Burn patients often face elevated pain, anxiety, and depression levels. Music therapy adds to integrative care in burn patients, but research including electrophysiological measures is limited. This study reports electrophysiological signals analysis during Music-Assisted Relaxation (MAR) with burn patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This study is a sub-analysis of an ongoing trial of music therapy with burn patients in the ICU. Electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and electromyogram (EMG) were recorded during MAR with nine burn patients. Additionally, background pain levels (VAS) and anxiety and depression levels (HADS) were assessed. EEG oscillation power showed statistically significant changes in the delta (p < 0.05), theta (p = 0.01), beta (p < 0.05), and alpha (p = 0.05) bands during music therapy. Heart rate variability tachograms high-frequencies increased (p = 0.014), and low-frequencies decreased (p = 0.046). Facial EMG mean frequency decreased (p = 0.01). VAS and HADS scores decreased - 0.76 (p = 0.4) and - 3.375 points (p = 0.37) respectively. Our results indicate parasympathetic system activity, attention shifts, reduced muscle tone, and a relaxed state of mind during MAR. This hints at potential mechanisms of music therapy but needs to be confirmed in larger studies. Intensification of swine production can predispose pigs to chronic stress, with adverse effects on the neuroendocrine and immune systems that can lead to health problems, poor welfare, and reduced production performance. Consequently, there is an interest in developing tools to prevent or eliminate chronic stress. Music is widely used as a therapeutic strategy for stress management in humans and may have similar benefits in non-human animals. This study evaluated the effects of a music-based auditory enrichment program in pigs from a multidimensional perspective by assessing psychophysiological responses. Two experimental groups of 20 pigs each were selected for the study: one enriched, exposed to a program of functional veterinary music designed for pigs, and a control group without auditory stimulation. Qualitative behavior assessment (QBA) and skin lesions indicative of agonistic behavior were used to evaluate the psychological determinants underlying the observed behaviors. Physiological assessment included hemograms, with the determination of the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio and daily measurements of cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase levels. The results demonstrated a positive effect of a music-based auditory program on psychophysiological responses. Therefore, this strategy developed for environmental enrichment may be beneficial in reducing stress and contributing to the welfare and health of pigs under production conditions.

BACKGROUND: The authors aim to investigate the effect of music on hemodynamic fluctuations during induction of general anesthesia and reducing preoperative anxiety for women who underwent elective non-cardiac surgery. METHODS: It is a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group clinical trial. Patients were randomized 1:1 to either a Music Intervention group (MI) or a Control group (Control). The MI participants listened to their preferred music for more than 30 minutes in the waiting area. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure anxiety levels in the groups, and hemodynamic parameters (Heart Rate [HR], Mean Arterial Pressure [MAP]) were continuously recorded before induction (T0), at loss of consciousness (T1), immediately before intubation (T2), and after intubation (T3). Intubation-related adverse events were also recorded. The primary outcome was the incidence of MAP changes more than 20 % above baseline during T0-T2. RESULTS: A total of 164 patients were included in the final analyses. The incidence of MAP instability during T0-T2 was lower in the MI, and the 95 % Confidence Interval for the rate difference demonstrated the superiority of MI. HR instability was less frequent in MI participants both in T0-T2 and T2-T3. The overall incidence of preoperative anxiety was 53.7 % (88/164). After the music intervention, the mean score of STAI was significantly lower in the MI than in the Control, with a between-group difference of 8.01. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative music intervention effectively prevented hemodynamic instability during anesthesia induction and significantly reduced preoperative anxiety in women undergoing elective non-cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Restoring hand functionality is critical for fostering independence in individuals with neurological disorders. Various therapeutic approaches have emerged to address motor function restoration, with music-based therapies demonstrating notable advantages in enhancing neuroplasticity, an integral component of neurorehabilitation. Despite the positive effects observed, there remains a gap in the literature regarding implementing music treatments in neurorehabilitation, such as Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT), especially in conjunction with emerging fields like wearable devices and game-based therapies. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in various databases, including PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library. The search was performed using a literature search methodology based on keywords. Information collected from the studies pertained to the approach used in music therapy, the design of the video games, and the types of wearable devices utilized. RESULTS: A total of 158 articles were found, including 39 from PubMed, 34 from IEEE Xplore, 48 from Scopus, 37 from ACM Digital Library, and 35 from other sources. Duplicate entries, of which there were 41, were eliminated. In the first screening phase, 152 papers were screened for title and abstract. Subsequently, 89 articles were removed if they contained at least one exclusion criterion. Sixteen studies were considered after 63 papers had their full texts verified. CONCLUSIONS: The convergence of NMT with emerging fields, such as gamification and wearable devices designed for hand functionality, not only expands therapeutic horizons but also lays the groundwork for innovative, personalized approaches to neurorehabilitation. However, challenges persist in effectively incorporating NMT into rehabilitation programs, potentially hindering its effectiveness.

