RESUMO
The aim of the present investigation is to evaluate the influence of the powder size of Cr3C2-25NiCr spraying powder on the fatigue behavior of HVOF-sprayed coating on the ASTM A516 steel substrate. Conventional commercial Cr3C2-25NiCr spraying powder was previously treated through high-energy milling. The crystallite sizes of milled powders were measured by X-ray diffraction and transmission electronic microscopy. Three different powder formats of the same Cr3C2-25NiCr composite were subjected to HVOF spraying to produce (i) a Milled-Coating (from high-energy milled spray powder), (ii) an Original-Coating (from conventional commercial spray powder), and (iii) a 50%-50% mixture of both (Milled + Original-Coating). The same spraying conditions were adopted for all the assessed cases. The sprayed coatings were investigated through the Knoop hardness test and SEM-EDS analysis. In addition, 3-point bending fatigue tests were conducted at different stress levels up to 107 cycles. The coating morphology and roughness effects on fatigue behavior were analyzed. The Cr3C2-25NiCr milled coating presented a lower fatigue life above the fatigue limit and a higher fatigue limit than other coatings; this outcome could be attributed to its lower surface roughness and finer grain size microstructure.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: This in-vitro study evaluated the color changes in enamel and dentin bleached in the presence of an orthodontic bracket, as well as the heterogeneity of the color and contribution of each tissue to the color change (CTCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enamel-dentin specimens from extracted bovine teeth were bleached before or after bracket removal or maintained without any treatment (control). The colors of the dentin and enamel were measured individually and after recombining these substrates. The changes in the color (ΔE00 ) and whitening index (ΔWID) were estimated by the color difference between the bleached specimens and those of the control. The CTCC was also calculated by recombining the tissues from different treatments. Images of specimens obtained from a stereomicroscope were used to analyze the color homogeneity within each tissue. RESULTS: The highest values of ΔE00 and ΔWID were observed in the specimens bleached in the absence of a bracket. Bleaching in the presence of a bracket resulted in enamel with a center that was whiter than the periphery. Dentin and enamel presented similar CTCC values. CONCLUSIONS: Tooth bleaching performed in the presence of a metallic bracket resulted in a reduced bleaching effect and increased color heterogeneity within both tissues. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Tooth bleaching before the orthodontic bracket removal reduces the bleaching effect in both dentin and enamel. Moreover, a heterogeneous color of enamel surface can be observed after tooth bleaching in the presence of a nickel-free metallic orthodontic bracket.

This study assessed the bond strength of a resin cement when Immediate Sealed Dentin (ISD) was contaminated by different temporary cements applying a microshear test. Forty-eight fragments of third molar crowns were mounted in acrylic resin and worn until the dentin was exposed. The substrates were sealed with a 3-step conventional adhesive system and divided into four groups (n=12): Control (without temporary cement) and three groups that used different temporary cements - Provy, RelyX Temp NE, and Provitemp. The temporary cements were removed after 7 days of storage. Resin cement RelyX ARC was applied to the contaminated substrates. Microshear bond strength was evaluated using a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min). Data was analyzed with ANOVA and a Dunnett post-hoc test (p<0.05). Additionally, three samples from each group were prepared for scanning electron microscope analysis. Means and standard deviations of microshear bond strength (MPa) were 17.96±1.65, 16.70±1.43, 20.43±1.30 and 33.75±4.72 for Control, Provy, RelyX Temp, and Provitemp, respectively. Statistically significant difference was observed between the Control and Provitemp samples (p=0.0002). Adhesive failures were dominant (50%), followed by cohesive failures with cement (26%), and cohesive failures with dentin (24%). Residues of Provy and Provitemp were observed on the sealed dentin. Provitemp temporary cement sealing increased the microshear bond strength of the resin cement on dentin treated with IDS.

