RESUMO

The objective of this work was to assess the efficacy of different proteolytic agents on the bond strength of pit and fissure sealants to bovine enamel. Eighty-four bovine enamel specimens were randomly assigned in groups according to the pit and fissure sealant applied (HelioSeal F or Dyad Flow). Then, the specimens were subdivided according to the proteolytic agent used (n = 7): Group 1, distilled water (control); Group 2, 10 wt.% Tergazyme®; Group 3, 10 wt.% ZYME®; Group 4, 10% papain gel; Group 5, 10% bromelain gel; and Group 6, 5.25 wt.% sodium hypochlorite. The cell viability of the proteolytic solutions was assessed through the MTT assay. The proteolytic agents were applied on the enamel surface prior to the acid-etching procedure; then, the pit and fissure sealants were placed. The micro-shear bond strength was evaluated after 24 h or 6 months of water storing at 37 °C. Representative SEM images were taken for each experimental group. The bond strength data were statistically analyzed by a three-way ANOVA test using a significance level of α = 0.05. Bromelain and papain proteolytic solutions did not exert any cytotoxic effect on the human dental pulp cells. After 24 h and 6 months of aging, for both pit and fissure sealants, sodium hypochlorite, papain, bromelain, and Tergazyme® achieved statistically significant higher bond strength values (p < 0.05). Irrespective of the deproteinizing agent used, Dyad Flow resulted in a better bond strength after 6 months of aging. The type 1 etching pattern was identified for sodium hypochlorite, papain, and bromelain. Tergazyme®, papain, and bromelain demonstrated efficacy in deproteinizing enamel surfaces prior to acid etching, leading to the improved bond strength of pit and fissure sealants. Clinically, this suggests that these proteolytic agents can be considered viable alternatives to traditional methods for enhancing sealant retention and longevity. Utilizing these agents in dental practice could potentially reduce sealant failures.

In this study, we investigate the antibacterial effect of silver atoms implanted into a thin surface layer of titanium at low energies using an alternative ion plating technology called Diversified Ion Plating. Silver atoms were incorporated into titanium samples using reactive low-voltage ion plating at 2 keV and 4 keV. Surface modifications and morphology were evaluated using wettability, profilometry measurements, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. For a precise determination of the quantity and depth of implanted silver atoms on titanium surfaces, a combination of experimental techniques such as Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry along with Monte Carlo simulations were utilized. To assess the antibacterial effects of the silver atoms incorporated into pure titanium surfaces, bacterial suspension immersion tests were performed with a standard strain of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 12600). The outcomes indicate that titanium surfaces implanted with silver atoms were more effective in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus than pure titanium surfaces. Better results were found when the deposition was performed at 4 keV, indicating that a deeper implantation of silver, spanning a few nanometers, can result in a longer and more effective release of silver atoms. These findings suggest the potential for the development of new, cost-effective biomaterials, paving the way for improved implant materials in various health-related applications.

PURPOSE: To evaluate in situ the influence of sweat, oil, sunscreen, and disinfectant solution on the color stability, hardness, and roughness of elastomer for facial prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standardized and intrinsically pigmented specimens remained in contact with human skin from the same person for 30 days, considering exposures (n = 36 per group), absent of exposition (Control, C); sweat and oiliness contact (SO); sweat and oiliness associated with sunscreen (SOS); 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate immersion (CD0.12%); and all agents exposed (SOSCD). The main variables were color change (CIELab and National Standard Bureau system, NBS), Shore A hardness, and surface roughness, measured at baseline and 30 days. Qualitative analyses were performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis tests (color) and two-way ANOVA (hardness and roughness) with Sidak post-test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: CD0.12% (1.54 ± 0.49) and SOSCD (2.10 ± 1.03) had similar effects and caused the smallest color changes, considered mild and noticeable (NBS), respectively. SOS promoted the greatest color change (6.99 ± 1.43, NBS: large) and hardness (17.97 ± 0.56); SOS promoted intermediate roughness (3.48 ± 1.05) between SOSCD (2.25 ± 0.53), and two similar groups: C (4.46 ± 0.95), and CD0.12% (4.39 ± 1.26). The qualitative analysis showed an irregular, dense, dry, and whitish layer on the surface of the specimens exposed to sunscreen, which was reduced when in contact with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate. CONCLUSIONS: Endogenous and exogenous factors are capable of altering elastomer properties. The 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate minimized the changes caused by sweat, oil, and sunscreen.

