ABSTRACT Introduction: The use of substances to enhance sports performance among professional and amateur athletes is increasing. Such substances may either be included in the group of dietary supplements or fall into pharmacological classes. Every substance used for this purpose is called an ergogenic agent. The number of ergogenic options available increases every day, favoring overuse and use without proper guidance. Among the dietary supplements, we highlight the use of creatine, a substance widespread in sports. Among the pharmacological groups, many drugs are used. Recently the use of sildenafil citrate by professional athletes from various predominantly aerobic sports modalities was reported in the media. Objective: To compare and demonstrate the responses caused by physical training associated with the use of creatine and sildenafil citrate in mice. Methods: A swim training protocol was applied and then an electrophysiograph was used in order to obtain parameters related to contraction intensity, the area under the curve and the percentage drop. Results: The responses obtained demonstrated the ergogenic action of creatine because it altered the parameters used for measurement. The use of sildenafil citrate did not yield satisfactory results to frame the drug as an ergogenic agent. Conclusion: Creatine has an ergogenic effect, reducing the percentage drop after 10 seconds, while sildenafil demonstrated no ergogenic potential and, interestingly, resulted in weaker responses when compared to the exercise groups. RESUMEN Introducción: El uso de sustancias con el objetivo de aumentar el rendimiento deportivo entre atletas profesionales y amateurs es creciente. Tales sustancias pueden formar parte del grupo de suplementos alimentarios o integrar clases farmacológicas. Toda sustancia empleada para ese fin es denominada agente ergogénico. El número de opciones entre los agentes ergogénicos aumenta cada día, favoreciendo así su uso excesivo y sin la debida orientación. Entre los suplementos alimentarios, se destaca el uso de creatina, sustancia muy difundida en el medio deportivo. Ya entre los grupos farmacológicos, muchas sustancias son usadas. Recientemente, fue divulgado entre los medios de comunicación el uso de citrato de sildenafil por atletas profesionales, de varias modalidades deportivas, predominantemente las aeróbicas. Objetivos: Comparar y demostrar las respuestas ocasionadas por el entrenamiento físico, asociadas al uso de creatina y citrato de sildenafil en ratones. Métodos: Se aplicó un protocolo de entrenamiento de natación y, a continuación, se usó un electrofisiógrafo con el objetivo de obtener parámetros referentes a la intensidad de contracción, al área bajo la curva y a la caída porcentual. Resultados: Las respuestas obtenidas demuestran acción ergogénica de la creatina, visto que alteraron los parámetros empleados para la medición. Ya el uso de citrato de sildenafil no presentó resultados satisfactorios para encuadrar al fármaco como agente ergogénico. Conclusión: La creatina presenta efecto ergogénico porque reduce la caída porcentual después de 10 segundos, mientras que el sildenafil no presentó potencial ergogénico y, curiosamente, demostró respuestas inferiores cuando comparado a los grupos de ejercicio. Tais substâncias podem fazer parte do grupo de suplementos alimentares ou integrar classes farmacológicas. Toda substância empregada para esse fim é denominada de agente ergogênico. O número de opções entre os agentes ergogênicos aumenta a cada dia, favorecendo assim o uso em demasia e sem a devida orientação. Entre os suplementos alimentares, salientamos a utilização de creatina, substância muito difundida no meio esportivo. Já entre os grupos farmacológicos, muitas substâncias são utilizadas. Recentemente, foi divulgado entre os meios de comunicação o uso de citrato de sildenafila por atletas profissionais de várias modalidades esportivas, predominantemente as aeróbicas. Objetivos: Comparar e demonstrar as repostas ocasionadas pelo treinamento físico, associadas ao uso de creatina e citrato de sildenafila em camundongos. Métodos: Aplicou-se um protocolo de treinamento de natação e, a seguir, empregou-se um eletrofisiógrafo com objetivo de obter parâmetros referentes à intensidade de contração, à área sob a curva e à queda percentual. Resultados: As respostas obtidas demonstram ação ergogênica da creatina, visto que alteraram os parâmetros empregados para a mensuração. Já a utilização de citrato de sildenafila não apresentou resultados satisfatórios para enquadrar o fármaco como agente ergogênico. Conclusão: A creatina apresenta efeito ergogênico porque reduz a queda percentual após 10 segundos, já a sildenafila não apresentou potencial ergogênico e, curiosamente, demonstrou respostas inferiores quando comparado aos grupos de exercício. In this paper, an alternative strategy for the design of a bidirectional inductive power transfer (IPT) module, intended for the continuous monitoring of cardiac pressure, is presented. This new integrated implantable medical device (IMD) was designed including a precise ventricular pressure sensor, where the available implanting room is restricted to a 1.8 × 1.8 cm2 area. This work considers a robust magnetic coupling between an external reading coil and the implantable module: a three-dimensional inductor and a touch mode capacitive pressure sensor (TMCPS) set. In this approach, the coupling modules were modelled as RCL circuits tuned at a 13.56 MHz frequency. The analytical design was validated by means of Comsol Multiphysics, CoventorWare, and ANSYS HFSS software tools. A power transmission efficiency (PTE) of 94% was achieved through a 3.5 cm-thick biological tissue, based on high magnitudes for the inductance (L) and quality factor (Q) components. A specific absorption rate (SAR) of less than 1.6 W/Kg was attained, which suggests that this IPT system can be implemented in a safe way, according to IEEE C95.1 safety guidelines. The set of inductor and capacitor integrated arrays were designed over a very thin polyimide film, where the 3D coil was 18 mm in diameter and approximately 50% reduced in size, considering any conventional counterpart. Finally, this new approach for the IMD was under development using low-cost thin film manufacturing technologies for flexible electronics. Meanwhile, as an alternative test, this novel system was fabricated using a discrete printed circuit board (PCB) approach, where preliminary electromagnetic characterization demonstrates the viability of this bidirectional IPT design.

