Dr. Raquel Pérez González, better known among colleagues, students and co-workers as "professor Raquel", obtained her degree in Medicine in 1976. She began her Radiology residency directly and obtained the title of first-class specialist degree in 1979. Thus, the Central Military Hospital "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay" is the cradle of her professional training and in later years, in her home where she saw her grow up, especially as a teacher to numerous generations of radiologists and imaging scientists. Today, part of her ashes rest in the garden of the Imaging Department, guarded by the love that she was able to cultivate. In 2016, a 60-year-old female patient attended the gastroenterology clinic with diffuse abdominal pain. The simple, anteroposterior abdominal x-ray, in the lying position, showed a "crab claw" image, visible when breathing into the left transverse hemicolon, as contrast, which partially borders on that side, a soft tissue opacity, which extends from the mesogastrium to the right iliac fossa, where the meniscus sign is observed. The imaging studies performed showed typical radiological signs of invagination due to malignant tumor. On several occasions, Professor Raquel used the image of this case as a question in resident promotion exams. The publication of this case constitutes a tribute to someone who will always be a paradigm of a teacher.

RESUMO

Despite general declines in coral reef ecosystems in the tropical western Atlantic, some reefs, including mesophotic reefs (30-150 m), are hypothesized to function as coral refugia due to their relative isolation from anthropogenic stressors. Understanding the connectivity dynamics among these putative refugia and more degraded reefs is critical to develop effective management strategies that promote coral metapopulation persistence and recovery. This study presents a geographically broad assessment of shallow (<30 m) and mesophotic (>30 m) connectivity dynamics of the depth-generalist coral species Montastraea cavernosa. Over 750 coral genets were collected across the Northwest and Southern Gulf of Mexico, Florida, Cuba, and Belize, and ~5000 SNP loci were generated to quantify high-resolution genetic structure and connectivity among these populations. Generally, shallow and mesophotic populations demonstrated higher connectivity to distant populations within the same depth zone than to adjacent populations across depth zones. However, exceptions to this pattern include the Northwest Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Keys which exhibited relatively high vertical genetic connectivity. Furthermore, estimates of recent gene flow emphasize that mesophotic M. cavernosa populations are not significant sources for their local shallow counterparts, except for the Northwest Gulf of Mexico populations. Location-based differences in vertical connectivity are likely a result of diverse oceanographic and environmental conditions that may drive variation in gene flow and depth-dependent selection. These results highlight the need to evaluate connectivity dynamics and refugia potential of mesophotic coral species on a population-by-population basis and to identify stepping-stone populations that warrant incorporation in future international management approaches.

RESUMO

The synthesis of a new family of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) core dimers and G0 dendrimers end-capped with two and four ß-cyclodextrin (ßCD) moieties was performed by click-chemistry conjugation, varying the spacers attached to the core. The structure analyses were achieved in DMSO-d6 and the self-inclusion process was studied in D2O by 1H-NMR spectroscopy for all platforms. It was demonstrated that the interaction with adamantane carboxylic acid (AdCOOH) results in a guest-induced shift of the self-inclusion effect, demonstrating the full host ability of the ßCD units in these new platforms without any influence of the spacer. The results of the quantitative size and water solubility measurements demonstrated the equivalence between the novel EDTA-ßCD platforms and the classical PAMAM-ßCD dendrimer. Finally, we determined the toxicity for all EDTA-ßCD platforms in four different cell lines: two human breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231), human cervical adenocarcinoma cancer cells (HeLa), and human lung adenocarcinoma cells (SK-LU-1). The new EDTA-ßCD carriers did not present any cytotoxicity in the tested cell lines, which showed that these new classes of platforms are promising candidates for drug delivery.

