Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is a global health condition that affects thousands of people. CMP can substantially affect the functional capacity and quality of life of the people impacted, resulting in high costs for health care and social security systems. Sociodemographic factors may play a significant role in pain chronification prevention and control programs. Thus, current risk factors for CMP must be seriously considered as part of an interdisciplinary management strategy. The purpose of the study was to identify the primary sociodemographic characteristics of CMP patients at a multidisciplinary and specialized center for chronic pain. This is a retrospective investigation based on a review of medical records. Age, gender, income, and the time of onset of pain symptoms were among the variables included in the analyzed data. To analyze variables related to the duration of discomfort, a multiple regression model was utilized. Sociodemographic factors explained 37.94% of experiencing prolonged pain, according to the study's findings. Being female and having a family income above the minimum wage were variables that were directly proportional to discomfort duration. Age was not associated with a prolonged duration of pain perception.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze exposure to ergonomic risks and the occurrence of musculoskeletal pain in workers in the Hospital Cleaning Service. METHOD: Convergent Care Research, with data production designed using mixed methods, implemented with 149 hospital cleaning workers. The methodological strategy of the convergent parallel project was employed, using observation, photographic records, questionnaires and convergence groups. The results were integrated through joint display. Data analysis with descriptive and inferential statistics and content analysis. RESULTS: the mixing of data highlighted the multifactorial nature of exposure to ergonomic risks (uncomfortable work postures; repetitive movements; prolonged orthostatism; use of equipment not adapted to the psychophysiological needs of workers) and musculoskeletal pain in the population investigated. The latter was prevalent in the lumbar spine, ankles or feet, wrists or hands, thoracic spine and shoulders. The concept of ergonomic risk was expanded and was influenced by the psychosocial aspects of work. CONCLUSION: the workers investigated are exposed to modifiable multifactorial ergonomic risks related to musculoskeletal pain. It is possible to promote innovations and teaching-learning actions to minimize them, such as the continuing education program, collectively constructed with recommendations for improvements.

BACKGROUND: A high workload has been associated with musculoskeletal pain in public school teachers. However, the hypothesis of the present study was that physical activity (PA) practice is able to attenuate this association. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the associations between high workload with musculoskeletal pain according to PA levels in public school teachers. METHODS: Teachers (nâ=â239) from 13 public schools were evaluated. Workload was assessed using a Likert scale in which teachers reported their perception of their work routine as: very low, low, regular, high, and very high. Musculoskeletal pain and PA were assessed using questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to investigate the association of high workload with PA levels and musculoskeletal pain in different body regions, compared to participants with normal workload, adjusted by sex, age, and socioeconomic status. RESULTS: A high workload was associated with higher chances of reporting pain in the wrists and hands (ORâ=â3.55; 95% CIâ=â1.27-9.89), knee (ORâ=â3.09; 95CI% â=â1.09-8.82), and feet and ankles (ORâ=â3.16; 95% CIâ=â1.03-9.76) in less active teachers. However, these associations were not observed in teachers considered more active. CONCLUSION: PA practice is able to act as a good protector against musculoskeletal pain in teachers, even in individuals with a high workload.

BACKGROUND: Estimates of prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in children and adolescents vary considerably and the impact of pain on children's life is often not considered. OBJECTIVE: To determine the one-month prevalence of disabling musculoskeletal pain in children and adolescents. The secondary aims are to: 1) determine the body region with the highest prevalence; 2) understand the characteristics of the children with disabling musculoskeletal pain; and 3) describe the parents' perception of the prevalence. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in public and private schools in the states of São Paulo and Ceará, Brazil. Children self-reported presence and impact of pain, pain intensity, psychosomatic symptoms, and quality of life. Parents completed parent-proxy versions and perception of the child's sleep quality. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise the data. RESULTS: A total of 2,688 children and adolescents were included in this study. The prevalence of disabling musculoskeletal pain in the previous month was 27.1%. The back was the region most often affected (51.8%). Children with disabling musculoskeletal pain were older, heavier, had worse relationships with their family, perceived their backpacks as heavy, carried their backpacks more with one shoulder, had more negative psychosomatic symptoms, had poorer quality of life, and had higher pain intensity. Parents tended to underestimate the presence of pain in their children. CONCLUSION: The one-month prevalence of activity limiting musculoskeletal pain in children and adolescents was 27.1% with the back being the most often affected body region. Parents tended to underestimate the presence of pain in their children.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the presence of musculoskeletal pain during the working day among nursing professionals in material and sterilization centers. METHOD: A cross-sectional study with 36 nursing professionals who answered a questionnaire for personal characterization and diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders and Corlett and Manenica's diagram of painful areas at the beginning and end of the working day. Frequency distribution analysis, Fisher's exact test and likelihood ratio were carried out. RESULTS: The presence of pain was reported by 80.6% (n = 29) of the participants at the start of the working day and 94.4% (n = 34) at the end, and the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was 66.6% (n = 24). There was a statistically significant difference in the number of segments with pain between professionals with and without a diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders, in the initial and final assessments. The lumbar spine had a higher prevalence of pain in both assessments. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of pain increased towards the end of the working day and indicates that there may be a relationship between the work process and the development of pain. It is important to identify working conditions that may contribute to the onset of pain and to adopt preventive measures.

