INTRODUCTION: Leveraging the nonmonolithic structure of Latin America, which represents a large variability in social determinants of health (SDoH) and high levels of genetic admixture, we aim to evaluate the relative contributions of SDoH and genetic ancestry in predicting dementia prevalence in Latin American populations. METHODS: Community-dwelling participants aged 65 and older (N = 3808) from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Peru completed the 10/66 protocol assessments. Dementia was diagnosed using the cross-culturally validated 10/66 algorithm. Multivariate linear regression models adjusted for SDoH were used in the main analysis. This study used cross-sectional data from the 1066 population-based study. RESULTS: Individuals with higher proportions of Native American (>70%) and African American (>70%) ancestry were more likely to exhibit factors contributing to worse SDoH, such as lower educational levels (p < 0.001), lower socioeconomic status (p < 0.001), and higher frequency of vascular risk factors (p < 0.001). After adjusting for measures of SDoH, there was no association between ancestry proportion and dementia probability, and ancestry proportions no longer significantly accounted for the variance in cognitive performance (African predominant p = 0.31 [-0.19, 0.59] and Native predominant p = 0.74 [-0.24, 0.33]). DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that social and environmental factors play a more crucial role than genetic ancestry in predicting dementia prevalence in Latin American populations. This underscores the need for public health strategies and policies that address these social determinants to effectively reduce dementia risk in these communities. HIGHLIGHTS: Countries in Latin America express a large variability in social determinants of health and levels of admixture. After adjustment for downstream societal factors linked to SDoH, genetic ancestry shows no link to dementia. Population ancestry profiles alone do not influence cognitive performance. SDoH are key drivers of racial disparities in dementia and cognitive performance.

American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) diagnosis is an open question, and the search for a solution is urgent. The available tests that detect the etiological agent of the infection are specific for ATL diagnosis. However, they present disadvantages, such as low sensitivity and the need for invasive procedures to obtain the samples. Immunological methods (leishmanin skin test and search for anti-Leishmania antibodies) are good alternatives to the etiological diagnosis of ATL. Presently, we face problems with disease confirmation due to the discontinuity in the production of leishmanin skin test antigen, particularly in resource-poor settings. Aiming to diagnose ATL, we validated rLb6H-ELISA for IgG antibodies using 1,091 samples from leishmaniasis patients and healthy controls, divided into four panels, living in 19 Brazilian endemic and non-endemic states. The rLb6H-ELISA showed a sensitivity of 98.6% and a specificity of 100.0%, with the reference panel comprising 70 ATL patient samples and 70 healthy controls. The reproducibility evaluation showed a coefficient of variation of positive samples ≤ 8.20% for repeatability, ≤ 17,97% for reproducibility, and ≤ 8.12% for homogeneity. The plates sensitized with rLb6H were stable at 4°C and -20°C for 180 days and 37°C for seven days, indicating 12 months of validity. In samples of ATL patients from five research and healthcare centers in endemic and non-endemic areas, rLb6H-ELISA showed a sensitivity of 84.0%; no significant statistical difference was observed among the five centers (chi-square test, p = 0.13). In samples of healthy controls from four areas with different endemicity, a specificity of 92.4% was obtained; lower specificity was obtained in a visceral leishmaniasis high endemicity locality (chi-square test, p<0.001). Cross-reactivity was assessed in 166 other disease samples with a positivity of 13.9%. Based on the good diagnostic performance and the reproducibility and stability of the antigen, we suggest using ELISA-rLb6H to diagnose ATL.

INTRODUCTION: While Latin America (LatAm) is facing an increasing burden of dementia due to the rapid aging of the population, it remains underrepresented in dementia research, diagnostics, and care. METHODS: In 2023, the Alzheimer's Association hosted its eighth satellite symposium in Mexico, highlighting emerging dementia research, priorities, and challenges within LatAm. RESULTS: Significant initiatives in the region, including intracountry support, showcased their efforts in fostering national and international collaborations; genetic studies unveiled the unique genetic admixture in LatAm; researchers conducting emerging clinical trials discussed ongoing culturally specific interventions; and the urgent need to harmonize practices and studies, improve diagnosis and care, and use affordable biomarkers in the region was highlighted. DISCUSSION: The myriad of topics discussed at the 2023 AAIC satellite symposium highlighted the growing research efforts in LatAm, providing valuable insights into dementia biology, genetics, epidemiology, treatment, and care.

