RESUMO

Serum samples obtained from livestock (cattle, chickens, pigs, sheep, goats and water buffaloes) slaughtered at various slaughter houses in Trinidad were screened for agglutinins to three zoonosis causing pathogens. Of a total of 751 sera tested, 2 (0.3%) originating from chickens were positive for Brucella abortus agglutinins using the Rose Bengal test (RBT), but both were negative by the tube serum agglutination test (SAT). Thirty-six (4.8%) of 749 sera were positive for Coxiella burnetii agglutinins by the capillary agglutination test (CAT) with the highest prevalence, 11.3%, detected in pig sera and the lowest, 0%, found in sheep and goat sera. The difference was not statistically significant (P > or = 0.05; chi 2). Of the 131 sera tested, 26 (19.8%) contained Toxoplasma gondii agglutinins with prevalences ranging from 5.5% in pigs to 42.9% in goats. It was concluded that livestock in Trinidad are free of B. abortus infections, but C. burnetii and T. gondii infections exist and are being documented for the first time in the island.

RESUMO

Confirming previous observations on dog populations in other parts of the world, notably Japan, the Philippine Islands, and some countries in South America, we found that a high percentage of dogs in Trinidad are infected with organisms from many serogroups of Leptospira. Serogroups Canicola and Icterohaemorrhagiae were most commonly found. Ten isolates obtained from 50 kidneys from stray dogs (20% infectivity rate) were typed as portland-vere (six) and canicola (two) of the Canicola serogroup, copenhageni of the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup (one), and georgia in the Hebdomadis serogroup (one). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first record of a serotype in the Hebdomadis serogroup being isolated from a dog. A cat isolation was identified as canicola. Serological results showed that 55% or more of stray dogs had been exposed as opposed to only 12.5% of the cats examined. Serogroups Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae and Hebdomadis are found most frequently in dogs, cats, mongooses, and man in Trinidad.

RESUMO

Salmonella organisms were isolated from samples of mesenteric lymph nodes taken from healthy market swine at an abattoir in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on 36 different visits over a 12-month period. Of the 869 samples examined, 160, or 18,4%, were positive for Salmonella. A total of 19 serotypes were isolated of which S. agona was the most prevalent. The findings are compared with observations by other workers.

RESUMO

Medical treatment of a pregnant 3 to 4-year old Barbados Black Belly ewe with a swelling of the left face and from which there was a bloody nasal discharge was unsuccessful. Further clinical examination of the animal led to the suspicion of a malignant neoplasm. The animal was euthanised and a detailed post mortem examination was performed. Gross and histological examination revealed an adenocarcinoma of the nasal cavity with metastasis to the lungs. Tumours in sheep generally, and adenocarcinomas of the nasal cavity in particular, are of rare occurence (AU)