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial properties, cell viability, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition capacity of several endodontic materials aimed at vital pulp therapy: Pro Root MTA®, EndoSequence®, Biodentine®, MTA Angelus®, TheraCal LC®, and BioC Repair®. The materials were prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. Antimicrobial tests were conducted using a microcosm biofilm model, cell viability was assessed using murine fibroblasts (L929), and MMP activity was analyzed through electrophoresis. The results showed that BioC Repair®, Biodentine®, and EndoSequence® exhibited similar antimicrobial properties, while MTA Angelus® and ProRoot MTA® had inferior results but were comparable to each other. In terms of cell viability, no significant differences were observed among the materials. EndoSequence® demonstrated the highest MMP inhibition capacity. In conclusion, BioC Repair®, Biodentine®, EndoSequence®, and TheraCal® showed better antimicrobial properties among the tested materials. The materials did not exhibit significant differences in terms of cytotoxicity. However, EndoSequence® displayed superior MMP inhibition capacity.

RESULTS: Fuji II LC was found to have the highest degree of conversion, water sorption, and microleakage, as well as the lowest flexural strength. Cention N had the highest solubility; when used with an adhesive system, it achieved bond strength and microleakage similar to those of the Tetric N Ceram composite. Tetric N Ceram had the highest degree of conversion, KHN ratio, and radiopacity. Conclusion: The properties of Cention N validate its efficacy as an alternative direct restorative material when used in conjunction with an adhesive system.

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and physicochemical properties of a novel dual-cure endodontic sealer containing copaiba oil. The copaiba oil was obtained and characterized by gas chromatography (GC), and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was performed. The experimental sealers were formulated with copaiba oil concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, and 2%, and the RealSeal™ (Sybron endo, Orange, USA) and AH Plus (Dentsply De Trey Gmbh, Konstanz, Germany) were used as the commercial references. The antimicrobial activity of the sealers was evaluated by the direct contact test for 1h and 24h. To evaluate the physicochemical properties of the sealers, the degree of conversion, setting time, film thickness, dimensional stability, and radiopacity tests were performed. The data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Concerning the results, the sealers containing copaiba oil showed antimicrobial activity without harming the physicochemical properties.

Introducción: La fijación de las restauraciones indirectas es uno de los pasos más importantes, para conseguir una adecuada retención y sellado de la interfase entre el material restaurador y el diente. Objetivo: Evaluar la resistencia de unión al cizallamiento de diferentes agentes de fijación a dos aleaciones metálicas utilizadas en odontología. Métodos: Estudio experimental in vitro. Cien especímenes de aleaciones de metales base, 50 de níquel-cromo y 50 de níquel-cromo-titanio fueron preparados y divididos de manera aleatoria en 5 grupos. Esta división se realizó acorde con el agente de fijación utilizado: sistema autograbante de dos pasos (Clearfil SE Bond; CSB), sistema adhesivo universal (Single Bond Universal; SBU), cemento resinoso autoadhesivo (Maxcem Elite; ME), ionómero de vidrio (IV) y fosfato de zinc (ZnPO). Posteriormente a la aplicación de cada agente de fijación, los especímenes tratados fueron almacenados en agua destilada por 24 h a 37 ºC y sometidos a un ensayo de resistencia de unión al cizallamiento. Resultados: La resistencia de unión al cizallamiento fue influenciada significativamente por el tipo de agente de fijación (p = 0,002) y el tipo de aleación utilizada (p < 0,001). La resistencia de unión al cizallamiento fue mayor, al utilizar el sistema Clearfil SE Bond, seguida de Single Bond Universal; las diferencias entre Maxcem Elite y el Fosfato de zinc no fueron significativas. Finalmente, el IV no mostró adhesión a ninguna de las aleaciones metálicas utilizadas. Conclusiones: El uso de Clearfil SE Bond aumentó la resistencia de unión de los cementos resinosos a las aleaciones metálicas(AU)


