RESUMO

Coastal areas are affected by urban, industrial and agriculture pollutants runoff, wastewater and stormwater discharges, making this environment the final repository of chemical contaminants. These contaminants have the potential to spread out to the entire food chain, impacting marine life and the quality of their habitat. In this aspect, the concept of marine mammals as bioindicators provides an approach to the degree of contamination in the environment and to the identification and management of multiple sources of contaminants. The present study analyzed several elements like As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V and Zn in liver tissue from two dolphin species: Sotalia guianensis, a near-threatened species, and the vulnerable Pontoporia blainvillei. In the study, we also investigated if dolphins (population) recorded using the heaviest urban areas have higher concentrations of contaminants in their tissues. Dolphin samples (n = 40 S. guianensis; n = 97 P. blainvillei) were collected by daily monitoring carried out by Santos Basin Beach Monitoring Project (PMP-BS), from stranded individuals found in São Paulo state. The Spearman's rank correlation showed distinct correlations in the accumulation of trace elements by both species, indicating different sources of exposure to the elements studied or distinct biochemical processes between species. Interspecific and intraspecific variations were observed, possibly related to the individual distribution and feeding habits. Correlations were observed between age and concentrations of trace elements, positive for Cd, Hg and Mo. Finally, our findings indicate high levels of Cu, Zn, and concentrations of As, V and Hg in fetuses, in particular, an analysis was performed on a fetus found inside a stranded individual, indicating placental transfer as the first route of exposure for some elements.

Objective: The Visual Short-Term Memory Binding (VSTMB) Test is a useful tool in the assessment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Research has suggested that short-term memory binding is insensitive to the sociocultural characteristics of the assessed individuals. Such earlier studies addressed this influence by considering years of education. The current study aims to determine the influence of sociocultural factors via a measure of Socioeconomic Status (SES) which provides a more holistic approach to these common confounders. Methods: A sample of 126 older adults, both with (n = 59) and without (n = 67) amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), underwent assessment using a neuropsychological protocol including VSTMB test. All participants were classified as either high SES or low SES, employing the Standard Demographic Classification from the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research. Results: ANOVA/ANCOVA models confirmed that performance of healthy and aMCI participants on traditional neuropsychological tests were sensitive to SES whereas the VSTMB Test was not. The results add to the growing array of evidence suggesting that there are cognitive abilities which are unaffected by socioeconomic factors, regardless of clinical condition. Conclusions: The lack of sensitivity to sociocultural factors previously reported for the VSTMB test is accompanied by a lack of sensitivity to socioeconomic factors thus broadening the scope of this test to aid in the detection of dementia across populations with different backgrounds. Future studies should take these findings forward and explore the potential influences of AD biomarkers (A/T/N) on the association between cognitive functions and demographic variables.

The profitability of the beef cattle production system relies heavily on reproductive traits. Unfortunately, certain traits, such as age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), and gestation length (GL), can pose challenges in traditional breeding programs because of their low heritability (0.01-0.12) and sex-limited characteristics. Another important aspect is the conservation of the genetic resources of animals adapted to the Colombian regions, which implies the preservation and rational use of the creole breeds in the country market. Therefore, this study aimed to identify genomic regions in the creole cattle breed Blanco Orejinegro (BON) that influence the reproductive traits in females. The dataset comprised 439 animals and 118,116 single-nucleotide polymorphisms' (SNPs) markers. The GS3 program was used to identify the SNP effects employing the BAYES Cπ methodology. The number of SNPs with effect for AFC was 25, 1527 for CI, and 23 for GL. Some of the genes found associated with reproductive and growth traits as well as immune response and environmental adaptation ECE1, EPH, EPHB2, SMARCAL1, IGFBP5, IGFBP2, FCGRT, EGFR, MUL1, PINK1, STPG1, CNGB1, TGFB1, OXTR, IL22RA1, MYOM3, OXTR, CNR2, HIVEP3, CTPS1, CXCL8, FCGRT, MREG, TMEM169, PECR, and MC1R. Our results evidenced a high contribution of the genetic architecture of the Colombian creole cattle breed Blanco Orejinegro that may impact should be included in implementing genetic improvement and conservation programs.

