RESUMO

We report a systematic molecular design in BF2bdk-based afterglow emitters with photoluminescence quantum yields up to 46.3% and lifetimes around 1 s. Suitable excited-state types, diverse excited state species, relatively small singlet-triplet energy gaps and strong dipole-dipole interactions are critical in determining the afterglow properties.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an aging-associated disease characterized by joint stiffness pain and destroyed articular cartilage. Traditional treatments for OA are limited to alleviating various OA symptoms. There is a lack of drugs available in clinical practice that can truly repair cartilage damage. Here, we developed the chondroitin sulfate analog CS-semi5, semi-synthesized from chondroitin sulfate A. In vivo, CS-semi5 alleviated inflammation, provided analgesic effects, and protected cartilage in the modified Hulth OA rat model and papain-induced OA rat model. A bioinformatics analysis was performed on samples from OA patients and an exosome analysis on papain-induced OA rats, revealing miR-122-5p as the key regulator associated with CS-semi5 in OA treatment. Binding prediction revealed that miR-122-5p acted on the 3'-untranslated region of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, which was related to MMP13 regulation. Subsequent in vitro experiments revealed that CS-semi5 effectively reduced cartilage degeneration and maintained matrix homeostasis by inhibiting matrix breakdown through the miR-122-5p/p38/MMP13 axis, which was further validated in the articular cartilage of OA rats. This is the first study to investigate the semi-synthesized chondroitin sulfate CS-semi5, revealing its cartilage-protecting, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties that show promising therapeutic effects in OA via the miR-122-5p/p38/MMP13 pathway.

Although hypertension is highly prevalent among the elderly and significantly contributes to cardiovascular disease risk, studies focusing on male elderly individuals over 85 years old are relatively scarce. This study aimed to investigate ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) characteristics in male hypertensive patients aged over 85 years. These included demographic characteristics, antihypertensive drug use, 24-h ABPM values, diabetes, coronary heart disease, sleep disorders, smoking history, and drinking history, and the differences in ABPM between the age groups over and under 85 years old were analyzed. A total of 585 elderly hypertensive patients were included. The mean systolic blood pressure in individuals aged over 85 years was significantly greater throughout the day (131.57 ± 12.52 mmHg vs. 123.75 ± 2.74 mmHg, p < .001). In the 85 years older age group, the nighttime variability coefficient of SBP was lower at 7.84 ± 2.9 than the under 85 years age group 8.92 ± 3.13 (p < .001). The 85 years older age group age group presented a significantly greater whole-day systolic blood pressure standard deviation of ABPM (13.2 ± 3.19 vs. 12.47 ± 3.05, p = .005) compared with those under the age of 85 years. In the 85 years older age group, the proportion of individuals with the reverse dipper pattern was higher (48.15% vs. 38.31%, p = .017) than under 85 years age group. This study revealed that elderly male hypertensive patients aged over 85 years presented elevated average blood pressure levels. The research investigated ABPM characteristics. Older hypertensive individuals are more likely to have a reverse-dipper blood pressure pattern.

Homologous recombination (HR) is essential for the maintenance of genome stability. During HR, Replication Protein A (RPA) rapidly coats the 3'-tailed single-strand DNA (ssDNA) generated by end resection. Then, the ssDNA-bound RPA must be timely replaced by Rad51 recombinase to form Rad51 nucleoprotein filaments that drive homology search and HR repair. How cells regulate Rad51 assembly dynamics and coordinate RPA and Rad51 actions to ensure proper HR remains poorly understood. Here, we identified that Rtt105, a Ty1 transposon regulator, acts to stimulate Rad51 assembly and orchestrate RPA and Rad51 actions during HR. We found that Rtt105 interacts with Rad51 in vitro and in vivo and restrains the adenosine 5' triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis activity of Rad51. We showed that Rtt105 directly stimulates dynamic Rad51-ssDNA assembly, strand exchange, and D-loop formation in vitro. Notably, we found that Rtt105 physically regulates the binding of Rad51 and RPA to ssDNA via different motifs and that both regulations are necessary and epistatic in promoting Rad51 nucleation, strand exchange, and HR repair. Consequently, disrupting either of the interactions impaired HR and conferred DNA damage sensitivity, underscoring the importance of Rtt105 in orchestrating the actions of Rad51 and RPA. Our work reveals additional layers of mechanisms regulating Rad51 filament dynamics and the coordination of HR.