Importance: Preterm children are at risk for neurodevelopment impairments. Objective: To evaluate the effect of a music therapy (MT) intervention (parent-led, infant-directed singing) for premature children during the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay and/or after hospital discharge on language development at 24 months' corrected age (CA). Design, Setting, and Participants: This predefined secondary analysis followed participants in the LongSTEP (Longitudinal Study of Music Therapy's Effectiveness for Premature Infants and Their Caregivers) randomized clinical trial, which was conducted from August 2018 to April 2022 in 8 NICUs across 5 countries (Argentina, Colombia, Israel, Norway, and Poland) and included clinic follow-up visits and extended interventions after hospital discharge. Intervention: Participants were children born preterm (<35 weeks' gestation) and their parents. Participants were randomized at enrollment to MT with standard care (SC) or SC alone; they were randomized to MT or SC again at discharge. The MT was parent-led, infant-directed singing tailored to infant responses and supported by a music therapist and was provided 3 times weekly in the NICU and/or in 7 sessions across 6 months after discharge. The SC consisted of early intervention methods of medical, nursing, and social services, without MT. Main Outcome and Measures: Primary outcome was language development, as measured by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (BSID-III) language composite score, with the remaining BSID-III composite and subscale scores as the secondary outcomes. Group differences in treatment effects were assessed using linear mixed-effects models using all available data. Results: Of 206 participants (103 female infants [50%]; mean [SD] GA, 30.5 [2.7] weeks), 51 were randomized to MT and 53 to SC at enrollment; at discharge, 52 were randomized to MT and 50 to SC. A total of 112 (54%) were retained at the 24 months' CA follow-up. Most participants (79 [70%] to 93 [83%]) had BSID-III scores in the normal range (≥85). Mean differences for the language composite score were -2.36 (95% CI, -12.60 to 7.88; P = .65) for the MT at NICU with postdischarge SC group, 2.65 (95% CI, -7.94 to 13.23; P = .62) for the SC at NICU and postdischarge MT group, and -3.77 (95% CI, -13.97 to 6.43; P = .47) for the MT group at both NICU and postdischarge. There were no significant effects for cognitive or motor development. Conclusions and Relevance: This secondary analysis did not confirm an effect of parent-led, infant-directed singing on neurodevelopment in preterm children at 24 months' CA; wide CIs suggest, however, that potential effects cannot be excluded. Future research should determine the MT approaches, implementation time, and duration that are effective in targeting children at risk for neurodevelopmental impairments and introducing broader measurements for changes in brain development. Objective: This systematic review aims to assess the impact of music therapy and musical interventions on neuropsychiatric outcomes among patients with moderate and severe mental disorders, in comparison with conventional treatment in isolation. Methods: The review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted on November 16, 2021, using the following databases and search interfaces: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, SCOPUS, Web of Science; PubMed, PsycINFO, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, and Scientific Electronic Library Online. Two authors independently assessed the studies for inclusion criteria, extracted the data, and evaluated the quality of the included studies using critical appraisal tools. Results: In total, 17 studies were included, 9 of which were randomized controlled trials. The experimental studies involved 5,082 adult and elderly patients. The most prevalent symptoms assessed in the studies were anxiety, depression, and positive and negative symptoms of psychotic disorders. Music interventions were predominantly conducted by music therapists and nurses, providing passive interventions with the selection of musical repertoire by therapists and patients. The frequency with which musical interventions occurred varied greatly in terms of session duration, number of times per week, and number of times during the day. The identified study designs included clinical and quasi-experimental studies. In terms of methodological quality, clinical studies showed weaknesses regarding deviations from intended interventions. Conclusion: The effectiveness of music therapy and musical interventions for neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with moderate and severe mental disorders was evident in quasi-experimental and clinical studies with satisfactory methodological quality. Musical interventions, in various forms of application, represent an interdisciplinary therapeutic tool that complements and enhances conventional treatment. Unlike conventional treatments, the immersive and integrative nature of music interventions allows access to both intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions during periods of psychic suffering. These findings highlight the importance of researchers addressing methodological limitations, such as deviations from intended interventions, and advocate for the expansion the use of music in community treatment settings.