PURPOSE: Since the Brazilian current legislation permits the reuse of single-use devices under a validated processing protocol, the main purpose of our study was to develop and validate a method for reusing non-irrigated electrophysiology catheter (EC). METHODS: Manual and mechanical processing by ultrasonic washer was associated with the use of enzymatic solution and hydrogen peroxide with a final rinse with filtered water. Validation of the cleaning process, as well as catheter integrity, was done by observing the ECs in stereoscopic microscope at ×60 magnification, followed by HemoCheck-S® (HCS) test to monitor the presence of residual blood on their surfaces. Ethylene oxide (EO) was used for sterilization, and the final validations of the processing were performed by assays of sterility, pyrogenicity, and EO residuals. Lastly, a cost-minimization study was performed. RESULTS: Cleaning process demonstrated absence of organic material detectable by HCS at the surfaces of the ECs. Assays for sterility were negative, and assays of EO residuals and endotoxins showed levels under established standards. The number of reuses was settled to a maximum of seven uses for the ECs with handle and ten uses for ECS without handle. The cost-minimization study showed an 84% savings, when considering seven reuses. CONCLUSIONS: Processing of ECs was validated at all stages. Therefore, reuse of ECs under the conditions that we designed was considered safe for patients and cost-effective for our institution.

Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for almost one third of all global deaths yearly, and therefore are largely studied. Cardiomyocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC-CM) have emerged as an exciting technology for cardiac disease modelling and personalised therapy. Nevertheless, issues concerning functional and molecular maturation are still faced. In addition to this, differentiation protocols generally yield a heterogeneous mixed population comprised of nodal, atrial and ventricular-like subtypes, being unsuitable for therapeutic purposes. Bradykinin (BK) is a vasoactive peptide which exerts important physiological roles in the cardiovascular system, having been previously described as important for cellular, keratinocyte and skeletal muscle differentiation. This project performed in cooperation with PluriCell Biotech, a startup specialized in the production and differentiation of hiPSC-CM, has sought (1) characterizing gene and protein expression of molecular markers of maturation and of subtype specification throughout of differentiation; (2) Assessing the electrical functionality of hiPSC-CM through the characterization of subtype-specific action potentials (APs) and (3) Investigating whether the progress of hiPSCCM maturation is regulated by BK through kinin-B2 receptors (B2R). Our results have validated the model that proposes a developmental-dependent switch between skeletal (ssTnI) and cardiac (cTnI) isoforms of troponin I as differentiation progresses, at least to some extent. Furthermore, prolonged time in culture has resulted in higher levels of expression of the ventricular marker MLC2v and in increased rates of ventricular-like action APs. Electrophysiological analysis of hiPSC-CM reveals a mixed population with AP morphologies correspondent to nodal, atrial and ventricular subtypes, all showing pronounced automaticity as well as other features of immature cardiomyocytes, such as low amplitude and depolarization velocity. Such findings are coherent with those from other groups who have attempted to differentiate mature native-like cardiac cells from pluripotent stem cells sources, without fully succeeding. After showing that differentiating hiPSC-CM express a functional and responsive B2R, the receptor was subjected to chronic activation with 10µM BK and 1µM BK or inhibition with 5µM Firazyr+BK. Even though B2R modulation has not interfered negatively with differentiation yields nor cell morphology, analysis of gene andprotein expression of ssTnI or cTnI and of the ventricular marker MLC2v, have revealed no significant results in comparison to untreated controls. This suggests that BK does not interfere on hiPSC-CM maturation nor subtype specification, although we cannot rule out that it could be leading to other unexplored effects. We recommend a closer look into which intracellular signalling pathways become active upon B2R stimulation in hiPSC-CM, in order to narrow down cellular processes for further investigation
