RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to develop a mixture of dimethacrylate isomers (PG6EMA) as a potential monomer for dental adhesives and composites. PG6EMA was synthesized de novo and characterized in the presence of ethanol (3%, 6% or 9%). BisGMA/TEGDMA (BTEG, 50/50 wt.%) was used as the resin control. Composites were formulated with 60 wt.% of either PG6EMA or BisGMA (40 wt.% TEGDMA and 70 wt.% filler). DMPA (0.2 wt.%) and DPI-PF6 (0.4 wt.%) were added as photoinitiators, irradiated with a mercury arc lamp (320-500 nm, 500 mW/cm2; Acticure). All materials were tested for polymerization kinetics (near-infrared), viscosity (η) and storage modulus (G', oscillatory rheometry). The composites were further characterized for water sorption/solubility, wet/dry flexural strength/modulus and polymerization stress. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (α = 0.05). The PG6EMA resins showed lower rates of polymerization compared with BTEG (p = 0.001) but high degrees of conversion (p = 0.002). Solvent concentration did not affect RPMAX but the 6% and 9% mixtures showed higher final DC, likely due to reduced viscosity. PG6EMA had much higher viscosity than BTEG (p <0.001) and lower G' (p = 0.003). Composites modified with PG6EMA have slower polymerization rates (p = 0.001) but higher final DC (p = 0.04) than the control. PG6EMA/TEGDMA showed lower dry/wet flexural strength and comparable dry modulus. The PG6EMA/TEGDMA composite showed a 18.4% polymerization stress reduction compared to the BTEG composite. Both base monomers had similar WS/SL and G'. Within its limitations, this study demonstrated that the newly synthesized PG6EMA was a viable alternative to BisGMA in dental composites.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the incorporation of cardanol trimethacrylate monomer (CTMA), derived from the cashew nut shell liquid, as a substitute for Bis-GMA in acrylic resins formulations and its effect on experimental resin composites' physicochemical and mechanical properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The intermediary cardanol epoxy was synthesized via cardanol epoxidation, followed by the synthesis of CTMA through methacrylic anhydride solvent-free esterification. Experimental resin composites were formulated with an organic matrix composed of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (50/50 wt %) (control). CTMA was gradually added to replace different proportions of Bis-GMA: 10 wt % (CTMA-10), 20 wt % (CTMA-20), 40 wt % (CTMA-40), and 50 wt % (CTMA-50). The composites were characterized by degree of conversion, water sorption and solubility, viscosity, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, flexural strength and elastic modulus. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05), except for water sorption data, which were analyzed by Kruskall-Wallis and Dunn's method. RESULTS: CTMA-based and control composites did not show statistically significant differences regarding degree of conversion, flexural strength and elastic modulus. CTMA reduced the viscosity and solubility compared to the Bis-GMA-based composite. The CTMA-40 and CTMA-50 exhibited significantly lower water sorption compared to the control. Also, acceptable thermal stability and viscoelastic properties were obtained for safe use in the oral cavity. CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating CTMA into composites resulted in similar chemical and mechanical properties compared to Bis-GMA-based material while reducing viscosity, water sorption and solubility. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: CTMA could be used as a trimethacrylate monomer replacing Bis-GMA in resin composites, thereby minimizing BPA exposure.

