RESUMO

While the estimate of hospital costs concerns the past, its planning focuses on the future. However, in many low and middle-income countries, public hospitals do not have robust accounting health systems to evaluate and project their expenses. In Brazil, public hospitals are funded based on government estimates of available hospital infrastructure, historical expenditures and population needs. However, these pieces of information are not always readily available for all hospitals. To solve this challenge, we propose a flexible simulation-based optimisation algorithm that integrates this dual task: estimating and planning hospital costs. The method was applied to a network of 17 public hospitals in Brazil to produce the estimates. Setting the model parameters for population needs and future hospital infrastructure can be used as a cost-projection tool for divestment, maintenance, or investment. Results show that the method can aid health managers in hospitals' global budgeting and policymakers in improving fairness in hospitals' financing.

Mefloquine (MQ) is an antimalarial medication prescribed to treat or malaria prevention.. When taken by children, vomiting usually occurs, and new doses of medication frequently need to be taken. So, developing pediatric medicines using taste-masked antimalarial drug complexes is mandatory for the success of mefloquine administration. The hypothesis that binding mefloquine to an ion-exchange resin (R) could circumvent the drug's bitter taste problem was proposed, and solid-state 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR was able to follow MQ-R mixtures through chemical shift and relaxation measurements. The nature of MQ-R complex formation could then be determined. Impedimetric electronic tongue equipment also verified the resinate taste-masking efficiency in vitro. Variations in chemical shifts and structure dynamics measured by proton relaxation properties (e.g., T1ρH) were used as probes to follow the extension of mixing and specific interactions that would be present in MQ-R. A significant decrease in T1ρH values was observed for MQ carbons in MQ-R complexes, compared to the ones in MQ (from 100-200 ms in MQ to 20-50 ms in an MQ-R complex). The results evidenced that the cationic resin interacts strongly with mefloquine molecules in the formulation of a 1:1 ratio complex. Thus, 13C CPMAS NMR allowed the confirmation of the presence of a binding between mefloquine and polacrilin in the MQ-R formulation studied.

The sacred ayahuasca brew, utilized by indigenous communities in the Amazon and syncretic religious groups in Brazil, primarily consists of a decoction of two plants: (i) the Amazonian liana known as Mariri or Jagube (Banisteriopsis caapi), and (ii) the shrub referred as Chacrona or Rainha (Psychotria viridis). While Chacrona leaves are rich in N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a potent psychedelic, the macerated vine of Mariri provides beta-carboline alkaloids acting as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, preventing DMT's degradation. This study sequenced, assembled, and analyzed the complete genome of B. caapi's mitochondrion, yielding a circular structure spanning 503,502 bp. Although the mtDNA encompasses most plant mitochondrial genes, it lacks some ribosomal genes, presents some atypical genes, and contains plastid pseudogenes, suggesting gene transfer between organelles. The presence of a 7-Kb repetitive segment containing copies of the rrnL and trnfM genes suggests mitogenome isomerization, supporting the hypothesis of dynamic mitogenome maintenance in plants. Phylogenetics and phylogenomics across 24 Malpighiales confirms the sample's placement in the "Tucunacá" ethnovariety, aligning with morphological identification. This study spearheads efforts to decode the genome of this esteemed Malpighiaceae.

RESUMO

Komagataella phaffii (formerly Pichia pastoris) is a methylotrophic yeast widely used in laboratories around the world to produce recombinant proteins. Given its advantageous features, it has also gained much interest in the context of modern biotechnology. In this review, we present the utilization of K. phaffii as a platform to produce several products of economic interest such as biopharmaceuticals, renewable chemicals, fuels, biomaterials, and food/feed products. Finally, we present synthetic biology approaches currently used for strain engineering, aiming at the production of new bioproducts.

