RESUMO

The first case of COVID-19 in South America occurred in Brazil on February 25, 2020. By July 20, 2020, there were 2,118,646 confirmed cases and 80,120 confirmed deaths. To assist with the development of preventive measures and targeted interventions to combat the pandemic in Brazil, we present a geographic study to detect "active" and "emerging" space-time clusters of COVID-19. We document the relationship between relative risk of COVID-19 and mortality, inequality, socioeconomic vulnerability variables. We used the prospective space-time scan statistic to detect daily COVID-19 clusters and examine the relative risk between February 25-June 7, 2020, and February 25-July 20, 2020, in 5570 Brazilian municipalities. We apply a Generalized Linear Model (GLM) to assess whether mortality rate, GINI index, and social inequality are predictors for the relative risk of each cluster. We detected 7 "active" clusters in the first time period, being one in the north, two in the northeast, two in the southeast, one in the south, and one in the capital of Brazil. In the second period, we found 9 clusters with RR > 1 located in all Brazilian regions. The results obtained through the GLM showed that there is a significant positive correlation between the predictor variables in relation to the relative risk of COVID-19. Given the presence of spatial autocorrelation in the GLM residuals, a spatial lag model was conducted that revealed that spatial effects, and both GINI index and mortality rate were strong predictors in the increase in COVID-19 relative risk in Brazil. Our research can be utilized to improve COVID-19 response and planning in all Brazilian states. The results from this study are particularly salient to public health, as they can guide targeted intervention measures, lowering the magnitude and spread of COVID-19. They can also improve resource allocation such as tests and vaccines (when available) by informing key public health officials about the highest risk areas of COVID-19.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Participatory research can help to broaden the understanding of medical systems and beliefs of traditional communities. An ethnopharmacological survey in collaboration with local people focused on plants used in quilombos located in Southeast Region in Brazil identified cultural factors that influence plant and recipe choice. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the factors related to the therapeutic efficiency of medicinal plants from the perspective of Quilombo da Fazenda residents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: University researchers collaborated with community residents for both aims and methods of the study. The local partners were trained in the gathering of ethnopharmacological data and then selected and interviewed the residents considered experts on the use of medicinal plants. Data on the use of each species were supported by voucher specimens collected by the local partners and university researchers. Participant observations and field diaries by the university researchers supplemented the data. RESULTS: Eight interviewees mentioned 92 medicinal species with 60 therapeutic uses, applied in 208 recipes or remedies. Asteraceae (13 species), Lamiaceae (5) and Urticaceae (5) contributed most medicinal plant species. Of the 12 etic categories of use, the circulatory system category had the highest number of plants mentioned. Decoction was the most commonly used preparation method (66.8%), and most remedies were administered orally (76.4%). Eighty-six recipes included more than one plant species and/or the addition of other components, such as sugar, salt or animal products. Several cultural factors influence medicinal plant use. Popular beliefs on the quality of blood or the humoral properties of plants and illnesses, characteristics of the plants and other factors determine which plant is used and why. CONCLUSIONS: The participatory method identified a large number of factors that influence medicinal plant use: the patient's blood type; the condition of the plant and the disease (hot-cold system); the route of administration and dosage; the preventive uses of the plants; and the influence of other factors, such as the sun, the moon and dew. The participatory approach is useful for gaining insight on the decision processes of medicinal plant use in traditional societies, and also for those communities wanting to document their knowledge with or without the participation of the academy.

The present study aimed to assess the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and antigenotoxic activities of sucupira oil (Pterodon emarginatus), which is commonly used as an anti-rheumatic, analgesic, antimicrobial, anticercariae, and anti-inflammatory. We used the mouse bone marrow micronucleus test as an experimental model. The experimental groups, which consisted of 5 animals, was administered sucupira oil (100 mg/kg body weight) intraperitoneally and evaluated 24 h after the treatment. The negative control group was treated with sterile distilled water, and the positive control group received an intraperitoneal dose of 4 mg/kg mitomycin C, a dose that corresponds to 80% of its median lethal dose. Cytotoxicity was determined by the polychromatic to normochromatic erythrocytes ratio (PCE/NCE). Sucupira oil had no significant effects (P > 0.05) on the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes as compared to the negative control group. However, the difference was significant (P < 0.005) as compared to the positive control group. The PCE/NCE (100 mg/kg oil and 4 mg/kg mitomycin) ratio did not differ between the experimental group and the positive control group, but it differed significantly when compared to the negative control group (P < 0.05). Thus, these findings suggested that the P. emarginatus oil showed no cytotoxic, mutagenic, or antimutagenic activities at a dose of 100 mg/kg.

The measurement of the serum concentration of the acute-phase reactant C-reactive protein (CRP) provides a useful marker in clinical practice. However, the distribution of CRP is not available for all age and population groups. This study assessed the distribution of high sensitivity-CRP (hs-CRP) by gender and age in 1470 elderly individuals from a Brazilian community that participates in the Bambuí Cohort Study. Blood samples were collected after 12 h of fasting and serum samples were stored at -70°C. Measurements were made with a commercial hs-CRP immunonephelometric instrument. More than 50% of the results were above 3.0 mg/L for both genders. Mean hs-CRP was higher in women (3.62 ± 2.58 mg/L) than in men (3.03 ± 2.50 mg/L). This difference was observed for all ages, except for the over-80 age group. This is the first population-based study to describe hs-CRP values in Latin American elderly subjects. Our results indicate that significant gender differences exist in the distribution of hs-CRP, and suggest that gender-specific cut-off points for hs-CRP would be necessary for the prediction of cardiovascular risks.

RESUMO

Em 35 pacientes da clinica de esterilidade foi colhida uma biopsia do endometrio e, no mesmo dia,foi feita uma dosagem da progesterona plasmatica pela tecnica de radioimunoensaio, com o objetivo de avaliar a funcao lutea. Compararam-se os resultados e concluiu-se que a biopsia do endometrio traz mais subsidios para o diagnostico da ovulacao e para uma avaliacao geral do orgao onde deve ocorrer a nidacao.A dosagem unica da progesterona plasmatica nao permite uma avaliacao correta da funcao lutea quando o resultado obtido fica abaixo da faixa de variacao normal, porem acima de 2 ng/ml