AIM: This study aimed to identify and map the production of knowledge on non-pharmacological strategies to reduce stress and anxiety in patients undergoing endovascular procedures. DESIGN: Scoping review. METHODS: The review was performed using the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The searches were conducted in Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Wiley Online Library, BVS/BIREME, Lilacs, Gale Academic OneFile, SciELO, Cochrane Library, CAPES Catalog of Dissertations and Theses, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation Portal of Theses and Dissertations, and Theses and Dissertations from Latin America. RESULTS: Twenty-two articles were selected. The articles were published from 2001 to 2022, mostly in Iran, and there was a predominance of randomized clinical trials. The Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was the most used instrument. The findings indicated that music therapy, educational guidelines or videos on the procedure, massage, psychological preparation and aromatherapy were the main non-pharmacological therapies used to reduce anxiety and stress in patients undergoing vascular procedures.

Music therapy has been used with promising results to reduce pain and anxiety in surgical specialties. It is suggested to reduce anxiety and pain perception during dental surgeries and thereby improving clinical outcomes. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine whether listening to music during trans-alveolar mandibular third molar extraction reduces pain perception and anxiety. Methods: One hundred and forty-six adult participants were randomized into music and non-music groups, with each group comprising seventy-three participants. Each participant had trans-alveolar third molar extraction with or without music intervention depending on the group randomly assigned. Pain scores of participants were measured at one minute after consent, during and after administration of local anaesthetic, during osteotomy, after tooth delivery, and one minute after flap closure. Postoperative pain scores were recorded at one-hour, 3-hour, 6-hour, 24-hour and 48-hour after the last stitch. Pre- and post-operative anxiety scores were also recorded. Descriptive statistics was used to describe sociodemographic data. Student t-test was used to compare the mean of quantitative variables between the groups while chi-square test was used to compare proportions and to investigate association between categorical variables. The statistical significance was defined at p<0.05. Results: The study showed similar sociodemographic characteristics, baseline clinical features and duration of surgery between groups. Pain score peaked during local anaesthetic administration (p = 0.254) and at 3 hours after surgery (p = 0.170) but no statistically significant difference was observed in the mean pain score. The mean anxiety scores also revealed no statistically significant differences. Conclusion: Music was found to add no significant anxiolytic and adjunctive analgesic benefit to participants who underwent third molar surgeries in this study

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether music therapy (MT) is effective to reduce pain during daily personal hygiene care (DPHC), a procedure performed in all patients in a pediatric intensive care unit. METHODS: Fifty critically ill children were enrolled in a crossover controlled clinical trial with random ordering of the intervention, that is, passive MT, and standard conditions, and blind assessment of pain on film recordings. The primary outcome was variation of the Face Legs Activity Cry Consolability (FLACC) score (range, 0-10) comparing before and during DPHC. Secondary outcomes were changes in heart rate, respiratory rate, and mean arterial blood pressure, and administration of analgesic or sedative drugs during DPHC. Mixed-effects linear model analysis was used to assess effect size (95% CI). RESULTS: The median (Q25-Q75) age and weight of the patients were 3.5 years (1.0-7.6 years) and 15.0 kg (10.0-26.8 kg). Consecutive DPHC were assessed on days 3 (2-5) and 4 (3-7) of hospitalization. In standard conditions, FLACC score was 0.0 (0.0-3.0) at baseline and 3.0 (1.0-5.5) during DPHC. With MT, these values were, respectively, 0.0 (0.0-1.0) and 2.0 (0.5-4.0). Rates of FLACC scores of >4 during DPHC, which indicates severe pain, were 42% in standard conditions and 17% with MT (P = .013). Mixed-effects model analysis found smaller increases in FLACC scores (-0.54 [-1.08 to -0.01]; P = .04) and heart rate (-9.00; [-14.53; -3.40]; P = .001) with MT. CONCLUSIONS: MT is effective to improve analgesia in critically ill children exposed to DPHC. Objetivo: compreender as percepções de gestantes e puérperas sobre o uso da música como tecnologia de cuidado para promoção da saúde. Método: estudo qualitativo, fundamentado nos pressupostos da promoção da saúde, realizado com sete gestantes e oito puérperas internadas na maternidade de um hospital público de Santa Catarina. Realizou-se entrevistas semiestruturadas, entre setembro de 2021 e fevereiro de 2022, após aprovação do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa. Os dados foram analisados por meio da análise de conteúdo. Resultados: a música na maternidade diminui o estresse e a tristeza. Alem disso, proporciona distração, alegria, animação, resgate de lembranças, momento especial, gratidão e tranquilidade para as mulheres hospitalizadas e para os seus bebês. Considerações finais: para as gestantes e puérperas, a música tem a capacidade de promover a saúde, sendo uma tecnologia de cuidado que deveria estar presente em todas as maternidades do Brasil(AU)
