RESUMEN

PURPOSES: This study aimed to develop and validate algorithms for automating intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) planning in breast cancer patients, with a focus on patient anatomical characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively selected 400 breast cancer patients without lymph node involvement for automated treatment planning. Automation was achieved using the Eclipse Scripting Application Programming Interface (ESAPI) integrated into the Eclipse Treatment Planning System. We employed three beam insertion geometries and three optimization strategies, resulting in 3600 plans, each delivering a 40.05 Gy dose in 15 fractions. Gantry angles in the tangent fields were selected based on a criterion involving the minimum intersection area between the Planning Target Volume (PTV) and the ipsilateral lung in the Beam's Eye View projection. ESAPI was also used to gather patient anatomical data, serving as input for Random Forest models to select the optimal plan. The Random Forest classification considered both beam insertion geometry and optimization strategy. Dosimetric data were evaluated in accordance with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) 1005 protocol. RESULTS: Overall, all approaches generated high-quality plans, with approximately 94% meeting the acceptable dose criteria for organs at risk and/or target coverage as defined by RTOG guidelines. Average automated plan generation time ranged from 6 min and 37 s to 9 min and 22 s, with the mean time increasing with additional fields. The Random Forest approach did not successfully enable automatic planning strategy selection. Instead, our automated planning system allows users to choose from the tested geometry and strategy options. CONCLUSIONS: Although our attempt to correlate patient anatomical features with planning strategy using machine learning tools was unsuccessful, the resulting dosimetric outcomes proved satisfactory. Our algorithm consistently produced high-quality plans, offering significant time and efficiency advantages.

RESUMEN

Introduction. The currently available dosimetry techniques in computed tomography can be inaccurate which overestimate the absorbed dose. Therefore, we aimed to provide an automated and fast methodology to more accurately calculate the SSDE usingDwobtained by using CNN from thorax and abdominal CT study images.Methods. The SSDE was determined from the 200 records files. For that purpose, patients' size was measured in two ways: (a) by developing an algorithm following the AAPM Report No. 204 methodology; and (b) using a CNN according to AAPM Report No. 220.Results. The patient's size measured by the in-house software in the region of thorax and abdomen was 27.63 ± 3.23 cm and 28.66 ± 3.37 cm, while CNN was 18.90 ± 2.6 cm and 21.77 ± 2.45 cm. The SSDE in thorax according to 204 and 220 reports were 17.26 ± 2.81 mGy and 23.70 ± 2.96 mGy for women and 17.08 ± 2.09 mGy and 23.47 ± 2.34 mGy for men. In abdomen was 18.54 ± 2.25 mGy and 23.40 ± 1.88 mGy in women and 18.37 ± 2.31 mGy and 23.84 ± 2.36 mGy in men.Conclusions. Implementing CNN-based automated methodologies can contribute to fast and accurate dose calculations, thereby improving patient-specific radiation safety in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

This work reports on new software for automatic conformer energy benchmarking calculations for flexible molecules. The software workflow consists of four parts: conformational search, preoptimization, optimization, and frequency calculations at a higher level and last calculations using several theoretical levels. The software was written to be user-friendly and versatile to be used by nonexperts in computational chemistry. Any theoretical levels available in either Gaussian 16 or ORCA 5 may be applied in the benchmarking study. The workflow will automatically run conformational search calculations and deal with conformers that converge to the same minimum and those that show a negative frequency. At the end of the workflow, the user will have the mean absolute deviations and the most accurate method/DFT functional and basis set in comparison to the benchmark to be applied for the molecular system of interest. Case examples are given at the end of the paper that may help users to get insight into the software's main features.

RESUMEN

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained significant popularity in recent years due to their unique ability to provide a high surface area and customizable pore geometry and chemistry, making them an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. However, exploring COFs experimentally can be arduous and time-consuming due to their immense number of potential structures. As a result, computational high-throughput studies have become an attractive option. Nevertheless, generating COF structures can also be a challenging and time-consuming task. To address this challenge, here, we introduce the pyCOFBuilder, an open-source Python package designed to facilitate the generation of COF structures for computational studies. The pyCOFBuilder software provides an easy-to-use set of functionalities to generate COF structures following the reticular approach. In this paper, we describe the implementation, main features, and capabilities of the pyCOFBuilder, demonstrating its utility for generating COF structures with varying topologies and chemical properties. pyCOFBuilder is freely available on GitHub at https://github.com/lipelopesoliveira/pyCOFBuilder.

