BACKGROUND: The use of chemotherapy for cervical squamous cell carcinoma has shown some positive results. Total percentage of complete plus partial responses are near 30% with the use of single cytotoxic agents. Higher percentages are achievable with combined chemotherapy including platinum but the lack of evidence that current chemotherapy can increase survival, coupled with a devastating worldwide mortality, indicates the urgent need for more effective therapies. OBJECTIVE: To further assess the role of 13-cis-Retinoic acid (13-cRA) plus interferon alfa (IFN-alfa) in a prospective phase II trial in advanced cervical cancer. METHODS: Thirty two women with untreated cervical carcinoma, with median age of 42 years (24 to 60 years) and median Zubrod performance of 1 (range 0-2) were treated for at least two months with oral 13-cRA (1 mg/kg/day) and IFN-alfa 2a (subcutaneously, 6 million units daily). RESULTS: Sixteen patients (50%) had major responses, including four complete clinical responses. Major response rate in regard to disease stage were 100% in the four patients with stage IVA, 36% (4/11) in stage IIIB, 50% (4/8) in stage IIB, 50% (1/2) in stage IIA, and 43% (3/7) in stage IB. Remission of the cancer in 15 patients was reached after only two months of treatment and in one patient within one month. Dose escalations after two months of therapy in nonresponding patients had no effect. Toxicity to treatment was manageable. Twenty one patients had poorly differentiated tumors. CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary results indicate that systemic 13-cRA plus IFN-alfa 2a is a highly active, well tolerated therapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix, with potential to be used in the primary, adjuvant and salvage therapy of cervical cancer. This therapy warrants further study.

We report a case of myocardial ischemia induced by cocaine. The ischemia probably induced by coronary artery spasm was reversed by nitroglycerin and calcium blocking agents.

This is a descriptive study with the purpose of reporting the most important clinical findings observed upon admission of the first fifty patients to the Epilepsy Intensive Monitoring Unit. For example: Reason for referral, history, distribution by age and sex, precipitating factors and diagnostic study findings. The utility of intensive monitoring is evidenced in the diagnosis and management of patients with complicated epilepsy and in the diagnosis of other neurologic conditions as are movement disorders; tics and other. With the use of this technic, 68% of the patients were correctly diagnosed, which provided for adequate recommendation of the optimal therapeutic regimen.

Syncope or near-syncope can be the manifestation of a benign problem or a symptom of a life-threatening disease. Vasovagal syncope accounting for almost 70 per cent of cases. We identified 5 young patients who were presented to us with syncope or near-syncope. Diagnostic test, such as electrocardiogram, Holter monitoring and electrophysiological study identified only markers of hypervagotonia. We treated them with oral propantheline. By the time of follow up (20 months) none had recurrent episodes of syncope. Propantheline can be useful in patients with symptomatic vagotonia.

This correspondence describes a moving target tracking (MTT) algorithm that performs image registration and motion analysis between pairs of images from a passive sensor. Unlike previously reported moving target indicators that operate at the signal level, the registration and motion analysis in the MTT is totally performed at a symbolic level. The operation of the MTT is demonstrated by simulation results obtained from applications of the algorithm to infrared images.

Para separar la fraccion celular del medio de cultivo se utilizaron cuatro acidos en la precipitacion de vacuna pertussis: citrico, fosforico, clorhidrico y acetico.Se efectuaron pruebas de toxicidad y potencia de las fracciones del cultivo y del cultivo completo. La que mejores resultados presento en cuanto a potencia y disminucion de toxicidad fue la fraccion bacteriana precipitada con acido citrico
