RESUMO

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits in social interaction and expressing and understanding emotions. Based on this, robots for children with ASD have been proposed. However, few studies have been conducted about how to design a social robot for children with ASD. Non-experimental studies have been carried out to evaluate social robots; however, the general methodology that should be used to design a social robot is not clear. This study proposes a design path for a social robot for emotional communication for children with ASD following a user-centered design approach. This design path was applied to a case study and evaluated by a group of experts in psychology, human-robot interaction, and human-computer interaction from Chile and Colombia, as well as parents of children with ASD. Our results show that following the proposed design path for a social robot to communicate emotions for children with ASD is favorable.

Summary Introduction: Characterizing athletes is essential. In professional soccer it is done, although not in a standardized way. This research is the first phase of an evaluation and monitoring model. Objective: To describe the profile of the variables of biomedical and sports control in a team of professional soccer players. Methods: Descriptive study in 32 soccer players. Variables were grouped in: 1) identification; 2) sports background; 3) anthropometry; 4) training monitoring; 5) strength; 6) GPS. Measurements were made according to standardized protocol. The means and standard deviations (SD), medians and interquartile range (IQR) and relative frequencies are presented. Analysis by playing position is carried out on key components. Results: The mean age was 24.0 ± 4.6. The time as a professional was 5.5 years. Ligament and muscle injuries were the most common antecedents with 31.5% and 22.9%, respectively; 71.0% occurred in competition. Goalkeepers and forwards had higher percentages of fat mass. Defenders and midfielders had the longest distances covered with 64.560 and 64.386 meters, respectively. Defenders and forwards reached the highest sprint frequencies (>27km /h). The greatest strength imbalances were recorded by goalkeepers (50% left knee), followed by 33.0% in midfielders. High heterogeneity was evidenced in creatine kinase (CPK) values. Conclusion: A standardized and interdisciplinary model allows determining nutritional status and antecedents, monitoring load and playing profile, evaluating imbalances and muscle overload markers; with the aim of reducing the risk of injury and increasing performance.

Abstract Obesity has increased in epidemic proportions worldwide and is increasingly associated with other conditions such as hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea and diabetes. Considering the adverse effects that obesity has on cardiovascular hemodynamicsm structure and function, it is not surprising that in the context of obesity most cardiovascular diseases increase in frequency, including hypertension, coronary artery disease and heart failure, in addition to the significant increase in the risk of de novo atrial fibrillation and its recurrence. Structural cardiac factors, and probably cardiometabolic factors, account for much of this effect. A search for articles and scientific studies in databases (PubMed, Medline, EMBASE) was carried out, concluding that obesity contributes significantly to the risk of atrial fibrillation. The literature provides solid evidence in favor of incorporating exercise as a complementary strategy for atrial fibrillation management, demonstrating that higher levels of physical activity within the optimal range can be beneficial.

RESUMO

Introduction: The Muisca Indigenous people in Cota, Colombia, has committed to reviving and strengthening their traditional culture, including the ancestral knowledge associated with their traditional medicine. Objective: To explore the occurrence of traditional medicine and factors associated with its use among the Muisca people in Cota, Colombia. Methods: A participatory cross-sectional study applied a questionnaire to 471 Muisca mothers who had at least one child over 10 in April 2019. The 44 questions inquired demographic, social, and cultural factors of participants and their knowledge, use and practice of traditional medicine. We used the Mantel-Haenszel procedure to measure the associations using Odds Ratio and 95% confidence intervals. Results: 66.2% (312/471) of the mothers knew at least three cases of traditional diseases; 56.8% (267/470) had and used medicinal plants; 15.8% (73/462) had practiced traditional self-care for flu, menstruation and postpartum; and 11.8% (54/458) reported that they had gone to midwives, bonesetters and healers. Four factors had a significant association (p < 0.05) with traditional medicine: consumption of three traditional foods; having traditional gardens and plants; living within the reservation; and parents born in a municipality of indigenous influence. Conclusions: The study showed that the permanence of traditional medicine is strongly associated with traditional food, agricultural vocation and the possession and use of medicinal plants. The results suggest that the strategy for the recovery of traditional medicine could focus on promoting a stronger link between indigenous identity, territory, food and health.

