Objective: The Dentigerous Cyst (DTC) is the most common type of developmental odontogenic cyst and the second most frequent among all that occur in the jaws. It is a benign, radiolucent, usually unilocular lesion, prevalent in males, in the first three decades of life and with a greater occurrence in the mandible. It has slow and asymptomatic growth and its etiopathogenesis is still considered unknown. This paper aims to report two clinical cases of dentigerous cysts, the first in a 50-year-old patient and the second in an 11-year-old patient, both located in the mandible and involving molars. Case report: The method used to treat this lesion was decompression, in which a communication was created between the cyst and the oral cavity, placing a device to condition its drainage and subsequent enucleation ofthe lesion and the tooth involved. This treatment, being less invasive, promotes greater preservation of adjacent healthy stmctures and, consequently, a more favorable postoperative peñod. Conclusion: Therefore, it is of utmost importance that the professional is able to perform this type of procedure and has the knowledge to perform the technique, so that the risk of trans and postoperative complications is reduced... RESUMO

The current investigation was conducted to investigate the effects of different particle sizes of corn and stocking densities on performance, carcass traits and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development of Muscovy ducks in housing. 200 Muscovy ducks were distributed in a factorial scheme (2 × 2) where the treatments were constituted by two stocking densities (2 or 3 birds/m2) and two particle sizes of corn (6 or 8 mm), with five replicates of 10 birds each. At 1, 35, 70, and 90 days old, Muscovy ducks were slaughtered to evaluate the development of heart and GIT. Muscovy ducks managed in the density of 3 birds/m2 presented higher (P < 0.05) GIT development, performance and carcass traits regardless of age evaluated. In the same way, Muscovy ducks fed diets using a particle size of corn of 6 mm (Mean Geometric Diameter (MGD) = 781 µm) presented higher (P < 0.05) GIT development, performance and carcass traits regardless of age evaluated. Conclusively, the stocking density of 3 birds/m2 and the particle size of corn of 6 mm (MGD = 781 µm) were considered ideal recommendations for Muscovy ducks, providing higher GIT development, which resulted in better performance and carcass traits.

Background: Arterial hypertension treatment guided by central blood pressures (CPB) rather than peripheral blood pressures (PBP) measurement has the potential to show greater effectiveness in preventing or even regressing stiffness and target organ damage (TOD). Objective: This study aimed to compare the parameters of CBP and PBP measurements, arterial stiffness, TOD and renal profile in patients with anti-hypertensive treatment guided by CBP or PBP targets. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in central group (CG) and peripheral group (PG). Patients were randomized, evaluated every 3 months for BP and antihypertensive adjustments during a one-year follow up. The procedures in V1 and V5: anthropometric assessment; CBP/PBP measurements, carotid ultrasound; echocardiography; laboratory tests. Paired and unpaired t-tests and the χ2 were used (significance level: 5%). Results: The study evaluated 59 participants (30CG/29PG). The augmentation index (AIx) was higher in the CG (27.3% vs. 20.3%, p = 0.041). Intergroup analysis has found central diastolic BP lower in the CG (78.9 vs. 84.3 mmHg, p = 0.024) and the Alx difference between groups ceased to exist after a one-year follow-up. Intragroup comparisons, after intervention, showed a lower frequency of changed PWV (p < 0.001) and LVMI (p = 0.018) in the CG. The PG showed a higher frequency of changed PWV (p < 0.001) and LVMI (p = 0.003). Conclusion: The intervention guided by central BP reduced the central diastolic BP and AIx compared to the PG. There was a reduction in the frequency of changed PWV and LVMI in the CG.

RESUMO

Abstract Background Arterial stiffness and hypertension are strong predictors of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) are first-line antihypertensive agents in reducing blood pressure and arterial stiffness. Objective The objective of this study was to compare the effects of ACEI and ARB in reducing arterial stiffness and preventing target organ damage in patients with hypertension. Methods This observational study included 654 participants who attend routine consultations at an outpatient hypertension clinic in 2 university hospitals. Patients were interviewed, and they underwent central and peripheral blood pressure measurements. Doppler echocardiography, carotid ultrasound, biochemical tests, and anthropometric parameters were carried out. Shapiro-Wilk, chi-square, and Fisher's exact test were used. A significance level of 5% was adopted. Results A total of 659 participants were evaluated in the study (398 from the ARB group and 256 from the ACEI group). Age, body mass index (BMI), central and peripheral blood pressure measurements, pulse wave velocity (PWV), left ventricular mass index, and carotid intima-media thickness did not show differences between the groups (p > 0.05). After linear regression analysis, the ACEI group had lower values of total vascular resistance (TVR) (p = 0.003) and augmentation pressure (p = 0.008), when compared to the ARB group. Conclusion This study showed that the ACEI group had a greater reduction in augmentation pressure and PWV. There were no differences between the groups regarding the improvement of outcomes related to central arterial pressure, PWV, and cardiac and vascular target organ damage.

