RESUMO

Scolytinae species that, in high populations, can damage reducing wood production in forest crops. These beetles are monitored with traps baited with ethanol and increasing their efficiency can improve the integrated management of these insects. The objective was to evaluate the increase in the capture efficiency of Scolytinae with a semi-funnel trap model, in two experiments, one including wooden elements and other increasing the flight interception area and to correlate the numbers of these beetles collected with climatic factors. In the experiment 1, Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake slats were directly attached to the collector flask and in another treatment, in addition to these slats, Cedrela sp. strips were inserted inside the bait holding hose. In the experiment 2, the insect interception area in the trap, originally 480 cm2, was expanded to 1,200 cm2 and compared with the model Pet-Santa Maria trap with an interception area of 550 cm2. Weekly collections were carried out between May 2018 and June 2019. The beetles collected were taken to the Wood Biodeterioration Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) where they were sorted, identified at family level, counted and their number correlated with climatic factors. Statistical analyzes of the collected data were processed by the BioStat® 5.3 program. In the experiment 1 were collected 869 Scolytinae. The numbers of beetles collected per trap without modification, with E. urophylla slats and E. urophylla slats + Cedrela sp. strips were similar, 7.3 ± 3.8, 7.8 ± 6.2 and 7.7 ± 5.0 respectively. In the experiment 2 were collected 4,398 Scolytinae. Increasing the interception area of the beetles increased the efficiency of the semi-funnel trap, with 42.7 ± 20.5 Scolytinae collected compared to the original semi-funnel trap, 28.6 ± 12.6 and the Pet-Santa Maria, 20.4 ± 10.4, per trap. The number of Scolytinae did not correlate with climatic factors in the experiment 1 and it was correlated with temperature, relative humidity and wind speed, but not with precipitation, in the 2. The incorporation of E. urophylla slats or Cedrela sp. strips in the semi-funnel trap did not increase the number of beetles collected, but, the increase in the flight interception area and the temperature, relative humidity and wind speed were correlated with the number of beetles collected.

This work reports an analytical method for determining electrical resistivity (ρ) and sheet resistance (RS) of isotropic conductors. The method is compared with previous numerical solutions and available experimental data showing a universal behavior for isotropic conductors. An approximated solution is also reported allowing one to easily determine ρ and RS for samples either with regular or arbitrary shapes.

The radiographic relationship of the distal phalanx with the hoof capsule was verified in Creole breed horses and these findings correlated with signs of obesity and insulin blood levels. Horses were divided in two groups based on their body score condition (ECC). The average age was 9.2±5.8 years in normal (ECC 5-7) and 10.3±3.7 years in the obese group (ECC 8-9). Statistical differences between groups (P<0.05) were detected for values of weight, thoracic girth, body score condition, neck score (ECP), neck length, neck circumference into three regions based on 25% (P25), 50% (P50) and 75% (P75) of the length of the neck and phalanx and hoof capsule relationship. The angle between the dorsal aspects of distal phalanx and hoof wall (rotation angle) statistically correlated with ECC (r = 0.30; P=0.02) and with weight and thoracic girth (r = 0.50; P<0.01). Plasma insulin concentrations positively correlated with ECP (r = 0.40, P <0.01) and rotation angle (r = 0.23, P = 0.08) and negatively with age (r = -0.42, P <.01). In eight animals (27%) rotation angle was greater than 2 degrees, of which 25% were normal and obese 75% (P <0.05). Apparently in Creole horses, morphometric characteristics of the hoof differ from international standards obtained from other breeds. Obesity interfered with the spatial relationship of the distal phalanx with the hoof capsule, indicating that obese animals of this breed are more likely to develop laminitis.(AU)

