RESUMEN

The G4 Alliance and its member organizations formed a delegation that participated in the 76th World Health Assembly (WHA) in 2023, which unanimously adopted the resolution to address micronutrient deficiencies through safe, effective food fortification to prevent congenital disorders such as spina bifida and anencephaly, the first neurosurgery-led resolution since the founding of the World Health Organization. The WHA included other resolutions and side events by the G4 Alliance and other organizations relevant to neurosurgery. An opportunity exists for neurosurgeons to harness the momentum from this resolution to promote initiatives to prevent neurosurgical disease or expand access to neurosurgical care.

RESUMEN

img src="/images/viorel_scripcariu.jpg" alt="Viorel Scripcariu" style="float: right;max-width: 30%;"/ Assuming the leadership of the Romanian Society of Surgery for the next four years is for me a moment of deep significance and responsibility. With a tradition of almost 130 years, this organization is at the foundation of the Romanian surgeon community, and my role is to continue this legacy and open new paths for the future of Romanian surgery. I would like to share the priorities I have set for this mandate, given our shared commitment to promote excellence in surgical practice and to respond to contemporary challenges. An essential aspect of my mandate is to respect the rich tradition and history of Romanian surgery. The Romanian Society of Surgery was founded at the end of the 19th century in Bucharest, with the surgeon Constantin Severeanu at its head. At the meeting on January 27, 1899, the society constituted its first board, with Thoma Ionescu as president, together with other founding members such as Dr. Leonte, Dr. Racoviceanu-Pitesti, Dr. Duma and Dr. Staicovici. Over the years, numerous meetings were organized at the Institute of Topographic Anatomy in Bucharest, where clinical cases, new surgical methods and lectures by medical personalities from abroad were presented. Over the years, the society has continued to promote international collaboration, organizing congresses and inviting renowned surgeons from abroad to lecture and perform innovative surgery in Romania. This rich history and respect for traditional values are fundamental to preserving and enhancing the standards of excellence we have inherited. We will continue our efforts to honor our mentors and their achievements, ensuring that their legacy will continue to inspire and guide new generations of Romanian surgeons. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: To the authors' knowledge, no systematic review has examined the definition of safety leadership in the academic literature to date. A review was therefore carried out to determine how safety leadership was defined in the peer reviewed empirical literature and thematic analysis was employed to identify patterned meanings across the data. METHOD: Thirty-seven primary definitions, or definitions that were not borrowed from other studies, were identified. Of these 37, seven conceptual definitions were found to be evidence-based, six of which were endorsed by their operational counterpart definitions and one which was derived using exploratory research. RESULTS: These seven definitions showed strong alignment with the three themes that emerged from the thematic analysis that capture the why, how, and who of safety leadership. Transformational leadership theory formed the foundation for many of the definitions in the academic literature, despite recent evidence suggesting that adopting multiple forms of leadership styles would be more effective for improving workplace safety. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Gaps in the current evidence base are explored and suggestions for future research are discussed.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Faith community nursing often is anchored in a community through local networks that support the development of both the ministry and the faith community nurse. Such local networks are established and sustained through the leadership of faith community nurses (FCNs). A research study interviewed nurses recognized as foundational to the development of FCNs in the United States from 1984 to 2000. The Waterwheel Model of Spiritual Leadership was used as a construct for interviewing 24 FCN leaders discovered through Delphi methodology. An adaptation of Colazzi's method of qualitative analysis was used to analyze data collected in videotaped format. Three predominant themes emerged that may be instrumental to developing future FCN leaders and growth of this specialty nursing practice.

RESUMEN

Thanks to their guidance and coaching skills, advanced practice nurses (APNs) support teams on a daily basis in improving their practices and developing their reflexivity. Their leadership enables caregivers to question themselves, exchange ideas and think about care from a different angle. Situational analysis sessions provide a space for them to step back, debate and innovate. This meaningful support enabled a newly-qualified IPA to find her place among the teams. Here's a testimonial.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Indigenous knowledge and responses were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect health, showcasing how Indigenous communities participation in health systems could be a pathway to increase resilience to emergent hazards like climate change. This study aimed to inform efforts to enhance climate change resilience in a health context by: (1) examining if and how adaptation to climate change is taking place within health systems in the Peruvian Amazon, (2) understanding how Indigenous communities and leaders' responses to climatic hazards are being articulated within the official health system and (3) to provide recommendations to increase the climate change resilience of Amazon health systems. METHODS: This study was conducted among two Peruvian Amazon healthcare networks in Junin and Loreto regions. A mixed methodology design was performed using a cross-sectional survey (13 healthcare facilities), semistructured interviews (27 official health system participants and 17 Indigenous participants) and two in-person workshops to validate and select key priorities (32 participants). We used a climate-resilient health system framework linked to the WHO health systems building blocks. RESULTS: Indigenous and official health systems in the Peruvian Amazon are adapting to climate change. Indigenous responses included the use of Indigenous knowledge on weather variability, vegetal medicine to manage health risks and networks to share food and resources. Official health responses included strategies for climate change and response platforms that acted mainly after the occurrence of climate hazards. Key pathways to articulate Indigenous and official health systems encompass incorporating Indigenous representations in climate and health governance, training the health work force, improving service delivery and access, strengthening the evidence to support Indigenous responses and increasing the budget for climate emergency responses. CONCLUSIONS: Key resilience pathways call for a broader paradigm shift in health systems that recognises Indigenous resilience as valuable for health adaptation, moves towards a more participatory health system and broadens the vision of health as a dimension inherently tied to the environment.