Doenças cardiovasculares são responsáveis por quase um terço de todas as mortes globais anualmente, e por isto o sistema cardiovascular é amplamente estudado. Cardiomiócitos derivados a partir de células-tronco pluripotentes induzidas humanas (hiPSCCM) emergiram como uma promissora tecnologia para modelagem de doenças cardíacas e terapia personalizada. No entanto, desafios acerca de sua maturação funcional e molecular ainda são enfrentados. Além disso, protocolos de diferenciação geralmente levam à obtenção de populações heterogêneas contendo células com fenótipos similares aos de cardiomiócitos nodais, atriais e ventriculares sendo, portanto, inapropriadas para fins terapêuticos. A bradicinina (BK) é um peptídio vasoativo que exerce importantes papeis fisiológicos no sistema cardiovascular, além de ter sido previamente descrita como importante para a diferenciação neuronal, de queratinócitos e de músculo esquelético. Este projeto foi realizado em colaboração com a empresa PluriCell Biotech, uma startup especializada na produção e diferenciação de hiPSC-CM, e buscou (1) caracterizar a expressão gênica e proteíca de marcadores moleculares de maturação e de especificação de subtipos cardíacos durante a diferenciação; (2) avaliar a funcionalidade elétrica de hiPSC-CM por meio da caracterização de seus potenciais de ação (PAs) e (3) Investigar se o progresso da diferenciação de hiPSCCM é regulado por bradicinina por meio do receptor B2 (B2R). Nossos resultados validaram o modelo que propõe um switch na expressão das isoformas funcionais de troponina I esquelética (ssTnI) e cardíaca (cTnI), durante o desenvolvimento e diferenciação celular, pelo menos parcialmente. Além disso, tempo prolongado em cultura resultou em maiores níveis de expressão do marcador ventricular MLC2v, assim como maiores frequências de PAs com morfologias similares a de cardiomiócitos ventriculares. Análise eletrofisiológica de hiPSCCM revelam a existência de uma população mista contendo PAs correspondentes aos subtipos nodais, atriais e ventriculares, assim como pronunciada automaticidade e outros atributos típicos de cardiomiócitos imaturos, como baixa amplitude e devagar velocidade de despolarização. Estes resultados são coerentes com os de outros grupos que ainda não foram totalmente bem-sucedidos em diferenciar células cardíacas maduras similares acardiomiócitos nativos a partir de células-troncos pluripotentes. Após mostrar que as hiPSCCM expressam receptores B2 funcionais e responsivos, submetemos o receptor a uma ativação crônica com BK 10µM e BK 1µM ou inibição crônica com Firazyr 5µM + BK. Apesar da modulação do B2R não ter interferido de forma negativa no rendimento da diferenciação ou na morfologia celular, análise de expressão gênica e proteica de ssTnI e cTnI e do marcador ventricular MLC2v não revelou resultados significativos em comparação aos controles não-tratados. Isto sugere que a BK não interfere na maturação e especificação de subtipos cardíacos em hiPSC-CM, apesar de não podermos ignorar o fato de que ela poderia estar desencadeando outros efeitos inexplorados. Nós recomendamos um estudo mais aprofundado acerca de quais vias de sinalização se tornam ativas após estimulação do receptor B2 em hiPSC-CM, com o objetivo de afunilar quais processos celulares poderiam ser investigados em uma próxima etapa deste estudo