RESUMO

We estimated the prevalence of hepatitis C (HCV) infection and associated risk factors in 750 individuals attending the Voluntary Counseling and Testing Center of Rio Grande (VCT/RG), in Southern Brazil, and identified viral genotypes. Demographic data and risk factors for HCV transmission were also collected and analysed. Anti-HCV antibody-positive individuals were tested for HCV-RNA and genotyped by sequencing the 5' untranslated region of the viral genome. Prevalence estimates of anti-HCV and HCV-RNA were 6% and 5.5%, respectively. We identified genotypes 1 (67%), 2 (2%) and 3 (31%); the latter was more prevalent than in other regions of Brazil. Anti-HCV prevalence in VCT/RG users was similar to previous reports. Age, previous blood transfusion, sexual orientation and injecting drug use were independent predictors of HCV infection. The presence of multiple risk factors was also associated with a higher risk for HCV infection. HCV genotype was not associated with any variable analysed in this study.

RESUMO

In this work, we investigated the effect of the acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) supplementation (200 mg/kg/day) on the myenteric neurons of the ileum of rats made diabetic by streptozotocin (35 mg/kg, i.v.). Four groups were used: diabetic (D), diabetic supplemented with ALC (DC), control (C) and control supplemented with ALC (CC). After 15 weeks of diabetes induction the animals were killed and the ileum was collected and subjected to whole-mount preparation to evidence the myenteric neurons through the histochemical technique of the NADH-diaphorase. The density of neurons seen in 12.72 mm2 of ileum showed no difference among the groups, although in group D it was 22% smaller than in group C, while group DC was 9% smaller to group CC. The profiles of the cell bodies (PC) of 1000 neurons per group were analysed. The neurons PC in group D decreased (P < 0.0001) when compared with other groups and increased (P < 0.0001) when compared with group DC. The incidence of neurons with a PC inferior to 200 microm2 was larger in group D. The frequency of neurons with a PC higher than 200 microm2 in group DC was close to those seen in groups C and CC. We concluded that ALC eases the loss of neurons and makes the incidence of myenteric neurons with a PC higher than 200 microm2 similar to the control rats.

RESUMO

X-ray and neutron-diffraction, dc magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific-heat measurements are reported for FexCo(1-x)Ta2O6 mixed oxides. X-ray refinement indicates homogeneous samples for all the reported concentrations. The neutron-diffraction measurements reveal magnetic structures with double propagation vectors (+/-1/4,1/4,1/4) for CoTa2O6, and (1/2,0,1/2) and (0,1/2,1/2) for FeTa2O6. The latter remain unchanged in the Fe-rich samples, for 0.46< or =x<1.00, while the Co-rich samples show propagation vectors (+/-1/4,1/4,0) for 0.09< or =x<0.46. The temperature vs x phase diagram exhibits a bicritical point at about T=4.9 K and x=0.46. For this concentration, and at low temperatures, the system shows coexistence of both magnetic structures. This novel bicritical behavior is interpreted as induced by competition between the different magnetic and crystallographic structures.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to analyse the apical leakage in teeth filled by the lateral condensation technique following medication with calcium hydroxide. One hundred and twenty extracted human teeth were biomechanically prepared by using exclusively reaming motion with files up to #40. Half of the teeth received a calcium hydroxide dressing for 3 days. The medication was removed by irrigation and reaming motion with files #40 up to #70. The teeth were divided in 6 experimental groups, according to the dimension of the utilized instrument. The root canals were filled and posteriorly the teeth were placed into a 2% methylene blue dye solution inside a flask, which was attached to a vacuum pump. Leakage was measured linearly, and the results showed significantly (p<0.01) less leakage in the experimental groups that received calcium hydroxide dressings than in the control groups. The results persisted even after the removal of 300 micrometers of dentin from the root canal dentinal walls.

RESUMO

The flexion deformity of the wrist in cerebral palsy is quite common, carrying disability to the effective use of the hands. From 1980 to 1990, 36 transferences of the pronator teres to the extensor carpi radialis were reviewed. The authors describe the operative technique by a unique incision, that may be used in cerebral palsy, and conclude that it is a good method for correction of deformity.