Background: The study of the phenomenon of fatigue is essential because implant failures usually are caused by this process. Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the fatigue resistance of straight and anatomical abutments joints that were submitted to cyclic loads. Material and method: We used 37 Morse taper implants and 37 abutments, divided into two groups (n= 16: straight abutment, n= 21 anatomical abutment). The sets were submitted to cyclic loading (5 million) using servo-hydraulic equipment. Three sets from each group were subjected to bending tests to determine the maximum load resistance, which served as the parameter for comparison of the cyclic tests. We evaluated number of cycles, load and bending moment. Result: Of the 31 abutments cyclically tested, 17 (54.8%) fractured in fewer than 5 million cycles; 8 (25.8%) of these were straight abutments, and 9 (29%) were anatomical. A total of 14 samples (45.2%) resisted the cyclic loading. According to Fisher's exact test, there was no difference between groups as the fracture. Conclusion: Despite of the straight abutments have higher average load and bending moment on the anatomical, both types of abutments showed similar performance as the fracture strength in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated removal of a force-closed stem, done in order to improve acetabular exposure during revision, with reinsertion afterwards. It is unknown how much this procedure modifies the stem/cement interface. METHODS: Three tapered stem models were implanted into composite femurs. Strain gauges were embedded in the medial aspect of the cement mantle and in several positions on the outer surface of the femurs. The deformation was measured during static loading, which was applied at two different times: after implantation and after one million loading cycles, followed by stem removal and reinsertion. The t test was performed. The differences in deformation were compared (at p ≤ 0.05) between the two static loading times and among the three stem designs. RESULTS: No significant differences in deformation were found after the two loading times for the three models. No significant differences in the initial deformations of the three models were found for most of the gauges attached to the femurs. CONCLUSIONS: Reinsertion of the force-closed stem does not alter the load transmission from the stem to the cement and to the surface of the femur, even after one million loading cycles.

Subtle differences in stem design can result in different mechanical responses of the total hip arthroplasty. Tests measuring migration of the stem relative to the femur, as well as the strains in the cement mantle and on the femur can detect different mechanical behavior between stems. Methods: In this article, conical, double and triple tapered stems were implanted in composite femurs and subjected to static and cyclic loads. Stems differed mainly on taper angle, calcar radius and proximal stiffness. Stem migration and strains on the femur and in the cement mantle were achieved. Results: Significant differences (p < 0.05) were noted in the permanent rotation between double and triple tapers, in the strains on the proximal medial femur between triple and both conical and double tapers, and in the strains on the lateral proximal femur between double tapers and both conical and triple tapers. Conclusion: The proposed mechanical tests were able to detect significant differences in the behavior of these resembling stems. Stem proximal stiffness and the calcar radius of the stem influence its rotational stability and the strain transmission to the femur.

Introduction: The dual-cure resin cement is the main material for luting of ceramic. However, factors such as light source can influence the performance of the cement. Objective: Evaluate the influence of two light sources of different intensities on the microhardness of a resin cement when cured under different ceramics. Material and method: Forty samples of dual resin cement were photoactivated by two LED light sources, with light intensity of 1000mW/cm² and 800mW/cm², respectively (40 seconds), under the base ceramic Zirconia, Spinel MgAl2O4 and Lithium Disilicate. In the control group, a glass plate was used. Each samples had the surface grounded (600 and 1200). After dry storage in the dark (24 hours), Vickers microhardness measurements were performed (HMV Shimadzu - 50gf/10 seconds). The data were submitted to factorial ANOVA and Tukey's test with significance level of 5%. Result: The average hardness and standard deviation in the control group for cement polymerized 1000mW/cm² was 43.9±1.5 and 800mW/cm² the value of 43.4±1.3. The lowest value was for the Ceramic base of spinel MgAl2O4, light cured with 800mW/cm² with a value of 34.3±3.3. Conclusion: The ceramic type and intensity of the light source influence the hardness of the cement. The polymerization 1000mW/cm2 on the ceramic based on zirconia and spinel MgA2O4 resulted in the best combination of hardness cement.

