RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical forces applied to the teeth constitute a not-insignificant feature of orthodontic treatment. Edgewise, the most commonly used type of mechanics, was introduced 88 years ago and has become a standard worldwide. The invention of Edgewise by E.H. Angle in 1928 is an event in the history of orthodontics which deserves to be recalled. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Starting with the initial search for this method and leading up to a presentation of the technique itself, this paper provides an overview of the history of Angle mechanics. RESULTS: In order to demonstrate the first mechanical system to function in the three planes of space, Angle provided precise diagrams and instructions for use while insisting, on several occasions, that his mechanics was not complicated and that careful study should allow users to overcome any potential difficulties. DISCUSSION: The mechanism as devised by Angle, who died shortly after launching his invention, was only used for a short length of time. However, all subsequently invented therapeutic techniques incorporated the mechanical principles underpinning Edgewise, paying tribute in this way to a great invention.

RESUMEN

In the early days of fixed-appliance orthodontic treatment, brackets were welded to gold or stainless steel bands. Before treatment, the orthodontist had to create enough space around each tooth to accommodate the bands, and then those spaces had to be closed at the end of treatment, when the bands were removed. This was time-consuming for the orthodontist and uncomfortable for the patient. Banded appliances frequently caused gingival trauma when fitted, and decalcification could occur under the band. In the mid-1960s, Dr George Newman, an orthodontist in Orange, New Jersey, and Professor Fujio Miura, chair of the Department of Orthodontics at Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan, pioneered the bonding of orthodontic brackets to enamel. Many developments have occurred in the decades that followed, including many new adhesives, sophisticated base designs, new bracket materials, faster or more efficient curing methods, self-etching primers, fluoride-releasing agents, and sealants. The purpose of this article is to review the history of orthodontic bonding, especially the materials used in the bonding process.

RESUMEN

Lingual orthodontic appliances have experienced a renaissance in the UK over the past 5 years, becoming more widely accepted as a suitable alternative to conventional labial appliances when treating most malocclusions. Clinically improved laboratory techniques have overcome many of the difficulties that a previous generation of orthodontists encountered when first trying to embrace this innovative technique to correct malocclusions. This article provides a brief history of lingual orthodontics. It will discuss the development of the technique, the reasons for its initial rise and fall in popularity, and more recent developments that have re-established its popularity among orthodontists in the UK.

When lingual orthodontics was first introduced about twenty years ago some called it the 'ultimate aesthetic appliance'. Patients and practitioners embraced this new treatment alternative with high expectations. Reports of disappointing results and high costs dampened much of the initial excitement and enthusiasm gradually waned. By the late 1980s, the number of practitioners using the technique had fallen sharply, leaving only a handful who still believed in its potential. Relatively little has been written on lingual orthodontics, almost nothing in recent years. This article takes an objective view of its present status.