RESUMEN

Borosilicate glass was developed to enhance the mechanical behavior and smoothness of dental zirconia as an alternative to conventional glaze. This study assessed the mechanical and optical properties of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) coated with borosilicate glass or a commercial glaze fired for an extended period of time. Disc-shaped 3Y-TZP zirconia specimens (Zpex, Tosoh) were sintered at 1550°C for 2 hours. The specimens were divided into three groups: as-sintered (control, C); commercial glaze (G); and borosilicate glass (SL). The glaze and borosilicate glass were applied over the zirconia and fired for 20 minutes at 950°C and 1200°C, respectively. Biaxial flexural strength, fractography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), roughness (Ra and Rz), fracture toughness (Vickers indentation method), color difference (∆E00), and translucency (TP00) analyses were conducted. The t-test or the one-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests were used to analyze the data (α = 0.05). Flexural strength data were subjected to the Weibull analysis. The SL group exhibited the highest flexural strength (1025.8 MPa), whereas the C (859.41 MPa) and G (816.0 MPa) groups exhibited similar values. The SL group also had the highest characteristic strength. The fracture origin in all groups was on the zirconia surface. XRD analysis revealed that the specimens from the SL group contained tetragonal, cubic, and monoclinic phases. The SL group presented the lowest surface roughness. Fracture toughness in the SL group was lower than in the C group, but similar to that observed in the G group. The translucency and color differences observed in the G and SL groups were similar. Borosilicate glass enhanced the flexural strength of 3Y-TZP, promoted the smoothest surface, and exhibited optical properties similar to those of the glaze.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: this study sought to evaluate the effect of isobornyl methacrylate (IBOMA) as a diluent monomer on the physicochemical properties of experimental flowable resin composites. METHODOLOGY: the organic resin matrix of a modal flowable resin composite was formulated with 50 wt.% of bisphenol-A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) and 50 wt.% of a diluent monomer, in which IBOMA was used as a combining or substituent diluent monomer to triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). The resin matrices were filled with 55 wt.% particles, of which 10 wt.% was 0.05-µm fumed silica, and 45 wt.% was 0.7-µm BaBSiO2 glass. Polymerization shrinkage stress (PSS; n=10), degree of conversion (DC; n=3), maximum rate of polymerization (Rpmax; n=3), film thickness (FT; n=10), sorption (Wsp; n=10), solubility (Wsl; n=10), flexural strength (FS; n=10), flexural modulus (FM; n=10), Knoop microhardness (KH; n=10), and microhardness reduction after chemical softening (HR; n=10) were evaluated. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's test (α=0.05; ß=0.2). RESULTS: the results showed that the substitution or addition of IBOMA reduced FT (p=0.001), PSS (p=0.013), Rpmax (p=0.001), DC (p=0.001), FM (p=0.006) Wsp (p=0.032), and Wsl (p=0.021). However, when used as a complete substituent, IBOMA demonstrated significantly lower FS (p=0.017) and KH (p=0.008), while TEGDMA demonstrated significantly lower HR (p=0.022). CONCLUSION: the flowable composite containing IBOMA combined with TEGDMA showed no effect in KH and FS and effectively reduced the PSS, RP, FT, Wsp, and Wsl. However, it showed a reduction in DC, FS, and an increase in HR.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To formulate an experimental methacrylate-based photo-polymerizable resin for 3D printing with ytterbium trifluoride as filler and to evaluate the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties. METHODS: Resin matrix was formulated with 60 wt% UDMA, 40 wt% TEGDMA, 1 wt% TPO, and 0.01 wt% BHT. Ytterbium Trifluoride was added in concentrations of 1 (G1 %), 2 (G2 %), 3 (G3 %), 4 (G4 %), and 5 (G5 %) wt%. One group remained without filler addition as control (GC). The samples were designed in 3D builder software and printed using a UV-DLP 3D printer. The samples were ultrasonicated with isopropanol and UV cured for 60 min. The resins were tested for degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength, Knoop microhardness, softening in solvent, radiopacity, colorimetric