Nowadays, it is still a challenge to prepared high efficiency and low cost formaldehyde (HCHO) removal catalysts in order to tackle the long-living indoor air pollution. Herein, δ-MnO2 is successfully synthesized by a facile ozonation strategy, where Mn2+ is oxidized by ozone (O3) bubble in an alkaline solution. It presents one of the best catalytic properties with a low 100% conversion temperature of 85°C for 50 ppm of HCHO under a GHSV of 48,000 mL/(g·hr). As a comparison, more than 6 times far longer oxidation time is needed if O3 is replaced by O2. Characterizations show that ozonation process generates a different intermediate of tetragonal ß-HMnO2, which would favor the quick transformation into the final product δ-MnO2, as compared with the relatively more thermodynamically stable monoclinic γ-HMnO2 in the O2 process. Finally, HCHO is found to be decomposed into CO2 via formate, dioxymethylene and carbonate species as identified by room temperature in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy. All these results show great potency of this facile ozonation routine for the highly active δ-MnO2 synthesis in order to remove the HCHO contamination.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the efficacy of remote versus in-person training strategies to teach ultrasound guided knee arthrocentesis using formalin embalmed cadavers. METHODS: 30 first-year medical student participants were randomly assigned to remote or in-person training groups. Pre- and post- training surveys were used to evaluate participant's self-confidence in their ability to perform the procedure. Participants were asked to watch a 30-minute training video and then attend a skills training workshop. The workshops consisted of 20 min of hands-on instruction followed by a skills assessment. RESULTS: Following training, participant self-confidence increased significantly across all survey items in both groups (p = 0.0001). No significant changes in participant self-confidence were detected between the groups. Skills and knowledge-related metrics did not differ significantly between the groups with the exception of the "knowledge of instruments" variable. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggests that remote ultrasound-guided procedure training, although logistically complex, is a viable alternative to traditional in-person learning techniques even for a notoriously hands on skill like ultrasound guided knee arthrocentesis. Novice first-year medical student operators in the remote-training group were able to significantly increase their confidence and demonstrate competency in a manner statistically indistinguishable from those trained in-person. These results support the pedagogical validity of using remote training to teach ultrasound guided procedures which could have implications in rural and global health initiatives where educational resources are more limited.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the research presented here is to determine if methods previously developed for the aqueous extraction of PrPSc from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue (FFPET) are applicable to the detection PrPSc by real-time quaking induced conversion (RT-QuIC). Previous work has utilized aqueous extraction of FFPET for detection of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) utilizing western blot and ELISA. This research extends the range of suitable methods for detection of TSEs in FFPET to RT-QuIC, which is arguably the most sensitive method to detect TSEs. RESULTS: We found complete agreement between the TSE status and the results from RT-QuIC seeded with the aqueous extract of FFPET samples. The method affords the diagnostic assessment TSE status by RT-QuIC of FFPET without the use of organic solvents that would otherwise create a mixed chemical-biological waste for disposal.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) provides comprehensive, individualised cancer genomic information. However, routine tumour biopsies are formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE), damaging DNA, historically limiting their use in WGS. Here we analyse FFPE cancer WGS datasets from England's 100,000 Genomes Project, comparing 578 FFPE samples with 11,014 fresh frozen (FF) samples across multiple tumour types. We use an approach that characterises rather than discards artefacts. We identify three artefactual signatures, including one known (SBS57) and two previously uncharacterised (SBS FFPE, ID FFPE), and develop an "FFPEImpact" score that quantifies sample artefacts. Despite inferior sequencing quality, FFPE-derived data identifies clinically-actionable variants, mutational signatures and permits algorithmic stratification. Matched FF/FFPE validation cohorts shows good concordance while acknowledging SBS, ID and copy-number artefacts. While FF-derived WGS data remains the gold standard, FFPE-samples can be used for WGS if required, using analytical advancements developed here, potentially democratising whole cancer genomics to many.

