BACKGROUND: home exercise booklets offer several benefits to individuals with shoulder pain. However, it is necessary to investigate the factors that determine adherence to home exercises. OBJECTIVES: 1) To investigate the level of adherence of individuals with chronic shoulder pain to a home exercise booklet conducted without the mediation of a healthcare professional, 2) To describe the barriers and facilitators to adherence, and 3) to determine if shoulder disability, self-efficacy, and treatment expectations are predictors of the level of adherence. DESIGN: prospective longitudinal study. METHODS: A total of 47 individuals with chronic shoulder pain were recruited. The Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) was used to assess pain intensity, the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) to measure shoulder disability, the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ-10) for self-efficacy, and a likert scale to measure treatment expectations. Adherence was measured by Exercise Adherence Assessment Scale (EAAE-Br). RESULTS: A total of 23 individuals (48.93%) adhered to the home exercise program. The most commonly cited barriers were pain and health-related issues, while the most cited facilitators were pain improvement and symptom relief. Barriers associated with adherence were time constraints and other commitments, while the facilitator associated with adherence was enjoying the exercises. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that shoulder disability, self-efficacy, and treatment expectations were unable to predict adherence to home exercises in individuals with shoulder pain [F (1,47) = 2.384; p = 0.130; R2 = 0.056]. CONCLUSION: The study revealed barriers and facilitators to home exercise in individuals with shoulder pain. Disability, self-efficacy, and treatment expectations were not able to predict adherence.

Background: Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood which accounts for numerous annual hospitalizations due to a lack of management and proper management of the disease. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of using an educational booklet with or without combination with motivational interviewing (MI) on the self-efficacy of parents/caregivers in the control and management of childhood asthma. Methods: A clinical trial was carried out with 86 parents/caregivers of children with asthma aged between 2 and 12 years who were followed up in primary health care units from March 2019 to December 2020. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one of the groups read the booklet and the other read the booklet combined with the MI. The Brazilian version of the Self-Efficacy and Their Child's Level of Asthma Control scale was applied before and 30 days after the intervention for assessment of self-efficacy. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 and R 3.6.3 software. P values<0.05 were considered significant. Results: There were 46 participants in the booklet group and 40 in the booklet and MI group. Both groups were effective in increasing total self-efficacy scores after the intervention (P<0.001). No statistically significant difference was found between the scores of the two groups (P=0.257). Conclusion: The educational booklet with or without combination with MI can increase the self-efficacy of parents/caregivers of children with asthma. The findings could be considered by healthcare providers for the empowerment of caregivers of children with asthma in the control and management of their children's asthma.Trial Registration Number: U1111-1254-7256.

OBJECTIVE: to construct and validate an educational booklet for self-care of patients in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery. METHODS: methodological study, including bibliographic survey, construction of the booklet and validation with judges and the target audience. For validation with judges, the Health Educational Content Validation Instrument was used, and with the target audience, an instrument was used with questions related to organization, writing style, appearance and motivation. To analyze the judges' answers, the content validation index was used. RESULTS: the booklet was prepared with 14 topics. The content validation index among the eight judges was 1 and the concordance index among the ten patients was above 80%. The final version of the material was made available in printed format. CONCLUSION: the educational booklet was developed and validated by judges and the target audience, serving as an educational support tool for self-care of patients in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is the fourth worldwide leading cause of disability and represents 22% of musculoskeletal disorders. Conservative intervention has been strongly recommended to treat chronic neck pain and Telerehabilitation is the alternative for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. There is a lack of high-quality research on the effects of telerehabilitation in patients with neck pain and functional disability. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effect of a telerehabilitation exercise program versus a digital booklet only with self-care information in individuals with non-specific chronic neck pain. METHODS: This is a prospectively registered, assessor-blinded, two-arm randomized controlled trial comparing a telerehabilitation exercise program versus a digital booklet with self-care information. Seventy patients will be recruited with non-specific chronic neck pain. Follow-ups will be conducted post-treatment, 6 weeks, and 3 months after randomization. The primary outcome will be disability at post-treatment (6 weeks) measured using neck pain disability. Secondary outcomes will be pain intensity levels, global perceived effect, self-efficacy, quality of life, kinesiophobia, and adherence to treatment. In our hypothesis, patients allocated to the intervention group experience outcomes that are similar to those of those assigned to the self-care digital booklet. Our hypothesis can then be approved or disapproved based on the results of the study. DISCUSSION: This randomized clinical trial will provide reliable information on the use of telerehabilitation to treat patients with chronic non-specific neck pain. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was prospectively registered at the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (number: RBR-10h7khvk). Registered on 16 September 2022.

