RESUMEN

Background: Uncontrolled blood loss is a primary source of preventable death after injury. Workplace injuries and fatalities are common, with most occurring in the agricultural/fishing/forestry/hunting or transportation/warehousing industries. Stop the Bleed (STB) training provides instruction on application of bleeding control methods to injured persons and is available to the general public. Method: We provided an overview of high-risk injury industries that could benefit from STB training. We also provided a review of the application of STB training and bleeding control methods in occupational settings with an emphasis on the role of the occupational health nurse. Findings: Suggested guidelines for occupational health nurses and employees in occupational settings who may respond to injured colleagues are provided. Implications for occupational health nurses are reviewed, including implementing STB training in the workplace and obtaining/storing bleeding control supplies. Resources for STB training, purchasing and storing bleeding control supplies, and general emergency response information are provided. Conclusions/application to practice: Occupational health nurses play a crucial role in emergency response in the workplace and have the ability to drive the implementation of STB training in their institution. Occupational health nurses often work in isolation or in small teams and serve as a primary resource for treatment of injured employees. Implementation of STB training for all employees is highly recommended given the limited availability of occupational health nurses in large or rural settings. Such training may reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with workplace injuries.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a training program for occupational health nurses (OHNs) regarding support for workers with cancer and their workplaces. METHODS: Based on our prior research, we engaged in multiple discussions on the development of training program for OHNs. For examining the effectiveness of the developed training program, we collected and analyzed the data from three repeated surveys conducted before, immediately after, and 3 months after the training on self-confidence levels of the participants regarding 23 items associated with support for workers with cancer and their workplaces. RESULTS: We made a 3-hour training program including a lecture and a group work. First, we gave a lecture explaining the support scheme consisting of 4 parts and the 12 hints in action phrase while using the guidebook. Second, we conducted the group work regarding the case of a female worker diagnosed with breast cancer. Of the participants who supported workers with cancer in actuality during the 3-month post-training, 86% acknowledged the utility of the training in implementing support. As for the pre-post evaluation of the training program, most items of the participants' self-confidence significantly increased from pretraining to immediately after and 3 months post-training. DISCUSSION: This study demonstrated that the developed training program was effective in that the participants learned the support schemes and skills and gained self-confidence in implementing supports in real-work settings. We hope that this training program will be extensively used in the future, enabling OHNs to contribute toward balancing cancer treatment and work.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the education systems for occupational health nursing (OHN) in the basic education course for public health nurses (PHNs) in Japanese nursing universities. METHODS: An anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among 234 nursing universities with PHN courses. We surveyed the outline of PHN/OHN curricula, clinical practicum in OHN, and the skill achievement levels of students in OHN clinical practicum according to the "Minimum Requirements in PHNs Education 2004" (MR2004) developed by the Japan Association of PHN Educational Institutions. The data were analyzed using a t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. All statistical analyses were carried out using IBM SPSS ver. 21.0. RESULTS: In the analysis, we used data from the 80 respondent schools (response rate 34.2%). In 39 schools (48.1%), lectures related to a clinical practicum in OHN were offered as independent subjects in the school curriculum; of these 39, two schools (2.5%) offered OHN as multiple independent subjects. In 49 schools (60.5%), clinical practicum in OHN was designated as a part of PHN training. In colleges that had a clinical practicum in OHN, the number of lecture hours related to OHN was 9.7 ± 11.6 hours, which was more than that in colleges without such a practicum, although the difference was not significant. We compared the skill achievement levels between the groups where the number of days in the OHN clinical practicum was up to two and up to three or more. There was a tendency for the skill achievement level to be higher in the group with the greater number of days, with a significant difference in 16 of 19 items. CONCLUSIONS: We clarified that the PHN curriculum is offered with many variations in colleges, and that the lectures and clinical practicum in OHN are developed according to each college's policy. We observed the following tendency: the more days in the OHN clinical practicum, the higher the student's skill achievement level. These findings suggest that guaranteeing a certain number of days in a clinical practicum in OHN is important for realizing high-quality PHN training.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Occupational Health Nurses have gradually changed their role. To provide a national and international overview concerning the Occupational Health Nurse's role and to evaluate which are the regulatory/professional elements currently in force in Italy that may permit to better structure and develop Occupational Health Nurse's technical/scientific knowledges. METHODS: Literature and regulatory texts review in Italy and abroad; on sight research in some public and private Occupational Health services. RESULTS: Occupational Health Nurses' role abroad is well established and it's primarily aimed to preventive health interventions and health promotions. In Italy, on the contrary, the role of nurses in Occupational Health is almost always accessory in the implementation of health surveillance and workers' health education. This fact seems to be the result of the absence of a specific training course for those professionals, that could better define their legal profile. CONCLUSIONS: We verified the need that the training curricula of the Nursing Degree and of the Post-graduate Degree in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences give more space for teaching specific Occupational Health skills. It seems useful to propose the activation of specific post-graduate training courses for nurses who wish to focus specifically their professional activity in our disciplinary field.