Assessment of personal formaldehyde (FA) exposure is most commonly carried out using formate as a biomarker, as it is the major product from FA metabolism. However, formate could also have originated from the metabolism of other endogenous and exogenous substances or from dietary intake, which may give rise to overestimated results with regard to FA exposure. We have developed and validated a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) coupled with an isotope-dilution method for rigorous quantitation of two major urinary FA conjugation products: thioproline (SPro) and thioprolinyl glycine (SPro-Gly), formed in the reaction between FA and endogenous cysteine or cysteinyl glycine, respectively, as marker molecules to assess personal FA exposure. Using this newly developed method, we measured the FA exposure levels in cigarette smokers, occupants of a chemistry research laboratory and typical domestic household, and visitors to a Chinese temple with a Pearson correlation coefficient greater than 0.94, showing a strong linear correlation between urinary adduct levels and the airborne FA level. It is believed that quantitation of urinary SPro and SPro-Gly may represent a noninvasive, interference-free method for assessing personal FA exposure.

INTRODUCTION: The novel Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV-3) has been associated in the past years to different porcine diseases, including reproductive failure. The potential occurrence of PCV-3 in abortions from Swiss pig herds has not been investigated so far. Thus, we conducted a retrospective study on pig aborted cases submitted to our laboratory in the University of Bern during the last 10 years with the main aim of investigating the possible presence of PCV-3 in foetal and/or placental tissue. Twelve out of the 53 studied cases showed mild histopathological changes as previously described in PCV-3 positive cases. However, in none of the cases, PCV-3 genetic material could be detected in the examined formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. In only one third of the cases, a cause for the abortion was found, which is similar to other studies. Our survey suggests that PCV-3 was not involved in the porcine abortion cases submitted over the last decade at our institution in Switzerland.


INTRODUCTION: Le nouveau Circovirus porcin 3 (PCV-3) a été associé ces dernières années à différentes maladies porcines, y compris des troubles de la reproduction. La présence potentielle du PCV-3 dans les avortements de porcs en Suisse n'a pas été étudiée jusqu'à présent. Nous avons donc mené une étude rétrospective sur les cas d'avortements de porcs soumis à notre laboratoire de l'Université de Berne au cours des 10 dernières années, dans le but principal d'étudier la présence éventuelle du PCV-3 dans les tissus fœtaux et/ou placentaires. Douze des 53 cas étudiés présentaient des changements histopathologiques légers, tels que décrits précédemment dans les cas positifs au PCV-3. Cependant, dans aucun des cas, le matériel génétique du PCV-3 n'a pu être détecté dans les tissus examinés fixés au formol et inclus en paraffine. Dans un tiers des cas seulement, une cause d'avortement a été trouvée, ce qui est similaire à d'autres études. Notre étude suggère que le PCV-3 n'a pas été impliqué dans les cas d'avortements porcins soumis au cours de la dernière décennie dans notre institution en Suisse.

2,4-dihydroxybutyric acid (DHB) and 2-keto-4-hydroxybutyrate (OHB) are non-natural molecules obtained through synthetic pathways from renewable carbon source. As they are structurally similar to lactate and pyruvate respectively, they could possibly interfere with the metabolic network of Escherichia coli. In fact, we showed that DHB can be easily oxidized by the membrane associated L and D-lactate dehydrogenases encoded by lldD, dld and ykgF into OHB, and the latter being cleaved into pyruvate and formaldehyde by several pyruvate-dependent aldolases, with YagE being the most effective. While formaldehyde was readily detoxified into formate, Escherichia coli K12 MG1655 strain failed to grow on DHB despite of the production of pyruvate. To find out the reason for this failure, we constructed a mutant strain whose growth was rendered dependent on DHB and subjected this strain to adaptive evolution. Genome sequencing of the adapted strain revealed an essential role for ygbI encoding a transcriptional repressor of the threonate operon in this DHB-dependent growth. This critical function was attributed to the derepression of ygbN encoding a putative threonate transporter, which was found to exclusively transport the D form of DHB. A subsequent laboratory evolution was carried out with E. coli K12 MG1655 deleted for ΔygbI to adapt for growth on DHB as sole carbon source. Remarkably, only two additional mutations were disclosed in the adapted strain, which were demonstrated by reverse engineering to be necessary and sufficient for robust growth on DHB. One mutation was in nanR encoding the transcription repressor of sialic acid metabolic genes, causing 140-fold increase in expression of nanA encoding N-acetyl neuraminic acid lyase, a pyruvate-dependent aldolase, and the other was in the promoter of dld leading to 14-fold increase in D-lactate dehydrogenase activity on DHB. Taken together, this work illustrates the importance of promiscuous enzymes in underground metabolism and moreover, in the frame of synthetic pathways aiming at producing non-natural products, these underground reactions could potentially penalize yield and title of these bio-based products.