RESUMO

Background: The Parkinson's Disease-Cognitive Rating Scale (PD-CRS) assesses posterior-cortical and frontal-subcortical cognitive functioning and distinguishes mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI); however, it was not evaluated in Brazil. Objectives: To investigate PD-CRS's reliability, validity, normative data, and accuracy for PD-MCI screening in Brazil. Methods: The effects of age, education, and sex on PD-CRS scores were explored. The instrument was tested in 714 individuals (53% female, 21-94 years), with a broad range of education and no neurodegenerative disorder. Trail Making, Consonant Trigrams, Five-Point, and semantic fluency tests were administered for comparison. A second study enrolled patients with PD and intact cognition (n = 44, 59.75 ± 10.79 years) and with PD-MCI (n = 25, 65.76 ± 10.33 years) to investigate criterion validity. PD-CRS subtests were compared with the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Battery memory and executive tasks. Results: PD-CRS was unidimensional and reliable (McDonald's ω = 0.83). Using robust multiple regressions, age, and education predicted the total and derived scores in the normative sample. At the 85-point cutoff, PD-MCI was detected with 68% sensitivity and 86% specificity (area under the curve = 0.870). PD-CRS scores strongly correlated with executive and verbal/visual memory tests in both normative and clinical samples. Conclusions: This study investigated the applicability of PD-CRS in the Brazilian context. The scale seems helpful in screening for PD-MCI, with adequate internal consistency and construct validity. The PD-CRS variance is influenced by age and educational level, a critical issue for cognitive testing in countries with educational and cultural heterogeneity.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Introduction: Medical planning for mass gathering events is founded on the structuring of assistance to the population involved and the preservation of the response capacities of the local healthcare system. Large sporting events attended by crowds are increasingly common in society. These events have been shown to be dangerous, generating higher incidences of injuries and illnesses than usual. Thus, planning and the interaction among various public and private sectors are required for the prevention of and response to emergencies and incidents involving multiple victims. Methods: Recently published studies on medical planning for large sports events and current federal agency legislation were selected to conduct an updated review on the subject. Results: After reading titles and abstracts, 159 papers were chosen for a full reading, 50 of which met the eligibility criteria and were included as the basis for this review. The size of the audience, the weather, and the behavior of the crowd seem to contribute significantly to the estimated need for resources in sporting events. Conclusion: Mass events require planning for prevention and to strengthen the resilience of host communities. There is a still a lack of evidence that these events increase the risk of the mass spreading of disease. Level of Evidence: V; Expert opinion .

RESUMO

One of the significant challenges today in the brain-machine interfaces that use invasive methods is the stability of the chronic record. In recent years, polymer-based electrodes have gained notoriety for achieving mechanical strength values close to that of brain tissue, promoting a lower immune response to the implant. In this work, we fabricated fully polymeric electrodes based on PEDOT:PSS for neural recording in Wistar rats. We characterized the electrical properties and both in vitro and in vivo functionality of the electrodes. Additionally, we employed histological processing and microscopical visualization to evaluate the tecidual immune response at 7, 14, and 21 days post-implant. Electrodes with 400-micrometer channels showed a 12 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Local field potentials were characterized under two conditions: anesthetized and free-moving. There was a proliferation of microglia at the tissue-electrode interface in the early days, though there was a decrease after 14 days. Astrocytes also migrated to the interface, but there was not continuous recruitment of these cells in the tissue; there was inflammatory stability by day 21. The signal was not affected by this inflammatory action, demonstrating that fully polymeric electrodes can be an alternative means to prolong the valuable time of neural recordings.

RESUMO

The low natural fertility and compaction of agricultural soils in the Cerrado are the main limitations for agricultural production. Changes in management systems are necessary to optimize the use of natural resources. The objective of this study was to map and evaluate the presence of penetration resistance and its relationship with soil chemical attributes in pasture areas in the Cerrado of Piauí. The experiment was carried out in the municipality of Corrente-PI, Brazil. The areawas divided into two sub-areas of 0.5 ha each: the first is remaining vegetation and the second is pasture. Fifty soil samples were collected in the 0.00-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 mlayers, with a sampling grid of 10 x 10 m. The pHin water, organic matter, calcium, magnesium, and soil penetration resistance were analyzed. The introduction of animals in the pasture area increased soil compaction by 2%. Chemical attributes, pH, organic matter, calcium and magnesium vary according to soil compaction by 2%. The native forest area has soil penetration resistance at acceptable levels (<2MPa)and availability of nutrientsat adequate levels. The maps of variability of organic matter, calcium, magnesium and penetration resistanceshowed the heterogeneity of the areas, allowing decisions based on specific management zones, localized application of nutrients and decompaction, and recovery of areas with inefficient management.(AU)

