RESUMO

Background: Rectal tumors are uncommon in dogs and cats. The clinical signs result from intra- and extraluminal compression. Diagnosis and treatment of rectal tumors are challenging due to their intraplevic location. Owing to considerable bonesuperposition, computed tomography is the best exam to evaluate the tumor and plan surgery; however, poor availabilityand high costs may hinder its use. The objective of this case report is to describe the successful use of a combination ofdiagnostic techniques, namely transrectal ultrasound, transrectal fine-needle aspiration, and colonoscopy, for diagnosisand surgery planning in a case of intrapelvic intestinal leiomyoma in a dog.Case: A 13-year-old female mongrel dog with tenesmus, low stool production, and hematochezia for two months was presented for examination. During this two-month period, a symptomatic treatment was administered, but there was no clinicalimprovement. In the clinical evaluation revealed a painless mass on the left dorsolateral region, at a depth of around 4 cm,with considerable luminal reduction. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a mass close to the descending colon; however, bonesuperposition precluded identification of its origin or delimitation of its boundaries. The patient was subjected to transrectalultrasound imaging, colonoscopy, and cytological examination of fine-needle aspiration biopsy material collected under generalanesthesia. The mass was located at the final portion of the descending colon; it was extraluminal, and measured around 7 x7 cm. The integrity of the intestinal wall was preserved. Next, radiographic examination of the thorax using three projections(ventrodorsal, left lateral, and right lateral) was performed to check for metastases, and no alteration was detected. Cytologysuggested presence of leiomyoma. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy with pubic osteotomy for intrapelvic access...(AU)

RESUMO

Background: Trauma is the main cause of spinal fractures and dislocations in humans and large animals. Clinical signspresent with acute onset and vary according to the location and severity of the spinal cord injury. The treatment of fractures in large animals depends on economic value, cost of procedures, prognosis, location and type of fracture. However, although spinal fractures in large animals are not uncommon, the literature about their clinical aspects and treatment isscanty. Therefore, the purpose of this report is to describe a surgical stabilization of atlantoaxial subluxation, fracture ofthe third cervical vertebra and C2-C3 subluxation.Case: An approximately 2-year-old Île-de-France sheep, weighing 101 kg, with a history of cervical trauma and nonambulatory tetraparesis was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Institution (UNIPAMPA). During physical examination, the animal presented good general physical condition and heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature was accordingto physiological parameters for the species. The animal remained in lateral decubitus, with minimal head and limb movements, and exhibited deep pain sensitivity. Clinical treatment with dexamethasone, limb physiotherapy and change inlateral decubitus position were employed, but failed to improve the animals condition. After five days of unresponsive toclinical treatment, the patient was referred to the neurology department, where it underwent neurological examination andradiographic examination of the cervical region was performed under general anesthesia. The radiographic examinationrevealed atlantoaxial subluxation, by displacement of the odontoid process into the vertebral canal, fracture of the thirdcervical vertebra and C2-C3 vertebral subluxation. The surgical planning aimed cervical vertebral instability repair usingatlantoaxial arthrodesis associated the stabilization of C1-C2 and C2-C3 vertebrae with Schanz pins and bone cement...(AU)