Objectives: This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of clinical and epidemiological data related to Chronic Chagas Cardiomyopathy (CCC) in the Amazon region of Brazil. Methods: A review of observational, retrospective, and cross-sectional studies related to Chagas Disease in the Amazon region of Brazil was conducted, and a case series addressing CCC in patients treated at the FMT-HVD outpatient clinic, a reference center for Chagas disease in Brazil, was carried out. Results: Clinical characteristics of 55 patients from the Amazon region with CCC were described. The most common electrocardiographic alteration observed was abnormal ventricular repolarization (AVR), present in 40% of cases. The most common echocardiographic finding was left ventricular systolic dysfunction (49%), followed by akinesia or hypokinesia of the inferior and/or inferolateral walls (38.1%) and the presence of an apical aneurysm (32.7%). Conclusions: Overall, this study demonstrates that CCC in the Amazon region presents clinical characteristics and severity that are similar to those observed in other regions. However, certain peculiarities, such as the frequency of right bundle branch block (RBBB) and anterior and septal involvement during the acute phase, require additional investigation to better comprehend the disease in the region. Overall, the study provides crucial clinical insights for the diagnosis and treatment of CCC in the Amazon region.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a combination of a single intramuscular (IM) dose of pentamidine (7 mg/kg) followed by oral tamoxifen 40 mg/day for 20 days is non-inferior to three IM doses of pentamidine 7 mg/kg in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis with a margin of 15%. METHODS: Phase II, randomised, controlled, open-label, non-inferiority clinical trial. Primary outcome was the complete healing of the lesions 6 months after starting treatment. Secondary outcomes were healing 3 months after starting treatment and determining the presence and severity of adverse effects (AE). RESULTS: The research was concluded with 49 patients; Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis was the most frequent species isolated. In the primary outcome, 18 (72%) (95% CI: 52.4%-85.7%) of the 25 patients allocated to the intervention group and 24 (100%) (95% CI: 86.2%-100%) of the control group (p = 0.015) met the established criteria of cure. There was no AE with tamoxifen. CONCLUSION: Although a 72% cure rate presented by the combination of tamoxifen and pentamidine was lower than in the control group that achieved a 100% cure, it is still a safe and is a clinically relevant result. It indicates that the therapeutic scheme evaluated may be a promising option for populations in remote areas, however it should be further studied, in order to include a larger number of patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high burden of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias among the Hispanic population worldwide, little is known about how dementia affects healthcare utilizations among this population outside of the US, in particular among those in the Caribbean region. OBJECTIVE: This study examines healthcare utilization associated with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias among older adults in the Caribbean as compared to the US. METHODS: We conducted harmonized analyses of two population-based surveys, the 10/66 Dementia Group Research data collected in Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, and the US-based Health and Retirement Study. We examined changes in hospital nights and physician visits in response to incident and ongoing dementias. RESULTS: Incident dementia significantly increased the risk of hospitalization and number of hospital nights in both populations. Ongoing dementia increased the risk of hospitalization and hospital nights in the US, with imprecise estimates for the Caribbean. The number of physician visits was elevated in the US but not in the Caribbean. CONCLUSIONS: The concentration of increased healthcare utilization on hospital care and among patients with incident dementia suggests an opportunity for improved outpatient management of new and existing dementia patients in the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: intrinsic capacity (IC) is a construct encompassing people's physical and mental abilities. There is an implicit link amongst IC domains: cognition, locomotion, nutrition, sensory and psychological. However, little is known about the integration of the domains. OBJECTIVES: to investigate patterns in the presentation and evolution of IC domain impairments in low-and-middle-income countries and if such patterns were associated with adverse outcomes. METHODS: secondary analyses of the first two waves of the 10/66 study (population-based surveys conducted in eight urban and four rural catchment areas in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico and China). We applied latent transition analysis on IC to find latent statuses (latent clusters) of IC domain impairments. We evaluated the longitudinal association of the latent statuses with the risk of frailty, disability and mortality, and tested concurrent and predictive validity. RESULTS: amongst 14,923 participants included, the four latent statuses were: high IC (43%), low deterioration with impaired locomotion (17%), high deterioration without cognitive impairment (22%), and high deterioration with cognitive impairment (18%). A total of 61% of the participants worsened over time, 35% were stable, and 3% improved to a healthier status.Participants with deteriorated IC had a significantly higher risk of frailty, disability and dementia than people with high IC. There was strong concurrent and predictive validity. (Mortality Hazard Ratio = 4.60, 95%CI 4.16; 5.09; Harrel's C = 0.73 (95%CI 0.72;0.74)). CONCLUSIONS: half of the study population had high IC at baseline, and most participants followed a worsening trend. Four qualitatively different IC statuses or statuses were characterised by low and high levels of deterioration associated with their risk of disability and frailty. Locomotion and cognition impairments showed other trends than psychological and nutrition domains across the latent statuses.