RESUMO

Traditionally, edible flowers have been used as foods and for therapeutic purposes, today they have gained importance due to their bioactive compounds such as flavonols, anthocyanins or other phenolic compounds, which give them potential for biomedical applications. This work evaluated a methanolic extract of Tulbaghia violacea. Eleven individual phenolic compounds were found and quantified by mass spectrometry in the extract. Antioxidant activity tests (TEAC, FRAP and DPPH) and other characterization parameters were assayed (total phenolic content and total flavonoid content). In vitro studies showed antitumoral activity against ovarian tumoral cells mediated by the induction of non-dependent caspase cell death and by the activation of reactive oxygen species. The effect of the extract against features of Alzheimer disease was in vivo assayed in Caenorhabditis elegans. Tulbaghia extract led to a reduction in the 1-42 beta amyloid peptide formation and prevented oxidative stress. These results suggested that Tulbaghia violacea could be a new source of phenolic compounds for nutraceuticals and functional food development.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection acquired through blood transfusion, by direct contact with an active lesion or by the vertical route. The infection can be transmitted to the fetus at any time during pregnancy. Each year, 749,000 cases of congenital syphilis are reported worldwide. In Mexico, from 2007 to 2017, 1030 cases of congenital syphilis were reported (average of 90.6 cases per year). In 50 to 80% of cases there are maternal-fetal complications. OBJECTIVE: To report a clinical case of early congenital syphilis with bullous pemphigus and desquamation at birth. CLINICAL CASE: 25-year-old patient, with a history of four pregnancies, two deliveries and one abortion, previously healthy, with prenatal control and negative VDRL and HIV tests. The last two pregnancies ended with a newborn, both female, with decapitated blistering lesions, whitish plaques of rough appearance raised on an erythematous base, erythema with thick desquamation on the hands and feet, and generalized fine desquamation. Suspecting congenital syphilis, 50,000 IU/kg of crystalline penicillin G intravenously every 12 h was started. The suspicion of congenital syphilis was confirmed. The patient was discharged with follow-up outpatient appointments. CONCLUSIONS: Adequate prenatal screening, with one or two tests for syphilis, is not sufficient to prevent the congenital form. Case analysis is necessary to find options and implement public health strategies to prevent new cases.

RESUMO

Research on affective communication for socially assistive robots has been conducted to enable physical robots to perceive, express, and respond emotionally. However, the use of affective computing in social robots has been limited, especially when social robots are designed for children, and especially those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Social robots are based on cognitive-affective models, which allow them to communicate with people following social behaviors and rules. However, interactions between a child and a robot may change or be different compared to those with an adult or when the child has an emotional deficit. In this study, we systematically reviewed studies related to computational models of emotions for children with ASD. We used the Scopus, WoS, Springer, and IEEE-Xplore databases to answer different research questions related to the definition, interaction, and design of computational models supported by theoretical psychology approaches from 1997 to 2021. Our review found 46 articles; not all the studies considered children or those with ASD.

RESUMO

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have grown exponentially in the education context and the use of digital products by children is increasing. As a result, teachers are taking advantage of ICTs to include mobile devices such as Tablets or Smartphones inside the classroom as playful support material to motivate children during their learning. Designing an interactive experience for a child with a special need such as a hearing impairment is a great challenge. In this article, two interactive systems are depicted, using a non-traditional interaction, by the following stages: analysis, design and implementation, with the participation of children with cochlear implant in the Institute of Blind and Deaf Children of Valle del Cauca, Colombia and the ASPAS Institute, Mallorca, Spain, who evaluated both interactive systems, PHONOMAGIC and CASETO. Positive results were obtained, showing that the use of real objects can greatly influence the environment in which children interact with the game, allowing them to explore and manipulate the objects supporting their teaching-learning processes.

