The aim of the present work was to evaluate a physical-chemical and microbiological quality of natural water industries from one located in the city of São José de Ribamar - MA and the evaluation of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Water collections were done at several specific points in the industry, namely: well, filter I type bag, filter II type bag, filter III type polisher, reservoir I, reservoir II, filter IV type polisher, filling area and laboratory, and microbiological analysis were performed using the Colilert® rapid test (research of 35ºC coliforms as well as Escherichia coli) and physical-chemical analysis (electrical conductivity, hydrogen potential, total solids and turbidity). The application of checklist was based in the Resolution RDC No . 173 of September 2006 from ANVISA. The result of analyzes physical-chemical and microbiological are within normal limits and in accordance with the parameters changed by the RDC legislation No . 274/2005 of National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA).(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes is a risk factor for future development of type 2 diabetes. The primary aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of postpartum glucose tolerance status evaluation in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes 6-12 weeks after delivery. The secondary one was to identify the factors that are implicated with postpartum glucose retesting. METHODS: This was a retrospective study performed with a cohort of women with gestational diabetes, with prenatal care and delivery at a tertiary care center, from January 2013 to April 2017. The diagnosis of gestational diabetes was based on IADPSG criteria (Fasting ≥ 92 mg/dl, 1 h ≥ 180 mg/dl and/or 2 h ≥ 153 mg/dl, respectively) and the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes were made using the 2016 ADA's criteria (fasting and 2 h after glucose load ≥ 126 mg/dl and/or ≥ 200 and 100-125 mg/dl and/or 140 and 199 mg/dl, respectively). All women had an appointment scheduled 6-12 weeks postpartum with the results of a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). RESULTS: Of the 152 evaluated women, 21 (13.8%) returned with the postpartum OGTT results. Of these, 9 (45.0%) had a diagnosis of prediabetes. The use of insulin during gestation was the only factor implicated in a higher adherence rate to postpartum testing OR 6.33 (p 0.002). No significance was found for other demographic and clinical variables (age, family income, years of study, parity, gestational age at first visit, smoking, family history of type 2 diabetes, diagnosis of gestational diabetes before the third trimester, pregestational body mass index, previous history of gestational diabetes and ethnicity). CONCLUSION: The majority of patients with gestational diabetes did not return postpartum to perform OGTT and in our study the only factor implicated in a higher postpartum return was the use of insulin during pregnancy. Considering that 45.0% were diagnosed with prediabetes, diabetes care teams should initially identify non-adherent patients.

RESUMO

Parasitic diseases caused by pathogenic protozoa remain a challenge for public health. Despite efforts to control transmission, to improve early diagnosis and to optimize patient care, millions of infected people, mainly in poor areas of the globe, develop debilitating pathologies that are often fatal. For most of those disorders, the current treatments are greatly unsatisfactory and the continuous search for alternative chemotherapies remains at the center of research. Over the last decades, cysteine peptidases of protozoa feature as highly promising drug targets and their validation in laboratory models of disease or experimental infections instigated growing efforts in medicinal chemistry, aiming at the development of compounds with therapeutical potential. More recently, it was uncovered that protozoa also express new families of endogenous proteinaceous peptidase inhibitors that act as potential virulence factors. In this review, we will cover the main findings that contributed to the validation of cysteine peptidases from Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania as drug targets and the current knowledge of their biological roles in those organisms. We give an overview of the development of small molecule cysteine peptidase inhibitors with anti-parasite activity and describe the current background on natural peptidase inhibitors in trypanosomatids.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obesity has been linked to metabolic syndrome (MS), which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Polymorphisms of Apolipoprotein E have also been associated with increased CVD risk. Therefore, this study investigated the association between MS and Apo E polymorphisms. METHODS: We measured anthropometric and biochemical variables and determined the Apo E genotype of 147 grade III obese patients. RESULTS: The percentage of female subjects was 86.4%. The mean age and BMI of the subjects were 41 years and 53.5 kg/m(2), respectively. MS had been diagnosed in 79% of the subjects. The proportions of those exhibiting MS risk factors were as follows: 100% had a high BMI, 80% had hypertension, 65% had low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), 38% had diabetes, and 39% had hypertriglyceridemia. We found five genotypes for which the allelic distribution was different in the MS group compared to the general population. The ε4 allele was more frequent in the group with neither MS nor hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: The morbidly obese patients exhibited a higher incidence of MS and a different allelic distribution when compared with other populations. The ε4 allele was associated with the absence of MS and hypertension.
