RESUMO

Branchial Cysts are uncommon anomalies in regular clinical practice. However, among congenital cervical cysts, they represent about 30% from total. Objective: Characterize patients diagnosed with operated branquial cyst in our clinical center, and correlate clinic, imaging and final diagnose. Material and methods: Retrospective descriptive study of discharged patients diagnosed as cervical cysts, between January 2005 and July 2011, at Hospital Clinico Universidad de Chile. Selection of Clinical records with final diagnose of branchial cyst were selected. Age, sex, clinical story, imaging exams, pre-operative and post-operative diagnoses, and biopsy report were registered. Results: from a total of 149 cervical cysts, 31 (20,8%) were branchial cysts. Man 45% and women 55%. By age, 9 (29%) were < 15 years old (average: 6,69 years) and 22 (70,9%) > 15 years (average: 33,7 years). Lateral cervical mass was the most common clinical manifestation. Regarding Imaging study, 15 cervical ultrasounds (sensibility 0,86 and specificity 0,98) and 13 cervical CTA scans (sensibility 0,92 and specificity 0,94) were conducted. In 9 patients, imaging studies weren't conducted for the clinical diagnose (sensibility 0,77 and specificity 0,98). Correlation of pre-operative and post-operative diagnose was 87%. Discussion: According to literature, presentation age is generally during childhood; however, in our statistics it presented during adult age, which could be explained due to the main focus our medical center has for adult population. Most common clinical presentation was lateral neck mass, which had a good clinical correlation, however improves with imaging studies. (AU)

Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the most serious obstetrics complications with significant maternal morbidity and mortality. Uterine arteries ligature is part of the chain of therapeutic procedures. This communication presents a patient with postpartum hemorrhage treated with vaginal uterine arteries ligature with cessation of bleeding after the intervention and recovery without complications.

RESUMO

The biology of planktotrophic larvae of Concholepas concholepas is the main bottleneck towards developing biotechnologies to rear this muricid. Data concerning planktonic larvae development, diets and environmental signals triggering larval settlement and recruitment is scarce. We have begun the study of the molecular and cell biology of embryos, larvae and recruits having as a final goal, the development of appropriate biotechnologies to rear this gastropod. First, an inverse ratio between BuChE and AChE enzyme activities was established. This ratio may be a precise developmental marker for this species. Second, for the first time a phosphoinositide related regulatory pathway is reported in a muricid, opening a new approach to the biotechnological management of larvae. Third, the relation between sulfate in sea water and larval motility was studied. Concentrations below 125 microM sulfate decreases larval motility. The sulfate is incorporated in proteoglycans which participate in different developmental phenomena. Lastly, a genomic Concholepas concholepas DNA sequence, similar to that of a human growth hormone probe was detected. This is very interesting since growth factors are key molecules during development, growth and are involved in food conversion rates in fish and also, in a variety of marine invertebrates.

RESUMO

Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of cortico-nigral fibers in the brain which may use L-glutamic or L-aspartic acid as their transmitters. Such cortico-nigral neuronal pathway seems to functionally interact with intrinsic neuronal systems in substantia nigra (SN) by first activating different subtypes of excitatory amino acid (EAA) receptors. Particularly interesting are results showing that activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) subtype receptor may evoke the Ca(2+)-dependent release of dopamine from dendrites of nigro-striatal neurons. In addition, NMDA and other EAA receptors may influence the functional activity of gabaergic, glycinergic and peptidergic neurons located in SN. Acidic aminoacid-containing neurons in SN may thus play a pivotal role in determining the outflow information from SN to caudal motor-related as well as rostral limbic-related areas in the brain.