RESUMO

In this study, we synthesized and characterized pH-responsive Chitosan-AgCl-doped ZnO hybrid hydrogels and evaluated their potential for loading aquaculture bioactive compounds, and assessed their antimicrobial properties against a threatening pathogen associated with disease across a broad spectrum of warm water fish and invertebrates. Hydrogel characterization consisted of assessing morphology via SEM, composition via EDS, hydrogels' network components interactions via FT-IR and pH response through swelling behavior determinations. The swelling characterization of the synthesized hydrogels demonstrated a pH-responsive behavior, showing that low pH values caused the hydrogel polymeric network to expand and capture more of the aqueous solution. These characteristics make the synthesized hydrogels suitable for the encapsulation and controlled release of drugs and bioactive compounds in aquaculture. Chitosan_ZnO hybrid hydrogels showed great antimicrobial activity against Vibrio harveyi, even better than that of loaded PB hydrogels. Here, we provide evidence for the potential capacity of Chitosan_ZnO hybrid hydrogels for the preventive and curative treatment of diseases that impact aquaculture animal health and prevent drug resistance by bacteria.

RESUMO

Background: The long-time study of coral reefs with low human impacts can provide information on the effects of regional pressures like climate change, and is an opportunity to document how these pressures are reflected in coral communities. An example of minimal local anthropogenic impacts are the Guanahacabibes coral reefs, located in the westernmost region of Cuba. The objectives of this study were: to evaluate the temporal variability of six benthic biological indicators of coral reefs, and to explore the possible relationship between predictive abiotic variables and biological response variables. Methods: Four coral reef sites were sampled between 2008 and 2017, to analyze biological indicators (living coral cover, fleshy algae index, coral species richness, coral species abundance, coral trait groups species abundance, Functional Reef Index). Seven abiotic variables (wave exposure, sea surface temperature, degree heating week, chlorophyll-a concentration, particulate organic carbon, photosynthetically available radiation, and the diffuse attenuation coefficient) were compiled between 2007 and 2016, from remote sensing datasets, to analyze their relationship with the biological indicators. Permanova statistical analysis was used to evaluate trends in biological variables between sites and years, and Routine Analysis Based on Linear Distances (DISTLM) was used to explore some dependencies between biotic and abiotic variables. Results: We found significant variability in the temporal analysis, with a decrease in living coral cover, a decline in the predominance of the branching and massive framework reef-building species, a decline in Orbicella species abundance, and an increase in the fleshy algae index. Some abiotic variables (average of degree heating weeks, standard deviation of the diffuse attenuation coefficient, average of the sea surface temperature, among others) significantly explained the variability of biological indicators; however, determination coefficients were low. Conclusions: Certain decrease in the functionality of the coral reef was appreciated, taking into account the predominance of secondary and nom-massive framework reef-building species in the last years. A weak association between abiotic and biological variables was found in the temporal analysis. The current scenario of the condition of the coral reefs seems to be regulated by the global effects of climate change, weakly associated effects, and in longer terms.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was molecular identification of bovine leukemia virus and possible co-infection with bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) viral agents in Mexican dairy herds. We collected 533 blood samples from cattle vaccinated against the BRDC virus in 9 states across Mexico. Peripheral blood leukocytes were removed and genetic material was extracted to detect bovine leukemia virus (BLV), bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), bovine parainfluenza virus 3 (BPIV-3), and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) infection using polymerase chain reaction. We identified high BLV infection rates in 270 cattle (50.65%). One hundred and thirty-three cows (24.95%) tested positive for BoHV-1, of which 65 samples were positive for both viruses (BoHV-1 and BLV) and 68 were only positive for BoHV-1. Only 4 samples tested positive for BPIV-3 and no sample was positive for BVDV or BRSV. Relative risk and odds ratio analyses did not identify that the presence of BLV infection favors BoHV-1 co-infection in vaccinated herds.

The goal of this study was to analyze the genetic expression of antiretroviral restriction factors (ARF) and acute phase proteins (APP), as well as their correlation with proviral and viral loads in cattle with aleukemic (AL) and persistent lymphocytosis (PL). Complete blood samples were collected from a herd of dairy cows, and we extracted genetic material from peripheral blood leukocytes. Absolute quantification of the expression of ARF (APOBEC-Z1, Z2, and Z3; HEXIM-1, HEXIM-2, and BST2) and APP (haptoglobin (HP), and serum amyloid A (SAA)) was performed by qPCR. Statistical significance was observed in the expression of APOBEC-Z3 in BLV-infected animals. We only found positive correlations with a strong expression of the ARF genes in the AL group. The participation of APOBEC (Z1 and Z3), HEXIM-1, and HEXIM-2 was more frequently identified in BLV-infected animals. HEXIM-2 showed active gene expression in the AL group. Although the expression of ARF in early stages of infection (AL) maintains an important participation, in late stages (PL) it seems to have little relevance.