This methodological study aimed to describe the elaboration and validation of a digital booklet focused on sustainable practices toward adolescent health-promoting actions. It was conducted according to the following stages: preparation of the educational booklet; appearance and content validation with 21 judges and validation with a target audience of 53 adolescents. The drafting, elaboration, and assembly of the material's layout were performed through data retrieved from the integrative review and interviews. The digital booklet was entitled "Uncomplicating Environmental Health", with 29 pages in the A5 half-page format (14.8 cm width and 21.0 cm height), configured in landscape layout mode, made available for free, and accessible via mobile and fixed devices. The booklet was validated regarding appearance and content, with an overall Content Validity Index of 0.95, and judges' validation through the Suitability Assessment of Materials tool was considered "superior". The booklet achieved the target audience's positive agreement for validation. It was considered valid to be used in health education for adolescents.
Objetivou-se descrever a elaboração e validação de cartilha digital voltada para práticas sustentáveis que favoreça ações promotoras de saúde para adolescentes. Estudo metodológico conduzido de acordo com as seguintes fases: elaboração da cartilha educativa; validação de aparência e conteúdo com 21 juízes e validação com público-alvo 53 adolescentes. Realizou-se a redação, elaboração e montagem do layout do material através dos dados obtidos da revisão integrativa e entrevistas. Intitulou-se a cartilha "Descomplicando a Saúde Ambiental", a qual possui 29 páginas no formato de páginas de meia folha A5 (14,8 de largura e 21,0 de altura), configuradas no formato paisagem. Com formatação digital, com acesso gratuito e acessível em dispositivos móveis e fixos. Validou-se a cartilha quanto à aparência e conteúdo, com o Índice de Validade de Conteúdo global de 0,95 e validação dos juízes pelo Suitability Assessment of Materials considerada "superior". Quanto à validação pelo público-alvo, obteve concordância positiva. A cartilha desenvolvida foi considerada válida para ser utilizada em educação em saúde para a população adolescente.

OBJECTIVES: to provide sources of content validity evidence for the Post-Stroke Guidance and Follow-up Booklet. METHODS: a quantitative-qualitative approach, using two Delphi method and content analysis rounds. The Educational Content Validation Instrument in Health was sent to 53 independent judges. A Content Validity Index above 0.90 was considered. RESULTS: of the 14 nurses who participated, 64.3% have experience with stroke care, 35.7% with primary care and 64.3% with educational material production. In content analysis, judges' suggestions were stratified into four categories: material conformation, objectivity, accuracy and perception. Spelling changes were made to the images, addition of functionality scale, adequacy of technical terms and language. The Content Validity Index in the second round showed a concordance of 0.97. CONCLUSIONS: the booklet presented satisfactory content validity sources of evidence.

OBJECTIVE: To construct and validate the content and appearance of an information booklet to promote self-efficacy of parents and/or caregivers in childhood asthma management and control. METHOD: This is a methodological study, developed from educational material elaboration, validity and assessment by 25 content judges and three technical judges. Language clarity, practical pertinence and theoretical relevance were used, calculating the Content Validity Coefficient (CVC) for validity, and the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) instrument was applied for assessment. Judges were also able to make suggestions for modifications on each page of the booklet. Pages that reached a CVC ≥ 0.80 for content judges and CVC ≥ 0.70 for technical judges were considered validated. RESULTS: The total CVC of the booklet was 0.96 for content judges and 0.83 for technical judges. The educational material was considered superior according to the SAM, with a total score of 92.67% for content judges and 73.81% for technical judges. Changes were made to the booklet after the validity process, according to judges' suggestions, resulting in a second version. CONCLUSION: The information booklet is valid and has a high degree of recommendation for use with parents and/or caregivers in childhood asthma control and management.

