to toxic and radioactive effects. This study aimed to evaluate metals and radionuclides in dental structures and alveolar bones in residents of a uranium area in Paraíba and Pernambuco, Brazil. Eighty-nine specimens were pulverized, fractionated, and chemically prepared for analysis by EDXRF, FAAS, and ICP-MS. Levels of Ca, Cu, Fe, Si, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Ti, V, Zn, K, Mn, Th, and U were investigated. Higher concentrations were measured for Ca, with an average of 272,986.4 mg kg-1. Ni presented in lower concentrations, with an average of 30.4 mg kg-1. For U, concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 145.0 mg kg-1, with more than 27% of the samples above the reference value of 8.1 µg kg-1. For Th, almost 38% of the results were above the limit of 3.5 µg kg-1. In the bone spicules, the contents of U and Th ranged from 45.1 to 1451.2 µg kg-1 and from 7.5 to 78.4 µg kg-1, in this order. The levels of radionuclides were more expressive for the teeth collected in São José do Sabugi, suggesting contamination through food and water consumption. In the bone spicules, the levels of U were up to 179 times higher than the safety limit. The results indicate a possible risk of contamination with probable induced radiobiological effects.

Soil mineralogy and texture are directly related to soil carbon due to the physical properties of the clay surface. Traditional techniques for quantifying carbon in soil are time-consuming and expensive, making large-scale quantification for mapping unfeasible. The alternative is the use of soil sensors, such as diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), an economical, fast, and accurate technique for predicting carbon stocks. In this sense, this study aimed to (a) investigate the relationship of C with different soil mineralogical, chemical, and physical attributes for different geological and geomorphological compartments; (b) understand which spectral bands are most important for estimating C content; (c) estimate C content from diffuse reflectance spectroscopy using different mathematical techniques and indicate which one is the best for tropical soil conditions; and (d) map C contents in detail. The study area was the Western Plateau of São Paulo (WPSP), which covers approximately 13 million hectares (~ 48% of the State of São Paulo, Brazil). A total of 265 samples were collected in this area. The attributes clay, silt, sand, crystalline and non-crystalline iron, base saturation, soil density, total pore volume, total C, C stock, kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) and hematite/(hematite + goethite), hematite and goethite contents, and spectral curves were evaluated. The spectra were recorded at 0.5-nm intervals, with an integration time of 2.43 nm s-1 over the 350 to 2500-nm range (350-800 nm-visible-VIS and 801-2500 nm-near-infrared-NIR). The data were subjected to descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, stepwise analysis, and cluster grouping for characterization purposes; partial least squares regression (PLSR) and random forest (RF) for estimation purposes; and geostatistics analysis for creation of spatial maps. Our results indicate that the highest C contents are associated with more clayey soils, oxidic mineralogy, higher total pore volume, and lower soil density in highly dissected basalt compartments. The random forest algorithm associated with the Vis-NIR spectral range is more efficient for estimating and mapping C contents. This suggests that integrating diffuse reflectance spectroscopy with machine learning techniques holds promise for shaping public policies related to land use, mitigating CO2 emissions, and facilitating the implementation of carbon credit policies in a rapid and economically efficient manner.

The development and course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are significantly influenced by inflammation and oxidative stress. Antioxidant therapy is a promising therapeutic option to enhance the clinical results of these individuals in this particular scenario. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of curcumin, with or without piperine, on cytokines, fecal calprotectin (CalF), and oxidative stress enzymatic and non-enzymatic indicators in patients with IBD. METHODS: Patients with Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) who were at least 18 years old and had intact liver and kidney function participated in this randomized, double-blind trial (trial registration: ensaiosclinicos.gov.br as RBR-89q4ydz). For 12 weeks, participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: placebo, curcumin (1000 mg/day), or curcumin plus piperine (1000 mg + 10 mg/day). In order to examine oxidative stress indicators, CalF, and pro-inflammatory cytokines, blood and fecal samples were obtained, both prior to and following the intervention time. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, sex, and type of IBD, the curcumin plus piperine group had substantially higher serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) than the placebo group (4346.9 ± 879.0 vs. 3614.5 ± 731.5; p = 0.041). There were no discernible variations between the groups in CalF, inflammatory markers, or other indicators of oxidative stress. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), our study indicates that a 12-week curcumin plus piperine treatment effectively increases enzymatic antioxidant defense, especially SOD. These results demonstrate the potential therapeutic benefits of managing redox imbalance in individuals with IBD.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of soybean oil inclusion in diets on feeding behaviour, digestibility, performance, and blood metabolites of feedlot lambs. Forty non-castrated Santa Inês lambs with a mean age of 5 months and initial body weight of 34.88 ± 3.19 kg were used in a 40-day feeding trial. The lambs were distributed in five experimental diets with the inclusion of increasing soybean oil (SO) levels: 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 g/kg DM. The SO inclusion promoted a linear reduction in DM intake (p < 0.001), crude protein (CP, p < 0.001), non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC, p < 0.001), and total digestible nutrients (TDN, p = 0.004). There was an increasing quadratic effect on the intake of ether extract (EE; p = 0.002) and decreasing for neutral detergent fiber (p = 0.005). The soybean oil inclusion promoted the greater apparent digestibility of CP (p = 0.016), EE (p = 0.005), NDFom (p < 0.001), and TDN (p < 0.001); on the other hand, the apparent digestibility of NFC (p = 0.005) was decreased. The average daily gain decreased (p < 0.001) with SO inclusion. The SO inclusion increased feeding time (p = 0.004), reduced the efficiency of DM rumination (p = 0.001), and reduced the concentration of blood N-ureic (p < 0.001). Considering the productive parameters, SO can be included in diets and it is recommended that we include SO of up to 41 g/kg DM in diets for fattening lambs as the ideal maximum level. The strategy implemented to adapt lambs to increasing levels of high-fat diet mitigated the detrimental effects of lipids on the rumen, with high-density energy intake being the constraining factor on performance.

Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) is a fish with a high production potential in Brazil. However, one limitation is the excessive amount of ether extract in its carcass, an undesirable characteristic for the consumer. One approach to overcome this limitation is to improve carcass quality through zootechnical additives such as caffeine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementing the diet of pacu with caffeine on cut yield, biological indices, and carcass composition. Two hundred pacu with an initial weight of 1,687 g were used. The animals were allocated to 20 aquaculture cages of 1 m³, with 10 animals per cage. A completely randomized design with four treatments and five replicates was used. The treatments evaluated consisted of four inclusion levels of caffeine: T1 = 0.00 g; T2 = 0.16 g; T3 = 0.32 g, and T4 = 0.48 g caffeine.kg-1 of feed. The findings show that caffeine can be recommended as a diet supplement for carcass improvement of pacu, reducing the fat content and increasing the protein content of the carcass. Caffeine up to 0.32 g.kg-1 of feed can be added to the diet of pacu without affecting its performance or cut yield.

OBJECTIVE: The transgender population in Brazil faces marginalization and difficulties in accessing education and health, leading many individuals to self-medicate. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the implementation of Specialized Centers in the Transsexualizing Process (SCTP) on the use of cross-sex hormone therapy (CSHT) without medical prescription, as well as the level of education and mental health profile of these individuals. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with data from physical and electronic medical records between September 2017 and February 2023 regarding the use of CSHT before and after the implementation of two SCTP in the state of Bahia, Brazil, in addition to data on education level, previous diagnosis of anxiety and depression of patients. RESULTS: A total of 219 participants, 127 transgender men (TM) and 92 transgender women and travestis (TrTW), were assessed. A significant reduction in the prevalence of self-medication was observed in both TrTW (92.98% before and 51.43% after, p<0.001), and TM (47.17% before and 25.67% after, p = 0.010) with the implementation of SCTP. Transgender individuals who used CSHT before accessing the service were found to have a lower prevalence of depression. Self-medication was not significantly associated with education or anxiety in our sample. CONCLUSION: The results indicate the need for the expansion of SCTP, as they were associated with lower rates of self-medication in the transgender population.

Despite all the scientific progress in recent decades to unravel the immune processes and the way the parasite bypasses the immune system, Chagas disease is still a major public health problem, affecting an estimated 3.5 million people. Among the components that may participate in the response against the parasite, testosterone has been gaining more and more visibility. Studies indicate that the parasite itself seems to carry out steroidogenesis, in which, in co-culture with androgen precursors, T. cruzi has been shown to produce TS, but the purpose of the TS synthesized by the parasite and how this can influence its invasion glycoproteins is still unclear unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of testosterone in Trypanosoma cruzi infection on the immune response of bone marrow-derived macrophages. Bone marrow from male rats was extracted and cultured with RMPI medium containing 30% L929 cell supernatant for macrophage differentiation. The cells were incubated for 10 days and, after this period, they were seeded in 96 wells in the amount of 1 x 105 cells per well. TS was added at different concentrations of 20 µM, 10 µM, 5 µM and 1 µM and then infected with the Y strain of T. cruzi, at a rate of 10 parasites per cell, with the culture remaining for six, 12 and 24 h. The supernatant was collected and the production of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and the number of cell parasites was assessed by staining with 4'-6'-diamino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and ranked by high Content Screening (HSC). The parasite was then cultured with the addition of TS, at the mentioned concentrations, leaving it for six and 12 h and then performing the RT-PCR of the mucins. DAPI staining revealed a significant increase in the number of parasites in cells containing TS. The exception was observed when 1 µM of hormone/well was used. A reduction in TNF production was found with 20 and 10 µM of TS for 6 h stimulation, although increased levels were observed with 5 and 1 µM, similar to the infected control. However, there was an increase in TNF production and not after 12 h. The relative expression of parasite glycoprotein 82 was increased with the presence of TS in the medium, regardless of time. Our data suggest that TS may contribute to cellular immunosuppression, increasing parasite infection in the cell, as well as inflammatory mediators that lead to cell and tissue damage in infected individuals, as well as the possible use of TS to allow their invasion into the cell hosts.

