Pesticides used in rice cultivation can cause negative health effects to non-target organisms representative of natural biodiversity. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of pesticides in surface waters from a river that flows in the middle of a rice farming-dominated area. We were also interested in evaluate biochemical and histological effects caused by exposure (16 d) to the lower and higher concentrations of the main found herbicide (bentazone, BTZ), insecticide (chlorantraniliprole, CTP) and fungicide (tebuconazole, TBZ), isolated or mixed, in Boana faber tadpoles. No significant differences were observed in the development of the animals. Tadpoles exposed to the herbicide BTZ showed higher hepatic levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). In animals exposed to CTP, MDA levels were lower than controls. Animals exposed to the fungicide TBZ showed higher hepatic activity of glutathione S-transferase and carboxylesterase (CbE), as well as higher levels of carbonyl proteins and MDA. Animals exposed to Mix showed higher activity in CbE and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in the liver, as well as higher levels of MDA. In the brain and muscle of tadpoles exposed to Mix, acetylcholinesterase activity was higher. Histological changes were also observed in pesticide-exposed animals, such as increased occurrence of melanomacrophages, inflammatory infiltrates and congestion. Our data evidences the contamination of natural aquatic environments by rice pesticides, and the adverse effects of main ones in B. faber tadpoles, which suggests the contribution of pesticides derived from rice cultivation to the degradation of local biodiversity health.

Snakes represent the richest Reptile group in Brazil, amounting to 412 species and 40% of them are endemic for the country. This great richness combined with the poor taxonomic knowledge makes the identification a difficult process. To correctly identify a specimen, guides, taxonomic revisions, identification keys, and consulting specialists are the most used methods. Identification keys are based on separation and segregation of characters, where the chosen paths lead to the appropriate taxa. These tools are normally used by students and non-taxonomists. Also, they can be very helpful with the general public, where they can identify the species with simple characters. This study aims to develop keys for the snakes from the State of Santa Catarina state, Brazil, focusing on the Itajaí Valley species. We surveyed 351 specimens deposited in Universidade Regional de Blumenau Zoological Collection (CZFURB), Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (CHUFSC), and Natural History Museum of Capão da Imbuia (MHNCI) herpetological collections. Characters including pholidosis, dentition, and coloration patterns were examined from the 46 snake species registered from Itajaí Valley.(AU)

A análise da alimentação da pirapitinga do sul (Brycon opalinus), peixe ameaçado de extinção de rios da Mata Atlântica da Serra do Mar na região Sudeste, revelou a ocorrência de itens alimentares incomuns. As espécies deste gênero são onívoras oportunistas e alimentam-se de itens vegetais e animais, tais como: flores, folhas, frutos e sementes e grande variedade de insetos. Em três rios do Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar - Núcleo Santa Virgínia foram encontrados exemplares de B. opalinus que consumiram três itens animais incomuns, os anfíbios Hypsiboas aff. pardalis (Anura, Hylidae) e Eleutherodactylus guentheri (Anura, Leptodactylidae) e o mamífero Oligoryzomys cf. nigripes (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae). O registro do consumo destas espécies de vertebrados foi relacionado com o período de chuvas, quando o material animal ou vegetal carreado até o rio pode ser consumido por B. opalinus, mesmo que não sejam itens habituais para a espécie. A mata ripária preservada, como foi verificado nos três rios do Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar - Núcleo Santa Virgínia (SP), é de suma importância para o fornecimento de itens alimentares animais e vegetais e pela manutenção das condições bióticas e abióticas para a sobrevivência de B. opalinus.


Analysis of feeding of the pirapitinga do sul, Brycon opalinus, an endangered fish in rivers of the Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar in southeastern Brazil, revealed the occurrence of uncommon items. Species of this genus are opportunist omnivores and feed on plant and animal items, such as flowers, leaves, fruits, seeds, and a wide variety of insects. In three rivers of State Park of the Serra do Mar - Santa Virgínia Unit, B. opalinus presented three uncommon animal items: the amphibians Hypsiboas aff. pardalis (Anura, Hylidae) and Eleutherodactylus guentheri (Anura, Leptodactylidae), and the mammal Oligoryzomys cf. nigripes (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae). This register was related with the rains, when animal or plant matter carried into the river can be consumed by B. opalinus, even if they are not habitually eaten by this species. The preserved riparian forest is of prime importance in supplying animal and plant food items and for maintaining biotic and abiotic conditions for the survival of B. opalinus.