PURPOSE: To analyze the latency and amplitude of P300 responses obtained with electrodes positioned at Cz and Fz and in different tasks of infrequent stimulus identification in normal hearing individuals. METHODS: Forty adults of both genders participated in the study. Three recordings with three different tasks were obtained for the identification of the infrequent stimulus; simultaneous recordings were obtained from Cz and Fz positions. RESULTS: Cz position showed significantly greater amplitudes and lower latencies than Fz. Regarding the three tasks, only "pronouncing the word 'thin'" was different from "raising a finger", with lowest latencies for the verbal task. Regarding amplitude, significantly higher values were observed for "raising a finger", followed by "pronouncing the word 'thin'" and mental counting. CONCLUSION: Cz obtained the best values, highest amplitude and lowest latency. Lowest latencies were obtained for the task of "pronouncing the word 'thin'" and the highest amplitudes were obtained for "raising a finger".

Measurement of neurotransmitters during normal or altered function in cerebral slices could be an important tool to better understand the relationship between biochemical changes and electrophysiological activity. Some attempts of this analysis have been made; however, the current techniques do not have the appropriate time resolution to establish this relationship. The use of electrochemical biosensors has allowed for good time resolution, but problems related to the reduction of signal noise and biofouling of the electrode surface could be an important issue. In this work, we propose a new alternative to simultaneously measure glutamate and electrical activity with a high temporal resolution in brain slices. This approach is based on the use of enzymatic reactors that generate a fluorescent derivative from glutamate that can be measured at high temporal resolution. The results presented here show a reliable measurement of this neurotransmitter in brain slices obtained from intact animals under the effect of a glutamate transporter blocker DL-threo-beta-benzyloxyaspartate as well as the potassium channel blocker 4-aminopyridine. Differences in the levels of glutamate and high frequency and amplitude discharges as an effect of drug administration were found in brain slices obtained from epileptic rats (p<0.05). In conclusion, this method could be used to measure neurotransmitter concentration online at a near physiological temporal resolution, which can then be correlated to the electrical activity that is simultaneously recorded.

