BACKGROUND: The number of people suffering from chronic diseases requiring palliative care (PC) is increasing rapidly. Therefore, PC teaching in undergraduate health science programs is necessary to improve primary PC based on international recommendations and available scientific evidence. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. Active undergraduate medical and nursing programs that were approved by the Colombian Ministry of Education and integrated PC teaching into their curricula were included in the study. The total sample consisted of 48 programs: 31 nursing and 17 medical programs. RESULTS: PC competencies are distributed throughout the curriculum in 41.67% of programs, in elective courses in 31.25%, and in mandatory courses in 27.08% of the programs. The average PC teaching hours is 81 for nursing and 57.6 for medicine. PC clinical rotations are not offered in 75% of the programs. For undergraduate nursing programs, the most frequent competencies taught are the definition and history of PC and identifying common symptoms associated with advanced disease. In undergraduate medicine, the most common competencies are pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management and identification of PC needs. CONCLUSIONS: PC teaching in undergraduate health science programs mainly addresses the conceptual and theoretical aspects of PC, which are part of the competencies present throughout the programs' curricula. Low availability of PC clinical rotations was identified. Future studies should assess whether the low availability of clinical rotations in PC limits the ability of students to develop the practical competencies necessary to provide quality PC. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

OBJECTIVES: to comprehend the perception of undergraduate nursing students about learning to care for the child and family through clinical simulation. METHODS: this is a qualitative research conducted with ten nursing students through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed through content analysis. RESULTS: data were organized into two categories: "learning a new way to learn," in which students describe their experiences during the simulation, and "learning a new way to care," in which they reflect on learning through simulation. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: we believe that clinical simulation practice in teaching should be encouraged because of the benefits it can offer to the students, faculty, patients and their families. However, we recommend further studies to validate scenarios of child and family healthcare.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the social representations of newly undergraduate nurses on the intensive care of Nursing to critical patients hospitalized in non-critical patient units. METHOD: Qualitative and descriptive research. Twenty-six newly undergraduate nurses from a private university participated. An in-depth interview was conducted with semi-structured script. The analysis was of lexical type with the help of Alceste 2012 software. RESULTS: The social representations were built according to the image of the intensive care unit, although patients were out of this environment. Care is understood as complex and specialized, requiring graduate training. Therefore, undergraduation training was considered insufficient to provide this type of care, creating fear and insecurity in the newly undergraduate nurses. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Intensive care confronts newly undergraduate nurses with feelings of unpreparedness to care for, but it mobilizes to broaden the knowledge to provide care. There is evidence of a theory-practice dichotomy and weaknesses in teaching-learning experiences in undergraduate education.

OBJECTIVE: to carry out a literature review to characterize the production in the Nursing area about the use of movies and videos in Nursing education, related to underlying communication assumptions and contents taught. METHOD: integrative bibliographic review carried out in the PUBMED databases, CAPES journal portal, and SCIELO online library, with studies from 2007 to 2016. RESULTS: 36 articles were included, in which audiovisual resources are part of the research subject. There are predominance of validation and effectiveness studies, in which audiovisual resources are used mostly as a reproduction of reality, mainly to develop clinical skills, with the purpose of illustrating procedures or bringing students closer to real contexts of action. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: the results point to a weak theoretical support of most of the studies. It is suggested that more empirical research be conducted to offer more consistent contributions to Nursing teaching.

ABSTRACT Objective: to carry out a literature review to characterize the production in the Nursing area about the use of movies and videos in Nursing education, related to underlying communication assumptions and contents taught.
