RESUMEN

Background: The chemodectoma is a rare neoplasm that originates from chemoreceptors located mainly in the aortic body, and carotid body and sinus, and responsible for detecting variations in blood pH, oxygen pressure and carbon dioxide. Dogsof brachiocephalic breeds and aged between 7 and 15 years have greater propensity. A neoplasm involves infiltrative growthin the vessels at the heart base, which leads to Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). The definitive diagnosis is performed byhistopathological and/or immunohistochemical examination. The aim was to report a case of chemiodectoma in a dog, showing the diseases clinical characteristics.Case: A 13-year-old male undefined breed dog was examinated in the medical clinic of small animal of Veterinary Hospital,Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) with respiratory effort, hyporexia, and edema in face, cervical, ventralthorax and thoracic limbs, with thirty days evoluted. About physical examination, we observed cachexia, orthopneic position, cyanosis and edema with a positive Godet sign, as well as 8% dehydration degree. Thoracic auscultation presentedmixed dyspnea and muffled heart sounds. Chest radiography detected an radiopacity increase in pulmonary section andmetastatic neoplastic process associated with pleural and pericardial effusion. Fluid therapy with lactated ringer and posteriorthoracentesis in the right hemithorax region was performed for greater respiratory comfort for the patient. Hematologicalcount and biochemical profiles stated normochromic normocytic anemia, relative and absolute lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, as well as increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). The patient diedafter 12 hours when was submitted to necroscopic examination and histopathological evaluation. An infiltrative tumor ofcardiac base was observed invading the light of the right atrium, obstructing the venous return, as well as a large thrombus...(AU)

The ingestion of detritus by sea turtles results in high mortality and morbidity. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of free-living sea turtles that ingested anthropogenic inorganic detritus in comparison to those that did not. A total of 186 necropsy files were analyzed in marine turtles from the beaches of the Microregion dos Lagos, Rio de Janeiro. Among the turtles that ingested detritus, the mean turtle was female and cachectic, with a carapace length of 36,6 cm, detritus accumulated in the large intestine, and fecal compaction. It seems most likely that's low food transit, combined with the multiplicity of ingestion, favored the accumulation of detritus. This ingestion resulted in cachexia associated with fecal compaction, since the greatest accumulation was in the large intestine. The intake of detritus by turtles was not punctual but continuous. These studies demonstrated the vulnerability of these animals to environmental pollution.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To assess antioxidant effects of açaí seed extract on anorexia-cachexia induced by Walker-256 tumor. METHODS: A population of 20 lab rats were distributed into four groups (n=5): Control Group (CG), which only received tumor inoculation. Experimental Group-100 (EG-100), with animals submitted to tumor inoculation and treated with seed extract in a 100 mg / ml concentration through gavage. Experimental Group-200 (EG-200), with animals submitted to tumor inoculation and treated with seed extract in a 200 mg / ml concentration. Placebo Group (GP), which received tumor inoculation and ethanol-water solution. We analyzed proteolysis, lipid peroxidation, tumor diameter and weight. RESULTS: Lipid peroxidation was representative only in the cerebral cortex, where there was more oxidative stress in rats treated with the extract (p = 0.0276). For proteolysis, there was less muscle damage in untreated rats (p = 0.0312). Only tumor diameter in treated rats was significantly lower (p = 0.0200) compared to untreated ones. CONCLUSIONS: The açaí seed extract showed no beneficial effect on the general framework of the cachectic syndrome in lab rats. However, some anticarcinogenic effects were observed in the tumor diameter and weight.(AU)