RESUMEN

The use of temporary immersion systems (TIS) for plant micropropagation is an efficient technique for plant production, and we have applied it for the production of alstroemerias. This method involves the cultivation of explants such as rhizomes and axillary buds in a nutrient medium to stimulate shoot growth. TIS offer advantages such as accelerated multiplication processes, uniform production, and cost reduction. This process has shown promise in meeting the growing demand for alstroemeria plants in the market. This chapter describes a specific protocol for temporary immersion bioreactor micropropagation of the "Albatroz" cultivar, with the potential for large-scale automation.

RESUMEN

The linaloe [Bursera linanoe (La Llave) Rzed, Calderon and Medina] is an endemic species of Mexico, representative of the low deciduous forest of the states of Guerrero, Puebla, Morelos, and Oaxaca, and has been of great economic importance for the people, mainly for the artisanal use of its aromatic wood that is used to make boxes, trunks, and furniture that are manufactured in Olinala, Guerrero, Mexico; and industrial, thanks to the fine aroma of its essential oil (linalool), which is used in the manufacture of perfumes and pharmaceuticals. Overexploitation has endangered the species in recent years, and propagation by seed and/or cuttings has produced very poor results compared to those obtained with other recalcitrant Bursera species. The protection of endangered species makes urgent the need to propose new alternatives for its propagation. Somatic embryogenesis is a reliable and feasible technique, including induction, maintenance, multiplication, and maturation of embryos, often in semisolid culture media; however, the recent use of liquid media has allowed semi-automation in temporary immersion bioreactors, for example, the RITA® system, which favors both the multiplication rate and the final conversion to seedlings.

RESUMEN

Salvia is a very valuable medicinal plant for the pharmaceutical industry. Tissue culture techniques can be used to increase the number of plants in a shorter time. Although protocols for in vitro propagation of more than 15 plant species have been developed, they are not yet efficient enough to increase mass propagation of plants. Therefore, the use of temporary immersion systems is necessary to increase the morphological quality of plants as well as their biomass in several Salvia species. In this chapter, progress in in vitro propagation in several Salvia species using liquid medium and automation is described.

RESUMEN

DP4+ is one of the most popular methods for the structure elucidation of natural products using NMR calculations. While the method is simple and easy to implement, it requires a series of procedures that can be tedious, coupled with the fact that its computational demand can be high in certain cases. In this work, we made a substantial improvement to these limitations. First, we deeply explored the effect of molecular mechanics architecture on the DP4+ formalism (MM-DP4+). In addition, a Python applet (DP4+App) was developed to automate the entire process, requiring only the Gaussian NMR output files and a spreadsheet containing the experimental NMR data and labels. The script is designed to use the statistical parameters from the original 24 levels of theory (employing B3LYP/6-31G* geometries) and the new 36 levels explored in this work (over MMFF geometries). Furthermore, it enables the development of customizable methods using any desired level of theory, allowing for a free choice of test molecules.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Despite the broad adoption of Soleris® technology in the food industry as semiquantitative method, it is almost completely unexplored in the pharmaceutical industry as a quantitative method for quantification of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc). OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of an automated growth-based system for a quantitative determination of the Bcc in an antacid oral suspension was studied. The main purpose of this validation study was to prove that the alternative method's entire performance is not inferior to the conventional method for a quantitative determination of Bcc. METHOD: The antacid oral suspension's preservatives were neutralized, leading to the Burkholderia complex's recovery by means of the alternative method and the reference method. A calibration curve was generated for each strain by plotting DTs relative to the corresponding log CFU values. An equivalence of results was done through the construction of calibration curves that allowed the establishment of numerically equivalent results between the enumeration data from the reference method and the alternative method. RESULTS: Thus following the guidelines of USP, essential validation parameters were shown, such as equivalence of results (CC >0.95), linearity (R2 >0.9025), accuracy (% recovery >70%), operating range, precision and ruggedness (DS <5 and CV <35%), specificity (inclusivity and exclusivity), limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). CONCLUSIONS: It was shown that all the test results obtained from the alternative method were in statistical agreement with the standard method. Thus this new technology was found to meet all the validation criteria needed to be considered as an alternative method for the quantification of the Burkholderia complex in the antacid oral suspension tested. HIGHLIGHTS: As outlined in USP chapter <1223> and demonstrated in this research the implementation of alternative methods can offer benefits in execution and automation while improving accuracy, sensitivity, and precision and can reduce the microbiological process time compared to the traditional ones.