CONTEXT: Wheelchair Power Soccer (WPS) is the only team sport that allows the participation of people with severe physical disabilities who require the daily use of motorized wheelchairs. These individuals may live with chronic pain due to the characteristics of the disabilities and treatments, interfering with their health and limiting their participation in sports. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and its relationship with mood in WPS players and to analyze the incidence of traumatic injuries during a championship. METHODS: A prospective, longitudinal study was carried out on 30 WPS athletes (93.33% male) with a mean (SD) (range) age of 22.37 (9.79) (47) years. Data collection was performed during a South American WPS Championship lasting 3 days, with: investigation of the presence of musculoskeletal pain and mood through a questionnaire; investigation of the occurrence of traumatic injuries through match observation; and confirmation of the occurrence of traumatic injuries through access to medical department records. RESULTS: About 30% (n = 9/30) of the sample presented some pain on the day of evaluation, with an intensity of 5.67 (3.35) (10) points on the visual analog scale. The most common regions of pain were the lower back (13.3%, n = 4/30), thoracic (10%; n = 3/30), and cervical (10%; n = 3/30) areas of the spine. A total of 46.7% (n = 14/30) reported pain in the month before data collection but of less intensity (2.56 [4] [10] points), the most common regions being the lower limbs (20%; n = 6/30) and cervical spine (20%; n = 6/30). Among the between-group comparisons (ie, participants with pain vs without pain), no relationship was observed between mood state and pain. No traumatic injuries were identified during the competition. CONCLUSION: The presence of musculoskeletal pain was common in WPS players, but it was not related to mood. As no traumatic injuries were observed during the championship, this modality seems to be safe for people with physical disabilities in general.

Smartphone addiction and its excessive use could cause musculoskeletal symptoms such neck and upper limb pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between smartphone use and musculoskeletal pain in the upper limbs and neck, as well as to observe the relationship in between smartphone addiction and musculoskeletal pain and upper limb function in university students. It is a cross-sectional, analytical study. A total of 165 university students participated in the research. Each student had their own smartphone. The students answered a structured questionnaire about pain in the upper limbs and neck; the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH). Prevalence of neck and upper limb pain was 34.0%. Smartphone addiction and its use to play games and listen to music were risk factors to upper limb pain. Moreover, the smartphone addiction and age proved to be risk factors to neck pain. There was correlation between DASH and SPAI scores, and there was association between DASH score and neck and upper limb pain. Being of the female sex and smartphone addiction predicted the risk of incapacity development. We found association between neck and upper limb pain with smartphone addiction. Functional incapacity was associated to neck and upper limb pain. It was predicted by smartphone addiction and being of the female sex.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal pain (MSP) is the largest contributor to chronic pain and frequently occurs alongside other medical comorbidities. OBJECTIVE: Explore the relationships between the presence of pain-related comorbidities, pain intensity, and pain-related psychological distress in patients with MSP. METHODS: A longitudinal assessment of individuals 18-90 years old in the Midwestern United States beginning a new episode of physical therapy for MSP. Electronic medical records were assessed the full year prior for care-seeking of diagnoses for pain-related comorbidities (anxiety, metabolic disorder, chronic pain, depression, nicotine dependence, post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep apnea, and sleep insomnia). Pain intensity and pain-related psychological distress (Optimal Screening for Prediction of Referral and Outcome - Yellow Flags tool) were captured during the physical therapy evaluation. Generalized linear models were used to assess the association between pain intensity, psychological distress, and pain-related co-morbidities. Models were adjusted for variables shown in the literature to influence pain. RESULTS: 532 participants were included in the cohort (56.4% female; median age of 59 years, Interquartile Range [IQR]:47, 69). Comorbid depression (beta coefficient (ß) = 0.7; 95%CI: 0.2, 1.2), spine versus lower extremity pain ((ß = 0.6; 95%CI: 0.1, 1.1), and prior surgery (ß = 0.8, 95%CI: 0.3, 1.4) were associated with higher pain intensity scores. No pain-related comorbidities were associated with pain-related psychological distress (yellow flag count or number of domains). Female sex was associated with less pain-related psychological distress (ß = -0.2, 95%CI: -0.3, -0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Depression was associated with greater pain intensity. No comorbidities were able to account for the extent of pain-related psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the reorganization of health services to cater to the needs of individuals affected by the virus. