RESUMO

After an extensive revision of the literature, we come to the following conclusions concerning the nomenclature of Southern African monkey beetles of the subtribe Pachycnemina: firstly, the current usage of the nominal subgenus Pachycnemula Schein, 1959 for a subgenus taxon different from Pachycnema s. str. Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau Audinet-Serville, 1828 is incorrect since both names share the same type species-Melolontha crassipes Fabricius, 1775-and are therefore objective synonyms. Hence, here we invalidate Pachycnemula and establish the new nominal subgenus Macacoplia Cupello Ribeiro-Costa to denote the subgenus taxon currently known as Pachycnema (Pachycnemula). Secondly, we discuss the different spellings of the nominal genus Lepithrix Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau Audinet-Serville, 1828, which was originally established as Lepitrix but emended to Lepithrix in 1913 by Dalla Torre. Although originally an unjustified emendation, the Lepithrix spelling is currently in prevailing usage and therefore should be deemed a justified emendation according to Article 33.2.3.1 of the current edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. That being so, it becomes necessary to acknowledge the homonymy between Lepithrix Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau Audinet-Serville and its junior homonym Lepithrix Neitner, 1857, current junior synonym of Loxoncus Schmidt-Göbel, 1846 (Carabidae: Harpalinae: Harpalini: Stenolophina).

RESUMO

In this work, it is explained why previous authors who considered that Canthidium lentum Erichson, 1947 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) was fixed as the type species of Canthidium Erichson, 1847 in Robert Lucas' 1920 catalogue of Coleoptera genera were mistaken. Instead, the first authors to designate a type species for Canthidium were Martínez et al. in 1964, who designated C. thalassinum Erichson, 1847. Since both species are currently placed in different subgenera, the subgeneric classication must change: Eucanthidium Halffter Martínez, 1986 is a new junior synonym of Canthidium, while the subgenus previously considered to be Canthidium (Canthidium) is changed to Canthidium (Neocanthidium) Martínez et al., 1964 based on the revalidation of the latter name. A checklist containing information on the type locality, type material, synonymy, and distribution of all the 172 valid species included in the genus (72 in the nominotypical subgenus, 69 in Neocanthidium, and 31 as incertae sedis) is presented, as well as a review of the taxonomic history of Canthidium and the new synonymy between C. (C.) ardens Bates, 1887 and Canthidium ardens mutatum Bates, 1887.

RESUMO

Currently 13 species-group names assigned to the subgenus Megaphanaeus of Coprophanaeus are deemed available (or 'potentially available'), four of which denote valid species. In the present work we review the nomenclatural history of those names and conclude that two of them, Scarabaeus satelles Lichtenstein, 1796 and Copris ajax Sturm, 1826, are unavailable. For the other 11 names, we found type specimens of five, Scarabaeus bellicosus Olivier, 1789, Copris ensifer Germar, 1821, Phanaeus septentrionalis Pêssoa, 1934, P. vicinus Martínez, 1944, and P. vicinus var. argentinus Martínez, 1944. Two lectotypes are designated, one for Copris ensifer and other for Phanaeus septentrionalis. We were unable to locate the type series of the four names described by Castelnau (1840), i.e. Phanaeus ducalis, P. sylvanus, P. heros and P. miles, and of P. bonariensis Gory, 1844 and Scarabaeus lancifer Linné, 1767. For the latter, based on some iconotypes, we found that its type series was composite, including specimens of two different Megaphanaeus species, and, in addition, it was mixed with Copris ensifer type series. In order to fix the name to a sole species, a neotype is designated for Scarabaeus lancifer. The history of the names are presented in detail, and the application of these names to species is briefly re-discussed.

RESUMO

Recently, a new paper authored by two of us (Rossini & Vaz-de-Mello, 2015) addressed a taxonomic revision of Chalcocopris Burmeister, 1846, describing a second species for the genus and expanding our knowledge of its distribution and morphological diversity. In the present work, we address additional nomenclatural and historical issues not covered in that paper.

RESUMO

In this work, we propose the following taxonomic acts: in Elaphidiini, Ambonus variatus (Newman, 1841) is transferred to Centrocerum Chevrolat, 1861 and has as new junior synonyms Elaphidion elegans Chevrolat, 1861 and E. elegans var. hirsutum, var. jocosum, and var. puberulum, all names proposed by Chevrolat in 1861 as varieties and deemed here as available. In Acanthocinini, Leptostylus neivai Melzer, 1930 is raised from synonymy with L. ovalis Bates, 1863 based on morphological and distributional data. In Acanthoderini, a new synonymy is proposed between Acanthoderes leucogaeus Erichson, 1847 and A. virescens Fuchs, 1962, while in Anisocerini, Tetrasarus lineatus Bréthes, 1920 (described in Acanthoderini) is here considered a junior synonym of Caciomorpha genalis (Aurivillius, 1908).

RESUMO

Coprophanaeus machadoi, species described based on a single male from Minas Gerais, was recently synonymized with C. saphirinus (Sturm, 1826). In this work, based on examination of more than 500 specimens from Brazilian Atlantic Forest, we introduce new evidence supporting the validity of C. machadoi, including differences in male pronotal ornamentation, in the form of the parameres, and in distribution. We also describe for the first time the female of C. machadoi and discuss the intraspecific color variation of C. saphirinus.

RESUMO

As defined here, Phanaeini comprises two subtribes, Gromphadina, with Gromphas and Oruscatus, and Phanaeina, with 10 genera including Bolbites. Gromphas occurs east of the Andes and includes five species: G aeruginosa (Perty, 1830) (= G lacordairei Blanchard, 1846); G amazonica Bates, 1870; G. dichroa Blanchard, 1846; G inermis Harold, 1869 (= G. lacordairii Burmeister, 1874; G. lacordairei bipunctata d'Olsoufieff, 1924, new synonymy); and G. lemoinei Waterhouse, 1891. Brullé (1837) never mentioned or described "G. larcordairei" and all citations to "G lacordairei Brullé" refer in fact to G. larcordairii Burmeister, ajunior objective synonym of G. inermis Harold. The first author to include species in Gromphas was Blanchard (1846), and one of these species, G. dichroa Blanchard, is here designated as the type species of Gromphas. Gromphas lemoinei Waterhouse is here revalidated and is distinguished from G. aeruginosa (Perty) mainly by the shape of the pronotal prominence. Lectotypes are designated for G. amazonica, G. inermis, and G. lacordairei bipunctata. Redescriptions of the genus and its species, an identification key and a distribution map are presented, as well illustrations of all species, including the type specimens of G. aeruginosa, G. lemoinei, and G. amazonica.

RESUMO

Coprophanaeus terrali, a species based on a single male from Sinop, Brazil, had its validity questioned recently when it was suggested that its tetratuberculate cephalic carina could be just an individual variation of C. dardanus (MacLeay, 1819). In this work, based on three additional males and two females collected near the type locality, we present new evidence supporting the validity of this species, discuss the variation of the male cephalic carina and describe the female morphology for the first time.
