RESUMO

In the present study, the characteristics of leachate generated from dumpsite called 'Zapote' located in southern region of Tamaulipas, Mexico were evaluated. The adsorption of non-biodegradable organic matter measured as chemical oxygen demand (COD), color and heavy metals from leachate on activated carbon (AC) prepared in acid media from Guadua amplexifolia bamboo has been studied. In addition, the computation of kinetic parameters during the adsorption process as well as the most probable mechanisms was determined. The ACs were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The experimental data showed that the ACs removed up to 81.4% of color and reduced COD up to 91.6% after 9 h of reaction at 60°C. For heavy metals, the maximum adsorption uptake was achieved at pH = 8.0 within 20 min with removal percentages of 87.0% (Pb(II)), 43.0% (Cu(II)) and 30.5% (Ni(II)). A pseudo-second-order model explained the adsorption kinetics most effectively for Pb, Ni and Cu, while a pseudo-first order was found for Zn. The AC synthesized from the G. amplexifolia species could be potentially used as an effective adsorbent in the reduction of COD, and removal of color and heavy metals.

RESUMO

The modification of the starches extracted from rice beans both with and without hydrothermal treatment was evaluated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy. SEM indicated that the starch granules of rice beans exhibit wide variation in granule shape, showing the greatest size and modification of the surface when extracted with ethanol. It was found that the extraction solvent had no significant effect on the onset (To) and peak (Tp) temperatures of the starch, whereas hydrothermal treatment of rice beans decreased the To, Tp and ΔH of the starch. The modification of FT-IR spectra showed that hydrothermal treatment of rice beans and the solvent used in the extraction of starch affected starch crystallinity, mainly when ethanol was used. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the smaller changes in the starch bonds were due to the solvent used for starch extraction but that hydrothermal treatment disturbed all bonds in the starch.

RESUMO

Toxic compounds, such as 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), which is a common pollutant in wastewater, are removed efficiently from sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) by microorganisms. The bacterial community in aerobic granules formed during the removal of 4-CP in a SBR was monitored for 63days. The SBR reactor was operated with a constant filling and withdrawal time of 7 and 8min and decreasing settling time (30, 5, 3 and 2min) to induce the formation of aerobic granules. During the acclimation period lasting 15days (30min settling time) had a strong effect on the bacterial community. From day 18 onwards, Sphingobium and Comamonadaceae were detected. Rhizobiaceae were dominant from day 24 to day 28 when stable aerobic granules were formed. At day 35, fluffy granules were formed, but the bacterial community structure did not change, despite the changes in the reactor operation to inhibit filamentous bacteria growth. This is the first report on changes in the bacterial community structure of aerobic and fluffy granules during granulation process in a reactor fed with 4-CP and the prediction of its metabolic pathways.