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between musculoskeletal pain during and after SARS-CoV-2 infection and the utilization of health services among adults in southern Brazil. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with individuals aged 18 years and older, who were diagnosed with COVID-19 between December 2020 and March 2021. Questionnaires were electronically collected using tablets through the REDCap platform via phone calls. The health service utilization outcomes assessed included Primary Health Care, general practitioners, private emergency care, and specialized services. The exposure variable was the presence of musculoskeletal pain during and after SARS-CoV-2 infection in different regions, such as cervical, upper limbs, thoracic, lumbar, and lower limbs. Poisson regression analysis was employed to assess the relationship between health service utilization during and after SARS-CoV-2 infection and musculoskeletal pain during and after the infection with SARS-CoV-2 among adults in southern Brazil. Data were analyzed using the Stata 16.1 statistical package. RESULTS: A total of 2,919 individuals were interviewed. Overall, individuals with musculoskeletal pain were found to utilize health services approximately 15 percentage points higher when compared to those without musculoskeletal pain. In adjusted analysis, individuals who reported musculoskeletal pain during and after SARS-CoV-2 infection were up to twice as likely to use health services. Among them, the emergency care unit was the most frequently used service, particularly in those with pain in the lower limbs (RP=2.19, 95% CI 1.66-2.87) and thoracic region (RP=2.04, 95% CI 1.47-2.84). Notably, the highest magnitudes of association were observed with emergency care units, specialist doctors, and specialized services, especially neurologists, who were two to three times more likely to be sought, followed by pulmonologists. CONCLUSION: Health service utilization was significantly associated with musculoskeletal pain during and after SARS-CoV-2 infection. All regions, except for the cervical region, showed a correlation with the use of Primary Health Care. The thoracic region featured an association with pulmonologists and emergency room utilization. Additionally, health services like emergency care units, specialist doctors, and specialized services, including cardiologists and neurologists, were commonly utilized across all regions in southern Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesizes the evidence on prospective bidirectional associations between sleep-related problems (SRP) and chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP). METHODS: A literature search for cohort studies available in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO and Cochrane Library databases as of 19 July 2022 was performed. Pooled odds ratios and effect sizes were calculated through random effects meta-analysis. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore differences by follow-up time, proportion of each sex and mean age. The Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines were strictly followed. RESULTS: Twenty studies with a total of 208 190 adults (aged 34.4-71.7 years) were included, with 17 of them being used in the meta-analysis. Individuals with SRP at baseline had a 1.79-fold higher incidence (odds ratio [OR] = 1.79; 95% CI: 1.55, 2.08; I2 = 84.7%; P < 0.001) and a 2.04-fold higher persistence (OR = 2.04; 95% CI: 1.42, 2.94; I2 = 88.5%; P < 0.005) of CMP than those without SRP. In the subgroup analysis of the association between SRP and CMP, the longer the follow-up time of the studies, the higher the heterogeneity between them. In the corresponding meta-regression, no significant effect was observed for follow-up time, sex proportion or age. Individuals with CMP at baseline had a 2.02-fold higher incidence of SRP (OR = 2.02; 95% CI: 1.62, 2.53; I2 = 90.0%; P < 0.001) than those without CMP. CONCLUSION: This study provides robust evidence concerning the longitudinal association between SRP and incidence-persistence of CMP in adults. In addition, the available prospective studies support the existence of a bidirectional relationship between CMP and SRP. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42020212360.