RESUMO

A 2-year-old creole filly was referred to us for evaluation because of the clinical suspicion of infection by Streptococcus equi. It presented with progressive weight loss and increased volume of the submandibular, retropharyngeal, and precrural lymph nodes. General clinical examinations and laboratory tests revealed dehydration, anemia, leukopenia, hyperfibrinogenemia, and thrombocytopenia. The initial treatment for equine adenitis did not achieve significant results, and new hematological and biochemical tests and lymph node cytology by puncture were performed. Cytology revealed cells compatible with neoplastic lymphocytes, resulting in the suspicion of lymphoma. The animal died from general weakness and was sent for autopsy. Macroscopically, generalized lymphadenomegaly and splenomegaly were observed, with multiple nodules and tumor lesions in the splenic parenchyma. There was an irregular nodule in the medullary layer of the right kidney. The liver and lungs were slightly enlarged, with petechiae and multifocal suffusions. Histopathological evaluation of different organ specimens revealed intense proliferation of the neoplastic lymphoid cells, invading the adjacent tissues, with moderate cellular pleomorphism. Immunohistochemistry of the lymph node sections with neoplastic infiltration revealed multicentric T-cell lymphoma. In horses, cases of lymphomas are rare and should be differentiated from other causes that induce lymphadenomegaly in this species.(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of joint fusion and bone formation in dogs undergoing atlantoaxial arthrodesis after removal of articular cartilage associated or not to implant homogenous or autogenous cancellous bone. Twelve dogs, weighing between 8 and 12kg were randomly divided into three groups. Group I (GI) performed only the removal of joint cartilage and joint immobilization with acrylic resin and pins. Group II (GII): after removel of joint cartilage and articular immobilization was performed modeling and placement of homogenous cancellous bone at the given location. The volume of homograft placed in the joint was measured using a precision balance and all animals received the same amount. Group III (GIII): this was the same procedure as GI, however, was used autogenous cancellous bone graft at the given location. Radiographic examinations were performed on all animals at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. At 90 days of PO was carried out euthanasia of animals for testing of manual palpation and CT evaluation and histological. Samples were kept in solution in 10% buffered formaldehyde for fixation for a minimum of 72 hours and after, decalcified in formic acid and sodium citrate for subsequent processing and included in paraffin. Sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for light microscopy evaluation. Statistical analysis of the association between the degree of joint fusion assessed by manual palpation, the digitized radiographic images and CT scans and treatment groups, we applied the Chi-square test of independence. The test results were evaluated by the exact significance and considered statistically significant at 5% significance (P<0.05). By manual palpation test and by the CT images can be seen that there was no statistically significant difference between groups at 90 days postoperatively. Radiographic analysis of the atlantoaxial joint showed that the degree of fusion was similar among treatments, no statistical difference at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. Regarding the histopathological study of atlantoaxial joint of dogs after 90 days postoperatively was found that bone formation in group I had 25% of each intensity (absent, mild, moderate, severe) in group II, 75% lighter and 25% sharp and in group III, 25% moderate and 75% severe. It can be concluded that the use of graft homogenous preserved in 98% glycerin in dogs undergoing atlantoaxial fusion method is a viable alternative for treatment of atlantoaxial instability. There is no difference in the degree of joint fusion and bone formation when the technique of atlantoaxial arthrodesis in dogs is associated with autogenous cancellous bone graft or implant homogenous. The removal of articular cartilage alone is an effective and shows similar results to the use of autograft or homogenous implant.

A 3-year-old, mixed breed, male horse showed multiple nodules in different areas of the skin. Lesions occurred predominantly on the lips, cheeks, and submandibular and right inguinal regions. The nodules were characterized as mixed, fibroblastic, verrucous and occult types of sarcoid. Histologically there was proliferation of dermal fibroblasts, with or without pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia of the epidermis (frequently ulcerated), and formation of small isolated groups of neoplastic fibroblasts in the superficial dermis. Three tissue samples were submitted to DNA extraction and PCR amplification with generic primers for the internal region of the papillomavirus L1 gene. The amplified products from two samples were sequenced and showed 99 percent identity with the bovine papillomavirus (BPV) BR-UEL-4. This is the first description of BPV BR-UEL-4 infecting a horse and causing sarcoid in this species. BPV BR-UEL-4 is a putative new BPV type recently identified in skin papillomas in a Brazilian cattle herd.