analysis, and cytotoxicity (MTT and SRB). RESULTS: Post-polymerization increased the degree of conversion of all groups (p < 0.05). G2 % showed the highest DC after post-polymerization. G2 % showed no differences in flexural strength from the G1 % and GC (p > 0.05). All groups showed a hardness reduction after solvent immersion. No statistical difference was found in radiopacity, softening in solvent (ΔKHN%), colorimetric spectrophotometry, and cytotoxicity (MTT) (p > 0.05). G1 % showed reduced cell viability for SRB assay (p < 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE: It was possible to produce an experimental photo-polymerizable 3D printable resin with the addition of 2 % ytterbium trifluoride as filler without compromising the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, comparable to the current provisional materials.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the marginal integrity (MI%) and to characterize specific properties of a thermoviscous bulk-fill resin composite, two regular bulk-fill resin composites, and a non-bulk-fill resin composite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: VisCalor bulk (VBF), Filtek One Bulk Fill (OBF), and Aura Bulk Fill (ABF) were evaluated. Filtek Z250 XT (ZXT) was used as non-bulk-fill control. MI% was evaluated in standardized cylindrical cavities restored with the composites by using a 3D laser confocal microscope. The following properties were characterized: volumetric polymerization shrinkage (VS%), polymerization shrinkage stress (Pss), degree of conversion (DC%), microhardness (KHN), flexural strength (FS), and elastic modulus (EM). Data were analyzed by one-way and two-way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD post-hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: VBF presented the highest MI% and the lowest VS% and Pss (p < 0.05). DC% ranged from 59.4% (OBF) to 71.0% (ZXT). ZXT and VBF presented similar and highest KHN than OBF and ABF (p < 0.05). ABF presented the lowest FS (p < 0.05). EM ranged from 5.5 GPa to 7.7 GPa, with the values of ZXT and VBF being similar and statistically higher than those of OBF and ABF (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Thermoviscous technology employed by VisCalor bulk was able to improve its mechanical behavior comparatively to regular bulk-fill resin composites and to contribute to a better marginal integrity in restorations built up in cylindrical cavities with similar geometry to a class I cavity as well. Although presenting overall better physicomechanical properties, Z250 XT presented the worst MI%. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The marginal integrity, which is pivotal for the success of resin composite restorations, could be improved using VisCalor bulk-fill. The worst MI% presented by Z250 XT reinforces that non-bulk-fill resin composites shall not be bulk-inserted in the cavity to be restored.

RESUMEN

Although at-home bleaching can recover the optical properties of stained CAD-CAM monolithic materials, little is known about its impact on their surface and mechanical properties, especially when successive sessions are performed. This study evaluated the effect of successive at-home bleaching sessions on the microhardness, roughness, topography, biaxial flexural strength (BFS), and reliability of CAD-CAM monolithic materials. Disks from Lava Ultimate (LU), Vita Enamic (VE), and IPS Empress CAD (EMP) were fabricated and submitted to up to three bleaching sessions. At-home bleaching was performed with 10% carbamide peroxide, and each session consisted of one application for 10 hours/day for 14 days. The analyses of the aforementioned parameters were assessed before and after the first, second, and third bleaching sessions, except for BFS, which was evaluated at baseline and after the third session. The Weibull modulus was calculated from the BFS data. The microhardness of the three materials as well as the roughness of LU were not affected by the sessions, whereas the roughness of VE and EMP increased from the second session. All materials displayed topographic changes, which became more pronounced with the increase in the number of sessions. Although bleaching decreased the BFS of the materials, it did not adversely affect their reliability. Successive at-home bleaching sessions with the protocol used in the present study cannot be considered a safe procedure for the materials evaluated.