Resumen El infarto pulmonar (IP) resulta de la oclusión de las arterias pulmonares distales que generan isquemia, hemorragia y finalmente necrosis del parénquima pulmonar, siendo la causa más frecuente la embolia pulmonar (EP). El diagnóstico oportuno de IP permite el inicio precoz del tratamiento y el respectivo manejo de sostén, disminuyendo así la morbimortalidad asociada. El objetivo de esta revisión es remarcar la importancia de identificar aquellos signos, que en la tomografía computada (TC) sin contraste son altamente sensibles y específicos para el diagnóstico de IP. La TC de alta resolución constituye el método que más información aporta, pudiendo observar signos clásicos de IP como la opacidad en forma de cuña, opacidad con radiolucencia central y el signo del vaso nutricio; así como signos con alto valor predictivo negativo para IP, como la opacidad consolidativa con broncograma aéreo, sugestivo de otras patologías, ya sean infecciosas o tumorales.


Abstract Pulmonary infarction (PI) results from occlusion of the distal pulmonary arteries leading to ischemia, hemorrhage, and necrosis of the pulmonary parenchyma. The most common cause of pulmonary infarction is pulmonary embolism (PE). Early diagnosis of PI allows early initiation of treatment and supportive care, thus reducing the associated morbidity and mortality. This review aims to highlight the importance of identifying signs that are highly sensitive and specific for the diagnosis of PE even without IV contrast. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) is the method that provides the most information, as it observes classic signs of PI such as wedge-shaped opacity, central lucencies in peripheral consolidation, and the feeding vessel sign, as well as signs with high negative predictive value such as consolidating opacity with air bronchogram that are suggestive of other pathologies, whether infectious or tumoural.

Objective: The objective of this study was to associate the 1016G > A variant of the melanocortin-4 receptor gene with lamb's weight, growth, and meat quality in the Colombian hair sheep breed. Materials and Methods: A total of 168 lambs, weights were measured at birth weight (BW), at weaning adjusted weaning weight (AWW), at 6 months [adjusted weight (AW180)], at slaughter adjusted slaughter weight (ASW), daily weight gain preweaning daily gain (preWDG), and postweaning daily gain (postWDG) weaning, and after slaughter, pH, texture, and cook-loss (CL) in the longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle according to the American Meat Science Association methodology. The 1016G > A genotypes were obtained by sequencing. Genotypic and allele frequencies, heterozygosities, and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) were estimated. Using a generalized linear model, the genotype and the allelic substitution effect were associated with the evaluated traits. Results: The heterozygous genotype (0.48) and G allele (0.61) were the most frequent. Heterozygosities were similar (0.47), indicating HWE. The genotype affected the BW (p < 0.05), with a higher value for the GG genotype (2.69 kg). AWW (12.75 kg), AW180 (19.67 kg), and ASW (31.21 kg) weights and daily weight gain (preWDG = 115.41 gm; postWDG = 96.16 gm) were not associated. Average pH, Warner-Bratzler shear force, and CL were 5.75 units, 49.46 N, and 32.02%, with no genotype effect. The G > A substitution only affected BW at -388 gm (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The 1016G > A variant is polymorphic and affects the BW but not other growth traits or the meat quality of the LTL muscle.

Transition-metal (TM) substituted SrTiO3 has attracted much attention because its magnetism and/or ferroelectricity can be tuned via cation substitution, point defects, strain and/or oxygen deficiency. For example, Goto et al. [Phys. Rev. Applied, 7, 024006 (2017)] reported the magnetization of SrTi1-xFexO3-δ (STF) grown under different oxygen pressures and on various substrates. Here, we use hybrid density functional theory to calculate the effects of different oxygen vacancy (VO) states in STF on the magnetization for a variety of Fe cation arrangements. The magnetic states of the cations associated with the VO ground-states for x = {0.125, 0.25} are used within a Monte Carlo model for collinear magnetism to simulate the spontaneous magnetization. Our model captures several experimental features of STF, i.e., an increase in magnetization for small δ up to a maximum of ∼0.35µB per formula unit at an intermediate number of vacancies, with a slower decrease in magnetization with an increasing number of vacancies. Our approach gives insight into the relation between vacancy concentration and the oxygen pressure required to maximize the magnetization.