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic plantar ulcers in leprosy are lesions resulting from motor and sensory alterations caused by Mycobacterium leprae. They are lesions refractory to conventional dressings and present high recurrence rates. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the epidemiological clinical profile of patients with chronic plantar ulcers associated with bony prominences in the lesion bed and to evaluate the efficacy of orthopedic surgical treatment of these lesions. METHODS: This is a descriptive and analytical retrospective study with the evaluation of medical records of patients undergoing surgical treatment of chronic plantar ulcers from 2008 to 2018. The surgical technique applied consisted of corrective resection of bone prominences and the primary closure of the lesion with bipediculated local flap. RESULTS: 234 patients were submitted to surgery, 55.1% male with an average age of 69.5 years old. Of these, 82.9% were illiterate; and 88.5% with open lesions over 10 years. After surgical treatment, total wound healing occurred in an average time of 12 weeks. The variables that contributed to shorter healing time were: Patients' lower age group; regular use of orthopedic shoes and insoles and dressings performed by nurse aides in health units before surgery. Obesity was the factor that correlated with the delay of healing time. CONCLUSION: A higher incidence was observed in males and male and female illiterate patients. The regular use of shoes and insoles and dressings performed by nurse aides in health units contributed to shorter postoperative healing time. Orthopedic surgical treatment with corrective resection of bony prominences proved to be an efficient therapeutic method for the closure of chronic plantar ulcers. It is a reproducible method, justifying the importance of the orthopedic surgeon in the context of the multidisciplinary team to cope with these complex lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical, epidemiological and management information on cases of acute Chagas disease (ACD) by oral transmission in the state of Amazonas in western Amazon. METHODS: Manual and electronic medical records of patients diagnosed with ACD at the Fundação de Medicina Tropical Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado (FMT-HVD) were included. RESULTS: There were 147 cases of acute CD registered from 10 outbreaks that occurred in the state of Amazonas between 2004 and 2022. The transmission pathway was through oral route, with probable contaminated palm fruit juice (açaí and/or papatuá), and involved people from the same family, friends or neighbours. Of 147 identified cases, 87 (59%) were males; cases were aged 10 months to 82 years. The most common symptom was the febrile syndrome (123/147; 91.8%); cardiac alterations were present in 33/100 (33%), (2/147; 1.4%) had severe ACD with meningoencephalitis, and 12 (8.2%) were asymptomatic. Most cases were diagnosed through thick blood smear (132/147; 89.8%), a few (14/147; 9.5%) were diagnosed by serology and (1/147; 0.7%) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and blood culture. In all these outbreaks, 74.1% of the patients were analysed by PCR, and Trypanosoma cruzi TcIV was detected in all of them. No deaths were recorded. The incidence of these foci coincided with the fruit harvest period in the state of Amazonas. CONCLUSION: The occurrence of ACD outbreaks in the Amazon affected individuals of both sexes, young adults, living in rural and peri-urban areas and related to the consumption of regional foods. Early diagnosis is an important factor in surveillance. There was a low frequency of cardiac alterations. Continuous follow-up of most patients was not carried out due to difficulty in getting to specialised centres; therefore, little is known about post-treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Immunogenicity has emerged as a challenge in the development of vaccines against coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19). Immunogenicity is a determinant of the efficacy and safety of vaccines. This systematic review and associated meta-analysis summarized and characterized the immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Relevant RCTs were systematically sourced from different medical databases in August 2021. The risk ratios and mean differences with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS: Of 2,310 papers, 16 RCTs were eligible for review. These RCTs involved a total of 26,698 participants (15,292 males and 11,231 females). The pooled results showed a significant difference in the geometric mean titer between the vaccinated and control groups in favor of the vaccine group after 1 and 2 months of follow-up, for the young age group (18 - < 55y), and with different doses (P < 0.001). The difference in the older age group (>55y) was insignificant (P = 0.24). The seroconversion rate of spike neutralizing antibodies favored the vaccine groups 1 or 2 months after vaccination (P < 0.001). The seroconversion rate of the vaccine group was significantly different (P < 0.001) from that of the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Vaccination elicits immunogenicity in the follow-up period for all age groups and at low and large doses. Therefore, people should be encouraged to receive vaccines currently being offered. A boost dose has been asserted for the elderly.