Background: Musculoskeletal pain is a frequent condition among dental practitioners due to working in prolonged static isometric/eccentric contraction. The study aimed to describe musculoskeletal pain prevalence and the interplay between environmental conditions, lifestyle, and drugs consumed among Italian and Peruvian dentists. Methods: A 18 multiple choice questionnaire was administered to Peruvian and Italian dental care practitioners. A total of 187 questionnaires were submitted. One hundred sixty-seven questionnaires were selected for the analysis, including 86 questionnaires from Italy, and 81 from Perú. The study examined musculoskeletal pain presence in dental practitioners. The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain presence was analyzed considering different parameters: gender, age, type of dental practitioners, specialization in dentistry, hours of work per day, years of work, physical activity, localization of musculoskeletal pain and the influence of musculoskeletal pain on the performance on work. Results: The selected questionnaires for analysis were 167 (67 from Italy and 81 from Perú). Male and female participants were numerically equal. Most of the dental practitioners were dentists. The percentage of dentists who present musculoskeletal pain is 87.2% in Italy and 91.4% in Perú (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Musculoskeletal pain represents a very diffused condition in dental practitioners. The results about the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain show how the two populations (Italian and Peruvian) are very similar despite the geographical distance. Nevertheless, the high percentages of musculoskeletal pain in dental practitioners translate into the need to use solutions to reduce its onsets, such as improving ergonomics and physical activity.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to observe the prevalence and intensity of musculoskeletal pain and the quality of life in mothers of children with microcephaly and also to compare the scores of the quality of life domains between mothers who had or did not have musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study that evaluated mothers of children with a clinical diagnosis of microcephaly, due to congenital Zika virus syndrome, in the state of Pernambuco, northeast region, Brazil. To assess musculoskeletal pain, the Nordic Questionnaire of Musculoskeletal Symptoms was used, pain intensity was assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale and quality of life by the SF-36 Questionnaire. RESULTS: Of the 63 mothers evaluated, 59 (93.7%) reported currently experiencing musculoskeletal pain. The lumbar spine was the body region with the highest prevalence of pain (77.8%), followed by the thoracic spine (57.1%) and cervical spine (50.8%). Pain intensity was higher in the lumbar spine (6.00 ± 0.47), thoracic spine (4.44 ± 0.52) and shoulders (3.81 ± 0.51). The domains that presented the lowest scores in the quality of life assessment were general health status (49.0 ± 3.19), emotional aspects (49.7 ± 5.88) and pain (49.7 ± 2.50). Mothers who had musculoskeletal pain had lower scores in all domains of quality of life assessment compared to mothers who did not have pain, demonstrating significant differences for functional capacity (P = 0.035), physical aspects (P = 0.047) and pain (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was observed in mothers of children with microcephaly, with a higher prevalence and intensity in the lumbar spine. The domains related to physical and emotional health presented the worst scores in the quality of life of the evaluated mothers and the presence of musculoskeletal pain reduced the quality of life of the mothers of children with microcephaly in this study.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior has been associated with musculoskeletal pain in school teachers. However, our hypothesis is that physical activity practice could mitigate this association. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of musculoskeletal pain with high screen-based sedentary behavior among public school teachers and whether physical activity could mitigate this relationship. METHOD: A sample of 246 teachers from 13 public schools were assessed (45.0 ± 10.4 years, 76.0% of women). Musculoskeletal pain was assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, screen-based sedentary behavior was measured considering the sum of screen time in television, computer, and smartphone/tablet, and physical activity using the Baecke habitual physical activity questionnaire. Binary logistic regression was used to verify the associations between high screen-based sedentary behavior and musculoskeletal pain in school teachers (Model 1-unadjusted; Model 2-adjusted by age, sex, and socioeconomic status; Model 3-variables of Model 2 + adjusted by physical activity). RESULTS: High screen-based sedentary behavior was associated with pain in neck (odds ratio = 2.09; 95%confidence interval = 1.08-4.04), upper back (odds ratio = 2.21; 95%confidence interval = 1.07-4.56), and low back (odds ratio = 1.91; 95%confidence interval = 1.00-3.65). However, after inserting the variables, including physical activity, these associations were mitigated. CONCLUSIONS: High screen-based sedentary behavior was associated with musculoskeletal pain in public school teachers. However, this relationship was mitigated after the inclusion of confounding variables, including physical activity.