BACKGROUND: Patients' lack of knowledge about their own disease may function as a barrier to shared decision-making and well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of written educational materials on breast cancer patients. METHODS: This multicenter, parallel, unblinded, randomized trial included Latin American women aged ≥18 years with a recent breast cancer diagnosis yet to start systemic therapy. Participants underwent randomization in a 1:1 ratio to receive a customizable or standard educational brochure. The primary objective was accurate identification of molecular subtype. Secondary objectives included identification of clinical stage, treatment options, participation in decision-making, perceived quality of information received, and illness uncertainty. Follow-up occurred at 7-21 and 30-51 days post-randomization. CLINICALTRIALS: gov identifier: NCT05798312. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-five breast cancer patients with a median age of 53 years and 61 days from diagnosis were included (customizable: 82; standard: 83). At first available assessment, 52%, 48%, and 30% identified their molecular subtype, disease stage, and guideline-endorsed systemic treatment strategy, respectively. Accurate molecular subtype and stage identification were similar between groups. Per multivariate analysis, customizable brochure recipients were more likely to identify their guideline-recommended treatment modalities (OR: 4.20,p = 0.001). There were no differences between groups in the perceived quality of information received or illness uncertainty. Customizable brochure recipients reported increased participation in decision-making (p = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Over one third of recently diagnosed breast cancer patients are incognizant of their disease characteristics and treatment options. This study demonstrates a need to improve patient education and shows that customizable educational materials increase patients' understanding of recommended systemic therapies according to individual breast cancer characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the development of a virtual educational booklet for self-care promotion of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis during the COVID-19 pandemics. METHOD: This methodological study was conducted in three steps: bibliographic search, development of virtual educational booklet by 12 evaluators and ten representatives of the target audience. A questionnaire adapted from the literature was used to evaluate the educational booklet. The questionnaire consisted of seven items: scientific accuracy, content, language, illustrations, specificity and comprehension, readability, and quality of information. A minimum score of 0.75 in the content validity index (CVI) of each questionnaire item and minimum agreement of 75% among positive responses of postmenopausal women were required to validate the virtual booklet. RESULTS: Health professionals and representatives of the target audience suggested changes regarding layout, illustrations, and content of the virtual booklet. CVI of the final version was 0.84 between health professionals and agreement among the target audience was 90%. CONCLUSION: The virtual educational booklet with exercises and instructions for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis was valid and should be used by health professionals for advice on self-care and health promotion during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: to validate the content and appearance of a booklet to promote the health of people with diabetes mellitus in the face of COVID-19. METHODS: a methodological study, carried out in a virtual environment with experts who had practical and scientific experience in diabetes mellitus, from November 2021 to February 2022. Data were analyzed using the Content Validity Ratio. RESULTS: twenty-seven experts from different states of Brazil and with different academic backgrounds participated in the study. In content validity, reviews were suggested in items in relation to objectives and structure, in appearance validity, adjustments in layout were suggested. CONCLUSIONS: the results showed that the booklet achieved adequate content and appearance validity rates. Therefore, when adapting to experts' suggestions, it becomes an accurate tool.

OBJECTIVE: Printed materials have been used as educational resources to assist healthcare professionals in evidence-based clinical practice by providing guidelines for treatment, prevention, and self-care. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a booklet on the risk assessment, prevention, and treatment of incontinence-associated dermatitis. METHODS: This was a descriptive, analytic, and quantitative study. The booklet was developed in six steps: situational diagnosis, development of the research question, integrative review of the literature, synthesis of knowledge, structuring and design, and validation of the content. An expert panel composed of 27 experienced nurses carried out content validation using the Delphi technique. The content validity index (CVI) and Cronbach α coefficient were calculated. RESULTS: The mean Cronbach α for the evaluation questionnaire was .91, indicating excellent internal consistency. The evaluators classified the content of the booklet from "inadequate" to "totally adequate" (overall CVI, 0.91) in the first round of consultation and from "adequate" and "totally adequate" (overall CVI, 1.0) in a second round of consultation. The booklet was therefore considered validated. CONCLUSIONS: A booklet on risk assessment, prevention, and treatment of incontinence-associated dermatitis was created and validated by an expert panel, obtaining 100% consensus among the evaluators in the second round of consultation.

OBJECTIVE: to construct and validate an educational booklet on high dose rate gynecological brachytherapy (HDR) for women with gynecologic cancer. METHODS: a methodological study, with the construction and validity of a booklet based on the Doak, Doak and Root theoretical-methodological framework. Content and appearance validity was guided by the Delphi technique, by 11 judges, selected using Jasper's criteria. Afterwards, clinical validity was carried out with the target population. RESULTS: the booklet, built from evidence from an integrative review, validated with judges, obtained an overall CVI of 0.98. After clinical validity with 27 women, it presents 24 sheets with illustrations produced by a graphic designer, subdivided into topics: gynecological system anatomy and gynecological cancer epidemiology, gynecological brachytherapy definition, therapeutic steps, approach to side effects and management, and two pages for notes. CONCLUSIONS: the booklet has validity for use in HDR gynecological brachytherapy treatment.

OBJECTIVE: to produce and validate a booklet, based on Jean Watson's Theory, on home care for premature newborns, based on caregivers' experiences. METHOD: a methodological study, developed in the following stages: diagnosis of knowledge needs about home care; survey of scientific content; educational material production; and validity by judges/experts. RESULTS: the literature review resulted in 19 articles. The main themes (breastfeeding, bath care, bond building, infection prevention and support network) were listed for producing the booklet "Booklet for Premature Newborns: Demystifying Home Care". The booklet content and appearance received the overall Content Validity Index of 0.85, considered suitable within the scientific rigor of validity. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: the booklet produced and validated is an educational material whose main role is to provide knowledge and awaken caregivers' autonomy in providing home care to newborns.

OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of the booklet, compared to the usual service care, in the increase of the knowledge of pregnant/puerperal women living with HIV, for the prevention of HIV-VT. METHOD: Pilot study of a randomized controlled clinical trial, initially with 104 pregnant women living with HIV, with a final sample of 45 women. It was held in three public maternity hospitals in Fortaleza-CE, from January/2017 to May/2018. The control group received regular care from the service and the intervention group had access to the booklet as an additive. The research was carried out in three phases: baseline; evaluation 2, in prenatal care; and evaluation 3, in the postpartum period. RESULTS: There was no intergroup difference in the women's mean knowledge score (short-term p = 0.473; long-term p = 0.151). However, in the intragroup analysis, the booklet proved to be effective in improving the pregnant women's knowledge in the intervention group, in the short term (p = 0.002) and long term (p = 0.033). CONCLUSION: There was an improvement in knowledge within the intervention group over time, but there was no difference in women's knowledge in the intergroup analysis. Thus, based on this pilot, a broader study on the use of booklet is required to prove its effectiveness (ReBEC: UTN: U1111-1191-9954).

OBJECTIVE: To describe the development and validation process of a booklet with perioperative guidelines for surgical patients. METHOD: This is a methodological, quantitative study, divided into three stages: narrative review, booklet preparation and validation with 23 judges, nurses specialized in patient safety/perioperative nursing, who answered the online Educational Content Validation Instrument. The booklet was considered valid when each item obtained a Content Validity Index equal to or greater than 0.8. RESULTS: The elaborated material was divided into four items: surgical patient safety; preoperative guidelines; the surgical center; guidelines after surgery. The overall Content Validity Index in the validation with judges was 1.0, considered gold standard. CONCLUSION: The booklet was validated by experts regarding objectives, structure/presentation and relevance.

OBJECTIVES: to build and validate an educational booklet to promote the involvement of parents in labor and birth. METHODS: methodological study developed in five stages: situational diagnosis; bibliographic survey; construction of illustrations, layout, design and texts; content and appearance validation by judges (25 experts) and calculation of the Flesch Readability Index; and validation with the target audience (12 parents). A minimum Content Validity Index of 0.80 was considered. RESULTS: the booklet was entitled "Father Presence" and was developed in 11 topics. In Content and Appearance Validation, the Validity Index obtained an overall score of 0.97. Cronbach's alpha was 0.92, indicating excellent reliability of its content. A global score of 74% for readability was obtained, considered easy to understand. CONCLUSIONS: the material was successful in the validation process, and it can be recommended for parents to use it during the prenatal period, promoting the inclusion of the partner and preparing them for labor and birth.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) compromises the structures of the musculoskeletal system, especially in the foot-ankle complex. Foot-related exercises can be a promising tool to be incorporated in health care programs to manage and prevent musculoskeletal complications resulting from DM and DPN progression. OBJECTIVE: To present the development, validation, and usability evaluation of a booklet that directs training and personalizes the progression of a home-based program of foot-ankle exercises. METHODS: The booklet containing a foot-ankle exercise program developed in a previous clinical trial was validated using the Delphi technique, with a multi-professional jury of experts who assessed the content of the material, language, individual education, exercise execution, exercise quality, and material implementation. The validated version was evaluated through telephone interview by a convenience sample of 10 individuals with DPN regarding its relevance, health education, comprehension, and usability. RESULTS: The validation process with experts was performed in two rounds achieving 100% agreement in the second round. During the usability evaluation process the main complaint of users was that performing all the exercises was very tiring and took too much time out of their daily routine. Thus, the number of repetitions for each exercise was changed from 30 to 12. CONCLUSION: The booklet is a material for prevention and management of the impacts of DM and DPN progression by improving the musculoskeletal function of the foot-ankle. This material provides an exercise regime with a personalized progression based on the perceived effort of the users.

AIMS: This manuscript aimed to produce an illustrated booklet of Brazilian sign language (LIBRAS) booklet to facilitate the communication between dentists (and academics) and deaf patients during dental treatment and other healthcare promotion activities. METHODS AND RESULTS: A literature review was conducted to select signs, symptoms, and diseases related to dentistry expressed in LIBRAS; in addition, photographs were taken to illustrate and produce the booklet. The booklet (in PDF format) was made available on an open-access website and printed copies were freely distributed at the dental clinics of the Federal University of Pará. CONCLUSION: Learning of specific LIBRAS is extremely important to guarantee social inclusion and improve dental treatment of deaf patients.