BACKGROUND: Theobroma grandiflorum (Malvaceae), known as cupuassu, is a tree indigenous to the Amazon basin, valued for its large fruits and seed pulp, contributing notably to the Amazonian bioeconomy. The seed pulp is utilized in desserts and beverages, and its seed butter is used in cosmetics. Here, we present the sequenced telomere-to-telomere genome of cupuassu, disclosing its genomic structure, evolutionary features, and phylogenetic relationships within the Malvaceae family. FINDINGS: The cupuassu genome spans 423 Mb, encodes 31,381 genes distributed in 10 chromosomes, and exhibits approximately 65% gene synteny with the Theobroma cacao genome, reflecting a conserved evolutionary history, albeit punctuated with unique genomic variations. The main changes are pronounced by bursts of long-terminal repeat retrotransposons at postspecies divergence, retrocopied and singleton genes, and gene families displaying distinctive patterns of expansion and contraction. Furthermore, positively selected genes are evident, particularly among retained and dispersed tandem and proximal duplicated genes associated with general fruit and seed traits and defense mechanisms, supporting the hypothesis of potential episodes of subfunctionalization and neofunctionalization following duplication, as well as impact from distinct domestication process. These genomic variations may underpin the differences observed in fruit and seed morphology, ripening, and disease resistance between cupuassu and the other Malvaceae species. CONCLUSIONS: The cupuassu genome offers a foundational resource for both breeding improvement and conservation biology, yielding insights into the evolution and diversity within the genus Theobroma.

Cotton is an important plant-based protein. Cottonseed cake, a byproduct of the biodiesel industry, offers potential in animal supplementation, although the presence of the antinutritional sesquiterpenoid gossypol limits utilization. The macrofungus Panus lecomtei offers potential in detoxification of antinutritional factors. Through an enzymatic and proteomic analysis of P. lecomtei strain BRM044603, grown on crushed whole cottonseed contrasting in the presence of free gossypol (FG), this study investigated FG biodegradation over a 15-day cultivation period. Fungal growth reduced FG to levels at 100 µg/g, with a complex adaptive response observed, involving primary metabolism and activation of oxidative enzymes for metabolism of xenobiotics. Increasing activity of secreted laccases correlated with a reduction in FG, with enzyme fractions degrading synthetic gossypol to trace levels. A total of 143 and 49 differentially abundant proteins were observed across the two contrasting growth conditions after 6 and 12 days of cultivation, respectively, revealing a dynamic protein profile during FG degradation, initially related to constitutive metabolism, then later associated with responses to oxidative stress. The findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms involved in gossypol degradation and highlight the potential of P. lecomtei BRM044603 in cotton waste biotreatment, relevant for animal supplementation, sustainable resource utilization, and bioremediation.

The incidence of chikungunya has dramatically surged worldwide in recent decades, imposing an expanding burden on public health. In recent years, South America, particularly Brazil, has experienced outbreaks that have ravaged populations following the rapid dissemination of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV), which was first detected in 2014. The primary vector for CHIKV transmission is the urban mosquito species Aedes aegypti, which is highly prevalent throughout Brazil. However, the impact of the locally circulating CHIKV genotypes and specific combinations of local mosquito populations on vector competence remains unexplored. Here, we experimentally analyzed and compared the infectivity and transmissibility of the CHIKV-ECSA lineage recently isolated in Brazil among four Ae. aegypti populations collected from different regions of the country. When exposed to CHIKV-infected AG129 mice for blood feeding, all the mosquito populations displayed high infection rates and dissemination efficiency. Furthermore, we observed that all the populations were highly efficient in transmitting CHIKV to a vertebrate host (naïve AG129 mice) as early as eight days post-infection. These results demonstrate the high capacity of Brazilian Ae. aegypti populations to transmit the locally circulating CHIKV-ECSA lineage. This observation could help to explain the high prevalence of the CHIKV-ECSA lineage over the Asian lineage, which was also detected in Brazil in 2014. However, further studies comparing both lineages are necessary to gain a better understanding of the vector's importance in the epidemiology of CHIKV in the Americas.

Mosquitoes are vectors for arboviruses, such as dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya. Symbiotic interactions can affect the intrinsic ability of mosquitoes to acquire and transmit arboviruses, referred to as vector competence. Insect-specific viruses (ISVs) are commonly found in symbiotic associations with mosquitoes in the wild and can affect many aspects of mosquito biology. Here, we review current knowledge on the effects of symbiotic ISV-mosquito interactions on vector competence. We discuss potential mechanisms underlying these interactions and their implications for shaping new biological control strategies. Finally, we highlight the need for field data analyzing the circulation of ISVs in mosquitoes associated with mechanistic studies in the laboratory.