RESUMO

Background Given the large increases in opioid use among pregnant women and associations with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, screening pregnant women who are on (opioid agonist) pharmacotherapy for HCV infection has potential to inform medical care for these mothers as well as their newborns. We investigated the HCV testing cascade among pregnant women on pharmacotherapy in order to describe exposure and infection rates and to identify opportunities that would improve care. Methods Secondary analyses of laboratory results were performed for HCV testing, including anti-HCV, viremia (RNA) and genotype. Information was abstracted from the medical records of women who were followed at a comprehensive prenatal care clinic for women with substance use disorders at the University of New Mexico. Results The sample included 190 pregnant women, of whom 188 were on pharmacotherapy (43.7% on buprenorphine and 55.3% on methadone); the remaining two had tested positive for heroin or prescription opioids. A total of 178 (93.7%) were tested for anti-HCV, 94 (98.9%) of whom were tested for RNA, and 41 (57.7%) were genotyped. Prevalence of exposure to HCV by anti-HCV results was 53.3%, and 37.3% were positive for HCV RNA indicating chronic infection. Conclusions The high prevalence of exposure and infection with HCV in pregnant women involved in pharmacotherapy for a substance use disorder indicate a need for ongoing surveillance and testing for HCV. Identifying HCV during pregnancy is crucial because this identification would serve to enhance medical care and potentially prevent vertical transmission. Identifying HCV would also facilitate referrals to newly available curative HCV treatments following delivery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare perimenopausal symptomatology using a levonorgestrel-containing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) + low-dose transdermal estradiol (TDE) with LNG-IUS alone. METHODS: The trial was a double-blind, randomized, controlled pilot trial. Regularly cycling women aged 38 to 52 years, with at least one self-reported symptom (hot flashes, bloating, headache, adverse mood, or poor sleep), were randomized to either LNG-IUS + low-dose TDE gel (intervention) or LNG-IUS alone (control). TDE was administered once daily as a 0.06% gel containing 0.75 mg of TDE for 50 days. LNG-IUS was placed at least 90 days before TDE or placebo gel treatment to assure stable circulating LNG. Participants completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CESD), Hot Flash Related Daily Interference scale (HFRDIS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) at the time of LNG-IUS placement, at 90 days (the time of randomization to TDE/placebo), and 140 days (end of study). TDE and placebo groups were compared using repeated-measures analysis of variance. RESULTS: Thirty-eight women aged 42.9 ±â€Š2.7 years, with a mean BMI of 24.7 ±â€Š3.3 kg/m², were enrolled; 20 were randomized to TDE. Women receiving TDE had significantly improved FSS scores between days 90 and 140 (mean difference TDE: -0.8 ±â€Š1.2 vs placebo: 0.1 ±â€Š0.7; P = 0.026) and borderline significant improvement in HFRDIS scores (mean difference TDE: -5.5 ±â€Š15.3 vs placebo: 4.2 ±â€Š13.1; P = 0.076). Women who reported hot flashes at baseline and who received TDE had a significant decrease in HFRDIS scores between days 90 and 140 (n = 9, P = 0.035). CESD and PSQI scores were not associated with TDE use. CONCLUSIONS: A brief, low-dose estrogen intervention, combined with a LNG-IUS, led to significant improvement of some common perimenopausal symptoms. Such a "minimalist" approach to management of the perimenopause holds promise for reducing common, bothersome perimenopausal symptoms while maintaining effective contraception.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Dietary habits have a great influence on people health of, and its study is extremely important to proof adaptation to current recommendations in order to develop nutritional education and/or supplementation policies adjusted to reality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive cross study with the participation of postgraduate students. Participants were selected using non-probability accidental sampling accidental. Information was sent by e-mail, including a questionnaire on socio-demographic characteristics and a 3-day dietary record. We obtained a sample of n = 50 participants. The 3-day dietary records were evaluated with NutrIber software and the data obtained were treated using the statistical software SPSS 15. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The profile of the students was 80% females and 20% males, mean age 33.7 ± 9.32 years, and body mass index of 22.91 ± 4.07. All groups have an excessive consumption of proteins and lipids and carbohydrates deficit. At the macro-story is remarkable that no group covers iodine recommended nutrient intake, and that no group of women covers the recommendations for fiber, folic acid and iron intake. CONCLUSIONS: Further studies are needed to confirm the results found. However, it can be concluded that urban populations in Latin America are increasingly closer to the model of Western diet, rich in protein and fat and low in carbohydrates, fiber and micronutrients, which is indicative of poor diets in whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

The objectives of this study were to ascertain the prevalence and potential sources of lead exposure among pregnant women residing in a socially-disadvantaged immigrant community in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Pregnant women (n = 140) receiving prenatal care through a community clinic participated in a structured interview and screening to measure their blood lead levels (BLLs). Potential sources of lead exposure were ascertained by the CDC and New Mexico Department of Health questionnaires. Self-reported risk factors were examined as predictors of BLLs using multiple linear regression and partial least squares discriminant analysis. Most patients were Spanish-speaking (88.6%), Latina (95%), foreign-born (87.1%), lacked health insurance (86.4%), and had a high school education or lower (84.3%). While risk factors were prevalent in this population, only three women (2.1%) had BLLs ≥3 µg/dL. Results of multivariate analyses demonstrated that pica symptoms in pregnancy, history of elevated BLLs before pregnancy, use of non-commercial pottery, and living in older houses were important predictors of elevated BLLs. Although the prevalence of other risk factors relevant to immigrant communities (i.e., use of traditional/folk remedies and cosmetics, seasonings and food products from Mexico) was high, they were not predictive of elevated BLLs. Clinics providing prenatal care to immigrant Hispanic communities should carefully assess patients' pica symptoms, use of non-commercial pottery, and a history of elevated BLLs. Moreover, additional efforts need to focus on the development of screening questionnaires which better reflect exposures of concern in this population.

Introduction. In addition to different functional and structural deficits, cerebrovascular disease causes severaltypes of restrictions in social participation. Objective. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical, social and occupational characteristics as well as the self-perception in patients with cerebrovascular disease (stroke) attended in a neurological institution in Colombia. Materials and methods. 81 clinical records with stroke diagnosis and a hospital discharge time between 6 months and two years were evaluated. Date regarding sings, symptoms and vascular territory were collected. Additionally a 19 questions interview was applied asking about self-perception, course and current state of disability. Results. The distribution of patients was ischemic stroke 71,6%, hemorrhagic stroke 19.8% and lacunar infarction 8.6%. Right middle cerebral artery was the most frequently affected (58%). Motor deficit and dysarthria were the main complains at the admission time. 65.3% reported improvement of the motor deficit initially described. Before the stroke 64.3% wereoccupationally active, after the stroke only 10.7% kept their previous job. Conclusion. In this sample ischemic stroke was the most frequent cause of cerebrovascular disease. Alterations on the speaking and motor skills are explainable by the compromise of the right middle cerebral artery. In spite of the self - perception of improvement there is considerable impact on the occupational field.
