Cowpea is one of the main crops in family agriculture, especially in the Northeastern region of Brazil, and it is expanding to other regions in Brazil. The use of seeds with low physiological and health quality is reflected in the plant development and consequently yield, making it important to study the seed physiological and health quality. The objective of the present study was to assess the physiology and health of traditional and biofortified cowpea seeds. The traditional cowpea varieties (Angelim, Mercado and Manteguinha) and the biofortified cowpea cultivars (BRS Aracê, BRS Xique-Xique and BRS Tumucumaque) were assessed for the following physiological parameters: water content (WC), first count (FC), germination test (G), germination speed index (GSI), seedling emergence in the greenhouse (E), emergence speed index (ESI), seedling aerial part and root length (APL and RL) and electric conductivity test (EC). The seed health quality was assessed by the Blotter Test. The water content present in the seeds of the traditional and biofortified varieties ranged from 10% to 14%. All the traditional and biofortified varieties showed high germination and emergence value in the greenhouse. The germination and emergence speed indexes indicated the BRS Aracê and BRS Xique-Xique cultivars as the most vigorous. In the health tests the highest indexes were the storage fungi Aspergillus sp., Cladosporium sp. and Penicillium sp., with the highest prevalence in the BRS Tumucumaque variety, which was probably related to the higher water content present in this variety.

Chemical datasets describing the occurrence of both inorganic and organic contaminants along the Doce River Basin (DRB) could provide a better understanding of the potential impacts of a major mining dam collapse disaster combined to additional chronic sources of contamination. This data article presents datasets of main contaminants detected in the water and sediments sampled four years after the mining dam collapse in the DRB. A summary table of data obtained in the literature is also provided to allow a comparison of the variation of chemicals before, right after in 2015/2016 and after the event (current data). In addition, there are also provided physical-chemical parameters of water and sediments of different sampling sites, which could support the investigation of chemicals distribution. For this purpose, triplicate samples of water and sediment were obtained in 8 sampling sites along the DRB during wet and dry seasons of 2019, totalizing 48 samples of each environmental matrix. The sampling sites were strategically selected according to their different main sources of pollution along the river. Concentrations of trace elements and organic contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and pyrethroids) were determined in samples of water and sediments by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry GC-MS, respectively. Main data obtained in the literature consisted in published reports from environmental agencies (IGAM) and private companies (RENOVA) as well as journal articles. The datasets provided may be useful to the stakeholders, which include scientific community, authorities and public agencies, and private companies interested to understand the impacts of the contaminants introduced along the River Basin four years after the environmental disaster.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma (POF) is a reactive hyperplastic lesion that exclusively occurs in the gingiva and is characterized by the deposition of dystrophic calcification, cementum-like tissue, and immature and mature bone within the connective tissue. The objective of the present study was to perform a retrospective analysis of clinicopathologic features of POF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical and histopathological data were obtained from biopsy records and histopathological reports from a Brazilian reference service in Oral Pathology (1999 - 2020). Morphological analysis was performed to evaluate features related to the mesenchymal component, inflammatory infiltrate, ulceration, and mineralized tissue. RESULTS: A total of 270 POFs were diagnosed during the study period. A higher frequency was observed in females (71.9%) between the third (22.9%) and fourth (23.3%) decades of life. The anterior upper gingiva (29.1%) was the most affected region. Mature (86.7%) and immature (52.6%) bone tissue were the most frequent. There was a significant association between immature bone deposition and lesions with size ≤ 1.7 cm (p = 0.041); immature bone and cement-like tissue deposition with an evolution time ≤ 16 months (p < 0.001); deposition of immature bone and mesenchymal hypercellularization (p < 0.001); deposition of dystrophic calcification and the presence of ulceration (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical characteristics corroborate the findings in the literature. The heterogeneous distribution and quantity of mineralized tissues found in the analyzed cases support the theory that the different mineralized tissues constitute a spectrum of clinical maturation of POF.

BACKGROUND: Nasopalatine duct cyst (NDC) is the most common non-odontogenic cyst in the oral cavity. Clinically it is not difficult to suspect these lesions based on clinical and radiographic appearance. However, the histopathological diagnosis may be difficult due to the broad morphological diversity of these lesions. The objective was to analyze the clinicopathological features of NDCs diagnosed in two oral and maxillofacial pathology services in the Brazilian northeast. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective clinicopathologic study was performed. A total of 18,121 clinical records of oral lesions from two oral and maxillofacial pathology services in Brazil were analyzed (2000-2020). All NDCs cases were revised and demographic, clinical, radiographic, and histopathological data were collected. RESULTS: Among 18,121 diagnoses in the oral pathology services, 45 (0.2%) were NDCs. The series comprises 24 males (53.3%) and 21 females (46.7%), with a mean age of 43.2 years-old. Most lesions were asymptomatic (n = 27, 60%) with an mean size of 2.1 cm. Microscopically, the non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium was the most common (66.7%). However, in 88.9% of cases, the epithelial lining was varied and composed of two or more types of epithelium. There was no significant association between the type of epithelium and the size of the cysts (p = 0.389). Nerve, blood vessels, hemorrhage, and chronic inflammatory infiltrate were commonly observed. In contrast, there was a low frequency of mucous glands, sebaceous glands, cholesterol clefts, and multinucleated giant cells. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical, radiographic, and microscopic findings observed in this study are similar to those reported in the literature. Due to the morphological diversity of NDC, it is needed to correlate its histopathological features with the clinical and radiographic findings to establish a correct diagnosis.