OBJECTIVE: Isorhamnetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid compound, holds paramount importance as a primary constituent within several medicinal plants, exhibiting profound pharmacological significance. The aim of this study is to investigate the pain-relieving attributes of isorhamnetin in murine models through both formalin-induced pain and diabetic neuropathy scenarios. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To achieve our objective, isorhamnetin was orally administered to mice at varying dosage levels (10 to 100 mg/kg). Pain-related behaviors were assessed using the formalin test during its secondary phase. Additionally, the potential pain-alleviating effect of isorhamnetin was evaluated in a diabetic neuropathy model induced by streptozotocin. Additionally, we carried out advanced interventions using naloxone, which is a well-known antagonist of opioid receptors, yohimbine, which blocks α2-adrenergic receptors, and methysergide, which inhibits serotonergic receptors, during the formalin test. RESULTS: The oral intake of isorhamnetin showed a decrease in behaviors associated with pain that was proportional to the dose observed during the second phase of the formalin test when induced by formalin. In the diabetic neuropathy model, isorhamnetin administration effectively reversed the reduced pain threshold observed. Notably, naloxone, the opioid receptor antagonist, effectively counteracted the pain-relieving effect produced by isorhamnetin in the formalin test, whereas yohimbine and methysergide did not yield similar outcomes. Isorhamnetin also led to a reduction in elevated spinal cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element binding protein (CREB) levels triggered by formalin, with this effect reversed by pre-treatment with naloxone. The compound also suppressed heightened spinal phosphorylated CREB (p-CREB) levels caused by diabetic neuropathy. CONCLUSIONS: This research determined that isorhamnetin has notable abilities to relieve pain in models of formalin-induced pain and diabetic neuropathy. The pain-relieving mechanism of isorhamnetin in the formalin-induced pain model seems to be connected to the activation of spinal opioid receptors and the adjustment of CREB protein amounts. This insight improves our knowledge of how isorhamnetin could be used therapeutically to treat pain conditions stemming from formalin-induced pain and diabetic neuropathy.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a human toxin that is both a pollutant and endogenous metabolite. HCHO concentrations in human biological samples are reported in the micromolar range; however, accurate quantification is compromised by a paucity of sensitive analysis methods. To address this issue, we previously reported a novel SPME-GC-MS-based HCHO detection method using cysteamine as an HCHO scavenger. This method showed cysteamine to be a more efficient scavenger than the widely used O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine, and enabled detection of aqueous HCHO in the nanomolar range and quantification in the micromolar range. However, quantification in this range required immersive extraction of the HCHO-derived thiazolidine, while a high background signal was also observed. Following on from these studies, we now report an optimised head-space extraction SPME-GC-MS method using cysteamine, which provides similarly sensitive HCHO quantification to the immersive method but avoids extensive wash steps and is therefore more amenable to screening applications. However, high background HCHO levels were still observed A Complementary GC-MS analyses using a 2-aza-Cope-based HCHO scavenger also revealed high background HCHO levels; therefore, the combined results suggest that HCHO exists in high (i.e. micromolar) concentration in aqueous samples that precludes accurate quantification below the micromolar range. This observation has important implications for ongoing HCHO quantification studies in water, including in biological samples.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose potential hazards to human health and contribute significantly to odor pollution. This study examined VOC emissions from a representative recycled rubber industry, evaluating the occupational health risks for frontline workers in various workshops. Variables such as gender and workshop-specific concentration variations were considered using Monte Carlo simulation methods. Employees in the five production workshops and office areas face noncarcinogenic health risks with hazard indices (HIs) greater than 1, with the rubber compounding phase presenting the highest risk. Acetaldehyde is identified as the primary noncarcinogenic health risk substance, with hazard quotient (HQ) values exceeding 1 in all workshops. Carcinogenic health risks vary by area, with the highest risks found in compounding and refining workshops. Formaldehyde poses the greatest risk in rubber grinding workshops and offices, with cumulative weights exceeding unacceptable levels of M80.58 % and W77.56 % in grinding and M94.98 % and W92.24 % in the office. Male workers face 4-7 % greater noncarcinogenic VOC health risks than females and 5-14 % greater carcinogenic risks from individual VOCs, increasing their susceptibility to health risks caused by VOCs. Additionally, our analysis of odor identification and intensity classification revealed that 53 VOCs are capable of causing odor pollution, with several substances reaching odor levels of 2 or higher. The predominant perceived odors, as reflected in the odor wheel, include categories such as "solvent/aromatic" and "sweet/fruit," with aldehydes being the primary odor-causing substances. In summary, emissions of VOCs from rubber industrial processes not only pose substantial health risks to workers but also contribute significantly to odor pollution. Consequently, enterprises must prioritize optimizing workplace conditions to ensure the occupational health and well-being of their employees.