BACKGROUND: The recommended indicator for measuring antimicrobial (AMB) consumption in pediatric patients is the Days of Therapy indicator (DOT), which is then standardized by hospital occupancy rates (DOT-std). However, in hospitals that do not have electronic health records, obtaining the DOT requires a direct review of each pharmacological indication, which is not feasible in the long term. AIMS: To validate electronic records from the pharmacy dispensation system as a source for calculating DOT and estimating DOT-std in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). METHODS: AMB prescriptions at the PICU of a university hospital were directly reviewed (manual method) and compared with AMB dispensation records (computer method) obtained from the hospital pharmacy system. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient was used to evaluate the agreement between the DOT obtained by both methods. RESULTS: The most used AMB were vancomycin, meropenem, and piperacillin/tazobactam. A significant agreement between the DOT obtained by using manual and computer methods was found in 9 of 12 evaluated AMB. CONCLUSIONS: After a local validation process, the electronic records of the pharmacy drug dispensation system could be considered a valid source for calculating DOT in PICUs in hospitals where electronic health records with prescription data are not yet available.

Abstract The expansion of the use of machines in the field has promoted changes in the world of sugarcane work. Faced with this scenario, the question arises: How do work accidents and deaths behave in the mechanized reality of Brazilian sugarcane plantations? Predominantly quantitative, the research that supports this text uses secondary data collected from the Smartlab Platform and official government databases, linked to the formal labor market (RAIS). The results indicate that the set of agricultural activities (manual and mechanized) experienced a decrease in the incidence of work accidents, but did not show a reduction in the rate of work-related deaths. As a result, lethality increased in the period, demonstrating the preservation of the overexploitation of workers. This text is expected to shed light on the consequences generated by the agricultural mechanization process regarding the health and safety of sugarcane workers.

A household solid waste containerized and mechanized collection consists of distributing containers along the curbs and periodically emptying them with a collection vehicle. This vehicle has mechanical arms that transfer the solid waste from the container to its cargo compartment. The purpose of this research is to evaluate operational, economic and socio-environmental aspects of solid waste containerization system for both conventional and selective collection, in the urban area of Lençóis Paulista, Sao Paulo, Brazil. This is an exploratory research project with the application of qualitative and quantitative methods and a case study, carried out by data triangulation collected through literature review, city hall documental research, semi-structured interviews with municipal managers, questionnaire application with collection workers and pickers from the local recycling cooperative, forms application with residents and observation in loco. The results indicate that it was possible to have operational efficiency with changes in the waste collection system, reducing the collection time, despite the increase in mileage driven and fuel consumption by waste collector vehicles. The operating cost of both conventional and selective collection with containerization are lower than the Brazilian average. In the perception of the four public interviewed, the change from manual solid waste collection to containerization and mechanized collection was satisfactory, making the urban area cleaner and more organized. They improved working conditions for collector workers, reducing the number of work accidents. The biggest challenge for municipal management has been the correct solid waste separation and disposal in the containers, as well as the presence of independent recycling pikers who search the containers before the municipal collection service. The container cleaning is also the biggest complaint from the population. With the experiences lived in the city and the literature review, it was possible to elaborate a manual of good practices in solid waste containerization and mechanized collection for Brazilian cities as the product of this research.

RESUMEN

Several factors alter the quality of the mechanized sowing process of corn, and the use of the statistical process control (SPC) technique not only allows the identification of process limitation points but also ensures the correct functioningand conduction of the mechanized process, determiningcritical factors. that may decrease their performance. In view of the above, the present study aims to qualitatively evaluate, through this technique, the longitudinal distribution of corn seeds as a function of different stands and operational speeds during the sowing process. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design (CBD) with three replications and in a split-plot design. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and when significant, analyzed using Tukey's test, with 5% significance. To carry out the statistical process control, mean and amplitude control charts were used to evaluate the effect of operationalspeed, seed distribution, deposition depth and plant germination. The results indicate that the use of statistical process control is an efficient tool to identify the behavior of the corn sowing process. Based on the results, speeds close to 4.5km/hallowed an efficient sowing process, as it presented a higher percentage of normal spaces in the distribution of maize seeds.(AU)

Key performance indicators (KPI) are essential to decision-making in an organization, but the approach to analysis and composition used in the formulation of the KPIs can lead to errors. Analysis based only on averages does not allow for discriminating between variations that are natural to the process or special cases which require investigation. The use of control charts can identify this differentiation. However, when several charts are presented encompassing different measurement units and scales, systemic interpretation can be impaired. To assist in this interpretation, this research study aimed at proposing a method to facilitate the analysis of control charts when multiple indicators are employed in the monitoring of agricultural operations. Based on the data obtained over 26 weeks from a mechanized sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) harvesting front, six indicators were defined and analyzed through individual control charts and, systemically, through a standardized group control chart. Results show that the points identified as being outside the control zone (special causes of variation) according to the standardized group control chart were the same as those identified by the six individual charts, which demonstrates the potential of this method to summarize the information with no loss of quality of analysis.