Relaxor ferroelectrics are highly desired for pulse-power dielectric capacitors, however it has become a bottleneck that substantial enhancements of energy density generally sacrifice energy efficiency under superhigh fields. Here, we demonstrate a novel concept of highly polarizable concentrated dipole glass in delicately-designed high-entropy (Bi1/3Ba1/3Na1/3)(Fe2/9Ti5/9Nb2/9)O3 ceramic achieved via substitution of multiple heterovalent ferroelectric-active principal cation species on equivalent lattice sites. The atomic-scaled polar heterogeneity of dipoles with different polar vectors between adjacent unit cells enables diffuse reorientation process but disables appreciable growth with electric fields. These unique features cause superior recoverable energy density of ~15.9 J cm-3 and efficiency of ~93.3% in bulk ceramics. We also extend the highly polarizable concentrated dipole glass to the prototype multilayer ceramic capacitor, which exhibits record-breaking recoverable energy density of ~26.3 J cm-3 and efficiency of ~92.4% with excellent temperature and cycle stability. This research presents a distinctive approach for designing high-performance energy-storage dielectric capacitors.

Pyrazines are important flavor components and healthy active components in Baijiu, which including tetramethylpyrazine (TTMP). During the brewing process, the traceability of microbial communities and the content distribution characteristics of TTMP are important for improving the quality and style characteristics of compound-flavored Baijiu (CFB). However, the traceability analysis of microorganisms in fermented grains (FG)-used in the production of CFB-lacks quantitative and systematic evaluation. In this study, the microbial communities and TTMP content of Jiuqu (JQ), Liangpei (LP), FG, and pit mud (CP) used in CFB production were characterized; further, coordinate and discriminant analyses were employed to determine differences in microbial communities. Additionally, traceability and correlation analyses were performed to reveal the origin of microbial communities in FG. The source, content, and distribution characteristics of TTMP based on the brewing process have also been discussed. The results showed that most of the bacterial and fungal communities at different levels of FG came from other sources, and the microorganisms of Cladosporium, Acetobacter, Aspergillus, Methanosarcina, and Bacillus were considered have a osculating correlations with TTMP content of FG. Taken together, this study provides insights into the origin of microbial communities in FG and the distribution characteristics of TTMP based on the CFB brewing process. The current findings are conducive for optimizing the fermentation process and improving the quality and style characteristics of CFB.

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and afterglow materials hold great potential for various applications, but there remain inherent trade-offs between the afterglow efficiency and the lifetime. Here, we propose a dual-mechanism design strategy, leveraging the RTP or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) mechanism for a high afterglow efficiency and the organic long-persistent luminescence (OLPL) mechanism for a prolonged afterglow duration. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-type difluoroboron ß-diketonate molecules with a large S1 dipole moment are doped as the luminescent component into the organic matrix with a large dipole moment, and a series of TADF-type afterglow materials can be achieved with an afterglow efficiency of up to 88.7% and an afterglow lifetime of 200 ms. To prolong the afterglow duration, an electron donor is introduced as the third component to generate traps and facilitate charge separation. The obtained materials exhibit a dual afterglow mechanism, first exhibiting a TADF/RTP afterglow with an afterglow efficiency of up to 50.9%, followed by an hours-long OLPL afterglow emission with an afterglow efficiency of up to 13.1%. Further investigations reveal that an appropriate heavy-atom effect can facilitate the intersystem crossing process, which can promote the charge separation process and thus improve the OLPL afterglow performance. Additionally, rare-earth upconversion materials are introduced into OLPL materials to enable their near-infrared excitation properties, showcasing their potential applications in bioimaging.

Drawing inspiration from the jumping mechanisms of insects (e.g., click beetles), bistable structures can convert slow deformations of soft actuating material into fast jumping motions (i.e., power amplification). However, bistable jumpers often encounter large energy barriers for energy release/re-storage, posing a challenge in achieving multimodal (i.e., height/distance) and continuous jumps at the insect scale (body length under 20 mm). Here, a new offset-buckling bistable design is introduced that features antisymmetric equilibrium states and tunable energy barriers. Leveraging this design, a Boundary Actuation Tunable Energy-barrier (BATE) jumper (body length down to 15 mm) is developed, and transform BATE jumper from height-jump mode (up to 12.7 body lengths) to distance-jump mode (up to 20 body lengths). BATE jumpers can perform agile continuous jumping (within 300 ms for energy release/re-storage times) and real-time status detection is further demonstrated. This insect-level performance of the proposed BATE jumper showcases its potential toward future applications in exploration, search, and rescue.