RESUMEN

Organizations are required to adhere to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) if they have workers that wear a respirator on the job. They must also have an employee "suitably trained" to administer their program. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and its National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory have worked to champion the occupational health nurse in this role by collaborating with the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses to develop free, online respiratory protection training and resources (RPP Webkit). This article describes the development, content, and success of this training. To date, 724 participants have completed the training, 32.6% of whom lead their organization's respiratory protection program, 15.3% who indicated they will lead a program in the near future, and 52% who did not lead a program, but indicated that the training was relevant to their work. The majority "strongly agreed" the training was applicable to their work and it enhanced their professional expertise.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the appropriateness and usefulness of the first aid training program developed for occupational health nurses (OHNs) to improve their basic skills of first aid treatment. METHODS: This was a case-control study. The subjects were 69 nurses who were stationed in workplaces in Japan (intervention group: n=35; waiting-list control group: n=34). The training program was developed using the method of instructional design (ID) and composed of basic life support (BLS) training, basic first aid training, and simulation training. This study was conducted from April to August 2012. The training was evaluated using the Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation: level 1 (reaction), level 2 (learning), level 3 (behavior), and level 4 (results; this level was omitted). For level 1, the training contents were evaluated on a visual analog scale (VAS) of 0 to 10 points on the basis of whether the programs' contents were interesting, understandable, and applicable in the workplace. For level 2, a knowledge test (15 true/false questions) was used. For level 3, the practical application of activities relating to the emergency system was evaluated. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the attributes and characteristics of the subjects of the workplaces between the intervention and the waiting-list control groups. The score for reaction (level 1) were 8.5-9.7 points. In the knowledge test (level 2), there was no significant difference in the score before training between the intervention (11.0 points) and the waiting-list control groups (11.1 points). However, the score three months later showed a significant difference between the intervention (12.5 points) and the waiting-list control groups (11.0 points). The score after training was significantly higher than the score before the training that the intervention group received. For evaluation of behavior (level 3) three months later, the ratios of implementation of management and review of necessary items, review of task, and discussion with OHNs on emergency systems were significantly high in the intervention group. CONCLUSIONS: The evaluation of the first aid training programs for OHNs in this study showed high satisfaction of the participants and indicated improved knowledge and contributions to the waiting-list control group. We consider the contents of the program as appropriate.

RESUMEN

Peru is a country located on the Pacific coast of South America with a population of more than 30 million inhabitants. In the past 10 years, Peru has had a steady economic growth. Peru is predominantly an extractive industry country, but the manufacturing and construction sectors are booming. It is in this context that regulations have been implemented to protect the safety and health of workers. One of the most important regulations is the Law on Safety and Health at Work, which has been recently promulgated. Regulations are complemented by training and education in occupational safety and health. The measures are yet to be fully implemented thus a positive effect in reducing accidents and occupational diseases at work has not yet been seen.

RESUMEN

Providers treating low back pain must be confident and knowledgeable in evidence-based practice (EBP) to provide the best outcomes. An online education course was created in an effort to increase knowledge and confidence in EBP and clinical practice guidelines specific to low back pain in an occupational setting. There were 80 participants who completed the pre-test and post-test. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in knowledge and confidence scores after completion of the course. An online education course was shown to be a cost-effective, accessible tool to increase knowledge and confidence of EBP for different health care providers.

