Leptospirosis is an infectious disease with a worldwide distribution, which represents a major challenge in animal production across developing countries, mainly in tropical areas. Horses are particularly susceptible to the disease, presenting manifestations ranging from subclinical to the development of uveitis that compromises the visual health of the animals. In recent years, serological studies have been carried out in equid populations from America, demonstrating high exposure. For this reason, the aim of this study was to demonstrate microbiologically and molecularly the presence of the members of the genus Leptospira in urine samples from equids in an endemic state of leptospirosis in Mexico, and to detect the serological presence of anti-Leptospira antibodies in the sampled animals. For this reason, blood and urine samples were collected from 28 horses and one mule from three localities in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Urine samples were inoculated in Ellinghausen-McCullough-Johnson-Harris (EMJH) medium, and the recovered isolates were typed using a short Multi Locus Sequence Typing scheme. Amplifications of the expected size were subjected to sequencing, and the recovered sequences were compared with those of reference deposited in GenBank using the BLAST tool. To identify their phylogenetic position, we performed a phylogenetic reconstruction using the maximum likelihood method. Additionally, Microscopic Agglutination test was performed on the serum samples to identify anti-Leptospira antibodies. We recovered 16 urine isolates which tested positive for the presence of Leptospira DNA. The phylogenetic reconstruction and the MLST analysis confirmed the presence of several genotypes of Leptospira interrogans and Leptospira santarosai. An overall serological frequency of 97.1 % was detected. Our results represent the first record of the presence of Leptospira through bacteriological isolates in equids from Mexico.

The genus Bartonella encompasses 38 validated species of Gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacteria that colonize the endothelial cells and erythrocytes of a wide spectrum of mammals. To date, 12 Bartonella species have been recorded infecting humans, causing diseases of long historical characterization, such as cat scratch fever and trench fever, and emerging bartonellosis that mainly affect animal health professionals. For this reason, this study aimed to report a documented case of Bartonella bovis infecting a veterinarian from Mexico by the amplification, sequencing and phylogenetic reconstruction of the citrate synthase (gltA) and the RNA polymerase beta-subunit (rpoB) genes, and to report the natural course of this infection. To our knowledge, this work is the first to report the transmission of B. bovis via needlestick transmission to animal health workers in Latin America.

The interest in multifunctional biomaterials to be implanted are also able to release drugs that reduce pain and inflammation or prevent a possible infection has increased. Bioactive materials such as silica (SiO2) containing surface silanol groups contribute to the nucleation and growth of hydroxyapatite (HAp) in a physiological environment. Regarding biocompatibility, the spherical shape of particles is the desirable one, since it does not cause mechanical damage to the cell membrane. In this work, the synthesis of SiO2 microspheres was performed by the modified Stöber method and they were used for the biomimetic growth of HAp on their surface. The effect of the type of surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and polyethylene glycol (PEG)), and heat treatment on the morphology and size of SiO2 particles was investigated. Monodisperse, spherical-shaped SiO2 microparticles with an average particle size of 179 nm, were obtained when using PEG (SiO2-PEG). The biomimetic growth of HAp was performed on this sample to improve its biocompatibility and drug-loading capacity using gentamicin as a model drug. Biomimetic growth of HAp was confirmed by FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDX and TEM techniques. SiO2-PEG/HAp sample had a better biocompatibility in vitro and gentamicin loading capacity than SiO2-PEG sample.

The objective of this study was to synthesize a diallyl carbonate monomer, allyl(2-(2-(((allyloxy)carbonyl)oxy)benzoyl)-5-methoxyphenyl) carbonate (BZ-AL), and to evaluate its effect as Bis-GMA diluent in the formulation of photopolymerizable dental composite resins. The chemical structure of BZ-AL monomer was determined by means of H1 NMR, C13 NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. An experimental composite comprising a mixture of Bis-GMA and BZ-AL monomers and silanized inorganic filler was formulated. Experimental material was compared with a control composite formulated with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA. Double bond conversion, polymerization kinetics, volumetric shrinkage, polymerization stress, and flexural properties were investigated. The data were analyzed through a Student t-test (α = 0.05). Flexural strength of the experimental materials with BZ-AL monomer showed a statistically significant increase (p < 0.001). The experimental composite has a lower polymerization rate than the control composite, on the other hand, the experimental composite resin has the highest degree of double bond conversion. There are no differences in the polymerization shrinkage of the composites, however, the polymerization stress of the experimental materials was 50% lower than the control resin. Finally, the cell viability test showed that the experimental resins formulated with the BZ-AL monomer was not cytotoxic. Due to its characteristics, BZ-AL monomer is potentially useful for the formulation of composite materials with applications in dentistry.

Tagetes lucida Cav. (Asteraceae = Compositae) se usa para tratar infecciones estomacales. El estudio se centró en evaluar la composición y el efecto antimicrobiano de un extracto de T. lucida Cav. La planta se extrajo con etanol al 10% p/v, y la composición del extracto se analizó por Rp-HPLC-MS. El efecto antibacteriano se evaluó contra Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa y Salmonella choleraesuis utilizando métodos de difusión por disco, microdilución y bioautografía. Los ensayos de sytox y cometa fueron utilizados para evaluar el mecanismo de acción. De esta forma, se detectaron nueve compuestos fenólicos en el extracto de T. lucida. El extracto exhibió actividad solo en S. aureus (MIC de 4.000 mg/ml). La bioautografía reveló que los compuestos fenólicos podrían actuar sinérgicamente. Las pruebas de sytox y cometa mostraron una acción antibacteriana del extracto sobre la membrana bacteriana y el ADN de esta cepa bacteriana.
Tagetes lucida Cav. (Asteraceae=Compositae) is used for treating stomach infections. The study focused on evaluating the composition and antimicrobial effect of an extract of T. lucida Cav. The plant extracted with ethanol at 10% w/v, and the extract composition analyzed by Rp-HPLC-MS. The antibacterial effect was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella choleraesuis using disk diffusion, microdilution and bioautography methods. The sytox and comet assays were used to evaluate the mechanism of action. In this way, nine phenolic compounds were detected in the extract of T. lucida. The extract exhibited activity only on S. aureus (MIC of 4.000 mg/ml). The bioautography revealed that the phenolic compounds could act synergistically. The sytox and comet tests showed an antibacterial action of the extract on the bacterial membrane and DNA of this bacterial strain.
