RESUMO

Two new species of the Pelidnota liturella species group are described from Brazil, Pelidnota everardoi sp. nov. and P. luciae sp. nov. The new species are included on the Pelidnota key proposed previously in the literature and an identification key is provided for the Pelidnota liturella species group. Diagnostic characters of the new species, illustrations of male genitalia, and photographs of type material are provided. Furthermore, notes about the Pelidnota liturella species group distribution and new Brazilian state records for two species are also provided: P. flavovittata (Perty, 1830) from Goiás, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo; and P. liturella liturella (Kirby, 1819) from Ceará. Finally, distributional maps for all the P. liturella species group are provided.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Scarabeoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) present more than 2000 species recorded from all over Brazil. They have been scarcely recorded from caves, and truly troglobitic species are yet to be found in the country. In this study, we carried out a review of all existing scarab beetles deposited until 2017 in the Coleção de Invertebrados Subterrâneos de Lavras (ISLA), at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) (Minas Gerais, Brazil), one of the most important collections of subterranean invertebrates in South America. Ninety-two individuals belonging to 52 species were recorded, distributed in six families (Cetoniidae, Hybosoridae, Melolonthidae, Passalidae, Scarabaeidae and Trogidae). Scarabaeidae was the most diverse of them, representing more than 50% of the total of species recorded. We found Scarabeoidea beetles in 51 of the ~ 1600 caves examined, distributed in nine Brazilian states: Alagoas, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Pará, Piauí, and Tocantins. Our results provide evidence that Scarabaeoidea beetles are not frequent in Brazilian caves, and their records in this kind of environment are mostly accidental. Exceptions include Trogidae and Aphodiinae species, which may be associated with bat guano. Our study presents the first list of Scarabaeoidea species sampled in Brazilian caves.

RESUMO

Gibboryctes Endrödi, 1974 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Oryctini) is an uncommon Neotropical genus comprising five valid species (Gasca-Álvarez Ratcliffe 2011; Dupuis 2019). Endrödi (1974) established the genus based on Gibboryctes szelenyii Endrödi, 1974 and defined it by the absence of sexual dimorphism; short, triangular, and pointed clypeus; bidentate mandibles projected beyond the anterior clypeal margin; and protibiae quadridentate. After that, Gibboryctes waldenfelsi (Endrödi, 1977) and Gibboryctes gracilicornis (Prell, 1912) were assigned to Gibboryctes, from Strategus Kirby, 1828 and Heterogomphus Burmeister, 1847, respectively (Ratcliffe Dechambre 1983; Dupuis Dechambre 2008). Gibboryctes bollei Dechambre, 2006 and Gibboryctes impunctatus Dupuis, 2019 were subsequently described.

RESUMO

Two new Podischnus Burmeister, 1847 species are described here: Podischnus limeirai sp. nov. from Gurupi region, Maranhão state, Brazil, the easternmost distribution of the genus; and Podischnus cleidecostae sp. nov. from the Acre state, Western of Brazilian Amazon Forest. New diagnostic characters are illustrated and discussed for the genus. An illustrated identification key for all Podischnus species, and an up-to-date distribution map for the Brazilian species of Podischnus are provided. Moreover, we propose the inclusion of P. limeirai sp. nov. in the Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN) due to the fast loss of the Oriental Amazon Forest remnant fragment in that region.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Hexapods, commonly known as insects, are a neglected taxonomic group in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, with unanswered questions about their species richness and the ecological processes in which they are involved (e.g., colonization, introduction, establishment, and extinction). Herein, we provide an updated Hexapod checklist with current nomenclatural combinations. The entomofauna of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago is currently composed of 453 species in 21 orders. The orders, and their respective number of species, are: Blattaria (9), Coleoptera (118), Collembola (29), Dermaptera (3), Diplura (1), Diptera (134), Embioptera (1), Hemiptera (29), Hymenoptera (59), Isoptera (2), Lepidoptera (25), Mantodea (1), Neuroptera (3), Odonata (5), Orthoptera (11), Phasmatodea (1), Phthiraptera (6), Psocoptera (3), Siphonaptera (1), Thysanoptera (10), and Zygentoma (2). The archipelago has 263 new taxon records (family + genera + species). Thirty-eight species (3.39%) were described from local specimens and most of them are likely endemic species. This study more than doubles our knowledge (from the previous 190 records) of the entomofauna in this large Brazilian archipelago. This study also provides a baseline for studies on its conservation status and for implementing future environmental management programs.