Objective: to understand the perceptions of pregnant and postpartum women about the use of music as a care technology for health promotion. Method: qualitative research, based on the assumptions of health promotion, carried out with seven pregnant women and eight postpartum women admitted to the maternity ward of a public hospital in Santa Catarina. Semi-structured interviews were carried out between September 2021 and February 2022, after approval by the Research Ethics Committee. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: music in the maternity ward reduces stress and sadness. In addition, it provides distraction, joy, animation, recall of memories, a special moment, gratitude and tranquility for hospitalized women and their babies. Final considerations: for pregnant and postpartum women, music has the ability to promote health, being a care technology that should be present in all maternity hospitals in Brazil(AU)

Las entrevistas semiestructuradas se realizaron entre septiembre de 2021 y febrero de 2022, previa aprobación del Comité de Ética en Investigación. Los datos se analizaron mediante análisis de contenido. Resultados: la música en la sala de maternidad reduce el estrés y la tristeza. Además, brinda distracción, alegría, animación, recuperación de recuerdos, momento especial, gratitud y tranquilidad para las mujeres hospitalizadas y sus bebés. Consideraciones finales: para las mujeres embarazadas y puérperas, la música tiene la capacidad de promover la salud, siendo una tecnología de atención que debe estar presente en todas las maternidades de Brasil(AU)

OBJECTIVES: Endodontic treatment is one of the most fearful procedures among dentistry, and the use of music during the procedure has been evaluated to control patients' anxiety. This systematic review has been conducted to provide a synthesis of the state of knowledge in this field and aimed to answer the following question: "Can music therapy reduce patient's state anxiety during endodontic treatment?". METHODS: A search was performed in six electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Open Gray) for articles published until April 2022. The eligibility criteria, based on the PICOS strategy, were as follows: (P) patients undergoing endodontic treatment; (I) exposure to music; (C) no music; (O) patients' anxiety; (S) only randomized clinical trials. The risk of bias was analyzed according to the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized controlled trials (RoB 2). The strength of evidence from the included studies was assessed using the Grading of Assessment, Development, and Assessment Recommendations (GRADE) tool. RESULTS: Five eligible studies were retrieved. A low to high risk of bias was verified. Descriptive analysis showed an effect in favor of music intervention, with differences among state anxiety, heart rate and blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS: With a very low quality of evidence, dental care professionals may consider playing background music during endodontic treatment since it is a cost-effective and easy alternative to trying to reduce dental anxiety. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Five studies were included in this systematic review and showed, with a very low quality of evidence, that music may reduce state anxiety levels on patients during root canal treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To map scientific knowledge about the use of percussion instruments in music therapy in individuals over 18 years of age in the health context. METHOD: Scope review with search strategy implemented in September 2021, in 13 databases, using indexed descriptors and keywords. Studies on the use of membranophones for care of people over 18 years of age were included. Studies with the participation of pregnant women, psychiatric patients (schizophrenia, psychosis, addiction), or people with hearing impairment, and journal editorials were excluded. The selection process was carried out by two independent researchers. RESULTS: Thirteen studies were included and the results showed that the membranophones have a positive impact on the physical, psychological, and social health of people in different care environments, and allow them to repeat rhythmic patterns and play music. Active music therapy was the strategy predominantly used in interventions, and the most used membranophone was the djembe. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that music therapy with membranophones proved to be a viable intervention with beneficial results in improving physical, psychological, and social health of people over 18 years of age.