Introduction: The bonding of indirect restorations is one of the most important steps, in order to achieve adequate retention and sealing of the interface between the restorative material and the tooth. Objective: To evaluate the shear bond strength of different bonding agents to two metal alloys used in dentistry. Methods: In vitro experimental study. One hundred specimens of base metal alloys, 50 nickel-chromium and 50 nickel-chromium-titanium were prepared and randomly divided into 5 groups. This division was made according to the bonding agent used: two-step self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond; CSB), universal adhesive system (Single Bond Universal; SBU), self-adhesive resin cement (Maxcem Elite; ME), glass ionomer (IV) and zinc phosphate (ZnPO). After the application of each bonding agent, the treated specimens were stored in distilled water for 24 hr at 37 ºC and subjected to a shear bond strength test. Results: Shear bond strength was significantly influenced by the type of bonding agent (p = 0.002) and the type of alloy used (p < 0.001). Shear bond strength was highest when using the Clearfil SE Bond system, followed by Single Bond Universal; the differences between Maxcem Elite and Zinc Phosphate were not significant. Finally, IV did not show adhesion to any of the metal alloys used. Conclusions: The use of Clearfil SE Bond increased the bond strength of resinous cements to metallic alloys(AU)

OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinical performance of light-cured calcium silicate-based cement for direct or indirect pulp capping. The research question was as follows: in teeth with deep caries lesions, does the use of resin-modified calcium silicate-containing composites improve the radiological success and prevent irreversible pulpitis and pulpal necrosis compared with other pulp-capping agents? MATERIALS AND METHODS: The following databases were screened until September 2021: PubMed, Web of Science, Scielo, Scopus, Embase, and The Cochrane Library. Randomized clinical trials reporting the clinical evaluation of a resin-modified calcium silicate material as an agent for pulp therapy were included. Meta-analysis was performed using the Rev Manager v5.4.1 software. The risk difference and 95% confidence interval of the dichotomous outcome (restoration failure or success) were calculated for comparison. RESULTS: Ten studies were considered for qualitative analysis and meta-analysis. Studies evaluating the performance of light-cured calcium silicate-based cement from 1 month to a maximum follow-up period of 36 months and comparing it with the performance of CaOH, mineral trioxide aggregate, or Biodentine were included. In the global analysis for direct pulp capping at 6-month follow-up, no statistical differences were observed between the experimental group using the light-cured calcium silicate-based cement and control group (P = .28). However, at 12-month follow-up, global analysis favored the control group (P < .001). For indirect pulp capping, at 6- and 24-month follow-ups, no statistically significant differences were observed between the experimental and control groups (P = .88; P = .21). CONCLUSIONS: Light-cured calcium silicate-based cement showed a limited clinical performance as a direct pulp capping agent, especially when evaluated in the long term. However, using it as an indirect pulp capping agent may be a reliable and easy-to-use option for restoring teeth with deep caries. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This systematic review provides evidence that supports the use of light-cured calcium silicate-based cement as an indirect pulp capping agent.

Abstract Bruxism is the repetitive muscle-mandibular behavior characterized by clenching and/or grinding of the teeth, which reflects the presence of one or more underlying conditions or factors. The objective of this descriptive study was to determine the association between bruxism and stress self-perceived during the pandemic, as well as their frequency by gender and academic area. An interrogation and self-perceived stress scale PSS-14 were applied to students from the different areas of the Institute of Health Sciences (ICSa) to determine the presence or absence of stress and bruxism symptom, a Chi-square was used for the comparison between variables, considering a value of p0.005. ICSa students between 18 and 24 age perceive symptoms of bruxism and high levels of stress caused during the pandemic.