Non-standard diesel blends can be harmful to the environment and human health. In this context, a simple analytical method to estimate the biodiesel mixture ratio in diesel was developed based on impedance spectroscopy (IS) associated with interdigitated sensors. In this article, four different interdigitated sensors with varied comb spacing (G) were simulated using the COMSOL Multiphysics software. Based on finite element simulations, four interdigitated electrode architectures were manufactured and evaluated. The best geometry was chosen according to theoretical data simulations, and its interdigitated electrodes were manufactured for the compositional evaluation of pseudo-binary biodiesel-diesel mixtures. According to the X-ray powder diffraction technique, the deposition of the conductive layer (Au0) over the surface of the dielectric substrate (SiO2) did not alter its phase composition. In the analysis of AFM and SEM, it was possible to observe irregular edges on the electrodes, possibly related to the manufacturing process of the thin layers and mechanical stability. Another characteristic observed in the AFM images was the height of the step of the gold layer of the sensor. Several cross sections were obtained, and the mean step value was 225.71 ± 0.0032 nm. Although there were differences in the roughness, the whole sensor had nanometric roughness. Based on the finite element method simulation performed, it can be assumed that the geometric parameters more suitable for the manufacturing of the electrode are W = 20 µm, L = 1000 µm, G = 50 µm, and N = 40 digits. The electrical characterization performed by impedance spectroscopy showed that we could differentiate between biodiesel and diesel fuels and their pseudo-binary mixtures in the low-frequency region.

(AU)

RESUMO

Objective: To systematically review the literature to identify controlled clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of deep dry needling (DDN) in the treatment of patients with chronic masticatory myofascial pain (MMP).Methods: The sample size for a clinical trial was calculated and involved five patients who consecutively presented for treatment of MMP. The percentage of change in the means of three consecutive measurements of the pressure pain threshold (PPT) of myofascial trigger points (MTPs) was calculated and the statistical significance of this difference evaluated using the Wilcoxon test. Results: Twenty-five studies were considered for inclusion based on title and abstract. Only 2 studies met the inclusion criteria and were used to calculate the sample size. DDN significantly increased (p = 0.04) the PPT in MTP (44.6%) compared with sham procedure (-5.5%).Conclusion: Patients with chronic MMP treated with DDN of MTPs showed an increase in PPT measurements on the experimental side.Abbreviations: CGRP: calcitonin gene-related peptide; DC/TMD: diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders; DDN: deep dry needling; DN: dry needling; LILACS: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences; MMP: masticatory myofascial pain; MTP: myofascial trigger point; MTPs: myofascial trigger points; PPT: pressure pain threshold; RCTs: randomized clinical trials; SciELO: Scientific Electronic Library Online; SP: Substance P; TMD: temporomandibular disorders.

Objective: This article aims to identify and describe the path of the discomaleolar ligament (DML) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and methods: MRIs were acquired from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region of two research participants using a 1.5 T SIGNA Explorer device. Conclusion: based on the images, we could observe a structure with an upward direction originating in the bilaminar zone towards the middle ear region. After analysis, the images obtained suggest that the observed structure is the DML.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare the levels of non-specific physical symptoms and pressure pain threshold (PPT) found in patients with masticatory myofascial pain with those found in patients with temporomandibular arthralgia alone. Methods: The study followed an observational and cross-sectional protocol. A total of 64 female patients were evaluated for the presence of painful TMD, non-specific physical symptom levels, and PPT. Results: The group of patients with masticatory myofascial pain presented a lower mean for PPT as well as a higher mean for standardized T-Scores for non-specific physical symptom levels. Conclusion: Statistically significant differences were found in non-specific physical symptom levels and PPT between patients with an exclusive diagnosis of masticatory myofascial pain and patients with a diagnosis, also exclusive, of temporomandibular arthralgia.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Chemical investigation of the aqueous fraction of the ethanol extract from the Brazilian endemic marine sponge Clathria (Clathria) nicoleae Vieira de Barros, Santos & Pinheiro, 2013, Microcionidae, sampled from a 55 m deep rhodolith bed at the Amazon River mouth, led to the isolation of a new hexapeptide, clathriamide (1). HP-20 resin was used to capture compound 1 from the aqueous fraction, which was purified by additional chromatographic steps. The absolute configuration of the amino acids of 1 was determined by advanced Marfey's analysis using 5-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-Nα-L-tryptophanamide. The amino acid derivatives analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometry using a C8 column enabled a good chromatographic resolution of L-Ile and L-allo-Ile, previously unfeasible using C18 column.