BACKGROUND: The association of different body components, including lean mass and body fat, with the risk of death in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients are unclear. METHODS: We enrolled adults diagnosed with ACS at our center between January 2011 and December 2012 and obtained follow-up outcomes via telephone questionnaires. We used restricted cubic splines (RCS) with the Cox proportional hazards model to analyze the associations between body mass index (BMI), predicted lean mass index (LMI), predicted body fat percentage (BF), and the value of LMI/BF with 10-year mortality. We also examined the secondary outcome of death during hospitalization. RESULTS: During the maximum 10-year follow-up of 1398 patients, 331 deaths (23.6%) occurred, and a U-shaped relationship was found between BMI and death risk (P nonlinearity = 0.03). After adjusting for age and history of diabetes, the overweight group (24 ≤ BMI < 28 kg/m2) had the lowest mortality (HR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.29-0.99). Predicted LMI and LMI/BF had an inverse linear relationship with a 10-year death risk (P nonlinearity = 0.24 and P nonlinearity = 0.38, respectively), while an increase in BF was associated with increased mortality (P nonlinearity = 0.64). During hospitalization, 31 deaths (2.2%) were recorded, and the associations of the indicators with in-hospital mortality were consistent with the long-term outcome analyses. CONCLUSION: Our study provides new insight into the "obesity paradox" in ACS patients, highlighting the importance of considering body composition heterogeneity. Predicted LMI and BF may serve as useful tools for assessing nutritional status and predicting the prognosis of ACS, based on their linear associations with all-cause mortality.

BACKGROUND: The accurate selection of patients likely to respond to renal denervation (RDN) is crucial for optimizing treatment outcomes in patients with hypertension. This systematic review was designed to evaluate patient-specific factors predicting the RDN response. METHODS AND RESULTS: We focused on individuals with hypertension who underwent RDN. Patients were categorized based on their baseline characteristics. The primary outcome was blood pressure (BP) reduction after RDN. Both randomized controlled trials and nonrandomized studies were included. We assessed the risk of bias using corresponding tools and further employed the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach to assess the overall quality of evidence. A total of 50 studies were ultimately included in this systematic review, among which 17 studies were for meta-analysis. Higher baseline heart rate and lower pulse wave velocity were shown to be associated with significant antihypertensive efficacy of RDN on 24-hour systolic BP reduction (weighted mean difference, -4.05 [95% CI, -7.33 to -0.77]; weighted mean difference, -7.20 [95% CI, -9.79 to -4.62], respectively). In addition, based on qualitative analysis, higher baseline BP, orthostatic hypertension, impaired baroreflex sensitivity, and several biomarkers are also reported to be associated with significant BP reduction after RDN. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with hypertension treated with the RDN, higher heart rate, and lower pulse wave velocity were associated with significant BP reduction after RDN. Other factors, including higher baseline BP, hypertensive patients with orthostatic hypertension, BP variability, impaired cardiac baroreflex sensitivity, and some biomarkers are also reported to be associated with a better BP response to RDN.

The vertical motion configuration is a common design in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for energy harvesting; however, the performance optimization and comparison are still vague between various vertical motion-based structures. In this paper, time-averaged power density is defined as a metric to compare the power output performances of vertically structured TENGs, including contact mode and freestanding mode. To ensure comparisons under the same circumstances, a novel sandwich-structured dielectric layer was designed to maintain a stable and consistent surface charge density, with an extra rotating triboelectric nanogenerator working as a charge pump. We also investigated the impact of parasitic capacitance, which is a primary source of error in theoretical optimization. The freestanding TENG (FTENG) with a single dielectric layer demonstrates superior power performance, even when accounting for the influence of parasitic capacitance. This work provides valuable insights and guidelines for the design of high-performance mechanical energy harvesting devices.

Background: Identifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is critical for effective prevention and management. While classic CVD risk factors have been extensively studied, there is a scarcity of research on the association between snoring and CVD risk, particularly in the context of sex differences. Methods: This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2015 and 2020. Participants were initially categorized based on the severity of snoring or the presence of snoring.Within the snoring group, they were further classified by sex. Analysis was carried out using multivariate logistic regression. Results: Our study included 12,681 participants aged 18 years or older. When compared to the non-snoring group, individuals in the moderate snoring group had a higher odds ratio (OR) of 1.418 (95% CI 1.083 to 1.857, p = 0.011), while those in the severe snoring group had a higher OR of 1.882 (95% CI 1.468 to 2.409, p < 0.001). In the snoring group, individuals were further categorized by gender: 4527 males and 4131 females. Importantly, male patients showed a higher OR for atrial fibrillation (4.945, 95% CI 1.187 to 20.598, p = 0.028) compared to females. Additionally, male patients had a higher OR for coronary heart disease (2.002, 95% CI 1.152 to 3.479, p = 0.014) compared to females. Conclusion: Sex plays a significant role in the relationship between snoring and CVD risk. Males with snoring have a higher risk of developing CVD compared to females. In particular, male snorers are nearly five times more likely to develop atrial fibrillation and about twice as likely to experience coronary artery disease in comparison to female snorers. It is recommended that healthcare providers and public health officials prioritize cardiovascular risk assessments for male individuals who exhibit symptoms of snoring.

