RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial distribution of purebred Bos taurus taurus bovine breeds raised in Brazil in association with climatic, physical and socioeconomic variables. The breeds Aberdeen Angus, Ayrshire, Braford, Brangus, Charolais, Devon, Flemish, Hereford, Pinzgauer, Shorthorn and Simental were classified according to their aptitude (milk, meat or dual-purpose). They were spatialized according to their aptitude using state and municipal information. The milk breeds were found in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, while the dual-purpose breeds were found in Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul states and the beef breeds were concentrated in the southern region. Only the Aberdeen Angus meat breed showed higher dispersion in other regions. Meat and dual-purpose breeds tended to be raised in regions with lower maximum temperature, average temperature, thermal amplitude and temperature-humidity index. Dual-purpose breeds were found in municipalities with high humidity and altitude, but with a low gross domestic product, little technical guidance received from cooperatives and the government, low control of diseases and parasites, as well as low use of pasture rotation systems. The spatial distribution of Brazilian bovine taurine breeds, regardless of aptitude, was related to climatic, physical and socioeconomic factors.(AU)

This study estimated the genetic variability and correlations between growth and reproductive traits in Nelore cattle. Annual genetic changes in female reproductive traits were also evaluated using repeated measures. Direct heritability was moderate for the growth traits and scrotal circumference (0.235 ±â€¯0.015 to 0.443 ±â€¯0.006), indicating genetic variability in these traits in the population studied. Maternal heritability was low for weaning height (0.042 ±â€¯0.012) and weaning weight (0.112 ±â€¯0.013). Regarding female reproductive traits, gestation length (GL) exhibited a slightly higher heritability (0.179 ±â€¯0.006) than days to calving (DC) and calving interval (CI) (0.123 ±â€¯0.006 and 0.105 ±â€¯0.008, respectively). Repeatability was lower for GL (0.222 ±â€¯0.006) compared to DC (0.318 ±â€¯0.004) and CI (0.406 ±â€¯0.006). Moderate and positive genetic correlations were obtained between the growth traits and scrotal circumference, ranging from 0.193 ±â€¯0.019 to 0.519 ±â€¯0.007. Weaning height showed low and positive genetic associations with GL (0.138 ±â€¯0.007) and CI (0.189 ±â€¯0.016), but was not correlated with DC (-0.016 ±â€¯0.011). Similarly, weaning weight, yearling height or yearling weight was not associated with any of the female reproductive traits. The genetic correlations between scrotal circumference and female reproductive traits were negative and favorable, but low: -0.116 ±â€¯0.020 (GL), -0.084 ±â€¯0.028 (DC), and -0.054 ±â€¯0.038 (CI). Favorable genetic associations were estimated between all female reproductive traits, ranging from 0.170 ±â€¯0.040 to 0.442 ±â€¯0.050. Genetic changes were favorable for GL and CI (-0.02 days/year and -0.11 days/year, respectively) and unfavorable for DC (0.16 days/year). In conclusion, selection for higher growth using the estimated breeding values for height and weight will not affect the reproductive performance of Nelore females. Nonetheless, simultaneous selection for growth and reproductive traits is possible.

Cattle wounds are a constant surgical and clinical challenge, leading to important economical losses. The latex from the sap of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) has therapeutic potential to enhance tissue repair process. Therefore, we evaluated the type of tissue reaction and possible mechanisms of angiogenesis triggered by implanting natural latex rubber in bovine species. Six Nelore bovines were subjected to subcutaneous experimental implant of three fragments of natural rubber latex membranes. Tissue and rubber membrane samples were harvested at 15, 30 and 45 days implantation for histology, scanning electron microscopy and immunohistochemical evaluation with anti macrophage marker (MAC), anti CYR 61, anti VEGF antibodies. The latex membrane estimulates tissue reaction and repair and significant angiogenesis stimuli without activating CYR 61 and VEGF pathways.(AU)

RESUMO

The female reproductive performance, productivity and size are strongly associated with production efficiency of herds raised in a tropical environment. The age at first calving (AFC), accumulated productivity (AP), stayability (STAY) and mature weight (MW) could be used as indicators of these traits. In this study, the genetic parameters and correlations between AFC, AP, STAY and MW measured in Nellore females were estimated, in order to provide support for the beef cattle evaluation programs. In addition, the genetic changes for these traits were obtained. The (co)variance components were estimated by Gibbs sampling by four-trait multivariate analysis, using a threshold animal model for STAY and linear animal model for the other traits (AFC, AP and MW). Heritability of AFC, AP and STAY showed low values, with posterior means of 0.13 ± 0.02, 0.14 ± 0.01 and 0.19 ± 0.03, respectively. On the other hand, for MW were estimated mean heritability of 0.44 ± 0.03 and repeatability of 0.77 ± 0.03, demonstrating the importance of genetic and permanent environmental effects for the expression of beef cows' size. The AFC showed null genetic correlation with AP (-0.06 ± 0.12) and MW (0.01 ± 0.09) and low and negative with STAY (-0.15 ± 0.11). The AP showed high genetic correlation with STAY (0.86 ± 0.03) and weak with MW (0.23 ± 0.09). Positive and moderate genetic association was estimated between STAY and MW (0.66 ± 0.05). Annual direct genetic trends of 0.19 kg, 0.30 units and 0.10 kg were estimated for AP, STAY and MW, respectively, and were significant (P < 0.05) for STAY and MW. For AFC, negative and favorable annual genetic change was estimated (-0.08 months, P < 0.05). In this population, the selection of heifers for an early reproductive age should have little influence, however favorable, in the time that the cows remain in the herd. The use of AP as a selection criterion should result in smaller changes in the females' mature weight when compared to selection based on STAY.