Introduction: Human fascioliasis is a plant-borne and water-borne infection caused by the trematodes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. It is one of the main neglected tropical diseases, and infections in humans occur via the ingestion of contaminated water and food. This study reviews all the recorded cases of human fascioliasis in Brazil under different climatic conditions in the national territory. Methodology:A survey of human fascioliasis cases in Brazil was carried out using the Google Scholar, Lilacs and PubMed databases. The climatic variables such as temperature, precipitation, moisture and altitude were obtained from the database of the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET). Results: Between the years 1958 and 2022, sixty-six cases of human fascioliasis were recorded in places with temperature levels between 22 °C to 33 °C, humidity 78% to 86%, precipitation 90 mm to 167 mm, and at an altitude of 16 to 935 meters above sea level. Conclusion: The parasite's ability to adapt to different climatic conditions is observed in Brazil and the number of cases of human fascioliasis in the national territory may be higher due to underreporting related to the difficulty in diagnosing the infection.


Introdução: A fasciolíase humana é uma infecção de origem vegetal e hídrica, causada pelos trematódeos Fasciola hepatica e Fasciola gigantica. É uma das principais doenças tropicais negligenciadas, e as infecções em humanos ocorrem através da ingestão de água e alimentos contaminados. Este estudo revisa todos os casos registrados de fasciolíase humana no Brasil sob diferentes condições climáticas no território nacional. Metodologia: Um levantamento dos casos de fasciolíase humana no Brasil foi realizado nas bases de dados Google Scholar, Lilacs e PubMed. As variáveis climáticas como temperatura, precipitação, umidade e altitude foram obtidas do banco de dados do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET). Resultados: Entre os anos de 1958 e 2022, sessenta e seis casos de fasciolíase humana foram registrados em locais com níveis de temperatura entre 22 °C a 33 °C, umidade de 78% a 86%, precipitação de 90 mm a 167 mm e altitude de 16 a 935 metros acima do nível do mar. Conclusão: A capacidade de adaptação do parasito a diferentes condições climáticas é observada no Brasil e o número de casos de fasciolíase humana no território nacional pode ser maior devido à subnotificação relacionada à dificuldade de diagnóstico da infecção.

Este estudio revisa todos los casos registrados de fascioliasis humana en Brasil bajo diferentes condiciones climáticas en el territorio nacional. Metodología: Se realizó una encuesta de casos de fascioliasis humana en Brasil utilizando las bases de datos Google Scholar, Lilacs y PubMed. Las variables climáticas como temperatura, precipitación, humedad y altitud se obtuvieron de la base de datos del Instituto Nacional de Meteorología (INMET). Resultados: Entre los años 1958 y 2022 se registraron sesenta y seis casos de fascioliasis humana en lugares con temperatura entre 22 °C a 33 °C, humedad entre 78% y 86%, precipitación entre 90 mm y 167 mm y una altitud de 16 a 935 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Introducción: El trasplante renal es uno de los métodos de sustitución de la función renal y tiene como factor de mayor influencia en su supervivencia, la compatibilidad inmunológica del sistema mayor. Objetivos: Definir la supervivencia del trasplante y su relación con el grado de compatibilidad. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo sobre el tiempo de supervivencia con base hospitalaria de los 512 trasplantes en el período comprendido entre los años 1993 y 2010, ambos incluidos con seguimiento y corte al concluir el año 2019. Se empleó el Kaplan Meier para calcular las supervivencias, se utilizó el paquete estadístico Statiscal Package Social Science (Spss) versión 22.0. Resultados: 397 pacientes recibieron riñones cadavéricos al momento del corte, 11,3 por ciento de los injertos estaban funcionando, mientras que para los 115 que recibieron de vivo, el 45,2 por ciento, p=0,000. La mediana de supervivencia para el cadavérico fue de 3,1 años (SD 2,4-3,8) y dentro de ellos los que compartieron tres o más antígenos lograron el doble de sobrevida, p=0,033. Para el de donante vivo, la mediana fue de 16,0 años (SD 9,1-22,9) y dentro de este grupo 104 pacientes que compartían un haplotipo lograron 44,2 por ciento de función, los hermanos que eran idénticos un 66,0 por ciento. Por parentesco los que recibieron riñones de hermanos tienen mejor supervivencias que de padres a hijos, p=0,001. Conclusiones: Se definió que la compatibilidad inmunológica del sistema mayor entre donante y receptor propicia diferencias en la función de los injertos(AU)


