In West Africa Simuliumdamnosum complex members are the main vectors of onchocerciasis. The objective of this paper was to collect data on the presence and spatial distribution of black flies in two provinces of Angola. The research work was conducted in Huambo and Bié provinces where 24 water bodies were sampled between July and August 2015. All the studied sites were located above 1 000 m of altitude and only three of them were found to be negative for the presence of black flies. These were the first results obtained on the presence and spatial distribution of Simulium sp. in Angola and are of great importance because overlapping the distribution maps of human infection and of vectors allows finding the areas at risk of transmission(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Surveys of cardiac pacing and implantable cardiovertor defibrillators (ICD) have been reported since 1969 and 1993 respectively. Increasing costs of medical technology, budget constraints and emergent new clinical indications prompted our committee to conduct the first survey of cardiac rhythm management and device implant patterns in Puerto Rico. METHOD: Clinical and demographic data were obtained for all cardiac devices sold and implanted from 2000 to 2006, through a joint agreement with official representatives of the 2 largest manufacturers and distributors of cardiac pacemakers and ICD in Puerto Rico. RESULTS: 13,854 cardiac devices were implanted from 2000 to 2006. The number of permanent pacemakers (PP) implanted per million population has varied from 430 in the year 2000 to 482 in the year 2006. A significant greater number of males received PP than females (P < .05). Yearly increases in implant rates for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and ICD were observed, mainly due to new emergent clinical indications, appropriate insurance coverage and availability of implanting electrophysiologists. CONCLUSIONS: Sales figures from PP and ICD manufacturers are a reliable system to calculate and analyze changes in cardiac device implant patterns. The rate of 482 PP per million population positions Puerto Rico as the third largest implant market in North and South America. This finding should be useful to insurance health providers since 76% of the implants are performed in patients over 65 years old. In the year 2006, Puerto Rico was the 10th largest implant market in the world with 67 CRT implanted per million population. A significant greater number of CRT and ICD were implanted in males than females. This gender difference has increased in spite of strict requirements to include more females in clinical trials and intensive, educational and awareness efforts conducted among physicians and patients. A summary of the current guidelines and clinical indications is provided to assist the physician in the selection of patients referred for cardiac rhythm management and implant procedures.

RESUMO

Data of the transcatheter radio frequency ablations for patients with supraventricular tachycardia conducted in Puerto Rico is presented. One group includes the first 100 patients performed from September 1994 to March 1997 at the Cardiovascular Center of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean and the Second group includes 157 ablations done in the year 2003. Ablations performed in the different types of supraventricular tachycardias is analyzed including success rates and complications. Results are compared to those reported in the 1998 NASPE registry. The results obtained demonstrated a high successful rate of procedures with minimal complications in both series of patients. One procedure related death occurred in the 2003 year group and none in the earlier group.

RESUMO

In some mammals a large portion of the retinal neurons of the ganglion cell layer are not ganglion cells. These neurons, lacking axons which pass to the brain via the optic nerve, are termed displaced amacrine cells. The present study assessed the number of displaced amacrine cells in the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus). We compared the number of labeled cells in the ganglion cell layer after HRP injection of optic tracts and target nuclei with the total number of neurons in the ganglion cell layer. We conclude that approximately one half of the neurons in the ganglion cell layer are displaced amacrine cells, the other one half are ganglion cells. The displaced amacrine cells are on the average smaller than the ganglion cells. Our results provide a rationale for renewed study of relation of ganglion cell morphology and physiological functional type in this species
