ABSTRACT The congenital epulis of the newborn is a benign tumor, pedunculated, with a hard consistency and variable size rare, oral and of presentation that has a predilection for females. It is usually located in the anterior and superior maxilla. In case of big size it can interfere with feeding and can cause difficult neonatal feeding. Surgical resection is the best treatment. In this paper we presents a case and a review of the literature.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT-1) protein is a useful marker for perineurial cells. Because of the possible neuroectodermal histogenesis of the granular cell tumour and congenital granular cell epulis, the aim of this study was to assess the immunoexpression of GLUT-1 protein in granular cell tumour and congenital granular cell epulis to aid in clarifying their histogenesis. METHODS: The protocol of this study was approved by the Committee of Bioethics in Research at Universidade Federal Minas Gerais. Six cases of granular cell tumour and three cases of congenital granular cell epulis were submitted to immunohistochemistry for GLUT-1 and S-100 using the streptavidin-biotin standard protocol. RESULTS: Five cases of granular cell tumour were located on the tongue and one case on the upper lip. All cases of congenital granular cell epulis were observed in the alveolar ridge of newborns. All lesions evaluated proved to be immunonegative for GLUT-1. S-100 was found to be positive in all granular cell tumours and negative in congenital granular cell epulis. CONCLUSIONS: Neither granular cell tumour nor congenital granular cell epulis is directly related to perineurial cells.

RESUMEN

Congenital granular cell lesion of the newborn, also known as congenital epulis, is a rare benign oral cavity tumor presenting at birth. Usually, it appears as a solitary mass arising in the mouth and originates from the anterior alveolar ridge. The objective of the present article is to report a case of congenital granular cell lesion in an 8-day-old female newborn. The patient presented four intraoral pedunculated lesions. Diagnosis, treatment, microscopic and immunohistochemical characteristics are also discussed.

RESUMEN

An epulis in the oral cavity of an aged captive lion in Brasilia, Brazil, is reported. Oral inspection of the animal revealed a pale blunt and irregular multilobulated mass involving the upper left caninum tooth. Microscopic features of the mass included a fibrous stroma (mesenchyme) interspaced with a few blood vessels, suggesting a periodontal ligament origin. The dense collagen fiber background had a moderate cellularity composed of regularly orientated fibroblasts and it surrounded foci of osteoid or mineralized material. Mild overlying gingival epithelial hyperplasia with some irregular cellular cords was also observed. Based on the location of the lesion as well as the gross and microscopic features, the lesion was classified as fibromatous epulis and is believed to be the first report in this species.(AU)

RESUMEN

Congenital epulis (CE) of the newborn is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that presents at birth. It occurs usually as a single mass with various sizes, although some multiple lesions have also been reported. The lesion is more common in female neonates and normally affects the maxillary alveolar ridge. Rare recurrence and no malignant alteration have also been reported. This condition may interfere with respiration, feeding or adequate closure of the mouth. A decisive diagnosis is made by histopathologic analysis as other newborn lesions can be incorrectly diagnosed as CE. This article presents a case report of a female infant who presented a fibrotic mass in the primary lateral incisor and canine region of the maxillary alveolar ridge. The lesion was not causing feeding or respiratory problems. After a watchful waiting procedure and no spontaneous regression, the lesion was excised under local anesthesia and confirmed by histopathologic analysis as CE.

RESUMEN

Congenital epulis of newborn is a rare benign tumor that is also known as a congenital granular cell tumor. The objective of this article was to describe and discuss the case of a newborn girl with a pedunculated mass in the left anterior maxillary alveolar margin diagnosed as congenital epulis. Conservative treatment was adopted and the lesion spontaneously regressed.

RESUMEN

Congenital epulis is a rare benign neoplasm of the soft tissues. Typically, this condition manifests as a firm, smooth, pink mass that appears exclusively on the alveolar ridges in newborn infants. Surgical excision usually is recommended; however, smaller lesions may disappear spontaneously over time. This article reports an unusual case of a girl whose dentist diagnosed congenital epulis when she was 16 months old; the epulis disappeared completely three months later. Diagnostic and prognostic issues and treatment options are discussed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This paper describes the case of a 7-day-old girl who was referred to a paediatric dentistry clinic because of the presence of a pedunculated mass protruding from the front of her mouth. CASE REPORT: The mass was attached to the maxillary alveolus to the right of the midline, and was clinically diagnosed as a congenital epulis. The baby had no airway obstruction and was able to feed well. A conservative treatment was proposed, with monthly follow-up appointments to monitor the lesion. CONCLUSION: After 8 months, the lesion had completely regressed, meaning that the girl did not have to be exposed to unnecessary surgical procedures in her first few days of life. The eruption of the upper anterior teeth was not affected.

RESUMEN

Multiple congenital granular cell lesions occurring on the maxillary alveolar ridge and ventral aspect of the tongue were identified in a 22-day-old girl. The prevalence, histogenesis, and treatment of this lesion are discussed and the literature is reviewed
