RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a high demand for health services, especially nursing. This workload can lead to emotional distress affecting their daily lives on a personal and professional basis. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress in nurses and to analyze the factors associated with their presence during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in a second-level hospital in Mexico between September and October 2020. Within a population of 150 nurses invited to the study, 116 participated by answering a questionnaire regarding emotional aspects during their time caring for COVID-19 patients, as well as using the depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21). RESULTS: Among de 116 participants, 77.6% were females, and 22.4% were males. The 91.4% reported fear of spreading the disease to their families, and 59.5% reported that the death of their patients infected with COVID-19 affected them deeply. The factors associated with moderate to extremely severe levels of depression were the attitude of indifference from the community to their work during the pandemic (OR:2.66) and the increase consumption of addictive substances (OR:9.80). In the stress subscale, the variables that conferred a significant association was working inside the COVID-19 area (OR:17.05), being severely affected by the death of patients infected (OR:4.23), and fear of entering the red zone (OR:19.47). The need for psychological care was associated with moderate to severe depression and anxiety (OR:7.38, OR:9.50, respectively). For the anxiety subscale, no association with the studied variables was found. CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates a high prevalence of emotional distress among nurses, and that there were working, psychological and social factors associated with symptoms of depression and stress. Future research should focus on prevention measures and strategies to reduce psychological impact, as this could affect the quality of care provided to their patients.

RESUMO

INTRODUCCIÓN: La calidad de vida (CV) es un aspecto fundamental del tratamiento en pacientes con Atrofia Muscular Espinal (AME). Existe escasa información a nivel local e internacional.

INTRODUCTION: Quality of life (QoL) is a key aspect in the treatment of patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). International information regarding QoL in SMA is scarce, and is not available in our country. OBJECTIVE: To characterize QoL in a sample of Chilean children and adolescents with SMA. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Observational, cross-sectional study. A general questionnaire and the PedsQLTM 3.0 Neuromuscular Module Inventory were applied to parents of children with SMA aged 2 to 18 years. It has three areas: Disease, Communication, and Family. A score >60 was considered as good QoL, 30-60 as regular, and <30 as low. MINITAB-17® software was used, considering significant a p <0.05 value. RESULTS: We recruited 38 patients, with median age 8 years (2-18), 52.63% were male, and 17 (44.7%) with SMA I. All had genetic confirmation. The total score of QoL was 51.92 ± 17, representing 31% good, 55% regular, and 14% low. Regarding SMA I, it was 46.5 ± 15.2 and SMA II-III, 56.3 ± 17.4 (p = 0.071). Concerning the area of Disease, it was 53.83 ± 18.1, Family 48.6 ± 23.14, and Communication 33.3 (IQR: 0.0; 83.33). In this last area, children with SMA II-III, older than 6 years., with non-invasive ventilatory support, or living out of the metropolitan area had hig her scores, however, in multivariate analysis, only SMA type was significant, which explained 40,9% of the variation in the communication area score. CONCLUSIONS: In this sample of SMA pediatric patients, the QoL was regular or good in most of them. The lowest area was communication, with a higher score in those children with higher motor function.

RESUMO

Carcinoma of the prostate, that is adenocarcinoma, is one of the most common malignancies in the male with an estimated incidence for 1991 of 122,000 new cases. On the other hand, squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate, with a median incidence of .5%-1% of all prostatic malignancies, has a similar clinical presentation but differs in treatment response and prognosis. We herein present one case of this histological pattern and review the literature pertaining to it

RESUMO

Crosses were made between Fanny (highly susceptible to blast) and 11 cultivars differing in blast resistance. Using the pedigree method (PM) segregating generations were evaluated and selected for blast resistance. Via anther culture (AC), doubled-haploids were obtained from F1 plants and from F2 blast-susceptible plants. Pedigree and anther culture-derived lines were planted together and evaluated for blast resistance under rainfed conditions at the Santa Rosa Experiment Station, Villavicencio, Colombia. The principal objective was to compare PM and AC in terms of their efficiency in producing rice lines resistant to blast. Results of a stratified analysis showed an association between method and blast resistance. Results of the logit-model analysis showed that AC produced a significantly (P=0.0001) higher proportion of lines with initial blast resistance (leaf- and neck-blast reaction ≤4) than did PM across all cross types. Stable blast resistance was assessed based on field performance over 3 years. AC was superior to PM in generating stable resistance for only some cross types. Consequently, with a few exceptions, AC can be used as effectively as PM to develop rice cultivars resistant to blast, with savings in time and labor. Additionally, blast-resistant lines were obtained either by the pedigree method or by anther culture from crosses between blast-susceptible cultivars (Fanny/CICA4 and Fanny/Colombial). This excludes somaclonal variation as a possible mechanism responsible for this resistance and suggests that a recombination of minor genes could have occurred and was fixed through either method. However, the stability of the resistance was greater in pedigree-derived lines. The implications of these findings for rice blast-resistance breeding are discussed.