RESUMO

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback (rt-fMRI-nf) training is an emerging intervention for neurorehabilitation. However, its translation into clinical use on participants with clinical depression is unclear, the effect estimates from randomized control trials and the certainty of the supporting evidence on the effect estimates are unknown. As the number of studies on neurofeedback increases every year, and better quality evidence becomes available, we evaluate the evidence of all randomized control trials available on the clinical application of rt-fMRI-nf training on participants with clinical depression. We performed electronic searches in Pubmed, Embase, CENTRAL, rtFIN database, Epistemonikos, trial registers, reference lists, other systematic reviews, conference abstracts, and cross-citation in Google Scholar. Reviewers independently selected studies, extracted data and evaluated the risk of bias. The certainty of the evidence was judged using the GRADE framework. This review complies with PRISMA guidelines and was submitted to PROSPERO registration. We found 435 results. After the selection process, we included 11 reports corresponding to four RCTs. The effect of rt-fMRI-nf on improving the severity of clinical depression scores demonstrated a tendency to favor the intervention; however, the general effect was not significant. At end of treatment, SMD (standardized mean difference): -0.32 (95% CI -0.73 to 0.10). At follow-up, SMD: -0.33 (95% CI -0.91, 1.25). All the studies showed changes in BOLD fMRI activation after training; however, only one study confirmed regulation success during a transfer run. Whole-brain analyses suggests that rt-fMRI nf may alter activity patterns in brain networks. More studies are needed to evaluate quality of life, acceptability, adverse effects, cognitive tasks, and physiology measures. We conclude that the current evidence on the effect of rt-fMRI-nf training for decision-making outcomes in patients with clinical depression is still based on low certainty of the evidence.

RESUMO

In this work, two dendritic molecules containing an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) core decorated with two and four ß-cyclodextrin (ßCD) units were synthesized and fully characterized. Copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) click chemistry under microwave irradiation was used to obtain the target compounds with yields up to 99%. The classical ethylenediamine (EDA) core present in PAMAM dendrimers was replaced by an EDTA core, obtaining platforms that increase the water solubility at least 80 times compared with native ßCD. The synthetic methodology presented here represents a convenient alternative for the rapid and efficient construction of PAMAM analogs. These molecules are envisaged for future applications as drug carriers.

RESUMO

A sensitive and efficient analytical process for detecting lamotrigine in acidic solution based in ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (UPLC-DAD) was developed; the stationary phase used was a C8, 150 × 4.6 mm, 2.6 µm. The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile/acidified water (0.01% H3PO4 and 0.005% triethylamine, pH 2.4) (25 : 75 v/v). Limits of detection and quantification were 0.02 µg/mL and 0.05 µg/mL, respectively. The working interval for the evaluation of the method ranged from 0.05 to 12 µg/mL, and the linear fit of the experimental data has a value of r2≥0.98. Before quantifying lamotrigine in plasma of patients with bipolar disorder, lamotrigine was released from plasma proteins with a 0.2 M sodium hydroxide solution, and then proteins were removed by precipitation with acetonitrile. Afterward, the lamotrigine base was dissolved in ethyl acetate. This extract was reconstituted in potassium phosphate solution (pH 2.4) to obtain more than 98% of lamotrigine protonated in N2, which was detected and quantified as indicated above. The absolute percentage of lamotrigine recovery is ≥80% for all tested concentration levels. The accuracy and precision of the method have %CV values <4% for the lamotrigine levels of 3, 6, and 9 µg/mL. The correlation coefficient for the used concentration range is 0.99. The analytical method is precise and sensitive to measure lamotrigine levels expected in plasma of BD patients and these levels were in the therapeutic dose range.