Resumen El bruxismo es el comportamiento músculo-mandibular repetitivo caracterizado por apretamiento y/o rechinamiento de los dientes, que refleja la presencia de una o varias condiciones o factores subyacentes. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo con el objetivo de determinar la asociación del nivel de estrés y síntomas de bruxismo autopercibidos durante la pandemia, así como su frecuencia por género y área académica. Se aplicó un interrogatorio y escala de estrés percibido PSS-14 a los estudiantes de las distintas áreas del Instituto de Ciencias de la Salud (ICSa) para determinar la presencia o ausencia de estrés y síntomas de bruxismo, se utilizó una Chi-cuadrada para la comparación entre variables, considerando significativo un valor de p0.0001. Los estudiantes de 18 a 24 años de edad del ICSa perciben síntomas de bruxismo y altos niveles de estrés originados durante la pandemia.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incorporation of repairing capsules containing different monomers and polymerization modulators on the self-healing efficiency of an experimental photopolymerizable resin-based composite. METHODS: Self-healing capsules containing different monomers and polymerization modulators were prepared by emulsion polymerization: TCDHEPT (TEGDMA and DHEPT), BTCDHEPT (Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, and DHEPT), and BTCBPO (Bis-GMA, TEGDMA, and BPO). The capsules were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The capsules were added into experimental photopolymerizable resin composites establishing the following groups: ER (Control without capsules), ER+BPO, ER+BPO+TCDHEPT, and ER+BTCBPO+BTCDHEPT. Filtek Z350 resin composite (3 M ESPE) was used as a commercial reference. The materials were tested for degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (σf), elastic modulus (Ef), fracture toughness (virgin KIC), self-healing efficiency (healed KIC), and roughness. For statistical analysis, the significance value was established at an a = 0.05 level. RESULTS: When compared to the control material, the incorporation of repairing capsules did not affect DC, σf, and Ef. Fracture toughness was statistically similar between the experimental groups (p ≤ 0.05). Healed KIC was statistically different between the groups ER+TCDHEP and ER+BTCBPO+BTCDHEPT; the self-healing efficiency was higher for ER+TCDHEPT. Surface roughness was statistically similar among all groups. CONCLUSIONS: The use of self-healing capsules promoted repair of the material. Studies with material aging after the self-healing process are necessary to better demonstrate the effectiveness of this system. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The self-healing system seemed to be a promising technology to be used in self-repaired restorative materials, which may prevent restoration fractures.

The sealing and bonding characteristics of luting cements may be affected by the application of desensitizers containing ingredients that induce chemical interaction with dentin organic matrix. This study evaluated the effect of different desensitizers on the immediate and long-term shear bond strength (SBS) of a self-adhesive resin cement (SARC) to dentin. Healthy bovine dentin specimens were used for the study. Gluma® Desensitizer, Desensibilize Nano P®, and Soothe® desensitizer were used in study groups, while the control group did not receive any treatment. Next, SARC (RelyXTM U200) in cylindrical mold was applied to the sample surface. All specimens were stored at 37 °C for 24 h or six months and tested for SBS. Additionally, water contact angle was measured using an optical tensiometer. Results were analyzed by analysis of variance and Student-t tests (p ˂ 0.05). Application of the different types of desensitizers had no significant influence on immediate or long-term SBS of SARC to dentin (p > 0.05). Differences for water contact angle were not statistically significant among the tested groups (p = 0.450). Within the limitations of the present study, it can be concluded that the application of the different types of desensitizers had no significant influence on the SBS of a SARC to dentin.