RESUMEN

Social media is a buzzword frequently referred to in marketing materials, general media, and personal conversations. Although many refer to the term social media, some individuals do not understand its meaning or how it affects their daily lives at work and home. Since the expansion of the Internet to web 2.0, multiple platforms of communication occur virtually through various social media. Understanding and learning how to use these platforms are essential to stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues; advance connections to professional organizations; and extend educational opportunities. This article presents basic information for occupational health nurses to improve their understanding of social media and how to communicate virtually using different platforms safely and securely.

RESUMEN

Occupational health nursing focuses on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury, protection from work-related and environmental hazards, and corporate profitability. Quality education about the relationship between work and health is critical for nurses' success regardless of work setting, and is consistent with Healthy People 2020 goals, but is lacking or limited in some programs. This report introduces an innovative occupational health nursing curriculum for students enrolled in baccalaureate nursing programs. The process of designing and pilot testing this novel curriculum, its alignment with nursing competencies, and its format and learning activities are described. Preparing professional nurses to understand the role of the occupational health nurse and the relationship between work and health is an essential curricular consideration for contemporary nursing education.

RESUMEN

This article describes how hybrid online and classroom learning approaches were used to design and offer an occupational health nursing review course throughout a multi-state region of the northwest United States. In response to demand from practicing occupational health nurses for board certification preparation, a series of asynchronous and synchronous continuing education modules was created covering a range of occupational health nursing topics. This review course illustrates how innovative educational delivery models can serve the needs of occupational health nurses challenged by geographic and time constraints.

RESUMEN

This article is the first about occupational health nursing in Hungary. The authors describe the Hungarian health care and occupational health care systems, including nursing education and professional organizations for occupational health nurses. The Fundamental Law of Hungary guarantees the right of every employee to healthy and safe working conditions, daily and weekly rest times and annual paid leave, and physical and mental health. Hungary promotes the exercise of these rights by managing industrial safety and health care, providing access to healthy food, supporting sports and regular physical exercise, and ensuring environmental protection. According to the law, the responsibility for regulation of the occupational health service lies with the Ministry of Human Resources. Safety regulations are under the aegis of the Ministry of National Economy.

RESUMEN

Occupational health nurses have diverse backgrounds and their practices require the ability to perform unique professional tasks. This study empirically evaluated their activities and skills using a web-based log system to describe activities at 15 specific sampled times. A national sample of 128 occupational health nurses provided 1,893 activity logs revealing occupational health nurses use both clinical and management skills on a regular basis; indirect client care is as common as direct "hands-on" client care. Most occupational health nurses are directly paid by their employer and activities serve to benefit both individual workers and their employers. Occupational health nurses have specific knowledge and skills in addition to general nursing competencies. Understanding the actual work of occupational health nurses is necessary to align training, certification, and competency maintenance systems such as continuing education with the unique skills used in actual practice activities.

RESUMEN

The steady evolution of domestic industries and the continued expansion of the workforce have outdated Taiwan's traditional model of occupational health nursing, which focuses on preventing work-related diseases and ensuring workplace safety. Professional-competency evaluations, now widely used within the medical and other professional communities to confirm that individuals have mastered relevant knowledge and skills, are a fixture in service quality management and related strategies. Occupational health nurses have a critical role in promoting and ensuring the quality of occupational-health related services. A multifaceted strategy is needed to update the domestic model of occupational health nursing. This strategy should include: 1) Set professional standards and create standard teaching materials for national occupational health nurses; 2) Enhance the professional efficacy of nurses in this field; 3) Survey the relevant role functions and education/training needs of occupational health nurses; 4) Develop relevant elective courses; and 5) Format courses/curricula for e-learning and for multimedia platforms. Furthermore, after implementation of this strategy, the model should be evaluated in terms of the knowledge and skills acquired by occupational health nurses. It is hoped that by reflecting local needs and experiences this new model will update the field of occupational health nursing to meet the needs of the current and future workplace in Taiwan and increase nursing knowledge and skills in order to foster and sustain healthy workplace environments.