RESUMEN

Most energy used to operate agricultural machines in the field is generated from fossil fuel combustion. The combustion process emits atmospheric pollutants, increasing the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). In this context, this review is to discuss technologies for mitigating diesel engine GHG emissions to advance sustainable development in the agricultural machinery sector. This paper presents strategies and technologies widely adopted by agricultural machinery manufacturers in controlling pollutant emissions during fuel combustion. The findings of this study encompass sustainable alternative technologies, such as selective catalytic reduction, exhaust gas recirculation, diesel particulate filter, and fuels. This study helps reveal the environmental impact of agricultural field operations that generate GHG emissions.

This study evaluated the level of occupational noise emitted by automotive harvesters during coffee harvest. For the evaluations, three self-propelled harvesters were used: Case-IH® model Coffee Express 200, with cabin; Korvan® model 9200, without cabin; and Oxbo® model 9220, with cabin. Data were collected using a noise dosimeter model DOS-700. Noise levels were assessed for the operator and assistant of each harvester. Five repetitions were performed for the operator and assistant, with each repetition consisting of 2 h of evaluation. Results obtained were compared with the action level and exposure limit of the Regulatory Norms (NR) 15 and Occupational Hygiene Norms (NHO) 01. The action levels of the NHO 01 (82 dB) and NR 15 (80 dB) regulations were exceeded for the operator and assistant in the three evaluated harvesters. Regarding the exposure limit (85 dB), the level was exceeded for the operator of the Korvan® and Case-IH® harvesters in accordance with NHO 01. In the NR 15 regulation, the exposure limit was > 85 dB for the operator of the Korvan® harvester. For the assistant, all harvesters emitted noise levels > 85 dB based on both the NHO 01 and NR 15 regulations.

With the growing need to obtain information about power consumption in buildings, it is necessary to investigate how to collect, store, and visualize such information using low-cost solutions. Currently, the available building management solutions are expensive and challenging to support small and medium-sized buildings. Unfortunately, not all buildings are intelligent, making it difficult to obtain such data from energy measurement devices and appliances or access such information. The internet of things (IoT) opens new opportunities to support real-time monitoring and control to achieve future smart buildings. This work proposes an IoT platform for remote monitoring and control of smart buildings, which consists of four-layer architecture: power layer, data acquisition layer, communication network layer, and application layer. The proposed platform allows data collection for energy consumption, data storage, and visualization. Various sensor nodes and measurement devices are considered to collect information on energy use from different building spaces. The proposed solution has been designed, implemented, and tested on a university campus considering three scenarios: an office, a classroom, and a laboratory. This work provides a guideline for future implementation of intelligent buildings using low-cost open-source solutions to enable building automation, minimize power consumption costs, and guarantee end-user comfort.

RESUMEN

The large volume of effluents generated by intensive cattle production can become an environmental problem, requiring solutions that combine treatment and disposal of reuse water. The quality of cattle wastewater (CWW) treated by ozonation, the water requirement and its effect on the growth of seedlings of Dalbergia nigra cultivated with sewage sludge were determined under different light conditions. The study was carried out in a split plot scheme with 2 shading levels (0%-C1, and 49.4% attenuation-C2) and 3 types of irrigation water (control-T1, 1 h ozonation-T2, and 2 h-T3), with 4 repetitions. Direct sowing was realized into 280 cm3 tubes which were irrigated by drip irrigation with automatic management. The height and collar diameter were measured every 21 days, and at the end of the nursery phase, and the Dickson quality index (DQI) and irrigation water productivity (WPir) were determined. In addition, seedlings were transplanted in a forest restauration area (FRA) of Atlantic Forest, with height and diameter monitoring for 200 days. With ozonation, there was an increase in pH and a reduction in electrical conductivity, total solids and turbidity in the CWW, allowing its use for irrigation of forest seedlings. The maximum volumes of water applied were 2.096 and 1.921 L plant-1, with water supply T2 and T1, respectively, and coverages C1 and C2. In these conditions, the seedlings reached DQI of 0.47 and 0.17, and WPir of 2.35 and 1.48 g L-1, respectively. The initial vegetative growth of the seedlings planted in the FRA was benefited by the nutrients provided by the CWW treated. Therefore, the use of sewage sludge and CWW treated has the potential to produce forest seedlings, reducing the release of waste and effluents into the environment.