RESUMEN

Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are the common materials employed in pediatric dentistry because of their specific applications in class I restorations and atraumatic restoration treatments (ART) of deciduous teeth in populations at high risk of caries. Studies show a limited clinical durability of these materials. Attempts have thus been made to incorporate nanoparticles (NPs) into the glass ionomer for improving resistance and make it like the tooth structure. An in vitro experimental study was conducted using the required samples dimensions and prepared based on the test being carried out on the three groups with or without the modification of light-cured glass ionomer. Samples were grouped as follows: control group (G1_C), 2% silver phosphate/hydroxyapatite NPs group (G2_SPH), and 2% titanium dioxide NPs group (G3_TiO2). The physical tests regarding flexural strength (n = 10 per group), solubility (n = 10 per group), and radiopacity (n = 3 per group) were performed. The data were analyzed by Shapiro Wilks test, and one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA), and multiple comparisons by post hoc Tukey's test. The p-value of < 0.05 was considered significant. No statistically significant difference was observed between the control group (G1_C) and (G2_SPH) (p = 0.704) in the flexural strength test, however differences were found between G2_SPH and G3_TiO2 groups, ANOVA (p = 0.006); post hoc Tukey's test (p = 0.014). Pertaining to the solubility, G2_SPH obtained the lowest among the three groups, ANOVA (p = 0.010); post hoc Tukey's test (p = 0.009). The three study groups obtained an adequate radiopacity of >1 mm Al, respectively. The resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) was further modified with 2% silver phosphate/hydroxyapatite NPs to improve the physical properties such as enhancing the solubility and sorption without compromising the flexural strength and radiopacity behavior of modified RMGIC. The incorporation of 2% titanium dioxide NPs did not improve the properties studied.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate experimental dimethacrylate-based materials containing calcium orthophosphates or calcium silicate particles in terms of their optical, mechanical and Ca2+ release behaviour. METHODS: Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD), hydroxyapatite (HAp), beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) or calcium silicate (CaSi) particles were added to a photocurable BisGMA/TEGDMA resin (1:1 in mols) at a 30 vol% fraction. Materials containing silanized or non-silanized barium glass particles were used as controls. Degree of conversion (DC) at the top and base of 2-mm thick specimens was determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy (n = 5). Translucency parameter (TP) and transmittance (%T) were determined using a spectrophotometer (n = 3). Biaxial flexural strength (BFS) and flexural modulus (FM) were determined by biaxial flexural testing after 24 h storage in water (n = 10). Ca2+ release in water was determined during 28 days by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (n = 3). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA/Tukey test (DC: two-way; TP, %T; BFS and FM: one-way; Ca2+ release: repeated measures two-way, α = 5 %). RESULTS: CaSi and ß-TCP particles drastically reduced DC at 2 mm, TP and %T (p < 0.001). Compared to both controls, all Ca2+-releasing materials presented lower BFS (p < 0.001) and only the material with DCPD showed significantly lower FM (p < 0.05). The material containing CaSi presented the highest Ca2+ release, while among materials formulated with calcium orthophosphates the use of DCPD resulted in the highest release (p < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE: CaSi particles allowed the highest Ca2+ release. Notwithstanding, the use of DCPD resulted in a material with the best compromise between optical behaviour, DC, strength and Ca2+ release.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the impact of 'storage condition' and 'period of storage' on selected physico-mechanical properties and fracture reliability of a resin-based composite (RBC). Specimens, prepared from a nanofilled RBC (Filtek Z350 XT; 3M ESPE), underwent tests for degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (σ), flexural modulus (E), and hardness. The specimens were initially grouped into dry storage at 37°C or wet storage in distilled water at 37°C. Subsequently, they were further divided into four subgroups based on the period of storage: 6, 24, 72, or 168 hours. Specimens tested immediately after preparation served as control. Data analysis employed two-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis (α = 5%). Compared to the control, an increase in DC was observed only after 72 hours of dry storage; σ showed higher values after both dry and wet storage, regardless of the storage period (except for the group wet-stored for 168 hours); E increased with dry storage for at least 24 hours or wet storage for 72 hours; and hardness increased after dry storage for at least 24 hours or wet storage for up to 72 hours. The Weibull modulus remained unchanged under any of the distinct storage conditions. Dry storage resulted in greater characteristic strength than the control, whereas wet storage contributed to higher strength values only at shorter periods (up to 24 hours). Overall, the inherent properties of RBCs with a similar composition to that tested in this study may change with varying storage conditions and periods.