OBJECTIVE: Painful Phantom Limb Syndrome (PPLS) occurs in 50 to 80% of patients undergoing amputation, having a great impact on quality of life, productivity and psychosocial sphere. The objective of this review is to summarize the pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies, surgical optimization, and provide a multidisciplinary approach aimed at reducing the incidence of chronic pain associated with PPLS in patients undergoing limb amputation. METHODS: A narrative review was carried out using Medline, Pubmed, Proquest, LILACS and Cochrane, searching for articles between 2000 and 2021. Articles describing the epidemiology, pathophysiological considerations, and current treatments were selected after a screening process. RESULTS: A multidisciplinary and multimodal approach is required in PPLS, and should include the use of regional techniques, and adjuvants such as NSAIDs, ketamine, lidocaine and gabapentinoids. In addition, an evaluation and continuous management of risk factors for chronic pain in conjunction with the surgical team is necessary. CONCLUSION: The current literature does not support that a single technique is effective inthe prevention of PPLS. However, adequate acute pain control, rehabilitation and early restoration of the body scheme under a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach have shown benefit in the acute setting.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is higher in developing countries. Childhood trauma exposure is a common environmental risk factor in Colombia and might be associated with a more severe course of bipolar disorder in Low-Middle Income-Countries. We carried out the first case-control study in Colombia using a structural clinical interview and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) to describe the prevalence and association between trauma exposure during childhood with a severe course of illness (early age onset, rapid cycling, ideation or suicide attempt, or ≥ 3 hospitalization) in a sample of BD patients. RESULTS: A total of 114 cases and 191 controls evaluated showed the following results. Cases included 61.4% BD type I and 38.6% BD type II. The median age was 31.5 years (IQR, 75-24) for BD patients and 31 years old (IQR, 38-24) for healthy controls. A higher prevalence of childhood trauma was evidenced in cases compared to controls. Emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect and emotional neglect evidenced a strong association with severe bipolar disorder (OR = 3.42, p < .001; OR = 4.68, p < .001; OR = 4.30, p = .003; OR = 5.10, p < .001; OR = 5.64, p < .001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first association study between childhood trauma exposure as a higher risk for a severe course of illness in BD patients in Colombian. Our findings highlight the higher prevalence of childhood trauma in bipolar patients and the strong association of childhood trauma with severe bipolar disorder. These findings are relevant for screening and evaluating childhood trauma exposure during the course of BD patients.

Introduction and objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of different artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for the identification of pulmonary involvement by SARS-CoV-2 based on portable chest radiography (RX). Material and methods: Prospective observational study that included patients admitted for suspected COVID-19 infection in a university hospital between July and November 2020. The reference standard of pulmonary involvement by SARS-CoV-2 comprised a positive PCR test and low-tract respiratory symptoms. Results: 493 patients were included, 140 (28%) with positive PCR and 32 (7%) with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. The AI-B algorithm had the best diagnostic performance (areas under the ROC curve AI-B 0.73, vs. AI-A 0.51, vs. AI-C 0.57). Using a detection threshold greater than 55%, AI-B had greater diagnostic performance than the specialist [(area under the curve of 0.68 (95% CI 0.64-0.72), vs. 0.54 (95% CI 0.49-0.59)]. Conclusion: AI algorithms based on portable RX enabled a diagnostic performance comparable to human assessment for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 lung involvement.