RESUMO

Neuropsychiatric disorders associated with systemic lupus erythematosus are very common. Treatment generally consists of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive therapy; however, some cases are unresponsive. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a recognized treatment modality in psychiatry and is an option for refractory cases of neuropsychiatric lupus. This report describes three cases of neuropsychiatric lupus that improved with ECT after failure of antipsychotics and immunosuppressive therapy. All cases met DSM-5 criteria for catatonia (case 1: agitation, stereotypies, and grimacing; case 2: stupor, mutism, and grimacing; case 3: agitation, mutism, and stereotypies); therefore, ECT was indicated. This case series shows that ECT can be a therapeutic option in patients with neuropsychiatric lupus, especially when associated with catatonia and unresponsive to conventional treatment.

RESUMO

Dengue virus, commonly transmitted by mosquitoes, causes a human disease of significant social impact and presents a serious public health problem in Brazil. This report describes the unusual emergence of DENV-4 in northern Brazil after a nearly 30-year-long absence. DENV-4 genotype I is of Asian origin and was identified in the serum of patients receiving treatment at a hospital serving the Salvador area (Brazilian state of Bahia). The identification of dengue virus serotypes through molecular and phylogenetic analysis is essential for predicting disease severity or fatal illness, principally in endemic countries such as Brazil.

RESUMO

Pedigree information available for Angus (ANG), Devon (DEV), Hereford (HER), and Shorthorn (SHO) cattle in Brazil was analyzed to appraise the genetic diversity and population structure of these breeds. Pedigree records collected from the beginning of the 20th century until 2010 were used in the analyses. Over time, the number of herdbook registrations declined in HER after a peak in the 1970s, remained low in DEV and SHO, and increased steadily in ANG since the 1990s, such that it the latter is now the leading British cattle breed in Brazil. The average number of offspring registered per sire ranged from about 12 (SHO) to 20 (DEV) and the mean generation interval ranged from about 6.0 (HER and SHO) to 6.4 (ANG) years. In the reference population (calves born in 2009 and 2010, plus those born in 2008 for SHO) the mean equivalent number of generations known ranged from about 7 (SHO) to 9 (HER). In the 4 breeds studied, nearly all animals born over the last few years are inbred, even though the mean level of inbreeding in the reference population is below 4% in all breeds. The rate of inbreeding per generation, computed from the individual increase in inbreeding, ranged from about 0.2 (ANG) to 0.5% (DEV), with a corresponding effective population size of 245 and 92, respectively, which is above the recommended minimum critical threshold. The number of founders/ancestors contributing with 50% of the reference population gene pool was 211/26 for ANG, 41/14 for DEV, 164/25 for HER, and 79/10 for SHO, with effective number of founders/ancestors/founder genomes of 470/68/36, 89/33/16, 289/59/30, and 200/28/18 for ANG, DEV, HER, and SHO, respectively. The genetic contribution of different countries to the gene pool of each breed indicated that, throughout the period studied, DEV genes originated predominantly from the United Kingdom, while for the other breeds there was a changing pattern over time. Until the 1970s Argentina was the major supplier of ANG, while HER and SHO genes were mostly from Uruguay, but since then the United States took the leading role as supplier of ANG, HER, and SHO genes to Brazil. Our results reveal a mild increase in inbreeding in all breeds studied, with effective population size estimates indicating that reasonable levels of genetic diversity have been maintained in all 4 breeds. Continuous monitoring of inbreeding trends and of parameters derived from probability of gene origin should be ensured to warrant the long-term maintenance of genetic diversity.

RESUMO

A bioeconomic model was developed to calculate economic values for biological traits in full-cycle production systems and propose selection indices based on selection criteria used in the Brazilian Aberdeen Angus genetic breeding programme (PROMEBO). To assess the impact of changes in the performance of the traits on the profit of the production system, the initial values of the traits were increased by 1%. The economic values for number of calves weaned (NCW) and slaughter weight (SW) were, respectively, R$ 6.65 and R$ 1.43/cow/year. The selection index at weaning showed a 44.77% emphasis on body weight, 14.24% for conformation, 30.36% for early maturing and 10.63% for muscle development. The eighteen-month index showed emphasis of 77.61% for body weight, 4.99% for conformation, 11.09% for early maturing, 6.10% for muscle development and 0.22% for scrotal circumference. NCW showed highest economic impact, and SW had important positive effect on the economics of the production system. The selection index proposed can be used by breeders and should contribute to greater profitability.

This work was carried out to characterize and evaluate five bovine rotavirus, monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), as a diagnosis tool, by isotyping, dot-blot, western-blot, indirect immunofluorescence (IFI) and ELISA techniques. The immunochemistry characterization showed that all five MAbs (4F7, 4F3, 1G5, 1E12 and 3C12) were IgG2a isotype. The dot-blot immunoassay showed that 1G5, 4F7, 1E12 and 4F3 detected viral antigen in different concentrations and two MAbs (1E12 and 4F3) recognized viral proteins by western-blot. All MAbs detected viral antigen in bovine and human fecal samples by capture ELISA technique and viral antigen in infected MA-104 cell culture by IFI. In conclusion, two groups of Mabs were indetified: one with Mabs 4F7, 1E12 and 1G5 showed the best results to detect rotavirus antigen in fecal samples by capture ELISA or dot-blot techniques assay and other with 4F3 and 3C12 which may be used to detect rotavirus antigens in cell culture by IFI. The results showed the potential use of these MAbs as diagnosis tools in diarrheas by rotavirus in bovines.(AU)
