RESUMO

Several phytogeographic regions (Cerrado, Pantanal, Atlantic Forest, Gran Chaco, and Chiquitano Dry Forests) converge in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and influence regional biodiversity. Despite a list of birds in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul being published by Nunes et al. (2017), it is necessary to update and critically review avifauna records. In this study, we gathered the results of several records obtained from species lists and online data platforms of the 336 sites in this state over the last decades and grouped them into Main (Primary and Secondary) and Tertiary Lists. The avifauna of Mato Grosso do Sul is composed of 678 species, of which 643 (95%) have records proving their occurrence (Primary List), whereas 34 still lack documentation (Secondary List). The number of related species for Mato Grosso do Sul represents 34% of the Brazilian avifauna. Some species stand out for their unique occurrence in Mato Grosso do Sul, such as Melanerpes cactorum, Celeus lugubris, Phaethornis subochraceus, and Cantorchilus guarayanus, reflecting the influence of different phytogeographic regions of the Chaco and Chiquitano Dry Forests. Migrants represent 20% of the bird community occurring in the state, of which 93 species correspond to migrants from various regions of South America (south and west) and 40 to boreal migrants. Thirty-three species perform nomadic movements across the Pantanal Plain and other regions of the state. Thirty-one species are included in some conservation-threatened categories of global and/or national endangered species lists. Other 30 species are included in the near-threatened category at the global level and 23 at the national level. In addition, species typical of dry forests (in Serra da Bodoquena and Maciço do Urucum) and those from the Atlantic Forest in the south of the state deserve attention due to their restricted distribution and the high anthropogenic pressure on their habitat.(AU)

RESUMO

Introduction: Presidential medical units are intended to protect the dignitary's health in multiple aspects and work in close relationship with security. There are three central areas of coverage: myocardial infarction, stroke and trauma. By 2016 we had not found information about the resources on medical centers in Argentina and their integration into healthcare networks. Objective: Describe the relevant medical centers and their available resources for the medical coverage areas mentioned. Methods: It is a descriptive, cross-sectional study between 12/2016 and 8/2019. The sampling was not probabilistic and for convenience. Variables were reported as proportions and comparisons were made using the chi-square test or Fischer. Results: 232 centers were entered, 66.8% in capital cities and 67% in the public sector. Capitals were associated with a greater presence of resources: category 3 centers (OR 7.85; 95% CI 3.66-16.84; p <0.000001), angiography (OR 5.94; 95% CI 3.24-10.28; p <0.000001 ), tomography (OR 3.41; 95% CI 1.51-7.69; p=0.002), thrombolytics (OR 3.24; 95% CI 1.37-7.76; p=0.005); except trauma surgery (OR 1.83; 95% CI 0.75-4.46; p=0.17). Private centers were associated with greater resources for reperfusion; and public centers for trauma treatment. Conclusions: There is an unbalanced distribution of key resources between capital and non-capital cities in large geographical areas that makes it impossible to develop an adequate network for the treatment of heart attack, stroke and trauma. The best quality of care requires combining public and private networks.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of iron deficiency in pulmonary hypertension, to compare it with other patient populations and to establish its prognostic value. Methods: This was a prospective, observational study. Serum iron parameters were measured in consecutive patients diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and compared with heart failure patients and healthy controls. A correlation was sought between serum iron levels and functional class, distance walked in the 6-minute walk test and NT-proBNP. Results: A total of 107 patients were included in the study: 60 with pulmonary hypertension, 26 with heart failure and 21 healthy controls. Iron deficiency was 78.3% in patients with pulmonary hypertension, 45.8% in those with heart failure and 23.8% in healthy controls (p<0.001). The prevalence of anemia was 25% in pulmonary hypertension, 26.9% in heart failure and 19% in healthy controls (p<0.8). In patients with functional class I-II, iron deficiency was: 78% in pulmonary hypertension vs. 43.5% in heart failure (p<0.005), and anemia was 17.1% vs. 28%, respectively (p<0.2). A significant correlation was found between serum iron and transferrin saturation with the distance walked in the 6-minute walk test (r: 0.35; p<0.01 and r: 0.34; p<0.01, respectively) and no correlation was found for transferrin and ferritin. Also, no significant correlation was found between iron deficiency and functional class or NT-proBNP. Conclusions: Iron deficiency is highly prevalent in pulmonary hypertension, and superior to that found in heart failure patients and healthy controls. No relationship was established with anemia, which was similar in the three groups. Serum iron is clearly related with the distance walked, but not with functional class, a result which may be attributed to the limited number of patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The respiratory sinus arrhythmia is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. It consists of phasic variations of sinus cycle length produced by an autonomic reflex, and is characterized by increased heart rate during inspiration and decline in expiration. This phenomenon is due to a reduction of the parasympathetic tone during inspiration, causing a rise in the heart rate, while during expiration the opposite phenomenon occurs. This arrhythmia is more frequent in young adults, although it can also be seen in any age group. METHODS AND RESULTS: We report the case of a 46-year-old female, who was transferred to our institution because of dizziness and loss of balance reported during deep inspiration, associated with sinus bradycardia and atrioventricular block.