INTRODUCTION: in March 2020, lockdown was established in Spain because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study is to assess its impact on pain and quality of life in patients with musculoskeletal pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: prospective study including 490 individuals grouped in: 140 people without pain, 140 people with musculoskeletal pain but without any related pathology diagnosed, 140 patients diagnosed for a musculoskeletal condition and 70 patients in surgical waiting list (SWL) for a musculoskeletal condition. Data regarding pain, physical activity and quality of life (EuroQol-5D) was collected at the beginning of lockdown and one year after (March 2021). RESULTS: mean age was 53 ± 17.5 years old (18-88) and 51.3% were women. Patients in SWL referred significantly more pain than the rest of groups (p < 0.001), with a score in the visual analogue scale of 6.3 ± 1.9. Groups 3 and 4 suffered a significant increase of their pain from 2020 to 2021 (p < 0.001), while decreasing in group 2 (p < 0.001). Analgesics intake grew from 2020 to 2021 (39.9% versus 44.3%, p = 0.007). 70.2% experienced a worsening of at least one dimension of EuroQol-5D over last year, with patients in SWL being the most affected (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: lockdown has caused in patients with musculoskeletal conditions a greater aggravation of pain and deterioration of quality of life than in the general population, especially in patients in SWL, translating in an increase in analgesics intake.
INTRODUCCIÓN: en Marzo de 2020 se estableció el confinamiento en España debido a la pandemia por COVID-19. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar su impacto en el dolor y la calidad de vida de personas con dolor osteomuscular. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: estudio prospectivo que incluyó 490 personas agrupadas en: 140 personas sin dolor (grupo 1), 140 personas con dolor osteomuscular, pero sin patología diagnosticada (grupo 2), 140 pacientes con patología musculoesquelética (grupo 3) y 70 pacientes en lista de espera quirúrgica (LEQ) por patología musculoesquelética (grupo 4). Se recogieron datos sobre el dolor, la actividad física y la calidad de vida (EuroQol-5D) al inicio del confinamiento y un año después. RESULTADOS: la edad media fue de 53 ± 17.5 años (18-88) y 51.3% fueron mujeres. Las personas en LEQ refirieron un dolor significativamente mayor que el resto de grupos (p < 0.001) con una puntuación en la escala visual analógica del dolor de 6.3 ± 1.9. Los grupos 3 y 4 sufrieron un aumento significativo de su dolor desde 2020 hasta 2021 (p < 0.001), mientras que en el grupo 2 disminuyó (p < 0.001). El consumo de analgésicos creció de 2020 a 2021 (39.9% versus 44.3%, p = 0.007); 70.2% sufrió un empeoramiento en alguna de las dimensiones del EuroQol-5D, siendo el grupo en LEQ el más afectado (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONES: el confinamiento ha producido en pacientes con patología musculoesquelética un empeoramiento del dolor y de calidad de vida mayor que en el resto de personas, especialmente en aquéllas en espera de cirugía, traduciéndose en un aumento del consumo de analgésicos.