RESUMEN

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The optimal disinfection protocol that controls adverse effects and promotes effective antimicrobial action on removable prostheses is unclear. PURPOSE: This in vitro study investigated the effect of disinfectant solutions on the biological, physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of removable prosthesis materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Specimens of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) alloy were immersed in distilled water (PMMA) or artificial saliva (Co-Cr) as the control and in 0.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl0.25%), 0.5% chloramine T (CT0.5%), and 0.15% Triclosan (TR0.15%). The antibiofilm activity was evaluated by microbial load and cell metabolisms of the mixed biofilm. Physical (color change, sorption, solubility, and surface roughness), mechanical (hardness, flexural, and impact strength), and chemical (corrosion) properties were analyzed before and after simulating a 5-year immersion. Laser confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dispersive energy spectroscopy (EDS) complemented the analyses. The data were analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis with Dunn posttests, 1-way ANOVA, and repeated measures ANOVA (α=.05). RESULTS: All solutions were effective against bacteria, but only NaOCl0.25% eliminated Candida spp. TR0.15%, and CT0.5% increased cell metabolisms. For interaction (time and solution), there was a reduction in PMMA hardness in the control and TR0.15%. Color, sorption, solubility, and flexural strength did not change. CT0.5% and TR0.15% were similar for impact resistance. CT0.5% caused the lowest roughness. NaOCl0.25% showed the greatest corrosive potential. Dark spots were seen under SEM in Co-Cr stored with NaOCl0.25% and TR0.15%. EDS indicated different proportions of oxygen, cobalt, chromium, and molybdenum. CONCLUSIONS: NaOCl0.25% had the best antimicrobial action. CT0.5% and TR0.15% have potential. Hardness and roughness changes were clinically acceptable, and the other properties remained unchanged. All the solutions caused color changes. NaOCl0.25% was unsatisfactory for use with Co-Cr, CT0.5% was intermediate, and TR0.15% was suitable.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the efficacy of denture cleaners on the adhesion of Candida albicans and their effects on the surface, optical, and mechanical properties of resins for conventional, milled, and 3D-printed denture bases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 240 resin samples were made, 120 for testing Candida albicans adhesion, optical stabilities (ΔE00), roughness (Ra), hydrophilicity (°), surface free energy (Owens-Wendt) and 120 samples for testing Candida albicans adhesion, surface microhardness (Knoop), flexural strength and modulus of elasticity in a three-point test, in which they were divided into 3 groups of denture resin (n = 40) and subdivided into 5 cleaners of dentures (n = 8). Data were evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Denture cleaners with an alkaline solution and dilute acid composition were those that showed the greatest effectiveness in reducing Candida albicans (P < 0.001), however 1% NaOCl significantly affected the properties of the resins (P < 0.05). Denture 3D-printed showed that the surface microhardness was significantly lower for all cleansers (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Listerine demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing Candida albicans with minimal effect on denture properties, whereas 1% NaOCl had a significant negative impact on the properties. The mechanical properties were significantly lower in 3D-printed resin than in other resins for all denture cleansers. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Denture base materials are being sold to adapt to the CAD/CAM system, increasing the number of users of dentures manufactured with this system. Despite this, there is little investigation into denture cleaners regarding the adhesion capacity of microorganisms and the optical, surface and mechanical properties of dentures, thus requiring further investigation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To compare the performance of Cention-N® with direct restorative materials used at the daily practice (e.g., resin-based composites/RBC, glass ionomer cements/GIC, bioactive resins, silver amalgam) via a systematic review study. METHODS: The review followed the PRISMA-NMA recommendations, and the protocol of