INTRODUCTION: The International Serous Fluid Cytopathology Reporting System (TIS) was developed to standardize communication among health professionals reporting analyses of serous fluid samples. The categories include non-diagnosis (ND), negative for malignancy (NFM), atypia of undetermined significance (AUS), suspected malignancy (SFM), and malignant (MAL). Each category was characterized by a risk of malignancy (ROM). METHODS: We performed a literature review to analyze studies related to TIS using several sources, including PubMed, followed by a search of relevant cytopathology journal websites (American Cancer Society, Diagnostic Cytopathology, Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology, and Acta Cytologica and Cytopathology). The search included articles published between January 2020 and December 2023, using the terms "international AND serous fluid system." RESULTS: We identified 257 articles, of which 20 addressed the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The overall ROMs for each category were 23.55% for ND, 16.46% for NFM, 50.78% for AUS, 91.34% for SFM, and 98.21% for MAL. CONCLUSION: Considering the TIS-recommended ROM rates, the ND category was between the suggested intervals, while the SFM category rate was bigger than expected. The other categories (NFM, AUS, and MAL) were below expected values. SFM and MAL had a stronger association with MAL results. New studies are needed to determine each category's ROM rate from TIS accurately.

The maternal diet and egg incubation temperature are some of the factors that can influence the embryonic development and performance of the newly chicks at 15 d of age. This study evaluated the effects of adding a blend of organic acids, essential oils, curcumin, tannins, vitamin E, and zinc microencapsulated in to the diet of female quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) on their productive, reproductive performance and redox parameters of their eggs and the interaction of maternal diet × incubation temperature on embryo (E16 and E18) and chicks development. At 98 d of age, 64 female quails with a mean body weight of 150 g ± 0.5 were distributed into two treatments: a Basal diet or a diet supplemented with blend (Sannimix). The eggs from each female were incubated at 37.5°C (Control) and 38.5°C (High Temperature) throughout the incubation period. After hatching, chicks were distributed in a 2 (maternal diet) × 2 (incubation temperature) factorial design. Female quails supplemented with Sannimix showed better productive and reproductive performance and produced higher-quality embryos. Their offspring had greater weight at hatch and at 15 d of age. The eggs and offspring of supplemented with Sannimix female quails showed better oxidative stability. At E16 and E18, High Temperature increased yolk sac utilization and gene expression of the growth hormone receptor (GHR). At E16, embryos from supplemented with Sannimix female quail had higher expression of insulin-like growth factor type I (IGFI) and heat shock protein 70 kDa genes. At 15 d of age, highest expression of the GHR and IGFI genes was observed in chicks from female quails fed the Sannimix diet, regardless of incubation temperature. Regarding the maternal diet × incubation temperature an improved result was observed for chicks from female quails fed with Sannimix even when eggs are exposed to High Temperature during the incubation. The supplementation of quail diets with blend Sannimix improves productive and reproductive performance, egg quality and their embryos, as well as their offspring quality.

Plastics derived from fossil fuels are used ubiquitously owing to their exceptional physicochemical characteristics. However, the extensive and short-term use of plastics has caused environmental challenges. The biotechnological plastic conversion can help address the challenges related to plastic pollution, offering sustainable alternatives that can operate using bioeconomic concepts and promote socioeconomic benefits. In this context, using soil from a plastic-contaminated landfill, two consortia were established (ConsPlastic-A and -B) displaying versatility in developing and consuming polyethylene or polyethylene terephthalate as the carbon source of nutrition. The ConsPlastic-A and -B metagenomic sequencing, taxonomic profiling, and the reconstruction of 79 draft bacterial genomes significantly expanded the knowledge of plastic-degrading microorganisms and enzymes, disclosing novel taxonomic groups associated with polymer degradation. The microbial consortium was utilized to obtain a novel Pseudomonas putida strain (BR4), presenting a striking metabolic arsenal for aromatic compound degradation and assimilation, confirmed by genomic analyses. The BR4 displays the inherent capacity to degrade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and produce polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) containing hydroxyvalerate (HV) units that contribute to enhanced copolymer properties, such as increased flexibility and resistance to breakage, compared with pure PHB. Therefore, BR4 is a promising strain for developing a bioconsolidated plastic depolymerization and upcycling process. Collectively, our study provides insights that may extend beyond the artificial ecosystems established during our experiments and supports future strategies for effectively decomposing and valorizing plastic waste. Furthermore, the functional genomic analysis described herein serves as a valuable guide for elucidating the genetic potential of microbial communities and microorganisms in plastic deconstruction and upcycling.