INTRODUCTION: While ambient formaldehyde (HCHO) concentrations are increasing worldwide, there was limited research on its health effects. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association of long-term exposure to ambient HCHO with the risk of respiratory (RESP) mortality and the associated mortality burden in China. METHODS: Annual and seasonal RESP death and tropospheric HCHO vertical columns data were collected in 466 counties/districts across China during 2013-2016. A difference-in-differences approach combined with a generalized linear mixed-effects regression model was employed to assess the exposure-response association between long-term ambient HCHO exposure and RESP mortality risk. Additionally, we computed the attributable fraction (AF) to gauge the proportion of RESP mortality attributable to HCHO exposure. RESULTS: This analysis encompassed 560,929 RESP deaths. The annual mean ambient HCHO concentration across selected counties/districts was 8.02×1015 ± 2.22×1015 molec.cm-2 during 2013-2016. Each 1.00×1015 molec.cm-2 increase in ambient HCHO was associated with a 1.61 % increase [excess risk (ER), 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.20 %, 2.03 %] in the RESP mortality risk. The AF of RESP mortality attributable to HCHO was 12.16 % (95 %CI:9.33 %, 14.88 %), resulting in an annual average of 125,422 (95 %CI:96,404, 153,410) attributable deaths in China. Stratified analyses suggested stronger associations in individuals aged ≥65 years old (ER=1.87 %, 95 %CI:1.43 %, 2.32 %), in cold seasons (ER=1.00 %, 95 %CI:0.56 %, 1.44 %), in urban areas (ER=1.65 %, 95 %CI:1.15 %, 2.16 %), and in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients (ER=1.95 %, 95 %CI:1.42 %, 2.48 %). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that long-term HCHO exposure may significantly increase the risk of RESP mortality, leading to a substantial mortality burden. Targeted measures should be implemented to control ambient HCHO pollution promptly.

The number of individuals with underlying medical conditions has been increasing steadily. These individuals are relatively vulnerable to harmful external factors. But it has not been proven that the effects of hazardous chemicals may differ depending on their physicochemical properties. This study determines the toxic effects of two chemicals with high indoor exposure risk and different physicochemical properties on an underlying disease model. A pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) model was constructed by a single subcutaneous injection of monocrotaline (MCT; 60 mg/kg) into Sprague-Dawley rats. After three weeks, formaldehyde (FA; 2.5 mg/kg) and polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG; 0.05 mg/kg) were administered once via intratracheal instillation, and rats were necropsied one week later. Exposure to FA and PHMG affected organ weight and the Fulton and toxicity indices in rats induced with PAH. FA promoted bronchial injury and aggravated PAH, while PHMG only induced alveolar injury. Additionally, the differentially expressed genes were altered following exposure to FA and PHMG, as were the associated diseases (cardiovascular disease and pulmonary fibrosis, respectively). In conclusion, inhaled chemicals with different physicochemical properties can cause damage to organs, such as the lungs and heart, and can aggravate underlying diseases. This study elucidates indoor inhaled exposure-induced toxicities and alerts patients with pre-existing diseases to the harmful chemicals.

Existing issues with bio-based adhesives, such as complex preparation processes, high energy consumption, and production costs, still need to be addressed. In our study, APTES was grafted onto microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) to generate active aminated cellulose, and then reacted with the epoxide group in glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE) through a swelling strategy under alkaline solvent, forming a network structure via covalent cross-linking. The adhesive exhibits superior bonding performance and water-resistant property in the bonding strength test of poplar plywood, with a dry shear strength of 2.40 MPa, a wet shear strength of 2.16 MPa after soaking in 63 °C hot water, and a wet shear strength of 1.79 MPa after soaking in boiling water. In terms of cost calculation, the theoretical production cost of AC-GTE adhesive is calculated to be 5303.7 RMB per ton, which is comparable to that of phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin and other petrochemical-based adhesives, and significantly lower than that of isocyanate-based adhesives. These research results can provide a practical example for producing high-efficiency, aldehyde-free, and low-cost bio-based adhesives.