the review was published at osf.io/ybde8. The search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Lilacs, and SciELO databases, as well as in the grey literature (Open Grey, Proquest, and Periódicos CAPES). Studies with an in vitro experimental design evaluating the characteristics and properties of Cention-N in comparison to other restorative materials were included. The risk of bias of included studies was assessed using the RoBDEMAT tool, and meta-analyses were conducted using Review Manager 5.4 and MetaInsight V3 tools. RESULTS: A total of 85 studies were included in the review, from which 79 were meta-analyzed. Several characteristics of direct restorative materials were analyzed, including physical (color change, degree of conversion, hardness, microleakage, polymerization rate, roughness, water solubility, water sorption), mechanical (bond strength to dentin, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, flexural modulus, flexural strength, load-to-fracture, wear), and biological (alkalinizing effect, antibacterial activity, calcium and fluoride release) properties. SIGNIFICANCE: Cention-N presented similar physico-mechanical properties compared to RBCs, but a stronger behavior than GICs. Despite the Alkasite nature of Cention-N, GICs may still demonstrate the greatest fluoride releasing ability from all direct restorative materials. This review confirmed the adequate behavior of Cention-N when compared to several other more traditionally used materials, confirming its applicability for the permanent restoration of decayed or fractured teeth.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the barium glass (BG) filler in 3D printing resin-based composites for restorative structures. METHODS: Experimental 3D printing resin-based composites were formulated with UDMA 70%wt, Bis-EMA 20%wt, and TEGDMA 10%wt. Photoinitiators TPO and DFI (2%wt) were used. BG was incorporated at 40%wt and 50%wt. 0%wt BG was used as negative control and the VarseoSmile Crownplus (Bego) was used as a commercial control. Specimens were printed using a 3D printer. Subsequently, specimens were washed and submitted to post-curing with 405 nm at 60ºC for 2 × 20 min at FormCure (FormLabs). 3D printing resin-based composites were evaluated by flexural strength, degree of conversion, softening in solvent, radiopacity, and cytotoxicity against gingival fibroblasts. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). RESULTS: No significant differences in flexural strength were showed between BG40% (90.5 ± 5,4 MPa), BG50% (102.0 ± 11.7 MPa) and VA (105.2 ± 11.7 MPa). Addition of 40% and 50% of BG showed no influence in the degree of conversion compared to VA (p > 0.05). All groups showed softening in solvent after immersion in ethanol (p < 0.05). All groups showed more than 1mmAl of radiopacity. BG50% showed significantly higher radiopacity (2.8 ± 0.3 mmAl) than other groups (p < 0,05). Cytotoxicity evaluation showed gingival cell viability higher than 80% for all groups. SIGNIFICANCE: Addition of up to 50%wt of barium glass in experimental 3D printing resin-based composites showed promising results for long-term restorative structures.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of hydrophilic/permeable polymer matrices on water sorption/solubility (WS/SL), Ca2+ release, mechanical properties and hydrolytic degradation of composites containing dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) particles. METHODS: Six composites were tested, all with 10 vol% of glass particles and either 30 vol% or 40 vol% DCPD. Composites containing 1BisGMA:1TEGDMA in mols (at both inorganic levels) were considered controls. Four materials were formulated where 0.25 or 0.5 of the BisGMA/TEGDMA was replaced by pyromellitic dianhydride glycerol dimethacrylate (PMGDM)/ polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA). Composites were tested for degree of conversion (FTIR spectroscopy), WS/SL (ISO 4049) and Ca2+ release (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy). Fracture toughness (FT) and biaxial flexural strength/modulus (BFS/FM) were determined after 24 h and 60 days in water. The contributions of diffusional and relaxational mechanisms to Ca2+ release kinetics were analyzed using the semi-empirical Salim-Peppas model. Data were analysed by ANOVA/Tukey test (alpha: 0.05). RESULTS: WS/SL was higher for composites containing PMGDM/PEGDMA compared to the controls (p < 0.001). Only at 40% DCPD the 0.5 PMGDM/PEGDMA composite showed statistically higher Ca2+ release than the control. Relaxation diffusion was the main release mechanism. Initial FT was not negatively affected by matrix composition. BFS (both DCPD fractions) and FM (30% DCPD) were lower for composites with hydrophilic/permeable networks (p < 0.01). After 60 days in water, composites with PMGDM/PEGDMA presented significant reductions in FT, while all composites had reductions in BFS/FM. SIGNIFICANCE: Increasing matrix hydrophilicity/permeability significantly increased Ca2+ release only at a high DCPD fraction.