En tiempos de COVID-19, el teletrabajo se hizo frecuente, ya que producto de la pandemia, gran parte de trabajadores debió quedarse en casa y trabajar a distancia. El Objetivo consiste en determinar la prevalencia del dolor músculoesquelético auto informado por los trabajadores(as) del tren gerencial de una empresa de alimentos venezolana. Se realizó un estudio cuantitativo, trasversal y descriptivo. El muestreo fue intencional quedando conformado por 243 trabajadores. Como técnica de recolección de datos se utilizó la observación directa y como instrumento el cuestionario, desarrollado bajo la aplicación Google Forms®. Asimismo, se utilizó el método ROSA para cuantificar los riesgos asociados con el trabajo en computadora. Resultados: El 61,79% de los participantes eran masculinos; con edad promedio de 45,86±9,0 años. Las regiones del cuerpo más afectadas por molestias musculo esqueléticas fueron el cuello, la espalda baja y la muñeca derecha, con tasas de prevalencia de 85,8%, 66,5% y 53,3% respectivamente. El sexo femenino, se asoció significativamente con la aparición de dolor en hombro derecho y espalda alta. El riesgo de trastornos musculo esqueléticos, según el método ROSA se asoció de manera significativa con dolencias en cuello, hombro derecho, espalda alta, espalda baja y muñeca derecha. En Conclusión, existe asociación entre la edad y el sexo, las condiciones inseguras de las estaciones de trabajo, el incremento de las horas de trabajo y disminución de pausa, la falta de formación en ergonomía con la alta prevalencia de dolencias musculo esqueléticas(AU)
In times of COVID-19, teleworking became frequent, since as a result of the pandemic, a large number of workers had to stay at home and work remotely. The Objective is to determine the prevalence of self-reported musculoskeletal pain by workers in the management board of a Venezuelan food company. A quantitative, crosssectional and descriptive study was carried out. The sampling was intentional, being made up of 243 workers. Direct observation was used as a data collection technique and the questionnaire, developed under the Google Forms® application, was used as an instrument. Likewise, the ROSA method was used to quantify the risks associated with computer work. Results: 61.79% of the participants were male; with an average age of 45.86 ± 9.0 years. The regions of the body most affected by musculoskeletal complaints were the neck, lower back, and right wrist, with prevalence rates of 85.8%, 66.5%, and 53.3%, respectively. The females sex were significantly associated with the appearance of pain in the right shoulder and upper back. The risk of musculoskeletal disorders, according to the ROSA method, was significantly associated with pain in the neck, right shoulder, upper back, lower back, and right wrist. In conclusion, there is an association between age and sex, the unsafe conditions of the work stations, the increase in working hours and the decrease in breaks, the lack of training in ergonomics with the high prevalence of musculoskeletal ailments(AU)

BACKGROUND: Social distancing was implemented worldwide due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This impacted physical activity levels and increased the time spent in sedentary behaviors which may contributed to the emergence of increased musculoskeletal complaints. OBJECTIVE: To assess the consequences of social distancing for the increase in perceived pain of students and professors from higher education institutions. METHODS: One thousand two hundred and fifty-four participants responded to an online survey containing sociodemographic information and questions related to daily habits, physical activity profile, and musculoskeletal pain before and during the pandemic. Levels of concentration, nervousness, productivity, and visual fatigue were also assessed. The primary outcome was presence of perceived pain before and during the pandemic, dichotomized between those with and without increased pain during the pandemic. RESULTS: Perceived pain increased during the pandemic (pâ<â0.001) and was associated with females (pâ=â0.023; PRâ=â1.16; 95% CIâ=â1.02-1.32), income up to one minimum wage (pâ=â0.039; PRâ=â1.20; 95% CIâ=â1.01-1.42), no physical activity practice (pâ=â0.006; PRâ=â1.22; 95% CIâ=â1.06-1.40), long time in sedentary behavior (pâ=â0.013; PRâ=â3.07; 95% CIâ=â1.27-7.43), and electronic device usage forâ>â6 hours (pâ=â0.041; PRâ=â1.44; 95% CIâ=â1.02-2.06). Nervousness (pâ=â0.001) and visual fatigue (pâ=â0.001) increased, whereas concentration (pâ=â0.001) and productivity (pâ=â0.001) reduced during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: Reduced physical activity practice and increased time in sedentary behavior and electronic device usage during the pandemic were associated with increased musculoskeletal pain in students and professors from higher education institutions. Decreased concentration and productivity and increased nervousness and visual fatigue were also observed during the pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between musculoskeletal pain and sociodemographic and labor variables of nurses in the hospital setting. METHOD: Cross-sectional, descriptive research, carried out from December/2019 to March/2020, with 83 nurses from a philanthropic hospital. Sociodemographic, labor, pain-related characteristics were assessed and analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: 75.9% had pain, tingling and numbness in the last year. Most affected regions: neck, upper back, and shoulders; 36% rated their pain as moderate and 14.6% severe; Nurses who work 8 hours a day, 40/44 hours a week and work at night, assessed their pain with greater intensity; there was a correlation between pain intensity and daily working hours (p = 0.046) and work shift (p = 0.029). CONCLUSION: Nurses feel musculoskeletal pain in several anatomical regions and its intensity is related to the training time and acting in nursing, shift and weekly workload.