The aim of this prospective study was to report on the response to treatment of central giant cell lesions (CGCL) with intralesional corticosteroid injections. Consecutive cases of CGCL were treated with a biweekly intralesional injection of 20mg/ml triamcinolone hexacetonide diluted in an anaesthetic solution of 2% lidocaine/epinephrine 1:200 000 at the proportion 1:1. All patients were monitored using cone beam computed tomography. Eleven patients were treated; their ages ranged from 15-34 (mean 22 years); and eight lesions were in the mandible, and three in the maxilla. Three cases were diagnosed as non-aggressive, and eight as aggressive. Six cases presented good results (four aggressive and two non-aggressive); three cases presented a moderate response (two aggressive and one non-aggressive); and two had a poor response to treatment (both aggressive). In four cases with a good response, osteoplasty was done. In all cases with a moderate response, the remaining lesion was curetted. Cases with a poor response were submitted to either curettage or denosumab injections. Corticotherapy, as main or neoadjuvant therapy, may be an option for treatment of CGCL.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between genetic polymorphisms in human epidermal growth factor (EGF) (rs4444903) and transforming growth factor ß1 - (TGF-ß1) (rs1800470) with facial measurements in patients with dentofacial deformities. A total of 144 adult patients with dentofacial deformities were included. Facial linear and angular measurements were traced in lateral cephalometric radiographs used Dolphin 2D software. Cells from oral mucosa were collected for DNA to be extracted. The polymorphisms were genotyped using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Probabilites of less than 0.05 were accepted as significant. The rs4444903 heterozygous patients had a decrease in the mandibular length (p=0.043) and the length of the mandibular base (p=0.008), and homozygous A patients also had a reduction in the length of the mandibular base (p=0.013) compared with homozygous G patients. Patients AG had an increase in measurement of the anterior facial height (p=0.032) and in ANS-Me distance (p=0.022) when compared with homozygous A. To the rs1800470, heterozygous patients had an increase in the length of the mandibular base (p=0.043) when compared with homozygous A. Heterozygous AG patients had an increase in angular measurements in TGF-ß1 polymorphism for the upper gonial angle, when compared with the homozygous AA (p=0.032). Genetic polymorphisms in EGF and TGF-ß1 are associated with facial measurements in a Brazilian population of patients with dentofacial deformities.

BACKGROUND: Sheehan's syndrome (SS) is one of the leading causes of hypopituitarism in developing countries. It occurs after postpartum necrosis of the pituitary gland, and it is considered a significant public health problem. This paper, apparently unpublished, aimed to perform an analysis on oral aspects in patients with SS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed with 23 women diagnosed with SS at the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes (Walter Cantidio University Hospital, Fortaleza, Brazil). RESULTS: Data on sociodemographic, dental and salivary flow aspects were collected through a clinical approach and a panoramic radiograph request. The mean age was 64 ± 11.5 years old, with the sample consisting mainly of married women (56.5%), socioeconomic class C2 or D / E (78.2%) and years of education up to 8 years (69.5%). The presence of horizontal bone loss (p<0.001) and bilateral pneumatization of the maxillary sinus (p=0.015) were significant data. The mean number of absent teeth considering all subjects was 23.17±9.7, being statistically significant (p<0.001). In relation to age, the mean number of missing teeth was higher in individuals over 65 years old (p=0.048). Reduced salivary flow was observed in 78.3% of the patients. In a bivariate analysis, considering the outcome variables missing teeth and reduced salivary flow, it was observed that economic class (p<0.001), family income (0.037) and maxillary sinus pneumatization (0.032) were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: In brief, patients with SS showed severe teeth loss, reduced salivary flow, and low educational status. This study addressed important aspects regarding oral findings in SS and highlighted the importance of researches in oral medicine.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic tumors (OTs) are rare lesions, exclusive of the jaws, that are derived from epithelial and/or ectomesenchymal elements of the tooth-forming apparatus. Their biological behavior is heterogeneous, including hamartomatous tissue proliferation, benign nonaggressive and aggressive neoplasms, and malignant tumors with metastatic capacity. The aim of this study was to describe the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in a Brazilian population. In addition, a review of the literature identified studies on odontogenic tumors that follow the 2005 World Health Organization. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 376 cases of odontogenic tumors from an oral pathology service were reviewed about age, gender, anatomic site and histologic diagnosis. RESULTS: Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (31.6%) were the most common, followed by ameloblastoma (28.5%), and odontoma (22.6%). The mean age was 32.2 years, and more than half the patients (52.1%) were in the second and third decades of life. The male to female ratio was 1:1.37, with a maxilla to mandible ratio of 1:2.08. CONCLUSIONS: The variation in relative frequency of tumors observed among the several series, including the present study, is probably due in part to cultural differences between geographic areas but also to the study design.