RESUMO

We present a review on the principal interactions between birds and termites in Brazil. We found 218 bird species feeding on termites or using termitaria for nesting or perching. Termites were mentioned as food source for 179 bird species. Alates were the most consumed caste. Termitaria were mentioned as nest site for 45 bird species. Some bird species also perch on the top of termite mounds to search for their prey or to conduct territorial and/or courtship displays. Considering all interactions between both animal groups, little is known about the identification of termite genera or species. Therefore, we suggest more detailed studies to be conducted on the natural history and ecology of interactions between birds and termites in Brazil.

The Gray-backed Tachuri (Polystictus superciliaris) is a Tyrannidae restricted to eastern Brazilian highlands. Its population and range are still thought to be declining mainly due to habitat loss, caused by land use. We evaluated the impacts on its range (increase or decrease, displacement in latitude and altitude), considering possible effects caused by inappropriate land use and climatic changes. For this purpose, we modeled its current range and estimated its overlap between the predicted area and future scenarios. We also analyzed the efficiency of the Brazilian reserves to the species’ protection. The range established by the Maxent model was 76.1% lower than that available in the literature and presented a decrease in the future. Range contraction for the periods under consideration ranged from 22.5% to 77.3%. The distribution center shifts to the southwest (from 102.5 km to 275.4 km) and to higher elevations (1,102 m to 1,428 m). From the predicted range, 20% are under some kind of human occupation. The Brazilian reserves partially protect the species, with only 12% of its range, from the 44.2% expected. Based on these predictions, and depending on the species’ dispersal ability and adaptation, it may become vulnerable in the period of 2080. This study demonstrates that the most important areas for maintaining populations of P. superciliaris now and in the future are those located in the ‘Iron Quadrangle’, especially the Serra da Gandarela, where it was partially protected by the recently decreed Gandarela National Park. This region should receive special attention because it is strongly threatened by iron mining in areas relevant for conservation located outside this reserve.

Polystictus superciliaris (Wied, 1831) is a small tyrant-flycatcher endemic to mountaintops in the highlands of eastern Brazil. In this paper we present the first description of the breeding biology of P. superciliaris and estimate its reproductive success from a population inhabiting rocky outcrops. This study was conducted during 2005 in the Parque Estadual da Serra do Rola Moça, municipality of Nova Lima (20°03'S, 44°00'W), state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Fourteen pairs of P. superciliaris were banded and monitored. The onset of the breeding season in 2005 was assumed to have been sometime before the 26th of July, while it was assumed to have ended on the 23rd of November based on the last observation of a successful brood. Clutch size was invariably two eggs (N = 21), the incubation period averaged 17.7 ± 1.3 days (N = 9), and the nestling period averaged 16.4 ± 1.3 days (N = 8). We estimated the probability of reproductive success for P. superciliaris to be 41.3%, during this particular breeding season. Of the 12 (57.1%) unsuccessful nests, eight (66.7%) had eggs and four (33.3%) had nestlings when they failed. In nine (42.8%) of these cases, the nests were lost to predation, two to parasitism by botflies, and one due to abandonment. This study suggests that the reproductive success of P. superciliaris is intermediate compared to the other species of Tyrannidae that have been studied and closer to the lower limit of the 40%-80% range which is characteristic of tyrant _ flycatcher species that breed in temperate regions.

RESUMO

The Cerrado is now considered the most threatened biome of South America. Northwestern Minas Gerais state, in southeastern Brazil, still harbors large areas of extreme importance for biological conservation of the Cerrado. The current study provides the first thorough assessment of the avifauna of a large remnant of Cerrado vegetation in this region, the Fazenda Brejão. Data are based on a bird survey conducted from November 1998 to January 2007. This area is a private property of 20.000 ha preserved that lies in a region recognized for its palm groves, a pristine Cerrado (savannah-like vegetation) and gallery forests. Bird censuses were carried out through random transects censuses, mist-net captures and recording bird vocalizations. It was recorded 273 species, belonging to 56 families. This represents 32 percent of all 857 bird species recorded for the Cerrado. Palm groves held approximately 42 percent of all recorded species. We also recorded endemic species of Cerrado as well as adjacent biomes such as the Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga. Regional threatened species were also recorded such as the Greater Rhea Rhea americana, the Chestnut-bellied Guan Penelope ochrogaster, the Bare-faced Curassow Crax fasciolata, the Black-and-white Hawk-eagle Spizastur melanoleucus, the Blue-and-yellow Macaw Ara ararauna, the Yellow-faced Parrot Alipiopsitta xanthops and the Minas Gerais Tyrannulet Phylloscartes roquettei. This species diversity reveals the biological importance of the region. The establishment of a natural reserve in the region will be an essential measure to guarantee the biological conservation of one of the best preserved areas of Cerrado to date in southeastern Brazil.

The present article describes the foraging behavior and diet of Polystictus superciliaris (Wied, 1831), a poorly known species restricted to eastern Brazilian mountains. The work was carried out from April to December 2005 in the Serra do Rola Moça State Park, Nova Lima, Minas Gerais (20°03'S, 44°00'W). For each foraging bout we recorded the attack behavior, attack direction, substrate, height of foraging substrate, and habitat type where the attack occurred. The species diet was determined through direct field observations and by analyzing the stomach contents of 16 individuals. Polystictus superciliaris uses mainly "canga couraçada" (93.3%), and leaves (69.1%) of the most abundant plants of the area as substrate for the capture of preys. The species is generalist in relation to attack behavior. Analysis of stomach contents revealed the exclusive presence of arthropods. Field observations confirmed the exclusive insectivory of P. superciliaris, which was not observed consuming fruits or other vegetable matter.