Introduction: Renal transplantation is one of the methods of renal function substitution and the main factor influencing survival is the immunological compatibility of the major system. Objectives: To define transplant survival and the relationship with the degree of compatibility. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out on the hospital-based survival time of 512 transplants from 1993 to 2010, including follow-up and the cut at the end of 2019. The Kaplan-Meier estimator was used to calculate the survivals, the statistical package Statistical Package Social Science (Spss) version 22.0 was used. Results: Three hundred ninety seven (397) patients received cadaveric kidneys at the cut, 11.3percent of the grafts were functioning, 115 received living grafts, 45.2percent p=0.000. The median survival for the cadaveric kidneys was 3.1 years (SD 2.4-3.8) and among them those who shared three or more antigens achieved twice the survival, p=0.033. For the living donor, the median was 16.0 years (SD 9.1-22.9) and within this group, 104 patients, sharing a haplotype, achieved 44.2percent function, siblings, who were identical, achieved 66 .0percent. By kinship, those who received kidneys from siblings have better survival than for those who received it from parents, p=0.001. Conclusions: Immunological compatibility of the major system between donor and recipient was defined to favor differences in the function of the grafts(AU)

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is gaining importance in the Brazilian Amazon region as a differential diagnosis of febrile syndrome. The most recent microoutbreak occurred in Ipixuna, in Amazonas state. METHODS: An epidemiological survey was conducted using parasitological and serological tests, and electrocardiographic analysis. RESULTS: The patients belonged to one family and had ingested açaí acquired from Ipixuna. All patients reported fever and initially a thick blood smear test was done to identify Trypanosoma cruzi. Benznidazole treatment was administered to all patients. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of the epidemiological dynamics of Chagas disease allows us to improve control and management measures for this disease.

American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) may present different clinical manifestations, immune and therapeutic responses, depending on the Leishmania species, as well as inoculum size and factors inherent to the affected individual. Thus, the aim of this study was to carry out clinical-therapeutic follow-up of Brazilian patients with ACL caused by different Leishmania species. Between 2015 and 2018, patients with ACL from Amazonas and Pernambuco states (Brazil) were submitted to blood collection before and after treatment. The qPCR technique was used to quantify the parasite load. To identify the Leishmania species, one of the following techniques was employed: a conventional PCR performed from biopsy or blood DNA, followed by sequencing; or Multilocus Enzyme Electrophoresis from Leishmania isolated from biopsy/aspirated lesion. A total of 10.8% (23/213) of the patients included in positive cases were followed-up. All 23 patients were clinically and epidemiologically compatible with ACL and were also positive in parasitological tests (86.96%), molecular tests (73.91%) or both (60.87%). Seventeen samples collected before treatment and 11 collected after treatment were positive in the qPCR assay, with a mean parasite load (MPL) of 38.33 fg/µL and 11.81 fg/µL, respectively. Eight samples were positive in both collections. Thirteen patients (56.52%) were clinically cured (wound healing). Ten patients (43.47%) were not clinically cured at the time of return with the attending physician. Identification of Leishmania species was carried out in samples from nine patients, and six were identified as L. (Viannia) braziliensis, 2 as L (Viannia) guyanensis and 1 as L (Leishmania) amazonensis. One patient infected with L. guyanensis and other with L. braziliensis were not clinically cured and increased the mean parasite load after treatment. The data obtained from the followed-up patients and the relationship between clinical evolution and the infecting species demonstrate the need to understand its etiology to define the effective therapeutic protocol.