Introducción y objetivo: Evaluar el rendimiento diagnóstico de diferentes algoritmos de inteligencia artificial (IA) para la identificación de compromiso pulmonar por SARS-CoV-2 basados en radiografía (Rx) de tórax portátil. Material y método: Estudio observacional prospectivo que incluyó pacientes ingresados por sospecha de infección por COVID-19 en un hospital universitario entre julio y noviembre de 2020. El patrón de referencia de compromiso pulmonar por SARS-CoV-2 comprendió una PCR positiva y síntomas respiratorios bajos. Resultados: Se incluyeron 493 pacientes, 140 (28%) con PCR positiva y 32 (7%) con neumonía por SARS-CoV-2. El algoritmo AI-B tuvo el mejor rendimiento diagnóstico (áreas bajo la curva ROC AI-B 0,73 vs. AI-A 0,51 vs. AI-C 0,57). Utilizando un umbral de detección superior al 55%. AI-B presentó mayor precisión que el especialista (área bajo la curva de 0,68 [IC 95%: 0,64­0,72] vs. 0,54 [IC 95%: 0,49­0,59]). Conclusión: Los algoritmos de IA basados en Rx portátiles permiten una precisión diagnóstica comparable a la humana para la detección de compromiso pulmonar por SARS-CoV-2.

In Colombia, different dairy breeds were introduced from Europe and the United States, which underwent different crossing and selection processes that generated specific qualities or differences and which likely have their own genomic structure. To characterize genetic diversity, population structure, and admixture, we used genotypes from 23,182 autosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 130 animals representing four dairy cattle breed groups from Nariño. In addition, we merged genotypes from 43,043 autosomal SNPs, from 137 animals from the Decker database (Decker et al., 2014) (DRYAD doi:10.5061/dryad.th092). After the quality control process of pruning the merged dataset, we were left with 7,475 autosomal SNPs shared by both databases of Nariño (127 samples) and Decker (135 samples). Genetic diversity levels were moderate in all breeds (average observed heterozygosity = 0.40). Based on the fixation index values, we conclude that Brahman individuals were more differentiated than the taurine breeds (-0.374 to 0.076 for Brown Swiss). Pairs between taurine breeds showed low genetic differentiation (0.011-0.479). Principal component analysis revealed that in both the Nariño and Decker databases, the taurine formed the most compact cluster compared with other breeds known not to share the same ancestry, and Jersey, Brown Swiss, and Normand individuals exhibited high similarity with Holstein individuals. Hierarchical cluster analysis with Admixture revealed that Brahman, Jersey, Normand, and Holstein from the Decker databases most of which were clustered together with the dairy breeds of the Nariño highland tropics are not able to create different groups, thus having greater similarity with each other. This can be explained by the crosses made by farmers to increase milk production volume, always based on the Holstein breed with semen of bulls from America and Canada. Detrimental impacts due to intensive selection might cause some specific traits from the region to be fixed in the offspring, which can influence their adaptive capacity to the highland tropics.


Na Colômbia foram introduzidas diferentes raças leiteiras trazidas da Europa e dos Estados Unidos, que passaram por diferentes processos de cruzamento e seleção, gerando o desenvolvimento de características ou diferenças específicas nas raças bovinas e provavelmente, exibem sua própria estrutura genômica. Para caracterizar a diversidade genética e estrutura populacional foram utilizados genótipos de 23.182 polimorfismos de nucleotídeo único (SNPs) autossômicos de 130 animais, representando quatro grupos de raças de gado leiteiro de Nariño. Além disso, juntamos genótipos de 43.043 SNPs autossômicos, de 137 animais do banco de dados Decker (Decker et al., 2014) (DRYAD doi:10.5061/dryad.th092). Após o processo de controle de qualidade, o conjunto de dados misto ficou com 7.475 SNPs autossômicos compartilhados em ambos os bancos de dados de Nariño (127 amostras) e Decker (135 amostras). Os níveis de diversidade genética foram moderados em todas as raças (heterozigose média observada = 0,40). Com base nos valores do índice de fixação, concluímos que os indivíduos Brahman (zebuínos) foram mais diferenciados em comparação às raças taurinas (-0,374 a 0,076 para Pardo Suíço). Pares entre as raças taurinas apresentaram baixa diferenciação genética (0,011 ­ 0,479). O resultado dos componentes principais mostra que nos dois bancos de dados, Nariño e Decker, os taurinos formaram o cluster mais compacto em comparação com outras raças conhecidas por não compartilharem a mesma ancestralidade; indivíduos Jersey, Pardo Suíço e Normando denotaram alta similaridade com indivíduos Holandeses. A análise de agrupamento hierárquico com Admixture mostrou que Brahman, Jersey, Normando e Holandês da base de dados Decker, a maioria deles também agrupados com as raças leiteiras do alto trópico de Nariño, não são capazes de criar grupos diferentes, portanto, mostram maior semelhança entre eles. Isso pode ser explicado devido aos cruzamentos feitos pelos pecuaristas para aumentar o volume de produção de leite, sempre tendo como base a raça Holandesa com sêmen de touros da América e Canadá. Impactos prejudiciais, devido à seleção intensiva, podem fazer com que algumas características específicas da região sejam fixadas na prole e isso pode influenciar a sua capacidade adaptativa aos trópicos altos.