In this work, the polygalacturonase (TL-PG1) from the thermophilic fungus Thermomyces lanuginosus was heterologously produced for the first time in the yeast Komagataella phaffii. The TL-PG1 was successfully expressed under the control of the AOX1 promoter and sequentially purified by His-tag affinity. The purified recombinant pectinase exhibited an activity of 462.6 U/mL toward polygalacturonic acid under optimal conditions (pH 6 and 55 ˚C) with a 2.83 mg/mL and 0.063 µmol/minute for Km and Vmax, respectively. When used as supplementation for biomass hydrolysis, TL-PG1 demonstrated synergy with the enzymatic cocktail Ctec3 to depolymerize orange citrus pulp, releasing 1.43 mg/mL of reducing sugar. In addition, TL-PG1 exhibited efficiency in fabric bioscouring, showing potential usage in the textile industry. Applying a protein dosage of 7 mg/mL, the time for the fabric to absorb water was 19.77 seconds (ten times faster than the control). Adding the surfactant Triton to the treatment allowed the reduction of the enzyme dosage by 50% and the water absorption time to 6.38 seconds. Altogether, this work describes a new versatile polygalacturonase from T. lanuginosus with the potential to be employed in the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass and bioscouring.

Despite great advancements and the diffusion of awake surgery for brain tumors, the literature shows that the tests applied during the procedure are heterogeneous and non-standardized. This prospective, observational, descriptive study collected data on intraoperative brain mapping and the performance of multiple neurocognitive tests in 51 awake surgeries for diffuse low-grade glioma. Frequency of use and rate of intraoperative findings of different neurocognitive tests were analyzed. Patients mean age at the time of surgery was 35.1 (20-57) years. We performed 26 (51.0%) surgeries on the left hemisphere (LH) and 25 (49.0%) on the right hemisphere (RH). Significant differences were observed between the total number of functional findings (cortical and subcortical) identified in the LH and RH (p = 0.004). In subcortical findings alone, the differences remained significant (p = 0.0004). The RH subcortical region showed the lowest number of intraoperative findings, and this was correlated with functional outcome: Karnofsky performance scale at five days (p = 0.022), three months (p = 0.002) and one year (p = 0.002) post-surgery. On average, more tests were used to map the RH, with a lower frequency of both cortical and subcortical functional findings. Even though subcortical findings were less frequent than cortical findings, they were crucial to defining the resection margins. Based on the intraoperative findings, frequency of use, and rate of findings per use of the tests analyzed, the most relevant tests for each hemisphere for awake brain mapping were identified.

Iron ore tailings (IOTs) need to be properly managed to mitigate the environmental, social, and economic impacts of mining activities. To cope with this issue, we use data envelopment analysis (DEA) to evaluate alternatives for using IOT in the construction sector. The classical and weight restriction output-oriented DEA models were used in this analysis. The results show that the ranking of alternatives depends on the aspect being evaluated. Concrete block is the most environmentally friendly alternative when analysing both models. For both social and economic aspects, ceramics produced better results in the classical model, whereas Portland cement showed better outcomes in the weight restriction model. In this sense, the results suggest great potential for the use of IOT in the construction sector, enabling the reduction of risks and social and environmental impacts of tailings dams.

This study evaluated the probability of pregnancy and associated factors for two times artificial inseminations (AI), 8 or 10 hours after automated activity monitoring (AAM) alarm on the first postpartum AI of 1,054 Holstein dairy cows. The estrus was synchronized by prostaglandin or estradiol-progesterone program. Stepwise logistic regression was performed to analyze the probability of pregnancy, and associated factors (activity, estrus intensity, parity, peripartum health, retained placenta, postpartum vaginal discharge, and season). The highest pregnancy rates were obtained with multiparous animals, inseminated ten hours after the AAM alarm, in the fall or winter season, with a high activity peak and estrus intensity (P < 0.05). Peripartum diseases, retained placenta, and postpartum vaginal discharge negatively influenced the pregnancy rate, regardless of parity. Thus, the optimization of AAM models by including on-farm measures like parity, peripartum health history, and environmental conditions may favor the correct identification of estrus and improve the AAM alarm regarding the ideal moment for AI, increasing the reproductive performance in dairy cows.