RESUMEN

Clinical learning environment play a vital role in bridging theory with practice, equipping nursing students with essential skills for patient care and support their smooth transition into the nursing workforce. To assess Palestinian nursing students' perceptions of clinical learning environment and supervision. A total of 308 undergraduate nursing students were conveniently recruited from Arab American University-Palestine for this descriptive cross-sectional study. Data collection utilized the Arabic version of the Clinical Learning Environment and Supervision plus Nurse Teacher scale. In general, nursing students expressed positive perceptions regarding their clinical learning environment (M = 130.56 ± 21.03), with the "supervisory relationship" and "role of nurse teacher" scoring highest (M = 3.85 ± 0.82 each). Conversely, the lowest rating was observed for "leadership style of the ward manager" (M = 3.8 ± 0.84). Fourth-year students and those trained in public hospitals showed significantly more positive perceptions (P < .001). Furthermore, students with higher professional satisfaction had more positive perceptions of the clinical learning environment (P < .001). The positive perceptions of Palestinian nursing students underscore the importance of the supervisory relationship and nurse teacher. However, finding suggest an area for improvement in the leadership style of the ward manager, emphasizing the necessity for strengthened partnership between nursing faculties and healthcare facilities. These insights expand our understanding of student perceptions and stress the importance of addressing these concerns to adequately prepare students for professional practice.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To understand how nursing care management occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: A qualitative study conducted at a university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. The sample consisted of eight nurses who worked caring for patients who tested positive for COVID-19. Data collection was carried out through semi structured interviews about experiences in managing care in coping with the pandemic. Thematic analysis and interpretation based on psychodynamics of work were used in data analysis. RESULTS: The results allowed constructing three thematic categories: The invisible that limits: biosafety, distress, uncertainty and fear of the pandemic, protecting oneself and ensuring the protection of others; Management work process instruments: team training, staff sizing, materials management, creative practice in the face of insufficiency; The competencies involved with the team, teamwork and leadership. CONCLUSION: Care management in COVID-19 was permeated by objective and subjective conditions, with situations of distress, pleasure, fear, insecurity and creative adaptation. Teamwork and leadership competencies, when present, can alleviate the distress that occurs in nursing work.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Communication is considered an inherent element of nearly every implementation strategy. Often it is seen as a means for imparting new information between stakeholders, representing a Transaction orientation to communication. From a Process orientation, communication is more than information-exchange and is acknowledged as being shaped by (and shaping) the individuals involved and their relationships with one another. As the field of Implementation Science (IS) works to strengthen theoretical integration, we encourage an interdisciplinary approach that engages communication theory to develop richer understanding of strategies and determinants of practice. METHODS: We interviewed 28 evaluators, 12 implementors, and 12 administrators from 21 Enterprise-Wide Initiatives funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs Office of Rural Health. Semi-structured interviews focused on experiences with implementation and evaluation strategies. We analyzed the interviews using thematic analysis identifying a range of IS constructs. Then we deductively classified those segments based on a Transaction or Process orientation to communication. RESULTS: We organized findings using the two IS constructs most commonly discussed in interviews: Collaboration and Leadership Buy-in. The majority of segments coded as Collaboration (n = 34, 74%) and Leadership Buy-in (n = 31, 70%) discussed communication from a Transaction orientation and referred to communication as synonymous with information exchange, which emphasizes the task over the relationships between the individuals performing the tasks. Conversely, when participants discussed Collaboration and Leadership Buy-in from a Process orientation, they acknowledged both constructs as the result of long-term efforts to develop positive relationships based on trust and respect, and emphasized the time costliness of such strategies. Our findings demonstrate that participants who discussed communication from a Process orientation recognized the nuance and complexity of interpersonal interactions, particularly in the context of IS. CONCLUSIONS: Efficient, reliable information exchange is a critical but often overemphasized element of implementation. Practitioners and researchers must recognize and incorporate the larger role of communication in IS. Two suggestions for engaging a Process orientation to communication are to: (a) use interview probes to learn how communication is enacted, and (b) use process-oriented communication theories to develop interventions and evaluation tools.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In occupational therapy, leadership development is a fundamental skill and social process needed to advance the profession. However, there is scant literature on leadership development. Further examination of leadership development in the occupational therapy literature may provide helpful insights and strengthen the opportunity to study this concept and its efficacy. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: The focus of this concept analysis was to conduct a review of the historical and contemporary occupational therapy literature to evaluate how the profession distinguishes the concept of leadership development. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A principle-based concept analysis provides holistic perspectives of a concept by examining its historical and linguistic foundations. RESULTS: Dialogue about leadership development was primarily situated in grey literature with few articles found in empirical-focused, peer-reviewed journals. The analysis revealed that leadership development was understood as both a process and an outcome and was intended to support the promotion of the profession. CONCLUSION: Despite using similar language to describe the concept, the literature did not yield one cohesive definition of leadership development. SIGNIFICANCE: A definition was proposed that integrated the various perspectives to support future empirical research around a centralized understanding of the concept of leadership development.