Objective: Evaluating changes over time in the odds of obesity according to sex. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Database were searched for relevant studies. Full-text studies evaluating the influence of sex on obesity were analyzed. We used R 3.4.3 to assess the impact of results in the selected studies, calculated pooled prevalence and odds ratio (OR) with their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). P<0.10 and I2>50% indicated high heterogeneity, and the random-effects model was used, otherwise, the fixed-effects model was used. Results: The included studies reported the prevalence of obesity in children covering 1987-2017 intervals. The pooled prevalence of obesity in boy and girl groups were 0.13 (95% CI: 0.08, 0.20) and 0.10 (95% CI: 0.07, 0.13). In the analysis of the boy group, the pooled OR in earlier time (1987-2013) vs. recent time (2011-2017) was 0.98 (95% CI: 0.76, 1.26). The estimated OR for girls in earlier vs. recent time was 1.01 (95% CI: 0.80, 1.28). In the analysis of studies with follow-up period ≥ 10 years, the pooled OR for obesity in earlier vs. recent time period was 0.99 (95% CI: 0.76, 1.30). For those with follow-up period < 10 years, the pooled OR in earlier vs. recent time period was 0.94 (95% CI: 0.57, 1.54). Conclusions: Comprehensive measurements are required to control obesity among children albeit with nonsignificant gender difference and time trend for obesity rates in children.

Histone H3 Lys36 (H3K36) methylation and its associated modifiers are crucial for DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair, but the mechanism governing whether and how different H3K36 methylation forms impact repair pathways is unclear. Here, we unveil the distinct roles of H3K36 dimethylation (H3K36me2) and H3K36 trimethylation (H3K36me3) in DSB repair via non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) or homologous recombination (HR). Yeast cells lacking H3K36me2 or H3K36me3 exhibit reduced NHEJ or HR efficiency. yKu70 and Rfa1 bind H3K36me2- or H3K36me3-modified peptides and chromatin, respectively. Disrupting these interactions impairs yKu70 and Rfa1 recruitment to damaged H3K36me2- or H3K36me3-rich loci, increasing DNA damage sensitivity and decreasing repair efficiency. Conversely, H3K36me2-enriched intergenic regions and H3K36me3-enriched gene bodies independently recruit yKu70 or Rfa1 under DSB stress. Importantly, human KU70 and RPA1, the homologs of yKu70 and Rfa1, exclusively associate with H3K36me2 and H3K36me3 in a conserved manner. These findings provide valuable insights into how H3K36me2 and H3K36me3 regulate distinct DSB repair pathways, highlighting H3K36 methylation as a critical element in the choice of DSB repair pathway.

Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) featuring desirable biodegradability and biocompatibility has been recognized as one of the promising eco-friendly biomaterials. However, low crystallization and poor mechanical and chemical performances dramatically hamper its practical application. In this work, we report that functionalized cellulose/PLLA composite superhydrophobic stereocomplex films with controllable water adhesion and protein adsorption can be fabricated by a facile approach for the first time. First, cellulose is surface-modified by means of two silanization modification methods. Then, superhydrophobic cellulose/PLLA composite films are prepared through a solvent-evaporation-induced phase separation method. The two cellulose/PLLA composite films exhibit extreme water repellency but tunable water adhesion from sticky to slippery. The protein adsorption capacity of the cellulose/PLLA composite films can also be regulated. In addition, the stereocomplexation of the composite film provides excellent mechanical properties with an elongation at break of 22.36%, which is 237.8% higher than that of a pure PLLA film, which is more suitable for biomaterials. Furthermore, good biodegradability of the PLLA composite films in nature enables the bio-based composites as alternative materials to replace conventional petroleum-based polymers. The superhydrophobic films have also been demonstrated for many applications, including slippery surfaces, liquid transportation without loss, and antifouling.