Substance use disorders have significant consequences for patients and those around them. A qualitative systematic review was conducted to examine the effectiveness of religiosity and spirituality (R/S) interventions based on Judeo-Christian principles during the multidisciplinary treatment of patients with substance dependence disorder. Studies of patients of both sexes, at any age, of any nationality, and from any geographic location who were participating in treatment programs with religious elements explicitly tied to Christianity or Judaism were eligible for inclusion. Other religious interventions were excluded. Seven electronic databases were searched to identify eligible intervention studies published in English until August 2021. Two reviewers independently screened studies and extracted data. JBI tools were used to assess risk of bias. Of 146 articles retrieved for full text reading, five were ultimately included in this review published from July 2008 to August 2021. The R/S interventions used in the included studies were music therapy in a religious context, reading of the Bible or Torah, reflexive readings, personal prayer and reflection, and religiously integrated cognitive behavioral psychotherapy with or without a comparison group. Despite the broad search, there were found only a small number of studies and little homogeneity in the data of patients that reported positive impacts of treatments. Well-designed controlled studies are needed to truly investigate the efficacy of Judeo-Christian religious interventions for helping people with substance use problems, so as to strengthen the evidence of the benefits of these type of approaches in the treatment of drug addicts.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a combined music pharmacological intervention was an effective multimodal approach to reduce adult pain in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). DESIGN: A prospective, randomized control trial study. METHODS: Participants were recruited in the preoperative holding area on the day of surgery by the principal investigators. Music was selected by the patient following the informed consent process. Participants were randomized either to the intervention group or the control group. Patients in the intervention group received music in addition to standard pharmacological protocol while the control group received only the standard pharmacological protocol. Measured outcomes were change in visual analog pain scores and length of stay. FINDINGS: In this cohort (N = 134), 68 participants (50.7%) received the intervention, and 66 participants (49.3%) were in the control group. Paired t tests showed that pain scores for the control group worsened by an average of 1.45-points (95% CI: 0.75, 2.15; P < .001) compared to 0.34-points in the intervention group and was not significant (P = .314) as scores went from 1 out of 10 to 1.4 out of 10. Both control and intervention groups experienced pain, with the control group's overall pain scores worsening over time. This finding was statistically significant (P = .023). No statistically significant difference was noted in the average PACU length of stay (LOS). CONCLUSIONS: The addition of music to the standard postoperative pain protocol demonstrated a lower average pain score on discharge from the PACU. The absence of a difference in LOS may be due to the confounding variables (eg, general versus spinal anesthesia or a difference in voiding time).

ANTECEDENTES El Departamento de Salud Mental de la División de Prevención y Control de Enfermedades de la Subsecretaría de Salud Pública solicitó a la Unidad de Política de Salud Informadas por Evidencia del Departamento de Evaluaciones de Tecnología Sanitarias y Salud Basada en Evidencia de la División de Planificación Sanitaria el desarrollo de un Resumen de Evidencia para Políticas sobre el problema intervenciones no farmacológicas para abordar las necesidades de adolescentes con Trastorno del Espectro Autista (TEA). METODOLOGÍA Para la elaboración de este informe, el equipo elaborador definió el método con el que se iba a identificar y seleccionar las potenciales opciones de solución. Una vez realizada la selección de las seis opciones, se realizó una búsqueda sistemática y síntesis de evidencia del efecto sobre los desenlaces de interés de cada una, utilizando la metodología GRADE. Luego, se hizo una búsqueda no sistemática de evidencia o antecedentes para analizar las consideraciones de implementación de cada opción. Las opciones evaluadas son: terapia cognitivo conductual, musicoterapia, videomodelamiento, terapia basada en mindfulness, terapia mediada por pares, y terapia de integración sensorial. Los desenlaces de salud priorizados fueron: regulación emocional, síntomas depresivos, síntomas ansiosos, funcionamiento social, calidad de vida y bienestar, habilidades de la vida diaria autodeterminación. RESULTADOS Se observó que la terapía cognitivo conductual y la terapia basada en mindfulness reportan mejoras leves en todos los desenlaces priorizados (certeza de la evidencia de muy baja, baja o moderada). Musicoterapia reporta mejoras leves en la mayoría de los priorizados (certeza de la evidencia baja o muy baja). Mientras que en las intervenciones de videomodelamiento y terapia de integración sensorial, existe amplia incertidumbre dado los resultados y metodología de los estudios encontrados. DISCUSIÓN Las distintas opciones deben ser evaluadas en cuanto a su viabilidad de implementación en el contexto chileno. Algunas requieren capacitación, lugares habilitados, protocolización, etc., lo cual debe ser considerado por los tomadores de decisiones.