The concept analysis revealed that occupational therapy leadership development is seen as a process and an outcome. Key themes from an epistemological perspective showed that leadership development is a social and mentored process and can be achieved through engagement in various strategies and contexts.Little empirical evidence exists on the outcome of leadership development strategies in occupational therapy, thus providing a challenge in operationalizing the concept. More research is needed to determine the outcome of occupational therapy leadership development approaches.Based on the existing literature, a theoretical definition of leadership development was proposed with the anticipation to serve as a basis for future research.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals' job satisfaction is a critical indicator of healthcare performance, pivotal in addressing challenges such as hospital quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and staff retention rates. Existing evidence underscores the significant influence of healthcare leadership on job satisfaction. Our study aims to assess the impact of leadership support on the satisfaction of healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and administrative staff, in China's leading hospitals. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted on healthcare professionals in three leading hospitals in China from July to December 2021. These hospitals represent three regions in China with varying levels of social and economic development, one in the eastern region, one in the central region, and the third in the western region. Within each hospital, we employed a convenience sampling method to conduct a questionnaire survey involving 487 healthcare professionals. We assessed perceived leadership support across five dimensions: resource support, environmental support, decision support, research support, and innovation encouragement. Simultaneously, we measured satisfaction using the MSQ among healthcare professionals. RESULTS: The overall satisfaction rate among surveyed healthcare professionals was 74.33%. Our study revealed significant support from senior leadership in hospitals for encouraging research (96.92%), inspiring innovation (96.30%), and fostering a positive work environment (93.63%). However, lower levels of support were perceived in decision-making (81.72%) and resource allocation (80.08%). Using binary logistic regression with satisfaction as the dependent variable and healthcare professionals' perceived leadership support, hospital origin, job role, department, gender, age, education level, and professional designation as independent variables, the results indicated that support in resource provision (OR: 4.312, 95% CI: 2.412 ∼ 7.710) and environmental facilitation (OR: 4.052, 95% CI: 1.134 ∼ 14.471) significantly enhances healthcare personnel satisfaction. CONCLUSION: The findings underscore the critical role of leadership support in enhancing job satisfaction among healthcare professionals. For hospital administrators and policymakers, the study highlights the need to focus on three key dimensions: providing adequate resources, creating a supportive environment, and involving healthcare professionals in decision-making processes.

RESUMEN

Employees' work engagement may vary by work location (office vs. home office), assuming that working at home requires greater self-regulation. Hence, self-leadership may play an important role when employees work at home. The present study investigates whether employees use self-leadership strategies (self-goal setting, self-reward, self-punishment, self-cueing, and visualization of successful performance) more often on home days than on office days. We also examine how these strategies are related to daily work engagement, and whether they are more effective for promoting work engagement depending on the work location. One hundred and one employees completed daily questionnaires on office and home days, resulting in 514 observations. Multilevel analyses revealed that employees reported higher use of self-goal setting, self-reward, and visualization on home days than on office days. Furthermore, we found that applying these strategies was positively related to day-specific work engagement. Nevertheless, self-cueing had no effect and self-punishment was detrimental to work engagement. Moreover, we found no support for the idea that the effectiveness of self-leadership strategies for promoting work engagement depends on the work location. These findings contribute to our understanding of self-leadership strategies promoting work engagement on home and office days.

RESUMEN

Systems of care (SOC) is a proven and community-based service network addressing the mental health needs of children and families. Child and adolescent psychiatrists play a crucial role in leading SOCs, utilizing skills such as partnership building and strategic planning. Barriers to mental health care, including access issues and stigma, can be tackled through multisector collaboration. Overcoming challenges such as cultural differences and fragmented systems requires effective leadership. In a SOC, core principles involve culturally competent care, evidence-based practices, collaborative decision-making, and smooth transitions of care. Championing these principles fosters a holistic and supportive environment for those facing mental health challenges.