O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a probabilidade de prenhez e fatores associados para dois horários de inseminação artificial (IA), oito ou 10 horas após o alarme de monitoramento automatizado de atividades (AAM), na primeira IA pós-parto em 1.054 vacas leiteiras da raça Holandês. O estro foi sincronizado por protocolos a base de prostaglandina ou estradiol-progesterona. Regressão logística stepwise foi realizada para analisar a probabilidade de prenhez e fatores associados (atividade, intensidade do estro, paridade, saúde no periparto, placenta retida, descarga vaginal pós-parto e estação do ano). As maiores taxas de prenhez foram obtidas em multíparas, inseminadas 10 horas após o alarme do AAM, no outono ou inverno, com pico de atividade elevado e intensidade de estro (P < 0,05). Doenças no periparto, placenta retida e descarga vaginal pós-parto influenciaram negativamente a taxa de prenhez, independentemente da paridade. Assim, a otimização dos modelos de AAM, incluindo medidas rotineiras da fazenda como paridade, histórico de saúde no periparto e condições ambientais, podem favorecer a identificação correta do estro e melhorar o alarme do AAM em relação ao momento ideal para a IA, aumentando o desempenho reprodutivo nas vacas leiteiras.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different manufacturing procedures (Eli annealed - hot work versus cold worked - cold work) of the raw material under mechanical properties and morphological characteristics of orthodontic miniscrews (MS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty MS were randomly separated into 3 types (n=10) according to manufacturer and manufacturing process of the raw material: type A - SIN® annealed (control group); type B - Dentfix® annealed; and, type C - Dentfix® cold worked. MI were inserted in artificial bone blocks, through the manufacturer's specific manual key attached to the digital torquemeter stabilized via custom device. Data of fracture's occurrence was performed using Fisher's exact test. Comparisons between the other two types regarding insertion torque and removal torque were performed using the Mann-Whitney test. Data of fracture torque, shear stress, normal stress and torque ratio was submitted to Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests (α=0.05). Representative images of surface morphology and fractures were selected. RESULTS: Type C showed statistically the lowest fracture torque (N.cm) (26.11±0.41) (P=0.0012) and highest torque ratio (%) (98.74±0.85) (P=0.0007). Type C showed statistically higher calculated shear (MPa) (2,432.73±508.41) and normal stress (MPa) (1,403.86±293.39) than type B and type A, showing that they differed in relation to the mechanical strength of the material with which they were made (P=0.0007). CONCLUSION: Type A fractured completely inside the most apical bone. Type B and type C fractured closer to the transmucosal profile. Cold worked process should be more prone to fractures than those annealed raw manufactured.

The municipality of Salvador, situated in Brazil, distinguished itself as the epicenter of the emergence of microcephaly related to congenital manifestations of Zika syndrome. Despite the anticipated significant developmental setbacks in these children, research has indicated a varied range of outcomes, with certain instances even reflecting minimal developmental delay. Our objective was to pinpoint determinants that could forecast developmental anomalies in children diagnosed with microcephaly associated with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). METHODOLOGY: A forward-looking clinical and neurodevelopmental examination was conducted focusing on neonates diagnosed with microcephaly with CZS, birthed between September 2015 and April 2016 at the Hospital Geral Roberto Santos, in Salvador city. That infants were monitored up to their third year by a multiprofessional team. Child development was assessed using the composite Bayley III score. Undertaken by two blinded experts, cranial CT scan analysis was performed during the neonate period for the detection of brain abnormalities and to quantify ventricle enlargement, measured by Evans' index (EI). RESULTS: Fifty newborns were evaluated with a median head circumference of 28 cm (interquartile range 27-31 cm). EI was associated with neurodevelopmental delay at three years and remained significant after adjustment for head circumference. A 0.1-point increase in EI was associated with a delay of 3.2 months in the receptive language (p = 0.016), 3.4 months in the expressive language (p = 0.016), 3.4 months in the cognitive (p = 0.016), 2.37 months in the gross motor (p = 0.026), and 3.1 months in the fine motor (p = 0.021) domains. CONCLUSIONS: EI predicted neurodevelopmental delay in all Bayley domains in children with microcephaly associated with CZS.

