RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing Tifton 85 hay (0, 33, 66, or 100 %) with by castor bean hulls on the intake and nutrient digestibility and performance of 28 noncastrated lambs, averaging 7 months in age, 19.5 ± 2.0 kg average live weight, fed on diets based on forage cactus. The animals were housed in individual pens for 100 days. The digestibility trial occurred 40 days after the start of the performance using LIPE® as an external indicator for estimating fecal dry matter production. The replacement of hay with Castor beans hulls linearly decreased the intakes of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, organic matter, and crude protein and reduced the digestibility coefficients of the dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, organic matter content, crude protein, and total digestible nutrient content. The hot carcass and true carcass yields were not influenced by the treatments and the feed conversion increased linearly. The empty body weight, live weight at slaughter, hot and cold carcass weights, total gain, and average daily gain decreased linearly with the replacement. The replacement of Tifton 85 hay with castor bean hulls reduced the intake of dry matter, crude protein and energy, consequently reducing the performance of the animals. However, as the regression coefficients were of low magnitude, data were subjected to analysis of variance and means were compared using the Dunnett test with diet without castor bean hulls set as the control treatment. The Tifton 85 hay can be replaced up to 66 % by castor bean hulls in finishing diets for lambs.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes fontes proteicas alternativas ao farelo de soja na alimentação de ovinos (torta de mamona, torta de girassol e semente de girassol triturada), sobre o consumo e digestibilidade dos nutrientes e desempenho de 40 ovinos, com peso médio inicial de 19,78± 1,84 kg, alimentados com dietas a base de feno de capim tifton. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos inteiramente casualizados. Os animais foram confinados em baias individuais por um período de 68 dias. O ensaio de digestibilidade ocorreu 50 dias após o início do ensaio de desempenho, utilizando-se o LIPE® como marcador externo. Não foram observadas diferenças (P0,05) pelos tratamentos. No entanto, o tempo em ócio foi maior (P0,05) dos animais que consumiram a dieta com farelo de soja (0,217 kg). A torta de girassol (0,171 kg) e a semente de girassol (0,135 kg) proporcionaram menor ganho de peso (P<0,001) do que o farelo de soja, em função do menor consumo de nutrientes. As dietas compostas por farelo de soja proporcionaram melhor desempenho e custo benefício entre as fontes proteicas estudadas neste trabalho.


This work aimed to evaluate the effect of different protein sources alternatives to soybean meal in diets for lamb (castor bean, sunflower meal and cracked sunflower seeds) on intake and nutrient digestibility also in performance of 40 lamb, with initial weight of 19.78 ± 1.84 kg, fed diets based on Tifton (Cynodon dactylon ssp.) hay. The experimental design was completely randomized blocks. Animals were housed in individual pens for 68 days. The digestibility essay occurred 50 days after the beginning of performance test, using the LIPE ® as an external marker. There were no differences (P 0.05) by treatments. However, in leisure time was higher (P 0.05) from animals fed diet of soybean meal (0.217 kg). The sunflower meal (0.171 kg) and sunflower seeds (0.135 kg) provided less weight gain (P <0.001) than soybean meal, due to lower intake of nutrients. The castor bean is an alternative to be fed to sheep as a replacement for soybean meal, with no reduction in animal performance.
