Integrative and Complementary Practices (PICs) are presented as supporting methods, helping to achieve success in certain clinical and/or surgical treatments, acting in prevention, assisting in healing and psychosomatic balance in order to reestablish agreement between mind and body. . The Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO) has regulated practices such as acupuncture, hypnosis, floral therapy and herbal medicine, however, their applicability depends on the issuance of a license and its proper registration with the Council (Resolution CFO 82/2008). For Dentistry, PICs provide new tools to provide comprehensive care to human beings. In this work, we propose to review the literature on PICs and Dentistry. This literature review was carried out by searching articles in the Scielo, PubMed and Scholar Google databases from 2000 to 2021. Articles were found on the following PICs working together with Dentistry: floral therapies, acupuncture, hypnodontics, ozone therapy , laser therapy, phytotherapy, homeopathy and anthroposophic dentistry. These practices are of great value, as they promote well-being without causing harm to the individual, presenting few or no side effects, allowing greater safety for patients, in addition to favoring the relationship between patient and dentist, optimizing working time in the dental office and reducing costs.

Objective: To evaluate the short-term effect of laser acupuncture compared with counseling, occlusal plaque, and physiotherapy treatments on pain, anxiety, and depression in TMD patients. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was performed with patients with TMD, diagnosed by the TMD (RDC / TMD). 60 patients were randomly allocated to four distinct groups: counseling (AC), Occlusal Plaque (PO), physical therapy (PF) and laser acupuncture (LA) and were evaluated at baseline, and at 1 month after therapy. To evaluate anxiety, HADS, BAI, and STAI were used. For depression was BDI and HADS. For pain, VAS was used. The Kruskal-Wallis test with a 95% confidence level was used for intergroup analysis. The Mann-Whitney post-test, to verify where was the difference found between the groups. And the Wilcoxon signed rank test for analysis between the times analyzed. Results: Over time there was a reduction in pain symptoms in the PL (p = 0.001), PF (p = 0.014) and LA groups were at the significance threshold (p = 0.08). After 30 days of therapy there was a significant reduction between the PF versus AC (p = 0.004) and FP versus LA (p = 0.006) groups. The FP group was the only group that reduced anxiety symptoms by BAI (p = 0.09) and by STAI-E (p = 0.042). In depressive parameters there was a statistically significant difference over time by BDI in the PO (p = 0.044) and LA (p = 0.009) groups. Between groups there was a statistically significant difference by BDI, between PO versus LA (p = 0.004), and PF versus LA (p = 0.005). And by HADS, between FP versus LA (p = 0.012). Conclusion: For patients with anxiety and depression, laser acupuncture is not the most appropriate therapy to reduce pain symptoms in the short term (AU).

Introduction: Scalp acupuncture, a form of acupuncture, has been incorporated in the treatment of various pathologies, mainly for the relief of chronic pain. However, there are currently no studies on its use in TMD, the main condition of chronic orofacial pain. Objective: To evaluate the effects of Chinese scalp acupuncture in patients diagnosed with TMD regarding sleep, quality of life and pain. As well, as compare their results to traditional therapies. Methods: Sixty patients diagnosed with TMD by Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC / TMD) Diagnostic Research Criteria were allocated into four treatment groups: Counseling (CO = 15), Occlusal Splint (OS = 15), Craniopuncture (CP = 15) and Manual Physiotherapy (MP = 15). The CP group was conducted in eight sessions, two a week, for four weeks. After one month of treatment the participants were reevaluated. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was applied regarding sleep disorders, World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-bref), quality of life, and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain. . The analyzed data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science program (SPSS 22.0), using the Kruskal-Wallis test for nonparametric data (p <0.05) for intergroup analysis, or postoperatively. Mann Whitney test, and the Wilcoxon Signed Classification Test for intragroup analysis (p <0.05). Results: The CP group improved pain parameters (p = 0.015), as did the OS (p = 0.01) and MP (p = 0.014) groups after 30 days of treatment. However, only the OS (p = 0.002) and MP (p = 0.029) groups improved sleep quality, whereas with quality of life only the MP group improved the significant form of the WHOQOL physical domain (p = 0.011) and the group OS the psychological domain (p = 0.012). Conclusion: Scalp acupuncture demonstrated positive short-term results in TMD patients, significantly reducing pain, as well as occlusal splint and manual physiotherapy, being superior to counseling. Therefore, being another alternative to conventional therapies (AU).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Several studies have used placebo acupuncture methods in recent years as a way for blinding therapeutic effect of acupuncture, however placebo method selection has not followed enough methodological criteria to the point of stabilishing a consensus of what should be the best method to be used. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three different placebo acupuncture methods for blinding applied in healthy subjects. METHODS: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Sergipe with the number 47193015.5.0000.5546 and all individuals participating in the study signed a free and informed consent. For this study, 321 healthy volunteers were randomly divided into seven groups using the abdominal point stomach (ST) 25 and seven groups using the lumbar point bladder (Bl) 52 for stimulation. For real acupuncture procedure, three different methods of placebo acupuncture plus a mix between real acupuncture and placebo applied in the same individual, totaling fourteen groups in this study. Outcome assessments were performed before and immediately after applying the technique. Investigator who assessed variables had no knowledgement about the method was applied. Identification, weight and height were measured before puncture by using. At the end, subjects were asked if they believed they were receiving real or placebo acupuncture. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between groups for the perception about the type o stimulation (wheter real or placebo puncture). Percentage of subjects who reported to have received real acupuncture in the abdominal point was 69.56% in real group, 86.95% in group Park Sham, 82.60% in needle + foam, 91.30% in insertion and removal, 78.26% in real + Park Sham, 86.36% in real + needle and foam, 86.95% in real + insertion and removal, and for the lumbar point was 86.36% in real group, 86.95% in group Park Sham, 69.56% in needle + foam, 72% in insertion and removal, 86.95% in real + Park Sham, 81.81% in real + needle and foam and 78.26% in real + insertion and removal. CONCLUSION: All placebo acupuncture methods proposed in this study were equally effective for bliding the study participants using either abdominal or lumbar acupoints, and none of the placebo methods presented benefit compared to the other to be used in future clinical trials. RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disease that causes widespread pain and increased sensitivity to pain because of a dysfunction in the central nervous system. This study investigated the effect of music combined with vibration on acupuncture points for the treatment of FM. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with FM were allocated randomly to four groups (30 patients each). One group listened to a sequence of Bach's compositions. The second group was subjected to vibratory stimuli on a combination of acupuncture points on the skin. The third group (complete) underwent both procedures in a simultaneous and synchronized manner, with inclusion of binaural beats. The fourth group (control) received no stimulation. The participants underwent the experimental procedure during five sessions performed on alternate days. They were assessed by the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) before the first session and after the last session (20 days). RESULTS: All groups showed a significant improvement in FIQ and HAQ scores at the evaluation after the intervention. The complete group exhibited the best result on both the FIQ and HAQ (p<0.001), and the improvement in HAQ score was significant (p<0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the placebo effect in FM may be substantial. However, comparison between groups revealed that the complete group had the greatest reduction in both FIQ and HAQ, with a significant improvement in HAQ, suggesting that the combined use of music and vibration exerts a greater effect on FM symptoms.