The objective of this study was to formulate an experimental light-cured periodontal dressing containing alpha-humulene and to compare its physical, antimicrobial, and cytotoxicity properties with commercial gold standards (Barricaid® and Periobond®). Two periodontal dressing formulations were developed (a and b). The formulations were divided into 5 groups according to the alpha-humulene concentration as follows: Ea - control group, Ea1 - 1%, Ea5 - 5%, Ea10 - 10%, and Ea20 - 20%; Eb - control group, Eb1 - 1%, Eb5 - 5%, Eb10 - 10%, and Eb20 - 20%. Materials characterization was performed using the degree of conversion, cohesive strength, sorption, and solubility assays. Antimicrobial assay was performed using the modified direct contact test against E. faecalis and S. aureus. Cytotoxicity was assessed by the cell viability experiment using L929 fibroblasts. In general, the cohesive strength values of materials decreased as the alpha-humulene concentration increased. All the experimental dressings showed antimicrobial activity against both bacteria tested. Cell viability results for the Ea, Ea1, Eb, and Eb1 groups showed moderate cytotoxic effect. The formulations containing alpha-humulene showed similar behavior to the commercial references. Thus, formulations containing alpha-humulene have potential to be used as periodontal dressing.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of irradiance and radiant exposure on the chemical-mechanical properties of a resin composite. A micro-hybrid resin composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) was investigated under two different irradiances: low (300 mW/cm2) and high (800 mW/cm2) and radiant exposures: 8 and 16 J/cm2. Four groups, named Low 8 J/cm2, High 8 J/cm2, Low 16 J/cm2, and High 16 J/cm2 were tested, and their flexural strengths, elastic moduli, depths of cure, and degrees of conversion were evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. A multiple linear regression model was used to correlate the irradiance and radiant exposure with dependent variables (α = 0.05). Irradiance and radiant exposure were found statistically significant for all dependent variables. The interaction between the factors was statistically significant only for the degree of conversion and elastic modulus. Group Low 16 J/cm2 exhibited a significantly superior performance in all the evaluated properties. Barring the degree of conversion, no significant differences were observed among the properties evaluated between the Low 8 J/cm2 and High 8 J/cm2 groups. The adjusted R2 values were high for the depth of cure and degree of conversion (0.58 and 0.96, respectively). Both irradiance and radiant exposure parameters play an important role in establishing the final properties of a micro-hybrid resin composite. This study sought to evaluate the physical and antimicrobial properties of a thermopolymerizable acrylic resin (PMMA) modified with metallic methacrylate monomers -zirconia (ZM), tin (TM), and di-n-butyl (DNTMB) methacrylates. Color stability was evaluated before and after immersion of samples in a staining solution by a digital spectrophotometer. The mechanical brushing test was evaluated by the roughness test. The flexural strength test used a mechanical testing machine. Human keratinocytes were used to assess cell viability and the biofilm formation assay was carried out for 5 days, in a microcosms model after one year of specimen storage. For statistical analysis, the method chosen was based on adherence to the normal distribution model and equality of variances (p < 0.05). The addition of DNTMB to PMMA promoted great antimicrobial action, acceptable cytocompatibility, without hampering the physical-mechanical properties of the commercial material. Introducción: Las diferencias en las propiedades mecánicas de los materiales cerámicos y a base de resina plantean la interrogante sobre cuál puede tener un mejor desempeño a largo plazo. Objetivos: Evaluar la resistencia flexural y estabilidad de color de diferentes materiales restauradores estéticos indirectos. Métodos: Los materiales seleccionados fueron Filtek™ Z250 XT (3M ESPE), Ceramage (SHOFU Dental), VITA VM® LC y VITA ENAMIC® (VITA Zahnfabrik), IPS e.max® (Ivoclar-Vivadent) y Zolid FX (Amann Girrbach AG). El ensayo de resistencia flexural (n = 10) fue realizado en una máquina universal de ensayos mecánicos. Las lecturas de color (n = 5) se midieron en un espectrofotómetro VITA Easyshade V®. Resultados: Los materiales totalmente cerámicos mostraron un mejor desempeño mecánico (p < 0,001). Los resultados de estabilidad de color muestran que Ceramage, IPS e.max® y Zolid FX, mostraron una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p ≤ 0,002) con Filtek Z250 XT, VITA VM® LC y VITA ENAMIC®. Conclusiones: Los materiales totalmente cerámicos presentaron una mayor resistencia flexural y estabilidad de color que los materiales de base polimérica. A pesar de ello, los materiales estéticos indirectos con polímeros en su composición, como Ceramage, se presentan como una alternativa válida, ya que además de tener propiedades mecánicas adecuadas, poseen una estabilidad de color semejante a los materiales cerámicos(AU)


Introduction: Differences in the mechanical properties of ceramic and resin-based materials pose the question of which of the two will perform better in the long run. Objectives: Evaluate the flexural resistance and color stability of different indirect esthetic restorative materials. Methods: The materials selected were Filtek™ Z250 XT (3M ESPE), Ceramage (SHOFU Dental), VITA VM® LC and VITA ENAMIC® (VITA Zahnfabrik), IPS e.max® (Ivoclar-Vivadent) and Zolid FX (Amann Girrbach AG). The flexural resistance assay (n = 10) was conducted in a universal mechanical testing machine. Color readings (n = 5) were taken with a VITA Easyshade V® spectrophotometer. Results: All-ceramic materials had better mechanical performance (p < 0.001). Color stability results show that Ceramage, IPS e.max® and Zolid FX displayed a statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0.002) with respect to Filtek Z250 XT, VITA VM® LC and VITA ENAMIC®. Conclusions: All-ceramic materials exhibited greater flexural resistance and color stability than polymer-based materials. However, indirect esthetic materials with polymers in their composition, such as Ceramage, are presented as a valid alternative, due to their appropriate mechanical properties and their color stability, which is similar to that of ceramic materials(AU)