ABSTRACT The incidence of gynecological epithelial tumors and their diagnosis in advanced stages cause physical damage, impact on reproductive health and produce psychological effects in women. Reducing the time of its detection constitutes a great challenge for public health. The knowledge and validation of various enzymatic study methods, applied to tumor pathology, will allow the integration of each result into the network of reactions, molecular and cellular recognition mechanisms, as well as signaling pathways, useful for understanding the disease and its diagnostic and therapeutic mechanisms. The determination of the activity of metallo-oxidoreductases enzymes in serum is an attempt to implement liquid biomarkers for the early diagnosis and prognosis of gynecological tumors. The aim of the research is the compilation of updated information about enzyme biomarkers for the prediction, diagnosis and follow-up of gynecological epithelial tumors.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of central pars plana vitrectomy + phacoemulsification + intraocular lens implantation in patients with small eyes, cataract, and narrow chambers. METHODS: This prospective study was carried out in 89 eyes of 58 patients undergoing central pars plana vitrectomy + phacoemulsification + IOL implantation in small eyes with cataract at Clínica La Luz Eye Institute in Lima, Peru. RESULTS: The mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.8±0.6 preoperatively, 0.5±0.6 at 1 month, 0.3±0.3 at 6 months, 0.1±0.1 at 9 months, and 0.05±0.1 at 1 year, which was statistically significant from the preoperative period to 1 year of follow-up. Mean intraocular pressure was 22.09±2.4 mmHg preoperatively, 14.55±2.9 mmHg at 1 day, 12.94±2.04 mmHg at 1 month, 12.01±1.2 mmHg at 6 months, 12.20±1.9 mmHg at 9 months, and 11.34±1.1 mmHg at 1 year. The reduction in the intraocular pressure from the preoperative control period to the follow-up at 1 year was statistically significant. There was only one complication, a rupture of the posterior capsule, which was quickly resolved. CONCLUSION: Central pars plana vitrectomy with phacoemulsification is a safe and effective technique to perform in narrow chambers with all types of cataracts, in experienced hands, which can avoid intraoperative complications.

The new information and communication technologies add progressive changes in the current teaching system, as long as the influence of technological innovation fosters new ways of conceiving learning. For this reason, conceptions, processes and paradigms of the teaching-educational activity have gradually migrated from the traditional to the techno-pedagogical model. Based on this, the objective was to expose the aspects related to learning, the different theories that support it and the most significant elements related to learning and learning networks. The study used the contrast between theoretical methods, such as the historical-logical, as well as theoretical systematization for gathering information, construction, the development and the final structuring of the product. The results were focused on updating the theoretical knowledge of learning and the new information and communication technologies, in order to encourage the research community to deepen on the subject. The new information and communication technologies give learning a more autonomous character, and increase, in turn, its social character, due to the continuous development in the Web, in social networks and in virtual learning environments and communities in the Internet. In turn, connectivism has made it possible to establish new ways of conceiving education, by adequately articulating the technological with the pedagogical, through a process of continuous training for the professor regarding issues of technology applied to education(AU)

RESUMO

The conformational study of dendritic platforms containing multiple ß-cyclodextrin (ßCD) units in the periphery is relevant to determine the availability of ßCD cavities for the formation of inclusion complexes in aqueous biological systems. In this work, we performed a detailed conformational analysis in D2O, via 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy of a novel class of phosphorus dendritic compounds of the type P3N3-[O-C6H4-O-(CH2)n-ßCD]6 (where n = 3 or 4). We unambiguously demonstrated that a functionalized glucopyranose unit of at least one ßCD unit undergoes a 360° tumbling process, resulting in a deep inclusion of the spacer that binds the cyclodextrin to the phosphorus core inside the cavity, consequently limiting the availability of the inner cavities. In addition, we confirmed through NMR titrations that this tumbling phenomenon can be reversed for all ßCD host units using a high-affinity guest, namely 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid (AdCOOH). Our findings have demonstrated that it is possible to create a wide variety of multi-functional dendritic platforms.