In the troposphere, ozone (O3) formation can be limited by NOx, VOCs, or both, complicating efforts to reduce O3 by controlling its precursors. This study used formaldehyde (HCHO) data and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) to analyze O3 formation sensitivity in Fujian from 2012 to 2021. Over the past decade, an 8.7% reduction in NO2 VCDs and a 9.91% increase in HCHO VCDs were observed. Due to differences in the primary driving factors, HCHO VCDs exhibit a characteristic seasonal pattern with higher in summer and lower in winter, whereas NO2 VCDs show the opposite trend. O3 formation chemistry was accurately diagnosed by combining satellite-based data and ground-based O3 data. A new threshold value (3.3-4.6) was derived to determine the transition from VOC-limited to NOx-limited O3 formation regimes. Results showed that O3 sensitivity exhibited pronounced seasonal variations. The VOC-limited regime predominates throughout the entire Fujian region in winter, whereas it occupies only 5% of the area in summer. A VOC-limited region was found widely across Fujian on an annual average, but it decreased by 24% over 10 years. Transitional areas experienced a 19% increase. In two natural emission reduction cases (reductions during the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday and reductions in weekend traffic emissions compared to weekdays), ground-level O3 effectively captured the impacts of sensitivity changes. The impact suggests that when Fujian is in the VOC control region, a significant reduction in NOx, without effective VOC control, might lead to an O3 increase. The importance of controlling VOC emissions is highlighted in Fujian. This study enhances the understanding of O3 formation regimes in southeastern China, which is crucial for developing O3 prevention and control strategies.

BACKGROUND: Standard training for ultrasound-guided cyst needle aspiration is currently performed on live patients during residency. This practice presents risk of iatrogenic injury to patients and provides a high-stress learning environment for medical trainees. Simulation training using synthetic cysts in a formalin-embalmed cadaver model may allow for realistic, practical, and effective training free from patient risk. METHODS: Thirty first-year medical students viewed an orientation video, then attended a skills workshop to perform cyst needle aspiration in formalin-embalmed cadaver tissue under ultrasound guidance. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three ultrasound-trained instructor-types which included a medical student, clinical anatomist, or an ultrasound fellowship trained emergency medicine physician. After training, participants underwent a 5-min skills test to assess their ability to drain a synthetic cyst independently. Pre- and post-training self-confidence surveys were administered. RESULTS: Ultrasound images of synthetic cysts in formalin-embalmed tissue were clear and realistic in appearance, and sonographic needle visualization was excellent. Participants took an average of 161.5 s and 1.9 attempts to complete the procedure. Two of the 30 participants could not complete the procedure within the time limit. Participants' self-reported confidence with respect to all aspects of the procedure significantly increased post-training. Mean confidence scores rose from 1.2 (95% CI 0.96 to 1.39) to 4.4 (95% CI 4.09 to 4.53) (P < 0.0001) Procedure time, number of attempts, performance scores, and self-confidence outcomes were not significantly affected by instructor type. CONCLUSIONS: The use of synthetic cysts in formalin-embalmed cadaveric tissue is feasible, realistic, and efficacious for the teaching of ultrasound-guided needle aspiration to novice medical trainees. This simulation training method can be delivered effectively by multiple instructor types and may allow medical trainees to increase their tactical skill and self-confidence prior to performing ultrasound-guided cyst needle aspiration on live patients.

BACKGROUND: Pathologists commonly employ the Ki67 immunohistochemistry labelling index (LI) when deciding appropriate therapeutic strategies for patients with breast cancer. However, despite several attempts at standardizing the Ki67 LI, inter-observer and inter-laboratory bias remain problematic. We developed a flow cytometric assay that employed tissue dissociation, enzymatic treatment and a gating process to analyse Ki67 in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) breast cancer tissue. RESULTS: We demonstrated that mechanical homogenizations combined with thrombin treatment can be used to recover efficiently intact single-cell nuclei from FFPE breast cancer tissue. Ki67 in the recovered cell nuclei retained reactivity against the MIB-1 antibody, which has been widely used in clinical settings. Additionally, since the method did not alter the nucleoskeletal structure of tissues, the nuclei of cancer cells can be enriched in data analysis based on differences in size and complexity of nuclei of lymphocytes and normal mammary cells. In a clinical study using the developed protocol, Ki67 positivity was correlated with the Ki67 LI obtained by hot spot analysis by a pathologist in Japan (rho = 0.756, P < 0.0001). The number of cancer cell nuclei subjected to the analysis in our assay was more than twice the number routinely checked by pathologists in clinical settings. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study showed the application of this new flow cytometry method could potentially be used to standardize Ki67 assessments in breast cancer.