Background: Mental health outcomes in Healthcare Workers (HCWs) has been few evaluated during COVID-19 pandemic in low-and middle-income countries. Our aim was carry-out a study to identify the prevalence of stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms in HCWs and associated factors to severe illness in a northern region in Colombia. Method: A cross-sectional, hospital-based survey was conducted to assess mental health outcomes in 1,149 HCWs in Colombia. The study used Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), and 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to evaluate stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms, respectively. Results: 682 HCWs completed the questionnaire. The 58,21% (397/682) were nurses, 31,23% were physicians (213/682), and 10,56% (72/682) were other health professionals. The proportion of HCWs with stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms were 59,97%, 44,87%, and 23,02%, respectively. HCWs in emergency room and Intensive Care Units (ICU) have 2-3-fold increase risk to have severe symptoms of stress. Staff in ICU have 64% more likely to have severe anxiety symptoms, and 97% more likely to have severe depression symptoms. Limitations: Including HCWs only in the northern region in Colombia; a non-probabilistic sample, and a cross-sectional design to identify causality. Conclusion: A higher proportion on mental health outcomes has been reported in HCWs in Colombia. There are work areas related with severe mental symptoms such as ICU and emergency room. Hospitals and patient-care institutions in Latin-America needs consider the mental and physical health of HCWs during outbreaks and identify health staff at-risk to implementing support strategies to mitigate adverse mental outcomes.

The Blanco Orejinegro (BON) is a Colombian creole cattle breed that is not genetically well characterized for growth traits. The aim of this work was to estimate genetic parameters for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), daily weight gain between birth and weaning (DWG), time to reach 120 kg of live weight (T120), and time to reach 60% of adult weight (T60%), and establish the selection criteria for growth traits in the BON population of Colombia. Genealogical and phenotypic information for BW, WW, YW, DWG, T120, and T60% traits of BON animals from 14 Colombian herds were used. These traits were analyzed with the AIREML method in a uni- and bi-trait animal model including the maternal effect for BW, WW, DWG, and T120. The direct heritability estimates values were 0.22 ± 0.059 (BW), 0.20 ± 0.057 (WW), 0.20 ± 0.153 (YW), 0.17 ± 0.07 (DWG), 0.26 (T120), and 0.44 ± 0.03 (T60%). The maternal heritability estimates values were 0.14 ± 0.040 (BW), 0.15 ± 0.039 (WW), 0.25 ± 0.06 (DWG), and 0.16 (T120). The direct genetic correlations were high ( >|0.60|) among all the traits, except between T60% with BW, WW, YW, and DWG (ranged from - 0.02 to - 0.51), all in a favorable direction. The results showed that there is genetic variation in the growth traits associated with the additive genetic effect, and they might respond to selection processes. Furthermore, genetic gains would improve through selection, especially for YW and T60% when WW is used as criterion.

Ecological differentiation among diverging species is an important component of the evolutionary process and can be investigated in rapid and recent radiations. Here, we use whole genome sequences of five species from the genus Leopardus, a recently diversified Neotropical lineage with species bearing distinctive morphological, ecological, and behavioral features, to investigate genome-wide diversity, comparative demographic history and signatures of positive selection. Our results show that divergent ecological strategies are reflected in genomic features, for example a generalist species shows historically larger effective population size and higher heterozygosity than habitat specialists.