The electrical response of plants to environmental stimuli can be measured and quantitatively related to the intensity of several stimulating sources, like temperature, solar radiation, soil water content, evapotranspiration rates, sap flow and dendrometric cycles. These relations can be used to assess the influence of different environmental situations on soil water availability to plants, defined as a steady state condition between leaf transpirative flow and soil water flow to plant roots. A restricted soil water flow due to soil dryness can trigger water stress in plants, if the atmospheric evaporative demand is high, causing partial stomata closure as a physiological response to avoid plant dehydration; water stressed and unstressed plants manifest a differential electrical response. Real time plant electrical response measurements can anticipate actions that prevent the plant reaching actual stress conditions, optimizing stomata gas exchange and photosynthetic rates. An electrophysiological sensor developed in this work, allows remote real-time recording information on plant electrical potential (EP) in the field, which is highly related to EP measurements obtained with a laboratory Keithley voltmeter sensor used in an highly controlled experimental setup. Our electrophysiological sensor is a wireless, autonomous devise, which transmits EP information via Internet to a data server. Using both types of sensors (EP electrodes with a Keithley voltmeter and the electrophysiological sensor), we measured in real time the electrical responses of Persea americana and Prunus domestica plants, to induced water deficits. The differential response for 2 scenarios: irrigation and water restriction is identified by a progressive change in slope on the daily maximal and minimal electric signal values in stressed plants, and a zero-slope for similar signals for well-watered plants. Results show a correspondence between measured signals obtained by our electrophysiological sensor and the EP electrodes connected to the Keithley voltmeter in each irrigation stage. Also, both sensors show a daily cyclical signal (circadian cycle).

Pyramidal cells of CA3 area receive glutamatergic signals from the mossy fibers (MFs), perforant path and collaterals of other pyramidal cells, as well as GABAergic inputs from interneurons. In hippocampal slices, an extracellular stimulation electrode is often used to activate the MFs, with the disadvantage of possibly activating fibers other than MFs. We set-up a preparation that allows the analysis of the glutamatergic input from identified, giant MF boutons as well as of GABAergic inputs from boutons of interneurons on single CA3 pyramidal cells. Mossy fiber boutons were labeled by exposing hippocampal slices to a zinc-reactive fluorescent dye, or by injecting a fluorescent dye in the granule cell layer and allowing its transport along the MFs to their terminals in CA3 area. After conducting an enzyme-free, mechanical dissociation of CA3 area, we obtained pyramidal cells containing fluorescent, giant MF boutons attached to their apical dendrites, as well as boutons of interneuronal origin. Whole cell recordings were then performed, whereby synaptic responses could be evoked by selective stimulation of the identified boutons. The synaptic currents evoked by stimulation of MF boutons, unlike those evoked by stimulation of interneuronal boutons, underwent strong frequency potentiation and were depressed by activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors, which are characteristics of transmission of MF origin. Combination of fluorophores can be used to label different tracts/boutons allowing the study of the different characteristics of neurotransmitter release from a variety of sources on single target cells.

UNLABELLED: The P300 is and auditory Evoked Potential, called endogenous potential because it reflects the functional use the individual makes of the auditory stimulus, being highly dependent on cognitive skills; among them we list attention and auditory discrimination. It is a procedure of objective evaluation; however, one that depends on the examiner's experience to detect wave peaks, and it is important to use recording methods that facilitate the response presence analysis and result interpretation. AIM: To analyze the P300 Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potential obtained through the use of two active electrodes positioned on Fz and Cz. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 330 individuals from both genders and age ranging between 7 and 34 years participated in this study, they all had normal hearing and did not have any risk factor for mental problems. RESULTS: Results show that there was no statistically significant difference for N2 and P3 latency and P3 amplitude as far as gender is concerned, nor correlation with the individual's age. There was a strong correlation of these measures with Fz and Cz electrode positioning. CONCLUSION: Fz and Cz active electrodes positioning can be considered one more resource to help in the P300 clinical analysis.

Rats sweep their vibrissae in a rhythmic and coordinated fashion in order to acquire tactile information from their environment. Measuring vibrissae movement has become a matter of increased attention, from several labs, over the last few years. We describe the design and construction of an inexpensive photoresistive sensor that registers horizontal vibrissae movement. The device consists of an LED array and a light-dependent resistor (LDR) covered by a coating with varying transparency along its axis. When a vibrissa is located in the sensor, it generates a shadowy line over the photosensitive material, thus changing the LDR resistance. These changes are transduced into voltage changes. Our measurements on vibrissa show that this simple and inexpensive sensor effectively monitors the movement of a single vibrissa.