BACKGROUND: In fewer than 1% of patients, AD is caused by autosomal dominant mutations in either the presenilin 1 (PSEN1), presenilin 2 (PSEN2), or amyloid precursor protein (APP) genes. The full extent of familial AD and frequency of these variants remains understudied in Latin American (LatAm) countries. Due to the rare nature of these variants, determining the pathogenicity of a novel variant in these genes can be challenging. Here, we use a systematic approach to assign the likelihood of pathogenicity in variants from densely affected families in Latin American populations. METHODS: Clinical data was collected from LatAm families at risk for DIAD. Symptomatic family members were identified and assessed by local clinicians and referred for genetic counseling and testing. To determine the likelihood of pathogenicity among variants of unknown significance from LatAm populations, we report pedigree information, frequency in control populations, in silico predictions, and cell-based models of amyloid-beta ratios. RESULTS: We identified five novel variants in the presenilin1 (PSEN1) gene from Brazilian and Mexican families. The mean age at onset in newly identified families was 43.5 years (range 36-54). PSEN1 p.Val103_Ser104delinsGly, p.Lys395Ile, p.Pro264Se, p.Ala275Thr, and p.Ile414Thr variants have not been reported in PubMed, ClinVar, and have not been reported in dominantly inherited AD (DIAD) families. We found that PSEN1 p.Val103_Ser104delinsGly, p.Lys395Ile, p.Pro264Se, and p.Ala275Thr produce Aß profiles consistent with known AD pathogenic mutations. PSEN1 p.Ile414Thr did not alter Aß in a manner consistent with a known pathogenic mutation. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides further insights into the genetics of AD in LatAm. Based on our findings, including clinical presentation, imaging, genetic, segregations studies, and cell-based analysis, we propose that PSEN1 p.Val103_Ser104delinsGly, p.Lys395Ile, p.Pro264Se, and p.Ala275Thr are likely pathogenic variants resulting in DIAD, whereas PSEN1 p.Ile414Thr is likely a risk factor. This report is a step forward to improving the inclusion/engagement of LatAm families in research. Family discovery is of great relevance for the region, as new initiatives are underway to extend clinical trials and observational studies to families living with DIAD.

A ternary nanocomposite made of nanomaghemite, nanoanatase, and graphene oxide has been successfully synthesized using an inorganic coprecipitation approach, and it has been systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and different spectrocopic techniques (electron energy loss, µ-Raman, and 57Fe Mössbauer) after interaction with an effluent containing Daphnia magna individuals. Specifically, the influence of the nanocomposite over the Daphnia magna carapace, administered in two doses (0.5 mg mL-1 and 1 mg mL-1), has been characterized using µ-Raman spectroscopy before and after laser burning protocols, producing information about the physicochemical interaction with the biomarker. The thermal stability of the nanocomposite was found to be equal to 500 °C, where the nanoanatase and the nanomaghemite phases have respectively conserved their structural identities. The magnetic properties of the nanomaghemite have also been kept unchanged even after the high-temperature experiments and exposure to Daphnia magna. In particular, the size, texture, and structural and morphological properties of the ternary nanocomposite have not shown any significant physicochemical modifications after magnetic decantation recuperation. A significant result is that the graphene oxide reduction was kept even after the ecotoxicological assays. These sets of observations are based on the fact that while the UV-Vis spectrum has confirmed the graphene oxide reduction with a localized peak at 260 nm, the 300-K and 15-K 57Fe Mössbauer spectra have only revealed the presence of stoichiometric maghemite, i.e., the two well-defined static magnetic sextets often found in the bulk ferrimagnetic counterpart phase. The Mössbauer results have also agreed with the trivalent-like valence state of Fe ions, as also suggested by electron energy loss spectroscopy data. Thus, the ternary nanocomposite does not substantially affect the Daphnia magna, and it can be easily recovered using an ordinary magnetic decantation protocol due to the ferrimagnetic-like character of the nanomaghemite phase. Consequently, it shows remarkable physicochemical properties for further reuse, such as cleaning by polluted effluents, at least where Daphnia magna species are present.