Parasitoid wasps are fundamental insects for the biological control of agricultural pests. Despite the importance of wasps as natural enemies for more sustainable and healthy agriculture, the factors that could impact their species richness, abundance, and fitness, such as viral diseases, remain almost unexplored. Parasitoid wasps have been studied with regard to the endogenization of viral elements and the transmission of endogenous viral proteins that facilitate parasitism. However, circulating viruses are poorly characterized. Here, RNA viromes of six parasitoid wasp species are studied using public libraries of next-generation sequencing through an integrative bioinformatics pipeline. Our analyses led to the identification of 18 viruses classified into 10 families (Iflaviridae, Endornaviridae, Mitoviridae, Partitiviridae, Virgaviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Chuviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Xinmoviridae, and Narnaviridae) and into the Bunyavirales order. Of these, 16 elements were described for the first time. We also found a known virus previously identified on a wasp prey which suggests viral transmission between the insects. Altogether, our results highlight the importance of virus surveillance in wasps as its service disruption can affect ecology, agriculture and pest management, impacting the economy and threatening human food security.

Abstract Objective: To demonstrate that positive predictive values (PPVs) for suspicious (category 4) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings that have been stratified are equivalent to those stipulated in the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) for mammography and ultrasound. Materials and Methods: This retrospective analysis of electronic medical records generated between January 4, 2016 and December 29, 2021 provided 365 patients in which 419 suspicious (BI-RADS category 4) findings were subcategorized as BI-RADS 4A, 4B or 4C. Malignant and nonmalignant outcomes were determined by pathologic analyses, follow-up, or both. For each subcategory, the level 2 PPV (PPV2) was calculated and tested for equivalence/noninferiority against the established benchmarks. Results: Of the 419 findings evaluated, 168 (40.1%) were categorized as malignant and 251 (59.9%) were categorized as nonmalignant. The PPV2 for subcategory 4A was 14.2% (95% CI: 9.3-20.4%), whereas it was 41.2% (95% CI: 32.8-49.9%) for subcategory 4B and 77.2% (95% CI: 68.4-84.5%) for subcategory 4C. Multivariate analysis showed a significantly different cancer yield for each subcategory (p < 0.001). Conclusion: We found that stratification of suspicious findings by MRI criteria is feasible, and malignancy probabilities for sub-categories 4B and 4C are equivalent to the values established for the other imaging methods in the BI-RADS. Nevertheless, low suspicion (4A) findings might show slightly higher malignancy rates.


Resumo Objetivo: Demonstrar que os valores preditivos positivos (VPPs) para lesões suspeitas (categoria 4) identificadas por ressonância magnética (RM) são equivalentes aos estipulados no ACR BI-RADS para mamografia e ultrassonografia. Materiais e Métodos: Análise retrospectiva de dados em prontuário eletrônico, entre 4 de janeiro de 2016 e 29 de dezembro de 2021, resultou em 365 pacientes elegíveis, com 419 lesões classificadas como BI-RADS 4A, 4B ou 4C. Desfechos malignos e não malignos foram determinados por estudo patológico e/ou acompanhamento. Realizamos o cálculo do VPP nível 2 (VPP2) para cada subcategoria e testamos para não inferioridade/equivalência em relação aos valores de referência. Resultados: Dos 419 achados, 168 (40,1%) foram malignos e 251 (59,9%), não malignos. O VPP2 para subcategoria 4A foi 14,2% (IC 95%: 9,3-20,4%), para 4B foi 41,2% (IC 95%:, 32,8-49,9%) e para 4C foi 77,2% (IC 95%: 68,4-84,5%). Análise multivariada demonstrou diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre as subcategorias (p < 0,001). Conclusão: A estratificação de achados suspeitos por RM é factível, sendo que a probabilidade de malignidade das subcategorias 4B e 4C é equivalente à estabelecida para outros métodos de imagem pelo BI-RADS. Contudo, lesões de baixa suspeição (4A) podem apresentar taxas mais altas de malignidade.