RESUMEN

There are very few reports of lymphoma in sheep in the literature. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to report the prevalence of this disease among sheep cared for in the Clinic of Cattle in the Campus Garanhuns of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE). The results were obtained from a four year old sheep (weight 40 kg) that had been reared in a semi-intensive system. The owner reported that he had acquired this animal three months earlier from another herd and that, one month later; he had noticed that the animal was apathetic, no appetite and distanced itself from the herd. The animal was treated unsuccessfully on the farm. The animal exhibited clinical signs of apathy, tachycardia, cachexia and anorexia, as well as ruminal and intestinal hypomotility. The hemogram showed evidence of leukocytosis by neutrophilia, with the presence of deteriorated leukocytes in the blood smear. The serology (IDGA) for the enzootic bovine leukosis virus was negative. The ultrasound confirmed severe lung disease. The animal died after seven days. In the necropsy there was a mass in the subcutaneous tissue adhered to chest sternal there was a notable increase in the volume adhered in the external caudal subcutaneous region, with nodular characteristics and a whitish coloration. Identical, although smaller, nodulations were visualized in the serous membrane of the reticulum and the abomasum, with metastases in the kidneys, omentum, mesenteric lymph nodes, diaphragm, heart and lungs. The histopathology revealed atypical mantle structures, with multiple vacuoles and interspersed fibrous stroma. The tumoral cells were small, round, basophilic, with scarce cytoplasm and a large, round nucleus, with hyperchromatic qualities, dense chromatin and rare mitosis. The results of the present study confirm that this was a case of atypical lymphosarcoma in the sheep in question.(AU)

OBJECTIVE: The number of South American Camelids (New World Camelids) housed in Germany has increased in the recent years. While these species were formerly kept solely in zoological gardens, ever more private and commercial livestock is being established. Compared to indigenous livestock animals, they bear some distinctive differences, particularly in terms of digestive tract anatomy and physiology. Therefore, it is of considerable interest for veterinarians working with South American Camelids to obtain knowledge about the distinguishing features of these animals and the typical diseases affecting them in Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this purpose, the necropsy reports, including the anamnestic data, and their diagnostic usefulness, from 1995 to 2012 were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: Du- ring this period, a total of 233 New World Camelids were examined (195 alpacas and 38 llamas). Anamnestic data of diagnostic usefulness regarding the cause of disease were only submitted in a limited number of cases, because most of the animals died without specific symptoms. The following were the most frequent pathological findings: enteritis (n = 91), gastritis (n = 76), cachexia (n = 73), pneumonia (n = 30), stomatitis (n = 27), azotaemia (n = 22) and anaemia (n = 9). An endoparasitosis occurred in 107 cases and was considered the predominant cause of enteritis. CONCLUSION: As with indigenous ruminants, llamas and alpacas primarily suffered from diseases of the digestive and respiratory tracts. Other organ systems were affected to a lesser extent. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Even in cases with severe alterations in the affected organs, South American Camelids do not show or show too late diagnostically indicative clinical symptoms. Therefore, a detailed clinical examination of these animals is important.

We report the case of a mixed breed dog, male, 9 month old and 7Kg, which was seen at the Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Estadual de Londrina due to progressive failure to feeding for more than a month, and progressive weight loss. The animal was irritable and difficult to contain. On physical examination it was observed cachexia, severe hypotrophy of the masseter and temporal muscles and mandibularprognathism, making it impossible to open the mouth more than 2mm and to expose the tongue. Wesuspected that this problem was a sequel of myositis of the masticatory muscles and due to severity and bad prognosis for return of the function of mastication we opted for performing bilateral rostral mandbulectomy so the patient could eat. The day after surgery the dog has started to feed alone, with food for dogs hit in the blender, with tongue movements. After three weeks there was marked improvement in itsgeneral condition, increase in body weight and behavior of the animal. Despite this therapeutic approacharen’t described in literature, was solved the food problem and the animal does not to depend on a foodprobe and intensive care.

Cachexia is the most common paraneoplastic syndrome in domestic animals causing gradual loss ofweight, muscle and fat, even if there is an adequate caloric intake. This loss is due to changes in themetabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins caused by paraneoplstic syndrome. Clinically, theanimal also presents anorexia, weakness, fatigue and impaired immune function. The constant monitoringof nutritional patients, with the determination of energy requirements and choice of diet areimportant for the occurrence of the institution of appropriate therapy according to individual patient characteristics. The provision of carbohydrate should be restricted, increasing of proteins and lipidslevels to do a better energy supply and decrease cachexia. Supplementation with certain amino acids, vitamins and minerals can help at antineoplastic therapy, although studies are still needed to be betterapplied in nutritional therapy. Nutritional therapy aims at the provision of nutrients and energyneeded to maintain the body function, allowing a better quality of life, longevity and response to antineoplastictreatment.