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the insertion torque (IT), flexural strength (FS) and surface alterations between stainless steel (SS-MIs) and titanium alloy (Ti-MIs) orthodontic mini-implants. METHODS: Twenty-four MIs (2 x 10 mm; SS-MIs, n = 12; Ti-MIs, n = 12) were inserted on artificial bone blocks of 20 lb/ft3 (20 PCF) and 40 lb/ft3 (40 PCF) density. The maximum IT was recorded using a digital torque meter. FS was evaluated at 2, 3 and 4 mm-deflection. Surface topography and chemical composition of MIs were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). General linear and mixed models were used to assess the effect of the MI type, bone density and deflection on the evaluated outcomes. RESULTS: The IT of Ti-MIs was 1.1 Ncm greater than that obtained for the SS-MIs (p= 0.018). The IT for MIs inserted in 40 PCF test blocks was 5.4 Ncm greater than that for those inserted in 20 PCF test blocks (p < 0.001). SS-MIs inserted in higher density bone (40 PCF) had significantly higher flexural strength than the other groups, at 2 mm (98.7 ± 5.1 Ncm), 3 mm (112.0 ± 3.9 Ncm) and 4 mm (120.0 ± 3.4 Ncm) of deflection (p< 0.001). SEM evidenced fractures in the Ti-MIs. EDS revealed incorporation of 18% of C and 2.06% of O in the loaded SS-MIs, and 3.91% of C in the loaded Ti-MIs. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings of this in vitro study, it seems that SS-MIs offer sufficient stability and exhibit greater mechanical strength, compared to Ti-MIs when inserted into higher density bone.

RESUMEN

This study analyzed the physical-chemical properties of bioactive ionomer materials. Cention N bioactive materials were evaluated chemically activated (CN) and light-cured (CN-LC), Equia Forte Fill (EQUI); conventional resin composite Filtek Z350 XT (Z350); resin glass ionomer cement Riva light Cure (RIVA) and flowable resin composite Filtek Bulk Fill Flow (BULK-F) were evaluated. Sixty specimens (n=10) were prepared for sorption (SR), solubility (SL), flexural strength (FS), shrinkage stress (SS), conversion degree (CD), microhardness (MI), and surface roughness (SR) tests. Non-cured and light-cured materials were assessed on FTIR. 30 human molar teeth were used in the bond strength test (BS). Data were subjected to ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey's test (5% of significance). EQUI showed more sorption in SR and no statistical difference from RIVA and CN-LC. CN group showed more solubility and EQUI presented less (p<0.05). BULK-F showed higher FS (MPa), without differences from CN and Z350, whereas EQUI presented the lowest FS not differing from RIVA. BULK-F and CN-LC showed more shrinkage stress differing from EQUI. CN-LC and CN showed higher CD differing from the other which showed no differences (p>0.05) between them. EQUI showed the highest hardness (p<0.05) in MI. There were no differences (p>0.05) in SR (µm). Z350 and BULK-F presented higher BS, whereas CN-LC showed the lowest, although not differing from EQUI and RIVA. Equia Forte's solubility and microhardness make it a good alternative as a restorative material. Cention N degree of conversion and flexural strength making it an esthetic option to amalgam.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to 1) compare the stress corrosion coefficient (n) of a Y-TZP obtained by two fatigue tests: cyclic and dynamic and 2) evaluate the effect of frequency in the characteristic lifetime and the existence of interaction between the cyclic fatigue and slow crack growth. METHODS: A total of 145 Y-TZP specimens were produced in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. These specimens, measuring 4.0 × 3.0 × 25.0 mm, were used for dynamic (n = 70) and cyclic fatigue tests (n = 75). The specimens were obtained from CAD/CAM blocks, sectioned, and sintered in a furnace at 1530 °C with a heating rate of 25 °C/min. They were tested in their "as-sintered" form without any additional surface treatment. The fatigue tests were conducted using a four-point bending to obtain the slow crack growth parameters (n). The cyclic fatigue test was also conducted in two frequencies (2 and 10 Hz), using stress levels between 350 and 600 MPa. Data from these tests were analyzed using ASTM C 1368-00 formulas and Weibull statistics. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for fracture surface analysis to identify the origin of the fracture. Critical defect size was measured and used, along with flexural strength values, to estimate fracture toughness. Dynamic fatigue test data were used to obtain subcritical crack growth (SCG) parameters and perform Weibull statistical analysis. The cyclic fatigue data were used in the General Log-linear Model equation using the ALTA PRO software. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey post-hoc tests and Student's t-test at a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: In the dynamic fatigue test, the values obtained for σfo and n were 667 and 54, respectively. This parameter indicates how the strength of the material diminishes over time due to internal cracks. The Weibull parameters obtained from the same test results were m = 7.9, σ0 = 968, 9 and σ5% = 767, which indicates the reliability of the material. The Weibull parameters obtained by cyclic fatigue were statistically similar for the two frequencies used, the m* was 0.17 (2 Hz) and 0.21 (10 Hz); characteristic lifetimes (η) were 1.93 × 106 and 40,768, respectively. The n values obtained by cyclic fatigue were 48 and 40 at frequencies of 2 and 10 Hz, respectively. There was no effect of the frequency, the stress level or the interaction of the two in the Y-TZP lifetime, when analysed by General Log Linear Model. SIGNIFICANCE: the n values obtained by cyclic and dynamic fatigue tests showed no statistically significant difference and the effect of frequency in the characteristic lifetime and the existence of interaction between the cyclic fatigue and subcritical growth were not observed in the tested specimens.

RESUMEN

The flexural resistence is one of the most used test in researchs of mechanical characterization of resin composites for dental restoration. ISO 4049 photopolymerization technique performed static application stages of light tip. To polymerize the entire area of the specimen some areas must receive extra radiation. These areas with extra radiation are called overlap areas. In an attempt to remedy this problem, this research compared the ISO method with a new method using constant movement (CM) during photopolymerization. Twenty specimens (SPs) were produced with 25 x 2 x 2 mm, for each group, 10 specimens being polymerized by the static technique recommended by the ISO-4049 and 10 specimens polymerized by the CM technique for each LED curing light used. After Tukey's statistical analysis, it was found that there was no statistical difference in relation to flexural strength (FS) and for the flexural modulus of elasticity (EF). However, the standard deviation of both FS and EF were much lower in MC than in ISO. Therefore, the photopolymerization by CM of the samples for the flexural strength test proved to be a possible solution to the problem of overlap of the technique proposed by ISO.

The choice of retaining material that will replace the lost properties of the tooth, in which it is fragile and with loss of dentin structure, is important. The success of the treatment will depend on the qualities presented in it. Therefore, the objective of this work, through a literature review, is to present the advantages and disadvantages observed in the use of fiberglass post intraradicular retainer. This paper reviews the most relevant articles on the specificities presented in the fiberglass post retaining material, published in the period (2003 to 2020). The bibliographic search was performed in PubMed, Lilacs, Scielo, Google Scholar databases. In view of the selected articles on the subject, it is possible to observe the authors' acceptance of the application of the use of retainers, highlighting that in the treatment of cases with extensive coronary destruction, the aim is to have the functional and retentive capacity returned, in addition to the tension resistance. Therefore, theThe use of fiberglass posts in weakened teeth is effective as the material of choice. In cases that require reconstruction and return of tissue integrity, it has sufficient advantages for its selection. Despite the disadvantages it has, these do not outweigh the benefits to the point of making its use unfeasible. However, knowing when, where and how to treat is always important in any procedure for a satisfactory final outcome.