La musicoterapia es el uso profesional, planificado y estructurado de la música como intervención terapéutica, con el objetivo de mejorar la salud y calidad de vida del paciente o el grupo intervenido. Esta herramienta se basa en la evidencia de efectos neuroplásticos, psicológicos y cognitivos de la música en las personas. En las últimas décadas se ha encontrado evidencia de múltiples beneficios de musicoterapia como tratamiento adyuvante en medicina, entre ellos se destacan: reducción del dolor en enfermedades crónicas, oncológicas, procedimientos quirúrgicos y trabajo de parto, disminución de síntomas depresivos y ansiosos en trastornos del ánimo y demencia, mejoría de la sincronización motora y perceptiva en enfermedad de Parkinson, entre otros. La otorrinolaringología se ha establecido, asimismo, como un nicho plausible para musicoterapia. Actualmente existen numerosas líneas de investigación que se han dedicado a generar evidencia científica en torno a musicoterapia y su utilidad en diversos campos de la especialidad; esta revisión pretende recopilar y analizar dicha evidencia. Los resultados obtenidos en los diferentes estudios sugieren, con evidencia de calidad baja a moderada, que existen beneficios significativos en la utilización de esta herramienta en el tratamiento multimodal de tinnitus, manejo del dolor y ansiedad en procedimientos médico-quirúrgicos, y en la rehabilitación de pacientes con hipoacusia e implantes cocleares. Si bien se ha encontrado que la música es una modalidad terapéutica segura, barata y con beneficios que parecen ser prometedores, se requieren más estudios clínicos de buena calidad y validez para recomendar el uso de musicoterapia en otorrinolaringología.
Music therapy is the professional, planned, and structured use of music as a therapeutic intervention, with the objective of improving the health and quality of life of the patient or the intervened group. This tool is based on the evidence of neuroplastic, psychological and cognitive effects of music in people. In the last decades there has been evidence of multiple benefits of music therapy as an adjuvant treatment in medicine, among them: reduction of pain in chronic diseases, oncology, surgical procedures and labor, reduction of depressive and anxious symptoms in mood disorders and dementia, improvement of motor and perceptual synchronization in Parkinson's disease, among others. Otorhinolaryngology has also been established as a plausible niche for music therapy. Currently there are numerous research lines that have been devoted to generate scientific evidence on music therapy and its usefulness in various fields of the specialty, this review aims to compile and analyze such evidence. The results obtained in the different studies suggest, with low to moderate quality evidence, that there are significant benefits in the use of this tool in the multimodal treatment of tinnitus, pain and anxiety management in medical-surgical procedures, and in the rehabilitation of patients with hypoacusis and cochlear implants. Even though music has been found to be a safe and inexpensive therapeutic modality with benefits that appear to be promising, more clinical studies of good quality and validity are required to recommend the use of music therapy in otorhinolaryngology.