This article describes the design and preliminary evaluation of a small-sized and low energy consumption wearable wireless telemetry system for the recording of extracellular neuronal activity, with the possibility of selecting one of four channels. The system comprises four radio frequency (RF) transceivers, three microcontrollers, and a digital amplifier and filter. This constitutes an innovative distributed processing approach. Gain, cutoff frequencies, and channel selection are remotely adjusted. Digital data transmission is used for both the bioelectrical signals and the control commands. This feature offers superior immunity to external RF interference. Real-time viewing of the acquired data allows the researcher to select only relevant data for storage. Simultaneous recordings of neuronal activity from the striatum of a freely moving rat, both with the wireless device and with a wired data acquisition system, are shown.

O P300 é um Potencial Evocado Auditivo denominado potencial endógeno por refletir o uso funcional que o indivíduo faz do estímulo auditivo, sendo altamente dependente das habilidades cognitivas, entre elas atenção e discriminação auditiva. É um procedimento de avaliação objetiva, mas que depende da experiência do avaliador em detectar os picos das ondas, sendo importante a utilização de métodos de registro que facilitem a análise da presença de resposta e a interpretação dos resultados. OBJETIVO: Analisar o Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Longa Latência-P300 obtido com a utilização de dois eletrodos ativos posicionados em Fz e Cz. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Participaram deste estudo 33 indivíduos de ambos os gêneros com idade entre 7 e 34 anos, audição normal e sem fator de risco para problemas mentais. RESULTADOS: Os resultados demonstraram que não houve diferença estatisticamente significante para a latência de N2 e P3 e amplitude do P3 quando analisado o gênero e nem correlação com a idade dos indivíduos. Houve forte correlação destas medidas com o posicionamento dos eletrodos em Fz e Cz. CONCLUSÃO: O posicionamento dos eletrodos ativos em Fz e Cz pode ser considerado um recurso a mais para auxiliar na análise clínica do P300.
The P300 is and auditory Evoked Potential, called endogenous potential because it reflects the functional use the individual makes of the auditory stimulus, being highly dependent on cognitive skills; among them we list attention and auditory discrimination. It is a procedure of objective evaluation; however, one that depends on the examiner's experience to detect wave peaks, and it is important to use recording methods that facilitate the response presence analysis and result interpretation. AIM: to analyze the P300 Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potential obtained through the use of two active electrodes positioned on Fz and Cz. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 330 individuals from both genders and age ranging between 7 and 34 years participated in this study, they all had normal hearing and did not have any risk factor for mental problems. RESULTS: Results show that there was no statistically significant difference for N2 and P3 latency and P3 amplitude as far as gender is concerned, nor correlation with the individual's age. There was a strong correlation of these measures with Fz and Cz electrode positioning. CONCLUSION: Fz and Cz active electrodes positioning can be considered one more resource to help in the P300 clinical analysis.

We explore the hypothesis that induction of holistic or analytic strategies influences comprehension and processing of highly contextualized expressions of ordinary language, such as irony. Twenty undergraduate students were asked to categorize as coherent or incoherent a group of sentences. Each sentence completed a previous story, so that they could be ironical, literal or nonsensical endings. Participants were asked to evaluate whether each sentence was coherent or incoherent. Half of them were initially instructed to consider whether the sentences made sense (holistic condition); the other half were instructed to consider whether the sentences were congruent or incongruent (analytic condition). Behavioral responses and Event Related Potentials were registered during the experiment. Both behavioral and electrophysiological results allow clearly distinguishing between the holistic and the analytic strategies. The fact that the same set of stimuli elicits different ERP waveforms, depending on the strategy with which they are analyzed, suggests that different cognitive processes and different areas of the brain are operating in each case.