RESUMO

An outbreak of severe cutaneous disease associated with an orthopoxvirus in horses in southern Brazil is described. Fourteen Crioulo mares and foals from a husbandry farm developed papules, and vesicles progressing to proliferative and exudative lesions on the muzzle, external nares, and external and internal lips. The vesicles eroded, and the proliferative lesions eventually bled and progressed to moist crusts and scars. The clinical signs lasted approximately 6-12 days, after which the animals progressively recovered. Direct electron microscopy of skin biopsies revealed brick-shaped, 250-300-nm virus particles with orthopoxvirus morphology. Histological examination of the lesions revealed vacuolar degeneration of the cells of the stratum spinosum and the presence of large intracytoplasmic, eosinophilic inclusion bodies. Polymerase chain reaction amplification of poxvirus A-type inclusion body gene confirmed the presence of orthopoxvirus DNA in horse tissues. Inoculation of tissue homogenates into the chorioallantoic membrane of chicken embryonated eggs and intraperitoneally in mice resulted in pock-like lesions with the microscopic appearance of poxvirus-induced histopathology. Taken together, these results demonstrate the association of an orthopoxvirus with the outbreak of cutaneous disease in horses. The origin of the agent causing the outbreak is uncertain because no similar condition has been reported in Brazil.

RESUMO

Background: Lymphosarcoma is a malignant tumor from tumoral cells similar to lymphocytes and its spontaneous development in small ruminants is unusual in Brazil. In cattle, the lymphosarcomas are often associated with infection by bovine leukemia virus (BLV), although sheep are considered as a very susceptible specie to BLV. Spontaneously lymphosarcoma is rare and in most cases it is observed in apparently healthy animals in slaughterhouses. There is no report of this tumor in sheep in southern Brazil. We describe a case of spontaneous multicentric B-cells lymphosarcoma in an ewe. Case: In June 2007, a 4-years-old mixed breed ewe was necropsied after clinical signs as anorexia, weight loss and death in few weeks. This ewe was purchased in September 2006 with another 44 sheep, most females of the same age. Dairy cattle were also raised together with sheep at the same farm. Fragments of liver, lung, spleen, kidneys, brain and parotid lymph node were sent to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory - Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Brazil, for histopathological evaluation. Multiply white to yellow nodules, with 0.5 to 2 cm of diameter, were observed in the liver, kidneys, and the parotid lymph node. The nodules were soft and some coalesced and infiltrating the hepatic parenchyma. The kidneys nodules were similar to those of the liver but prominent in the capsule. They were observed infiltrating more intensely the cortical region. The parotid lymph node was 6 x 4 x 3.5 cm size, whitish, multilobulated and the cut surface was totally obliterated by the tumor mass. Histologically, the neoplasm showed intense proliferation of neoplastic lymphoid cells arranged in sheets and a poor fibrovascular stroma, with round small and hyperchromatic nuclei, and scarce eosinophilic cytoplasm compressing the adjacent parenchyma.(...)

Histologically, the neoplasm showed intense proliferation of neoplastic lymphoid cells arranged in sheets and a poor fibrovascular stroma, with round small and hyperchromatic nuclei, and scarce eosinophilic cytoplasm compressing the adjacent parenchyma.(...)(AU)

Tissues from 27 dogs died from infectious canine hepatitis (ICH) were evaluated by immunohistochemestry (IHC) for detection of canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1) antigen using a monoclonal antibody. Evaluated tissues included liver, kidney, spleen, lymph nodes, tonsils, lungs, small intestine, brain, and spinal cord. For each organ increasing degrees (from mild to marked) of intensity of immune staining were ascribed. CAV-1 was detected in most of the evaluated organs, mainly in the endothelial cells. Considering the clinical course of ICH and the intensity of IHC staining, cases with acute and peracute courses had more marked staining. IHC proved to be a reliable test for CAV-1 antigen detection and can be used for pathogenesis studies on ICH either in the spontaneous and experimental disease.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a pleocellular neoplasm of uncertain cellular origin and poor prognosis. The right diagnosis through immunohistochemical test is difficult and most of the time inconsistent. Clinicopathological features of a MFH in a six-year-old male Rottweiler were described. Additional immunohistochemical data were also provided for diagnosis. The tumor was tested for Masson trichrome, cytokeratin, vimentin, lysozyme, S100 protein, GFAP and NSE. Positive results for vimentin, lyzozyme and S100 protein observed in round and multinucleated cells are characteristic of histiocytes. The result allowed the distinction between the differential diagnosis and suggested an histicytic or pluripotential cell origin. The MFH still remains a diagnostic challenge in dogs and humans