RESUMEN

In several countries the most common cause of death in young people is cancer. Patients with head and neck cancer often have complications after cancer treatment. Radiation therapy can cause oral trismus, which is related to high doses of radiation. Although acupuncture is reported to be effective and is widely used for the treatment of peripheral facial paralysis by promoting an improvement of motor functions, few reports in the literature demonstrate its effectiveness. We report a case in which the symptoms of a patient with facial paralysis after surgical cancer treatment associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy improved after laser treatment at acupuncture points. Ten weekly sessions of laser therapy were conducted, using the Twin laser device, applied to systemic acupuncture points (LR3, LI4, LI18, LI19, LI20, SI17, SI19, ST4, ST6, ST7, GV20), together with 10 weekly sessions of auricular acupressure. Significant improvement of the trismus was seen, confirmed by the increase in mouth opening from 33.26 to 53.3 mm. The patient's family also noted reduced anxiety and hyperactivity. These results suggest that laser acupuncture and auricular acupressure for trismus and facial paralysis following cancer treatment is worth further investigation.

RESUMEN

Cardiovascular diseases are the main causes of mortality, not only in Brazil, but around the world. The use of acupuncture as a complementary and alternative treatment for cardiovascular diseases has been suggested for animals as well as human beings. Possible advantages in using acupuncture are the low cost of treatment and low risks of collateral damage from a combination of acupuncture with other medical treatments. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of traditional acupuncture with needles and laser acupuncture on arterial pressure and peripheral circulation of inferior limbs in patients with circulatory deficiency. Ten acupuncture points were stimulated in 40 individuals, being that 20 were stimulated by Aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) laser with emission in the red spectral region (650 nm) using an energy density of 2,4 J/cm2, and 20 were stimulated by systemic acupuncture needles. The analysis of peripheral circulation was performed based on the measurement of arterial pressure of the ankle and arms, using sphygmomanometer and Doppler equipment. The variance of the revascularization index of the laser acupuncture group was 0,057, and 0.030 for the needles group with p= 0,006. These results show that only those treated with laser acupuncture exhibit a significant increase in systolic pressure of their lower limbs, with a consequent improvement of the Revascularization Index, suggesting that different stimuli on acupuncture points generate different variations of peripheral resistance of lower limbs. is column.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The validity of a new sham acupuncture technique was tested on acupuncture naïve healthy subjects. METHODS: The procedure was tested in accupoints LI4 and ST6 in a randomised, single blind and crossover study. The participants were blind to which technique they received. 32 healthy volunteers (15 men, 17 women, aged between 20 and 62 years, mean age 34 years) were recruited at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Interventions Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: (1) real acupuncture or (2) sham acupuncture. After 30 min, the patients were 'needled' again in a crossover design. Main outcome measures A yes/no questionnaire was used to assess the credibility and characteristics of the procedure. RESULTS: For the credibility question (do you think you received real acupuncture?) no statistically significant group differences were evident before or after the crossover. Subjects who answered yes to this question ranged from 14/16 (87.5%) before crossover to 10/16 (62.5%) after crossover for the sham and 12/16 (75%) before crossover to 15/16 (93.8%) after crossover for the real acupuncture. The question that showed a significant difference (only after crossover) was the question, "did you feel the needle penetrating the skin?"; after crossover 12/16 (75%) subjects in the real acupuncture group said yes and 2/16 (12%) subjects in the sham group said yes to this question (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: These data suggests that this method is credible and constitutes a simple and inexpensive technique for use as a control in clinical research in acupuncture naïve subjects.