The global incidence of chikungunya has surged in recent decades, with South America, particularly Brazil, experiencing devastating outbreaks. The primary vector for transmitting CHIKV in urban areas is the mosquito species Aedes aegypti, which is very abundant in Brazil. However, little is known about the impact of locally circulating CHIKV genotypes and specific combinations of mosquito populations on vector competence. In this study, we analyzed and compared the infectivity and transmissibility of a recently isolated CHIKV-ECSA lineage from Brazil among four Ae. aegypti populations collected from different regions of the country. When exposed to CHIKV-infected mice for blood feeding, all mosquito populations showed high infection rates and dissemination efficiency. Moreover, using a mouse model to assess transmission rates in a manner that better mirrors natural cycles, we observed that these populations exhibit highly efficient transmission rates of CHIKV-ECSA. Our findings underscore the robust capability of Brazilian Ae. aegypti populations to transmit the locally circulating CHIKV-ECSA lineage, potentially explaining its higher prevalence compared to the Asian lineage also introduced in Brazil.

Social media platforms are a valuable source of data for investigating cultural and political trends related to public interest in nature and conservation. Here, we use the micro-blogging social network Twitter to explore trends in public interest in Brazilian protected areas (PAs). We identified ~400,000 Portuguese language tweets pertaining to all categories of Brazilian PAs over a ten-year period (1 January 2011-31 December 2020). We analysed the content of these tweets and calculated metrics of user engagement (likes and retweets) to uncover patterns and drivers of public interest in Brazilian PAs. Our results indicate that users / tweets mentioning PAs remained stable throughout the sample period. However, engagement with tweets grew steeply, particularly from 2018 onward and coinciding with a change in the Brazilian federal government. Furthermore, public interest was not evenly distributed across PAs; while national parks were the subject of the most tweets, mainly related to tourism activities, tweets related to conflicts among park users and managers were more likely to engage Twitter users. Our study highlights that automatic or semi-automatic monitoring of social media content and engagement has great potential as an early warning system to identify emerging conflicts and to generate data and metrics to support PA policy, governance and management.

Background and Objectives: Robotic surgical systems have rapidly become integrated into colorectal surgery practice in recent years, particularly for rectal resections, where the advantages of robotic platforms over conventional laparoscopy are more pronounced. However, as with any technological advancement, the initial high costs can be a limiting factor, leading to unequal health service access, especially in middle- and lower-income countries. Materials and Method: A narrative review was conducted with the objective of providing an overview of the escalating adoption, current training programmes, and certification process of robotic colorectal surgery in Brazil. Results: Brazil has witnessed a rapid increase in robotic platforms in recent years. Currently, there are 106 robotic systems installed nationwide. However, approximately 60% of the medical facilities which adopted robotic platforms are in the Southeast region, which is both the most populous and economically prosperous in the country. The Brazilian Society of Coloproctology recently established clear rules for the training programme and certification of colorectal surgeons in robotic surgery. The key components of the training encompass theoretical content, virtual robotic simulation, observation, assistance, and supervised procedures in colorectal surgery. Although the training parameters are well established, no colorectal surgery residency programme in Brazil has yet integrated the teaching and training of robotic surgery into its curriculum. Thus far, the training process has been led by private institutions and the industry. Conclusion: Despite the fast spread of robotic platforms across Brazil, several challenges still need to be addressed to democratise training and promote the widespread use of these platforms. It is crucial to tackle these obstacles to achieve greater integration of robotic technology in colorectal surgery throughout the country.

Water deficit is one of the factors that most influence plant growth and yield. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of silicon and salicylic acid application and water deficit on the growth and photosynthetic and osmoregulatory metabolism of Talisia esculenta Radlk. seedlings and their recovery potential after the resumption of irrigation. Six treatments were performed: irrigation, irrigation suspension, irrigation suspension + silicon at 0.5 g L-1, irrigation suspension + silicon at 1.0 g L-1, irrigation suspension + salicylic acid at 50 mg L-1, and irrigation suspension + salicylic acid at 100 mg L-1. The evaluations were carried out at the beginning of the experiment, at 10 and 15 days after irrigation suspension, when the seedlings showed a photosynthetic rate close to zero, and at recovery. The plants were subjected to water restriction for up to 15 days, then re-irrigated until the recovery point, which was monitored based on the photosynthetic rate. Silicon application attenuated the harmful effects of water deficit on gas exchange and initial fluorescence, promoted proline accumulation in the leaf and root, and provided higher seedling quality. Salicylic acid application contributed to the maintenance of the relative water content of leaves during the water deficit period. Silicon and salicylic acid applications can attenuate the harmful effects of water stress, with silicon being the most effective agent in maintaining its growth and metabolism.