ABSTRACT: Musculoskeletal pain is a global health concern, and work-related psychosocial stress might be a potential contributing factor. This cross-sectional study investigates whether job stress is associated with chronic and widespread musculoskeletal pain in 2051 Brazilian active civil servants included in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health Musculoskeletal (ELSA-Brasil MSK). Job stress was assessed using the Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI) questionnaire. Associations between ERI domains, categorized into tertiles, and chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) at any site and per number of affected sites (0, 1-2, ≥3-multisite pain) and body regions (0, 1-2, 3-generalized pain), were investigated using binary and multinomial logistic regression, adjusted for sociodemographic, occupational, and health covariates. The prevalence of CMP at any site, multisites, and generalized regions was 52.9%, 18.2%, and 9.5%, respectively. After adjustments, the lower the reward and the greater the overcommitment, the higher the odds of CMP at any site. The ERI domains were more strongly associated with multisite and generalized CMP than with CMP at any site. Multisite CMP was associated with lower reward and with greater effort, overcommitment, and effort-reward imbalance ratio. Chronic musculoskeletal pain according to body regions, especially generalized pain, was also associated with ERI domains effort (OR = 2.06; 95%CI = 1.33-3.21), overcommitment (OR = 3.44; 95%CI = 2.20-5.39), and effort-reward imbalance ratio (OR = 2.06; 95%CI = 1.30-3.27). Results reveal an association between job stress not only with CMP at any site but notably with the pain spread to other body sites or regions. Our findings suggest that lowering stress at work and discouraging overcommitment may help reduce the CMP burden, including reduction of CMP spread from one site or region of the body to another.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies focusing on multisite musculoskeletal pain have revealed that the prevalence of multisite pain is high in general populations. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of multisite musculoskeletal pain in the last 12 months and in the last seven days, in a population-based sample and investigate its association with demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, reported morbidity and ergonomic variables. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional population-based survey in Bauru, São Paulo (Brazil). METHODS: 600 individuals were interviewed. The following data were collected: participants' characteristics, through a precoded questionnaire; physical activity level, through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire; and musculoskeletal symptoms, through the Nordic questionnaire. Descriptive, bivariate and Poisson regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of multisite musculoskeletal pain was 46.5% (confidence interval, CI 42.5 to 50.5) in the last 12 months and 26.1% (CI 22.8 to 29.8) in the last seven days. The variables associated with multisite pain in the last 12 months were female sex, presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus or depression, watching TV more than three times a week and working in a seated position. Formerly smoking was a protection factor. The variables associated with multisite pain in the last seven days were female sex, age group 60 years and over, low income, presence of comorbidities of hypertension, diabetes mellitus or depression and working in a seated position. CONCLUSION: There was high prevalence of multisite musculoskeletal pain, which was associated with demographic, socioeconomic, work-related, electronic device-related and reported morbidity variables.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) can be characterized from their occupational etiology and their occurrence; their chronicity generates negative repercussions for the health of workers, especially of artisanal fishing. To investigate the prevalence of generalized musculoskeletal disorders by body region and self-reported pain in a fishing population of northeastern Brazil, an epidemiological cross-sectional study was carried out in Santiago do Iguape, Bahia-Brazil, in 2017. The Brazilian version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), in addition to a questionnaire containing the socio-demographic and labor conditions were applied to a random stratified sample of 248 artisanal fisheries. There were 170 female shellfish gatherers and 78 fishermen, with a mean age of 36.7 years (SD = 10.5 years) and 43.3 years (SD = 11.8 years), respectively. The beginning of the labor activity was initiated at approximately 11 years of age. The average weekly income varied from 17.64 USD to 29.10 USD. The prevalence of MSD independent of occupation occurred in at least one body region in 93.5% and the presence of musculoskeletal pain/discomfort over the last seven days in 95.2% of the fishing workers. The highest prevalence of MSD was found in shellfish gatherers in: lower back (86.4%), wrist and hand (73.5%), and upper back (66.8%). In relation to the presence of pain in the last year, the frequency of pain was greater in the fishermen compared to the shellfish gatherers. The generalized severity of the MSD in 93.5% of this community of fishermen is evident, with emphasis in the following regions: lower back, wrist and hand and upper back in both groups, with occurrence of pain in more than one body region at the same time.