Different methods for fixing biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica for light and electron microscopy were compared. Paraformaldehyde fixation did not preserve biofilm integrity during dehydration; Ito-Karnovsky fixation revealed cell morphology, but did not preserve the matrix. Ruthenium red combined with aldehydes allowed the matrix to be preserved and visualized. An analysis of the ultrastructure of S. aureus and S. enterica cells in biofilms and suspensions at various fixations is presented. The ultrastructure of the biofilm matrix has been described.

Newly synthesized vaccines prepared from formalin-killed bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes were investigated in the current study to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly synthesized vaccine as well as their safety by injected intraperitoneal. The study involved several steps 1st step is the preparation of the vaccine followed by the 2nd step: Evaluate the effectiveness and vaccine safety against pathogenic S. pyogenes through 4 different groups including control (Group I). Group II (Bacterial, infected group), Group III (Vaccine), and the Last group was the challenged group after the vaccination (Vacc + Bac). Different Immunological and biochemical parameters were measured in addition to hematological and histopathological examinations. For example, oxidative/antioxidants, inflammatory biomarkers, fragmentation and cell damage, and finally the histopathological study. The current study showed an increase in all oxidative, inflammatory, and cell damage (DNA fragmentation assays), additionally markedly elevation in histopathological cell damage in the infected group (Group II) compared with the control group. The vaccine and challenged after vaccination group (vaccine + Bacteria), showed great improvement in oxidative biomarkers (LPO) and an increase in antioxidants biomarkers (GSH, SOD, GST, DPPH, ABTS, GR and GPx), Also the inflammation and histopathological examination. The newly synthesized vaccine improved the resistance of Oreochromis niloticus and can be used as a preventive therapy agent for pathogenic bacteria S. pyogenes.

The weak contacts between disulfide linkages and carbonyl groups are anticipated to be important in determining the structure and function of enzymes and proteins. However, the characteristics of the disulfide-carbonyl n → π* (nSS → π* C═O) interactions remain unexplored. Herein, we investigated the nSS → π* C═O interactions in the gas phase and in proteins. Rotational spectroscopic investigation of a model complex of allyl methyl disulfide with formaldehyde identified two structures, both of which are stabilized through a dominant nSS → π* C═O interaction. Surveys of the Protein Data Bank revealed the occurrence of 18 675 nSS → π* C═O interactions associated with 15 320 disulfide bonds in 7105 protein structures. Further theoretical analyses characterize the bonding nature of the nSS → π* C═O interactions. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the stabilizing effect of the nSS → π* C═O interactions in small molecular complexes and biomacromolecules.

Formaldehyde (FA) as a common organic compound has been shown to cause placental dysfunction and fetal defects. The potential benefits of fish oil (FOil) in protecting placental structures are attributed to its antioxidant properties. This study aimed to explore the preventive role of FOil in mitigating the adverse effects of FA in pregnant rats. Thirty pregnant Wistar rats were randomly categorized into five groups of control, sham (Normal saline; Orally and intraperitoneally), FOil (0.5 ml/day; Orally), FA (5 mg/kg/bw; intraperitoneally), FA+FOil. The treatment period was from day 0-20 of pregnancy. On the 20th day of pregnancy, placental morphometric parameters were measured. The histological and histochemical analyses were performed using H&E and PAS staining, respectively. Also, the placenta tissue was analyzed for oxidative stress biomarkers, p-53 protein levels, and the expression of caspase-3 gene. The administration of FA led to a significant decrease in the weight, diameter, and thickness of the placenta, as well as a decrease in the thickness of the decidua layer, junctional and labyrinth zone, and the number of trophoblast giant cells in rat placentas. FA led to a significant increase in placental p-53 protein levels, caspase-3 expression, and oxidative stress biomarkers. Administration of FOil to pregnant rats treated with FA led to a significant decrease in morphometric and histological changes, oxidative stress, and the expression of genes associated with apoptosis. The findings suggest that the administration of FOil to FA-treated pregnant rats can protect placental histopathological changes by enhancing the activity of the antioxidant enzymes.