Con baja certeza de la evidencia, se observa que la terapia cognitivo conductual mejora levemente el funcionamiento social en adolescentes con TEA, en comparación con no recibir la intervención. Con muy baja certeza de la evidencia, se observa que la terapia cognitiva conductual en adolescentes con TEA podría mejorar la calidad de vida y el bienestar, y mejorar levemente la regulación emocional, síntomas depresivos, síntomas ansiosos, y la auto-determinación. La evidencia es limitada y se requieren más estudios para confirmar este resultado. Las distintas formas de terapia cognitivo conductual suelen ser manualizadas y requieren formación del profesional y logística en escuelas, centros de salud o donde se aplique. Existen además otras consideraciones de implementabilidad que se deben ajustar al contexto local. OPCIÓN 2: Musicoterapia: Con baja certeza de la evidencia, se observa que la musicoterapia en adolescentes con TEA mejora levemente la calidad de vida y regulación emocional, en comparación con no recibir la intervención. Con muy baja certeza de la evidencia, se observa que la musicoterapia en adolescentes con TEA podría mejorar síntomas depresivos y podría mejorar levemente la funcionalidad social, y habilidades de la vida diaria. La evidencia es limitada y se requieren más estudios para confirmar este resultado. OPCIÓN 3: Videomodelamiento No es posible establecer el efecto del videomodelamiento en adolescentes con TEA sobre la regulación emocional, funcionamiento social, habilidades de la vida diaria, y auto-determinación en comparación con no realizar la intervención. No se encontraron estudios que evaluaran los desenlaces de regulación emocional, síntomas depresivos, síntomas ansiosos, y calidad de vida y bienestar. Para esta intervención, los modelos podían ser pares, adultos o los mismos participantes, los facilitadores de la intervención fueron profesores, prestadores de salud o padres/cuidadores. Además, existen otras consideraciones de implementabilidad que se deben ajustar al contexto local. OPCIÓN 4: Terapia basada en mindfulness Con muy baja certeza de la evidencia, se observa que la terapia basada en mindfulness en adolescentes con TEA comparación con control podría mejorar levemente la regulación emocional, los síntomas depresivos, síntomas ansiosos, funcionamiento social, calidad de vida y bienestar, habilidades de la vida diaria y auto-determinación. La evidencia es limitada y se requieren más estudios para confirmar este resultado. Su aplicabilidad depende de la guía por parte de profesionales de salud formados en mindfulness o instructores (no profesionales de salud); en setting ambulatorio o colegios. La mayoría se implementó en formato grupal y ninguna incluía a cuidadores o familiares. Además, existen otras consideraciones de implementabilidad que se deben ajustar al contexto local. OPCIÓN 5: Terapia mediada por pares: Con baja certeza de la evidencia, se observa que el uso de intervención mediada por pares en adolescentes con TEA podría mejorar levemente la regulación emocional, y los síntomas ansiosos en comparación con no realizar la intervención. No es posible establecer el efecto de la intervención mediada por pares en adolescentes con TEA sobre el funcionamiento social y auto-determinación, en comparación con no realizar la intervención. No se encontraron estudios que evaluaran síntomas depresivos, calidad de vida y bienestar, y habilidades de la vida diaria. La evidencia que sintetizamos incluyó a las intervenciones mediadas por pares considerando PEERS, PRT, entre otros modelos estructurados o manualizados de marca registrada, cuya aplicabilidad depende de que sean supervisadas por profesores o facilitadores entrenados. Además, existen otras consideraciones de implementabilidad que se deben ajustar al contexto local. OPCIÓN 6: Terapia de integración sensorial: Con certeza baja de la evidencia, se observa que la terapia de integración sensorial comparada en adolescentes con TEA no tiene un efecto sobre regulación emocional, funcionamiento social, y calidad de vida y bienestar. No es posible establecer el efecto de la terapia de integración sensorial en adolescentes con TEA sobre habilidades de la vida diaria y auto-determinación en comparación con control por falta de información en los estudios. No se encontraron estudios que evaluaran síntomas depresivos y síntomas ansiosos. La evidencia que sintetizamos incluyó entre las terapias de integración sensorial los modelos de Ayres, entre otros modelos estructurados o manualizados. La intervención fue aplicada por profesionales de salud entrenados, en sesiones periódicas y en setting escolar, clínico-hospitalario o clínico ambulatorio. Además, existen otras consideraciones de implementabilidad que se deben ajustar al contexto local.

Abstract Background Music-based interventions are promising for cognitive rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease; however, systematic reviews covering the topic are scarce. Objective To analyze the effectiveness of music-based interventions for cognitive rehabilitation in PD. Method Systematic review study based on PRISMA criteria. The descriptors Parkinson's disease, Parkinson's disease, idiopathic Parkinson's disease, music-based interventions, music therapy, music training, auditory stimulation, music, rhythm, rhythmic, cognition, and cognitive were used. Five databases were searched PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane in May 2022. Only randomized controlled trials with no limit on publication date or language were included. Risk of bias was assessed following Cochrane Collaboration criteria for development of systematic intervention reviews. Results Nine hundred nineteen articles were found by the descriptors; 266 were excluded for being repeated; 650 for not meeting the inclusion criteria. The remaining three articles were included and analyzed. The interventions consisted of practices with emphasis on rhythm and were conducted in groups. Risks of important biases were observed, such as lack of blinding in the allocation of participants and in the assessment of outcomes, as well as incomplete data for some outcomes. Conclusion Overall, the results showed no evidence of efficacy of music-based interventions for cognitive outcomes in PD.

