RESUMEN

A 7-year-old crossbreed dog presented for lameness with diffuse soft tissue swelling in the right fore limb. Radiographs identified increased opacity of medullary cavity involving the radius and ulna. Whole-body computed tomography (CT) revealed mineral attenuation in the medullary cavity of multiple bones. Histopathology of the right distal tibia showed a fibrocartilaginous matrix occupying intertrabecular spaces. The final diagnosis was enchondromatosis. Long-term favorable progression of the dog's clinical condition further supported the benign histopathologic classification. This is the fifth case of canine enchondromatosis reported so far and the first documentation of further characterization with CT.

RESUMEN

Data is presented of the post-mortem macroscopic and microscopic examination of two Toy Poodles with multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier syndrome). In both animals opening and maturation disorders of the growth plates were found in several skeletal locations. Due to the dogs' age difference at necropsy (14 and 4 months), some variation was also present in occurrence and appearance of primary and secondary alterations, which gave rise to some conclusions regarding development and progression of the disease. Chondrodysplasia, a characteristic of several breeds, is considered to be the essential factor in the pathogenesis of multiple enchondromatosis in the described cases.

RESUMEN

The clinical and radiological findings of three related Miniature Poodles with multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease) are presented. Persisting, in part ossified growth plate cartilage foci were found bilaterally in the humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia and fibula of each dog and in one dog in some metacarpal and metatarsal bones. The ribs and many vertebral bodies were also affected. There was evidently no bone formation in the sternebrae. All three dogs first attracted attention at the ages of four to six months, with spontaneous bilateral femoral neck fractures. The mode of inheritance of the condition is not yet clear, but based on the known pedigree data a dominant effect appears unlikely.

RESUMEN

The incidence and severity of tibial dyschondroplasia in broiler chickens were increased by feeding rations containing high levels of phosphorus relative to the level of calcium. Tibial dyschondroplasia was not eliminated by feeding a ration containing 1.5% calcium and 0.5% available phosphorus. Before typical dyschondroplasia developed, chickens fed a high level of phosphorus had uniformly thickened growth plates at 2 weeks of age. The majority of this thickening was due to an increase in the zone of proliferation, identical to that which occurs in calcium-deficiency rickets.

RESUMEN

After the general description of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) an account is given on observations of the incidence of this leg abnormality in the Danish broiler production. Comparative investigations concerning the frequency of TD in three commercial strains of broiler chickens (A, B & C) is described. The possible effect of the diet, with reference to frequency--particularly calcium and phosphorus levels--is studied. Chickens from each strain were divided into two equal groups; one was fed an ordinary broiler chicken diet (X), and the other was given feed (Y) originally composed for replacement pullets. The frequency of TD was 22 percent in broiler chickens from the commercial production. Irrespective of composition of the feed, almost the same incidence was recorded in both groups of one of the strains (A), while the frequency of TD in strains B & C was significantly lower on both diets. In relation to available observations and results, influence on incidence of genetic factors and certain feed ingredients is discussed. It is concluded that the TD-frequency is relatively high in the strain which dominates the Danish broiler production. This seems to be primarily determined by genetic factors, whereas in this experiment the levels of calcium, phosphorous and other feed ingredients have minor influence.
