RESUMO

The Neotropical sharpshooter Sofiella gen. nov. is described and illustrated from the Araucaria moist forest in Southern and Southeastern Brazil (States of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo) based on two new species, S. takiyae sp. nov. (type-species) and S. nicolasi sp. nov. The new genus shares features with Exogonia but can be differentiated by the pronotal width slightly narrower than the transocular width of the head; pygofer without setose processes; aedeagus bearing a pair of apical processes; female sternite VII with posterior margin convex; and second valvula with few long, not prominent teeth and a well developed preapical prominence.

RESUMO

Marganana DeLong, 1948 currently includes three species known to occur in the United States, Mexico and Guyana. In this paper, we describe a new species from Brazil Marganana (Declivana) tetramaculata sp. nov. which represents the first record of this genus for the country. A revised diagnosis of the subgenus Declivana is provided, along with detailed descriptions and illustrations of males and females of the new species. A key to the four species of Marganana is also provided.(AU)

RESUMO

A new leafhopper genus in the tribe Gyponini is proposed based on Magnana splendidagen. nov. et sp. nov., from the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Representatives of the new genus differ from other genera in the tribe mainly by the large body size, the narrow head, moderately produced anterad, the rugose crown and frons, the ventral surface of metatarsomere I with two double rows of setae, and the aedeagus bearing atrial processes. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided, as well as remarks on the morphology of other gyponine genera.(AU)

RESUMO

Two new species of Regalana DeLong Freytag, 1975 are described and illustrated: Regalana jamari sp. nov. and Regalana madeira sp. nov., both from State of Rondônia, Northern Brazil. Delongiana gen. nov. is described within Gyponini, based on two new species from Brazil: Delongiana ramosa sp. nov., designated as type-species, from Minas Gerais and Paraná states and Delongiana baiana sp. nov. from Bahia and Rio de Janeiro states. The new genus can be distinguished from other Gyponini genera based on the combination of the following features: crown slightly produced, parallel striated; crown-face transition distinct, thick and striated; male pygofer with an oblique integument thickening near dorsal margin; subgenital plate very narrow and elongated; connective Y-shaped; style elongated with apex foot-shaped; aedeagus with dorsal apodemes strongly developed, shaft cylindrical and curved dorsally, with processes near mid-length and without apical processes. Additionally, new country records are given for Regalana bobbyi and R. dianae and state records to R. sheilae.

RESUMO

Two new monotypic genera of Gyponini from South America are proposed, described and illustrated. Caetana gen. nov., from Brazil and Ecuador, differs from other genera of the tribe by the scutellum strongly inflated; forewing expanded apically and hind wing with long r-m and m-cu. Insolitana gen. nov., from Peru, differs from other genera by the presence of a pair of longitudinal carinae on crown; crown, noto, and clavus punctuated; male sternite VIII (= pregenital sternite) fully covering the subgenital plates; and pygofer with internal dorsoapical process.

RESUMO

Two new species of Polana (Hobemanella) Mckamey, 2006 are described and illustrated from Brazil: Polana (H.) alvarengai sp. nov., from the states of Mato Grosso, Rondônia and Pará, which can be recognized by the aedeagal shaft with subapical group of eight spine-like processes on each side of shaft, on ventral surface; and Polana (H.) arcana sp. nov., from the state of Paraná, which can be recognized by the aedeagus with pair of elongated processes arising at base, almost as long as shaft length and parallel to shaft. A key to the 19 known species of Polana (Hobemanella) is presented.

RESUMO

The South American sharpshooter genus Cardioscarta Melichar, 1932 comprises six species. In this paper we describe and illustrate C. splendida sp. nov. based on a specimen from Bolivia (male holotype deposited in DZUP). The new species can be recognized by the orange ground color with five transverse dark brown stripes on dorsum (one on crown and four on forewings), and by the aedeagus with two pairs of dorsal processes on the basal apodemes and a single process at the apex of the shaft. A female from Peru is tentatively assigned to the new species and is also described, since it has the same color pattern as the holotype. An updated key to males and females of all known species of the genus is also given.

RESUMO

Paraulacizes munda (Fowler, 1899) has been considered a junior synonym of P. confusa (Signoret, 1855). These two species were described from Mexico. Here it is shown that P. munda can be distinguished from P. confusa by the color and size of the body. Hence, the former is revalidated from synonymy of the latter. Descriptions and illustrations of the male and female genitalia of P. munda, which are necessary for an accurate identification of leafhopper species in general, are provided for the first time. Paraulacizes munda can be distinguished from the other 11 species currently included in Paraulacizes by the following combination of features: ground color of anterior dorsum yellow or pale yellow; dorsal processes of male pygofer strongly inflated apically; style with apex transversely truncate, not projected inward; atrial processes of aedeagus, in lateral view, not distinctly curved apically; female sternite VII with small median lobe on posterior margin and pair of dark brown marks posteromedially. This is the first detailed description of the first and second ovipositor valvulae of a Paraulacizes species. The female genitalia of Paraulacizes are compared with those of the related genera Aulacizes Amyot & Serville, 1843 and Proconosama Young, 1968.

RESUMO

Sulcana cunicula sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on four specimens from municipality of São José dos Pinhais, state of Paraná, Brazil. This species can be distinguished from others in the genus by the following characters: (1) head produced, slightly shorter than median length of pronotum; (2) aedeagus bearing a pair of acute ventral processes at mid-length of shaft and extended dorsally. A new record to Sulcana brevis DeLong & Freytag and a key to the three species of the genus are also presented.