Introducción: La relación entre producción de leche materna y la música ha sido reportada en diversas publicaciones científicas. No hay publicaciones en Uruguay que analicen esta relación. Este estudio fue realizado por el Instituto Universitario CEDIIAP junto a la Universidad ORT, el Banco de Leche Humana del Hospital Pereira Rossell (CHPR), de la Administración de los Servicios de Salud del Estado. Fue aprobado por el Comité de Ética del CHPR. Objetivo: evidenciar la relación entre el estímulo musical y la producción de leche de madres de recién nacidos pretérmino internados en Cuidados Intensivos del CHPR. Material y métodos: estudio cuasiexperimental, de corte longitudinal, prospectivo, diseño doble: intervención antes después y en paralelo (un grupo contra el otro) utilizando audición de canciones elegidas por las madres con andamiento modificado. Criterios de inclusión: cohorte de madres de recién nacidos ≤ 34 semanas de gestación, sin alimentación a pecho directo, medicación psiquiátrica o que afectara la producción de leche. Se analizó cortisol en saliva y volumen de leche. Como análisis multivariado final, se aplicó el modelo lineal general de medidas repetitivas. Resultados: el estudio se realizó entre marzo de 2017 y agosto de 2018 con 31 madres (15 intervención, 16 control). El grupo intervención presentó mayor producción láctea en los 2 primeros días y disminución del 57 % en niveles de cortisol frente al grupo control. Conclusiones: más allá de las limitaciones del trabajo, los resultados apuntan a que la musicoterapia podría colaborar en la disminución del estrés, el disfrute de la lactancia materna y, consecuentemente, en una mayor producción de leche.
Introduction: the relationship between breast milk production and music has been previously reported in several peer reviewed journals. There are no studies in Uruguay analyzing this relationship. The present study was performed by the CEDIIAP University Institute jointly with the ORT University, at the Pereira Rossell Hospital Human Milk Bank (CHPR) of the Administration of State Health Services (ASSE) in Montevideo. It has been approved by the CHPR's Ethics Committee. Objective: demonstrate the influence of musical stimulation on milk production of mothers with preterm newborns admitted in the CHPR Neonatology Intensive Care Unit. Material and Methods: longitudinal, prospective experimental study with double design: intervention before, simultaneous (one group against the other) and after the study. We used the music therapy technique of listening to songs chosen by the mothers and modified gait. Milk volume was quan- tified, and cortisol presence was analyzed in saliva. The General Linear Model of repetitive measures was applied. Inclusion criteria: cohort of mothers of newborns ≤ 34 weeks of gestation, without direct breastfeeding, psychiatric medication or affecting milk production. Saliva cortisol levels and milk volume were analyzed. As a final multivariate analysis, the General Linear Model of repetitive measures was applied. Results: the study was carried out from March 2017 till August 2018 with a total of 31 mothers (15 intervention, 16 control). Higher milk production in the first two days and a decrease of 57% in cortisol levels were observed in the intervention group compared to the control group. Conclusions: in spite of the limitations of this paper, our results suggest that music therapy can help to reduce the stress and increase the enjoyment of breastfeeding and consequently generate a higher milk production.

Material e metodo: estudo quase experimental de corte longitudinal, prospectivo com desenho duplo: intervenção antes, depois e em paralelo (um grupo contra o outro) utilizando a audição de canções escolhidas pelas mães e andamento modificado. Critérios de inclusão: coorte de mães de recém nascidos ≤ 34 semanas de gestação sem alimentação a peito direto, nem medicação psiquiátrica ou que afetara a produção de leite. Foi analisado o cortisol em saliva e o volumem de leite. Aplicouse o Modelo Linear General de medidas repetitivas como análise multivariado final. Resultados: o estudo foi realizado entre março 2017 e agosto 2018 com 31 mães (15 do grupo intervenção, 16 do grupo controle). Foi observada maior produção láctea no grupo de intervenção nos dois primeiros dias e diminuição de 57% nos níveis de cortisol em relação ao grupo controle. Conclusões: além das limitações do paper, os resultados apontam para que a musicoterapia poderia colaborar na diminuição do estresse, o desfrute da lactância materna e consequentemente poderiam resultar em uma maior produção de leite.