Local field potentials (LFP) are bioelectric signals recorded from the brain that reflect neural activity in a high temporal resolution. Separating background activity from that evoked by specific somato-sensory input is a matter of great clinical relevance in neurology. The coherence function is a spectral coefficient that can be used as a detector of periodic responses in noisy environments. Auditory steady-state responses to amplitude-modulated tones generate periodic responses in neural networks that may be accessed by means of coherence between the stimulation signal and the LFP recorded from the auditory pathway. Such signal processing methodology was applied in this work to evaluate in vivo, anaesthetized Wistar rats, activation of neural networks due to single carrier sound stimulation frequencies, as well as to evaluate the effect of different modulating tones in the evoked responses. Our results show that an inappropriate choice of sound stimuli modulating frequencies can compromise coherence analysis, e.g. misleading conclusions due to mathematical artefact of signal processing. Two modulating frequency correction protocols were used: nearest integer and nearest prime number. The nearest prime number correction was successful in avoiding spectral leakage in the coherence analysis of steady-state auditory response, as predicted by Monte Carlo simulations.

Fully differential amplifiers yield large differential gains and also high common mode rejection ratio (CMRR), provided they do not include any unmatched grounded component. In biopotential measurements, however, the admissible gain of amplification stages located before dc suppression is usually limited by electrode offset voltage, which can saturate amplifier outputs. The standard solution is to first convert the differential input voltage to a single-ended voltage and then implement any other required functions, such as dc suppression and dc level restoring. This approach, however, yields a limited CMRR and may result in a relatively large equivalent input noise. This paper describes a novel fully differential biopotential amplifier based on a fully differential dc-suppression circuit that does not rely on any matched passive components, yet provides large CMRR and fast recovery from dc level transients. The proposed solution is particularly convenient for low supply voltage systems. An example implementation, based on standard low-power op amps and a single 5-V power supply, accepts input offset voltages up to +/-500 mV, yields a CMRR of 102 dB at 50 Hz, and provides, in accordance with the AAMI EC38 standard, a reset behavior for recovering from overloads or artifacts.

We studied 516 globus pallidus neurons in dystonic patients. The firing rate was analysed. We classified the burst activity into tonic, burst, and pause patterns. Mean +/- SD firing rates and tonicity score for internal globus pallidus (GPi) and external globus pallidus (GPe) were 54.6 +/- 28.6; 58.01 +/- 39.1 and 1.18 +/- 0.55; 0.95 +/- 0.43, respectively. Differences in percentage appearance of tonic, burst, or paused neurons were not statistically significant for GPi versus GPe. GPi firing features in dystonic patients were closely similar to those of GPe. This could suggest that the abnormally patterned output from GPi would not result from increased differential inhibitory/excitatory input arising from the direct/indirect pathway but rather be transmitted from GPe, striatum, or either centromedian nucleus.

Most of the physiological studies of the pigeon retino-tectal visual pathway have investigated the accessible tectum, a small dorso-lateral tectal section that can be easily accessed by a simple craniotomy. However, at present we lack a detailed study of the topographical arrangement between the visual field, the retina and the accessible tectum. In particular, it is not known which section of the visual field is mapped onto the accessible tectum, and which of the specialized retinal areas mediates this projection. Here we determined, using local field potential (LFP) recordings and reverse retinoscopy, the shape, size and position in the visual space of the portion of the visual field mapped onto the accessible tectum (called here the accessible visual field, or AVF). Using this data and the mapping of Nalbach et al. [Vis. Res. 30 (4) (1990) 529], the retinal area corresponding to the AVF was determined. Such retinal area was also directly delimited by means of retrograde transport of DiI. The results indicate that the AVF is a triangular perifoveal zone encompassing only 15% of total visual field. The retinal region corresponding to the AVF has the shape of an elongated triangle that runs parallel to the visual equator and contains the fovea, the tip of the pecten, a perifoveal region of the yellow field and a small crescent of the red field. In agreement with this anatomical heterogeneity, visual evoked potentials measured in different parts of the accessible tectum present steep variations in shape and size. These results are helpful to better design and interpret anatomical and physiological experiments involving the pigeon's visual system.