AIM: To evaluate if pre- and post-procedure administration of controlled-release oxycodone (CRO) in combination with standard analgesia improves pain control and decreases the amount of required post-procedure opioids in uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2009 and March 2010, 60 consecutive women were prospectively randomised in two groups for UFE: the control group, in which 30 patients underwent the standard anaesthetic procedure and the CRO group, in which 30 patients underwent the standard anaesthetic procedure with the addition of CRO. Age, pain, nausea/vomiting, fibroid volume, length of hospital stay, and use and dose of morphine received via the patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) device in both groups were evaluated to compare the two methods of pain control. Fibroid volume as measured at magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was evaluated for correlation with post-embolisation pelvic pain over a period of 24 hours. RESULTS: A significant difference was seen in the pain scores at 24 hours (p=0.029), with less pain in the CRO group. More patients from the control group required morphine (p=0.017), and at higher levels (p=0.130). Pruritus was lower in patients of the CRO group, probably because they received less morphine (p=0.029). No correlation was seen between leiomyoma volume and pain levels over 24 hours (Spearman's ρ=0.02; p=0.881). Length of hospital stay was not different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The addition of CRO to standard analgesia for UFE provides more effective analgesia, with a reduction in pain scores in 24 hours, less morphine use, and decreased side effects, mainly pruritus.

This study evaluated the control of streptococcosis outbreaks in Brazil, isolated from diseased sorubim and identified as Lactococcus garvieae by genetic sequencing. This report determined the potential for lactococcosis control in sorubim Pseudoplatystoma sp. with two vaccines: an aqueous-based, whole-cell inactivated vaccine (bacterin) and an oil-adjuvanted bacterin. Their efficacy was evaluated at 30 days post-vaccination (d.p.v.) by challenge with L. garvieae, and the antibody production response at 15, 30 and 60 d.p.v. and the non-specific immune response were compared amongst treatments. High protection levels (P < 0.05) were achieved with the oil-adjuvanted vaccine with a relative percentage survival value of 81.7% at 30 d.p.v. Additionally, the oil-adjuvanted vaccine increased the immunogenicity of the bacterin as indicated by greater agglutination antibody titres from 15 until 60 d.p.v. This is the first report of a positive effect of vaccine administration on the specific immunity of sorubim, and the study showed that a specific antibody plays an important role in sorubim defence against lactococcosis because the innate immune responses were similar in all of the studied animals. These results demonstrated that oil-adjuvanted vaccine can be an effective alternative for the protection of sorubim from L. garvieae disease.

AIM: To describe the relative frequencies of oral biopsies among a sample of children aged 0-16 years and compare the results with an adult population as well as with previous studies. METHODS: Information about age, gender, anatomic site, and histopathological diagnosis was retrieved from the files of the Oral Pathology Laboratory of the University of Fortaleza (Brazil). Diagnosis data of 1240 biopsies were classified into eight groups. RESULTS: Relative frequencies of biopsies increased with age. The 16 most frequent lesions accounted for 70% of all biopsies. The most frequent diagnostic group was salivary gland pathology (30.4%). Mucocele was the most common lesion (27.1%), followed by dental follicle (5.6%) and fibroma (4.4%). These results were statistically different from those of the comparable adult population (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The most frequent lesion was mucocele, and this result is in agreement with the literature. There was a significant difference between the study paediatric and adult populations. The variations in distribution of lesions observed between the several studies were probably due to cultural differences between geographic areas but also to differing elements of the study design.

Bacterial ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters play a crucial role in the physiology and pathogenicity of different bacterial species. Components of ABC transporters have also been tested as target antigens for the development of vaccines against different bacterial species, such as those belonging to the Streptococcus genus. Streptococcus mutans is the etiological agent of dental caries, and previous studies have demonstrated that deletion of the gene encoding PstS, the substrate-binding component of the phosphate uptake system (Pst), reduced the adherence of the bacteria to abiotic surfaces. In the current study, we generated a recombinant form of the S. mutans PstS protein (rPstS) with preserved structural features, and we evaluated the induction of antibody responses in mice after sublingual mucosal immunization with a formulation containing the recombinant protein and an adjuvant derived from the heat-labile toxin from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains. Mice immunized with rPstS exhibited systemic and secreted antibody responses, measured by the number of immunoglobulin A-secreting cells in draining lymph nodes. Serum antibodies raised in mice immunized with rPstS interfered with the adhesion of bacteria to the oral cavity of naive mice challenged with S. mutans. Similarly, mice actively immunized with rPstS were partially protected from oral colonization after challenge with the S. mutans NG8 strain. Therefore, our results indicate that S. mutans PstS is a potential target antigen capable of inducing specific and protective antibody responses after sublingual administration. Overall, these observations raise interesting perspectives for the development of vaccines to prevent dental caries.