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although the clinical use of self-adhesive flowable composite resins is convenient, the decision to use flowable or conventional composite resin remains controversial. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the in vitro bond strength of self-adhesive flowable composite resins to enamel or dentin compared with conventional composite resins using etch-and-rinse or self-etch adhesive systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two independent reviewers performed searches in the PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Wiley, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for studies reporting on the bond strength of self-adhesive flowable and conventional composite resins to enamel and dentin published from January 2010 up to September 2020. A meta-analysis software program was used for the meta-analysis. Comparisons were conducted using standardized mean differences considering the random-effects model (α=.05). RESULTS: Twenty-two studies were considered for the meta-analysis. Immediate and long-term bond strength to enamel was improved when a conventional composite resin was used in combination with an adhesive system (P<.001). Bond strength to dentin was improved by using an adhesive system in combination with a conventional composite resin (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: The bond strength of self-adhesive flowable composite resins is lower than that of conventional composite resins, indicating limited ability to bond to enamel and dentin.

Abstract The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of irradiance and radiant exposure on the chemical-mechanical properties of a resin composite. A micro-hybrid resin composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) was investigated under two different irradiances: low (300 mW/cm2) and high (800 mW/cm2) and radiant exposures: 8 and 16 J/cm2. Four groups, named Low 8 J/cm2, High 8 J/cm2, Low 16 J/cm2, and High 16 J/cm2 were tested, and their flexural strengths, elastic moduli, depths of cure, and degrees of conversion were evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. A multiple linear regression model was used to correlate the irradiance and radiant exposure with dependent variables (α = 0.05). Irradiance and radiant exposure were found statistically significant for all dependent variables. The interaction between the factors was statistically significant only for the degree of conversion and elastic modulus. Group Low 16 J/cm2 exhibited a significantly superior performance in all the evaluated properties. Barring the degree of conversion, no significant differences were observed among the properties evaluated between the Low 8 J/cm2 and High 8 J/cm2 groups. The adjusted R2 values were high for the depth of cure and degree of conversion (0.58 and 0.96, respectively). Both irradiance and radiant exposure parameters play an important role in establishing the final properties of a micro-hybrid resin composite. Irradiance has a greater influence under higher radiant exposures.

Abstract The objective of this study was to formulate an experimental light-cured periodontal dressing containing alpha-humulene and to compare its physical, antimicrobial, and cytotoxicity properties with commercial gold standards (Barricaid® and Periobond®). Two periodontal dressing formulations were developed (a and b). The formulations were divided into 5 groups according to the alpha-humulene concentration as follows: Ea - control group, Ea1 - 1%, Ea5 - 5%, Ea10 - 10%, and Ea20 - 20%; Eb - control group, Eb1 - 1%, Eb5 - 5%, Eb10 - 10%, and Eb20 - 20%. Materials characterization was performed using the degree of conversion, cohesive strength, sorption, and solubility assays. Antimicrobial assay was performed using the modified direct contact test against E. faecalis and S. aureus. Cytotoxicity was assessed by the cell viability experiment using L929 fibroblasts. In general, the cohesive strength values of materials decreased as the alpha-humulene concentration increased. All the experimental dressings showed antimicrobial activity against both bacteria tested. Cell viability results for the Ea, Ea1, Eb, and Eb1 groups showed moderate cytotoxic effect. The formulations containing alpha-humulene showed similar behavior to the commercial references. Thus, formulations containing alpha-humulene have potential to be used as periodontal dressing.

Debonding of orthodontic brackets is a common occurrence during orthodontic treatment. Therefore, the best option for treating debonded brackets should be indicated. This study aimed to evaluate the bond strength of rebonded brackets after different residual adhesive removal methods. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, SciELO, Scopus, LILACS, IBECS, and BVS databases were screened up to December 2020. Bond strength comparisons were made considering the method used for removing the residual adhesive on the bracket base. A total of 12 studies were included for the meta-analysis. Four different adhesive removal methods were identified: sandblasting, laser, mechanical grinding, and direct flame. When compared with new orthodontic metallic brackets, bond strength of debonded brackets after air abrasion (p = 0.006), mechanical grinding (p = 0.007), and direct flame (p < 0.001) was significantly lower. The use of an erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser showed similar shear bond strength (SBS) values when compared with those of new orthodontic brackets (p = 0.71). The Er:YAG laser could be considered an optimal method for promoting the bond of debonded orthodontic brackets. Direct flame, mechanical grinding, or sandblasting are also suitable, obtaining clinically acceptable bond strength values.