RESUMO
OBJECTIVES: Extensively destroyed teeth are commonly restored with composite resin before cavity preparation for indirect restorations. The longevity of the restoration can be related to the proper bonding of the resin cement to the composite. This study aimed to evaluate the microshear bond strength of two self-adhesive resin cements to composite resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: COMPOSITE DISCS WERE SUBJECT TO ONE OF SIX DIFFERENT SURFACE PRETREATMENTS: none (control), 35% phosphoric acid etching for 30 seconds (PA), application of silane (silane), PA + silane, PA + adhesive, or PA + silane + adhesive (n = 6). A silicone mold containing a cylindrical orifice (1 mm(2) diameter) was placed over the composite resin. RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE) or BisCem (Bisco Inc.) self-adhesive resin cement was inserted into the orifices and light-cured. Self-adhesive cement cylinders were submitted to shear loading. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Independent of the cement used, the PA + Silane + Adhesive group showed higher microshear bond strength than those of the PA and PA + Silane groups. There was no difference among the other treatments. Unicem presented higher bond strength than BisCem for all experimental conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Pretreatments of the composite resin surface might have an effect on the bond strength of self-adhesive resin cements to this substrate.
RESUMO
This study examined the effect of deproteinization on the bond strength between self-adhesive resin cements and dentin surfaces that were untreated (control), acid-etched, or acid-etched and subjected to a post-etch deproteinization treatment. Cylinders of RelyX Unicem or BisCem (n = 6) cement were build-up on the dentin surfaces and tested to determine shear strength. The results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). While neither dentin pretreatment improved the bond strength for RelyX Unicem, deproteinization treatments resulted in greater bond strength in BisCem specimens while acid etching alone did not improve the performance of the material.

An evaluation of transient and stabilized strains in the cement mantle during polymerization was carried out in simplified cemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) model. A mathematical approach combined with a simple finite element simulation was used to compare measured and calculated stabilized strain values and to provide the Von Mises stresses at the stem/cement interface due to shrinkage related to temperature decrease after exothermal reaction. A second similar model was carried out to measure stem/cement/mold interfacial shear strength and dimensional changes of the cement mantle to obtain total shrinkage due to temperature decrease plus cement polymerization. The results indicated that positive strain peaks found during the exothermic stage of polymerization have the potential to produce pre-loading cracking. After the initial expansion, it was observed a progressive strain decrease pattern down to stabilized values that takes place near 2h after the cementation. Even though there is a great deal of dispersion in the measured stabilized strain values, in average those values match quite well with the numerical simulations, indicating 4,7 MPa von Mises interfacial stress due to thermal shrinkage. The total cement shrinkage leads to a negative radial stress of 11 MPa and 14 MPa von Mises interfacial stress. Finally, total shrinkage has the potential to enhance gaps in the cement/mold interface.

Introduction: Despite the importance of the acid etching step on bonding procedures, little is known about the acid etchant brand effect on bond strength of adhesive to dentin. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different acid etchants at the bond strength of composite resin to dentine. Material and Method: Twenty five bovine incisors had their crown sectioned in two hemi-sections. The buccal surfaces were grounded with #180 silicon carbide (SiC) abrasive paper to exposure of dentin, followed by #600 SiC paper to standardize the smear layer. The samples were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 10) according to acid etchant brands: 3M ESPE, Ultradent, Dentsply, Villevie and DFL.Only a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system (Ambar, FGM) was used. Silicon molds were used to build-up three resin composite cylinder per sample. After 24 hours, cylinders were submitted to shear load until the failure. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and Tukey`s test (α = 0,05). The failure mode was evaluated under optical microscopy and the data were submitted to Chi-square test (α = 0,05). Result: There was no statistical difference on bond strength obtained between the acid etchants evaluated. There was predominance of adhesive failures, except for etchants of Dentsply and DFL that showed similarity between mixed and adhesive failures. Conclusion: Different brands of acid etchants did not influence on the bond strength of composite resin to dentin.