O estômago apresenta duas curvaturas, maior e menor, sendo a porção dilatada do tubo digestivo entre o esôfago e o duodeno. A parede gástrica é constituída pela serosa, três camadas musculares, submucosa e mucosa. Nos equinos, o estômago é relativamente exíguo, com capacidade média de 15 a 18 litros, em relação ao total do trato digestório. Não são raros os casos de ruptura gástrica após sobrecarga fermentativa, quando não se pratica a drenagem via sondagem naso-gástrica, sendo o prognóstico desfavorável, pois o óbito ocorre em poucas horas. Em situações raras, devido a traumas ou causas iatrogênicas pode ocorrer fístula gastro-cutânea sem contaminação peritoneal. Neste trabalho, descreve-se a presença de stula gastro-cutânea em um equino, macho, SRD, 5 anos, encaminhado ao HV Universidade Federal do Piauí.

A polidactilia é a presença de dígitos extras, podendo acometer todos ou apenas um membro, sendo mais frequente no torácico. Caracteriza-se pela duplicação parcial ou completa, com origem genética, sendo rara na espécie equina, onde a causa ainda não foi esclarecida. Para o diagnóstico, mesmo tratando-se de uma anormalidade diagnosticada clinicamente, o exame radiográfico é indispensável, pois proporciona avaliação precisa das estruturas envolvidas. A amputação do dígito extranumerário e preservação do dígito principal é o método de tratamento indicado nestes casos. Objetivou-se com esse trabalho descrever a ocorrência de polidactilia unilateral em um equino fêmea de um ano e dois meses de idade, da raça Quarto de Milha.

A osteodistrofia fibrosa é uma doença metabólica óssea caracterizada por osteopenia devido à intensa reabsorção óssea, sofrendo substituição por tecido conjuntivo fibroso, e formação de cisto. Essa enfermidade é resultado direto da ação contínua e excessiva do paratormônio sobre os ossos, deixando-os facilmente fraturáveis e doloridos ao sustentarem peso. A enfermidade é consequente de um estado nutricional deficiente em Cálcio (Ca), podendo ser resultante de uma deficiência primaria ou secundária. A primária é decorrente de uma baixa ingestão de Ca, ou devido a grande oferta de alimentos ricos em Fósforo (P). Outra causa frequente no desencadeamento de osteodistrofia fibrosa é a ingestão de Brachiaria humidicula como alimento volumoso. Na deficiência de Ca secundária poderá ocorrer uma deficiência de vitamina D, por insuficiente irradiação solar ultravioleta na pele.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic fibro-odontomas (AFO) are rare lesions and defined by the World Health Organisation as a tumour composed of a proliferation of odontogenic epithelium immersed in ectomesenchyme reminiscent of the interdental papilla. It also presents inductive processes leading to formation of enamel and dentine, confusing, histopathologically, with odontoma. Despite numerous efforts, there is still considerable confusion over its controversial aetiopathogenesis and treatment. A brief review of the literature on the clinical, pathological and therapeutic features of this lesion is reported. CASE REPORT: A case of aggressive AFO in a 3-year-old boy was referred to the Oral Diagnostics Service of Hospital General de Fortaleza for evaluation following a 3-months painless swelling in the right mandibular and facial regions. During anamnesis, the patient's carers reported no systemic problem and his medical history was non-contributory. Intra-orally there was a swelling of the right lateral portion of the mandible, adjacent teeth were not mobile and the oral mucosa appeared normal and showed no signs of ulceration. Radiographic examination, with panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography with three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction, was better able to identify the extent of bone involvement and showed an expansive hypodense image in the right mandibular region. 3D reconstruction showed expansion of buccal and lingual cortical bone and the preservation of basal bone. TREATMENT: Enucleation and curettage of the lesion were carried out and care was taken not to fracture the basal bone during the surgical procedure. Tissue specimens were sent for histopathologic analysis. Aspiration performed during surgery was negative for blood and other exudates. FOLLOW-UP: No recurrence has occurred during a follow-up period of 11 months. CONCLUSION: A comprehensive diagnosis including all clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features is necessary for the success of therapy, which varies from case to case, thus, improving the quality of life of patients with AFO.