Oily wastewater and marine oil spills are a massive environmental and human threat. Conventional oil spill treatment methods include adsorption by absorbent materials, dispersants or adsorbents, and in situ burning. Superhydrophobic materials, as a material that can achieve oil-water separation, have great potential for application in oil spill treatment. Research on superhydrophobic oil spill treatment mainly focuses on materials such as sponges and fabrics. Although these materials can effectively perform oil-water separation or oil spill adsorption, they also have the disadvantages of complicated preparation methods and high costs. Here, we present a miniature device for oil-water separation and oil spill collection and recovery. The superhydrophobic copper mesh box can be used on its own as an oil-water separation device or in combination with a commercial polyurethane sponge as a miniature oil-absorbing device. The robust copper mesh is prepared in two steps: anodizing and impregnation. The superhydrophobic copper mesh had a high oil separation flux (32,330 L m-2 h-1) and efficiency (97%), which remained high (28,560 L m-2 h-1) and efficient (95%) after 20 cycles of separation. The combined micro oil adsorption device can adsorb different oils and fats on the water surface, and it has good reusability with oil adsorption capacity and efficiency up to 15.28 g/g and 98% and still has good oil adsorption capacity (11.54 g/g) and efficiency (94.6%) after 20 cycles of adsorption. Therefore, the prepared micro oil-absorbing device has promising application prospects in oil-water separation, oil spill cleanup, etc. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: This study demonstrates a facile electrochemical approach to prepare a miniature device for high-efficiency oil-water separation and oil spill collection and recovery. The modified copper mesh's separation flux could reach 32,330 L m-2 h-1, showing great promise in oil-water separation and oil spill cleanup.

Accurate state-of-health (SOH) estimation is critical for reliable and safe operation of lithium-ion batteries. However, reliable and stable battery SOH estimation remains challenging due to diverse battery types and operating conditions. In this paper, we propose a physics-informed neural network (PINN) for accurate and stable estimation of battery SOH. Specifically, we model the attributes that affect the battery degradation from the perspective of empirical degradation and state space equations, and utilize neural networks to capture battery degradation dynamics. A general feature extraction method is designed to extract statistical features from a short period of data before the battery is fully charged, enabling our method applicable to different battery types and charge/discharge protocols. Additionally, we generate a comprehensive dataset consisting of 55 lithium-nickel-cobalt-manganese-oxide (NCM) batteries. Combined with three other datasets from different manufacturers, we use a total of 387 batteries with 310,705 samples to validate our method. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is 0.87%. Our proposed PINN has demonstrated remarkable performance in regular experiments, small sample experiments, and transfer experiments when compared to alternative neural networks. This study highlights the promise of physics-informed machine learning for battery degradation modeling and SOH estimation.

PURPOSE: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Statins, which are effective in preventing ASCVD, are underused, particularly for primary prevention. This study examined trends in statin use for primary ASCVD prevention from 1999 to 2020, focusing on demographic variations. METHODS: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the present study includes individuals aged 18 years and older who had a greater than 10% risk of ASCVD over 10 years, and excluded patients with existing ASCVD. Subgroup analyses by demographic categories were performed. We calculated the changes in statin usage and used linear and quadratic tests to assess the linear and nonlinear trends in those changes. RESULTS: A total of 10,037 participants were included. Statin usage increased from 16.16% in 1999 to 36.24% in 2010, and 41.74% in 2020 (quadratic P-value < 0.001). In the 18-44 years age group, statin usage increased from 2.52% in 1999 to 8.14% in 2020 (linear P-value = 0.322), showing no significant linear trend. In the "never-married" group, statin usage increased from 19.16% in 1999 to 30.05% in 2020 (linear P-value = 0.256). CONCLUSION: Statin usage has shown a positive trend among populations requiring primary prevention for ASCVD. Currently, health policies are proving effective. However, the overall statin usage rate remains less than 50%. Additionally, young and never-married individuals should also receive special attention regarding statin usage as primary treatment for ASCVD.

PbZrO3 has been broadly considered as a prototypical antiferroelectric material for high-power energy storage. A recent theoretical study suggests that the ground state of PbZrO3 is threefold-modulated ferrielectric, which challenges the generally accepted antiferroelectric configuration. However, such a novel ferrielectric phase was predicted only to be accessible at low temperatures. Here, we successfully achieve the room-temperature construction of the strongly competing ferrielectric and antiferroelectric state by strain-mediated phase separation in PbZrO3/SrTiO3 thin film. We demonstrate that the phase separation occurs spontaneously in quasi-periodic stripe-like patterns under a compressive misfit strain and can be tailored by varying the film thickness. The ferrielectric phase strikingly exhibitsa threefold modulation period with a nearly up-up-down configuration, which could be stabilized and manipulated by the formation and evolution of interfacial defects under applied strain. The present results construct a fertile ground for further exploring the physical properties and applications based on the novel ferrielectric phase.
